Developing Soul Red Crystal was a demanding process and Mazda had to reinvent the way cars are painted. As with any beautiful object, part of the beauty is the way light dances across its surface. The interplay of light and form inspired Mazda to create a paint with exceptional depth and reflective quality.

To ensure such visual perfection, the color designer and paint master worked together during the development process to ensure the designer’s color choices were perfectly transferred to the cars. To achieve such a deep, glossy finish, the cars had to be hand painted. While this was possible for Mazda’s concept cars, a new technique was developed to achieve the same quality of Soul Red Crystal in production models. In a process called takuminuri, which translates to “craft coloring” in English, painting robots were effectively taught to duplicate the techniques of Mazda’s finest craftsmen.

Mazda tells a fascinating story of how its team in Japan figured out how to realize the Soul Red Crystal color vision of creative design expert Keiichi Okamoto, one of the people behind the original Soul Red and Machine Gray Metallic.

Although the report refers to how Mazda did it at the factory, aftermarket painters could still find out the science and creativity behind the development process for the new color, as well as some details about the production of its relatively new sister premium coating, Machine Grey appreciate.

Plus, the fact that Mazda has figured out how to make shiny-looking paint colors that they can mass-produce and sell as an option for just $300 (Machine Grey) and $595 (Soul Red Crystal) suggests it that mass-market OEM competitors might try to follow Mazda’s lead in the liveries of their own models. “I wanted to create the most beautiful red in the world,” Okamoto said in a statement. “A color that people would immediately perceive as beautiful and that would immediately grab their attention. He said he was looking for a color “like the translucent red of rubies or red glass.”

It fell to paint systems expert Takakazu Yamane – who Mazda says was “fundamental in achieving the three-coat wet paint system” and Mazda’s Aqua-Tech system – to figure out how to actually make any color that was in Okamoto’s brain.

“In order to realize the highly translucent red that Okamoto envisioned, I felt we first had to translate the ideal red into numerical values ​​based on ergonomics,” Yamane said in a statement. “It allowed us to measure how people perceive color and light and give us a goal for the team to work towards.”

Yamane obtained precision measurement equipment – originally intended to study the planet from satellites – and began making measurements on red objects “at the same place and from the same position and angle as Okamoto’s eyes, analyzed the relationship between the spectrum of light and what Okamoto was looking at and his reaction to it and converting the target red data into numerical values.”

Yamane’s team also found that the shade of blue most people see when looking at red is actually just an optical illusion — the gauges didn’t show any true blue pigment within the reds examined.

“Conversely, the team found that other colors, when mixed with red, are perceived by people as muddy,” Mazda wrote. “So the tests and analysis led the team to conclude that achieving their goal is not about taking the ideal image and mixing colors to achieve it. Rather, the key was to work to get as pure a red as possible.”

They handed their “ideal color” over to paint technique expert Koji Teramoto, who had to figure out how to spray the paint in just three coats using Mazda’s Aqua-Tech system.

As Mazda wrote:

Machine Gray has a black layer under the reflective layer on which high-brightness aluminum flakes are aligned. By allowing the deep black pigment underneath to shine through the gaps between the aluminum flakes, it creates a shiny metallic look that brings out the contrasts in the shadows. Likewise, a translucent red layer on top of the black and reflective layers would allow to create a vivid red that is deep and shiny. But that would require four coats, including the clear top coat, and would require two passes down the paint line.

Mazda says the team refused to add a fourth layer, which would have been less environmentally friendly.

“I told myself that we can’t compromise here, and sticking to that led to a new idea,” Teramoto said.

Instead, Teramoto and his team combined light-absorbing flakes with his high-brightness aluminum flakes — and knocked out both in a single coat. Mazda controls both sets of flakes to ensure they never touch when painted at the factory.

“The smallest particle that the human eye can perceive from about 30 cm away is about 25 microns,” he said in a statement. “We tried to make the flakes imperceptible by using 12 to 15 micron flakes.”

Mazda said all flakes are a consistent size.

Mazda says the color has 50 percent more depth and 20 percent more saturation than the original Soul Red.

Soul Red Crystal follows the Mazda 2016 version of Machine Gray first available with the next-gen CX-9 and seen below on the MX-5 “Miata” RF. The color makes a vehicle “look like it’s been carved from a single bar of steel,” according to Mazda.

