Boss begins the love poem with “My love for you is so embarrassing/great. . . Would you mind terribly, my Groundling, / if I compared it to the Hindenburg (I mean / before it burned)” (Title-3). He asks her permission to compare their love to something that has failed. He points out that the comparison took place before the crash, while he was still airborne. The Hindenburg is a massive aircraft that is, as the poem puts it, “a stuffed Titanic on an ocean / made of air.” (4-5) The Titanic is another massive and legendary means of transport. Here we see a pattern with large transport forms, which unfortunately also failed. He mentioned it was fabric. Cloth is an elegant building material, but not as strong as steel or other traditional building materials.
