However, it turns out that using pet names can do more than just make people cringe around you — couples who use affectionate names for each other seem more likely to have a strong relationship.

The latest research supporting this conclusion was carried out by Superdrug Online Doctor. In a survey of over 1,000 adults, researchers found that 87% of Americans use pet names in relationships (compared to 74% of Europeans), and those who do are 16% more likely to be happy in their relationship.

Additionally, men (85%) actually use pet names more often than women (76%).

Specifically, the study found that 90% of Americans who use nicknames like “beautiful,” “gorgeous,” and “sweetheart” for their partners were satisfied with their relationship, compared to just 56% of couples who don’t use pet names at all .

However, the study also revealed which names are despised the most: “Daddy” emerged as the worst, with 73% of people saying they hate it. Closely followed by “Daddy” (72%), “Süßbacken” (66%) and “Muffin” (61%).

Among Europeans, the pet name correlated with the happiest relationship was German “Schatz,” followed by “cutie” and “hun.” Meanwhile, in the US, “pretty” comes first, followed by “beautiful” and “gorgeous”.

The use of pet names was found to increase relationship satisfaction by 9% in Europe and 16% in the US.

The study’s conclusions aren’t entirely new, though — scientists have long linked the use of pet names to the childhood love we have for our parents.

“Couples who speak like this recall their own experiences as young children and their first love, their mother,” Dean Falk, a professor of neuroanthropology at Florida State University, told Broadly.

Another study, published in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships in 1993, analyzed 154 couples to examine the correlation between pet name idioms and relationship satisfaction.

The research found that satisfied husbands and wives used more idioms than dissatisfied ones.

But Zaddy became particularly prominent earlier this year, on Jan. 30, when rapper Blac Chyna used it in an Instagram caption following her arrest for public intoxication. The term appeared to allude to Rob Kardashian, who Blac Chyna was dating at the time, but a report on the post suggested zaddy was already a term familiar to the author:

Studies show that pet names typically signify a strong relationship between lovers. However, not all pet names are great, and some can be downright offensive. Let’s take a look at some of the most common (and less common) pet names, according to over 1,000 Europeans and Americans. We’ve compiled a definitive list of the most popular pet names for everything from typical relationship gossip to your most intimate moments in the bedroom. Affectionate Labels Before you get sentimental about the pet names in your relationship, research has a lot to say about why we use nicknames in the first place and what they might reveal about a couple’s emotional connection. It may feel strange to know that scientists link the use of pet names to our parents’ childhood love, but studies also suggest that these nicknames (like inside jokes) are strong clues that the relationship is strong enough to even have them. Almost 3 in 4 Europeans and 87 percent of Americans told us they use pet names in their relationships. More common among men than women, 85 percent of men and 76 percent of women found their own special something to call their boyfriend, girlfriend, and spouse. However, as we’ll explore below, not all pet names are created equal, and some can be particularly horrid.

How did you call me? People admitted which pet names they liked the least, and two similar nicknames topped the list: “Daddy” and “Daddy.” No matter how much you love your significant other, he might not want to hear a reference to your dad, especially when things get hot and heavy. Voted the worst pet name on our list, 73 percent of men and women agreed “Daddy” should be kept on the radio and out of the bedroom. Other commonly uncomfortable pet names included “sweet cheeks,” “muffin,” “sweet tart,” “sweet pea,” and “princess.” These overly affectionate nicknames were among the least popular pet names, according to more than half of the respondents. Looking for a safer bet? Stick to names like “sweetheart,” “beautiful,” and “sweetheart,” which tend to bother fewer people.

Sexy Pseudonyms Talking to your partner in the bedroom, whether it’s “dirty” or intimate, can be a fun, complimentary come-on for many. Oftentimes, the language used in sexual scenarios can include romantic and/or kinky pet names. More than 1 in 3 men used “baby” in bed, while almost as many women chose not to use pet names at all during sex. Pet names like “baby”, “baby” and “honey” were the most popular nicknames used in the bedroom by ladies and gentlemen. Studies have shown that men value intimate conversations not only because they can lead to sex, but also because these emotional connections can help make sex more meaningful. “Sweet cheeks,” “daddy,” or “sweet pea” are the last nicknames you’ll hear thrown around during sex, and were used less than 5% of the time by both Americans and Europeans.

Daddy Issues While a whopping 72 percent of all 1,026 respondents despised the name “daddy” as a term of endearment for general relationships, 12 percent of Americans reported using “daddy” in the bedroom with their partners. On the other hand, the vast majority of Europeans avoid the term in and out of the bedroom. Only 3 percent of people originating from the EU had ever chosen to use “daddy” in the bedroom. Even if “daddy” isn’t your thing in everyday romantic life, there’s a (small) chance it’s your thing in the bedroom, regardless of your nationality. There’s also a chance that the concept of erotic pet names in general isn’t for you. Fortunately, if you’re still interested in bringing dirty talk into your sex life, there are a wealth of phrases, words, and pointers to read through and try out with your partner. If you’re not quite sure where to start, there are many resources and suggestions available to give you a little inspiration.

The relationship experts at Language of Love usually have good things to say about the power of pet names. They’ve explained that they can signify strong emotional connections, but what exactly do these nicknames (or lack thereof) really say about how happy we are with our significant other? Among respondents, couples who used pet names were more likely to be satisfied in their relationship than those who didn’t. American couples who used pet names were 16 percent more likely to be satisfied in their relationships, while European pet names were 9 percent more likely to be relationship satisfied. In America, 90 percent or more of people who used the terms “pretty,” “beautiful,” and “gorgeous” were satisfied with their partner, while only 56 percent of those who did not use pet names were satisfied. In Europe, the most pleasant pet names were slightly different. 93 percent of Europeans who use “Schatz” to affectionately address their partner (an expression commonly used in Germany for “meine Liebe” or “darling”) felt satisfied with their relationship, followed by “sweetness” ( 90 percent), “pretty” (90 percent) and “beautiful” (89 percent). In contrast to Americans, 62 percent of Europeans who did not use pet names were still satisfied with their relationship.

Same name, different person Pet names are often considered satisfying among lovers because they act as a secret love language. That is, of course, unless you’ve also used your partner’s current nickname with an ex. 44 percent of men and 36 percent of women admitted to using pet names from one relationship to the next. These personal marks or expressions are meant to be intimate and private between couples, but that didn’t stop 2 out of 5 people from converting the same labels of affection from one person to another. Perhaps it’s best to consider new names for each lover to get the full range of emotional benefits from establishing pet names with your partner – after all, you’d probably hate getting them mixed up. Even if your pet name differs from our most popular list, it can be worth calling your partner a unique name, all your own.