Mazda wrote that “perfect, pristine panels are a necessity” with the paint (possibly also an aftermarket consideration) and described “ultra-precision stamping and assembly.”

Like Soul Red Crystal, Mazda figured out how to apply Machine Gray in a three-step process. (Mazda notes that this doesn’t include its “electrodeposited layer,” which is likely a reference to the E-Coat primer.)

The reflective layer contains wafer-thin, high-gloss aluminum flakes and must be applied very precisely to ensure an even coating. During the drying process, the thickness of this layer shrinks to about 2.5 microns, about a quarter the thickness of most reflective layers. This causes the aluminum flakes to lie flat with even spacing between each flake, as if the layer had been hand painted by a skilled craftsman. This high-density finish imparts a sheen to the entire surface when illuminated for a realistic metallic look. Jet black pigment is used in both the reflective and colored layers and is visible through the spaces between the aluminum flakes, giving unlit areas a black tint and increasing the contrast between light and shadow.

The Aqua-tech paint system reduces volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions by 78 percent compared to Mazda’s previous oil-based paint systems without increasing energy consumption (and associated CO2 emissions), which is already one of the lowest of any paint system in the Mazda Market was world. Mazda achieved world-class low CO2 emissions with the implementation of the three-coat wet paint system. The next goal was to further reduce emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) to world-class levels, thereby developing the most environmentally friendly paint system in the world. Water-based paints typically produce far lower VOC emissions than solvent-based paints due to their low VOC content. However, they contain water as a diluent, and this water must be evaporated through a drying process that consumes large amounts of energy. CO2 emissions associated with the production of this energy means that waterborne paint systems tend to generate higher CO2 emissions than solventborne paint systems. Therefore, the key question for the development team was how to continue using water-based paints, which greatly reduce VOC emissions while mitigating the CO2 emissions generated by generating the required energy. To counteract this problem, Mazda has developed technologies that are divided into two main groups.

New Technology 1 Consolidation of the painting process by developing a highly functional new paint finish

Two new types of topcoats have been developed for the Aqua-tech Paint System: a waterborne color basecoat and the first urethane clearcoat to be fully implemented by a company in Japan. By switching to these paints, VOC emissions are among the lowest in the world – 57 percent lower than the three-coat wet paint system and 50 percent lower than traditional water-based paint systems. In addition, these highly functional topcoats have additional properties normally provided by the basecoat, allowing Mazda to consolidate painting processes. This significantly reduces energy consumption and solves the problem of high CO2 emissions. The highly functional quality of the paint also ensures that paint safety and durability remain high, while other properties such as smoothness, gloss and resistance to chipping are even better.

Energy Saving Paint Booth Air Conditioning By changing our approach to paint booth air conditioning, we achieved a 34 percent reduction in CO2 emissions volume compared to traditional water-based paint booths. In order for the paint to stabilize on the surface of the car body, the water content must be strictly controlled from the moment the paint is applied, and it is important that it has reached the ideal viscosity before applying the next layer. Therefore, it is important to maintain a constant drying rate. For this reason, in normal paint booths for water-based paint systems, it is necessary to keep the temperature and humidity level constant using an air conditioning system. Since the paint booth is a large space large enough to hold an entire vehicle body, it requires a large air conditioner and a lot of energy – especially in summer and winter. Mazda’s newly developed system constantly controls the maximum water vapor absorption volume by monitoring the external conditions and making the minimum necessary adjustments to the temperature and humidity in the spray booth. The result is a significant reduction in energy consumption during the painting process.

Energy-saving flash-off process With water-based paint systems, a pre-heating (flash-off) drying process is used between the base coat and the clear top coat. By evaporating the water contained in the base coat before applying the clear coat, the process aims to improve the quality of the finished paint. Usually, the temperature is increased to 80°C until the paint is sufficiently dry. However, before the clear coat can be applied, the temperature must be reduced to 40°C again. If the body is too hot, the clear coat will dry before it can spread and the final smoothness will be compromised. Conventional heating systems blow hot air into the spray booth. However, this process heats both the steel vehicle body and the paint. The subsequent cooling of the steel also consumes a lot of energy. To solve this problem, the Aqua-tech Paint System flash-off process uses an infrared heater. This only heats the paint surface, which allows the water solvent to be evaporated without heating the steel body. The heating can also be switched on and off quickly. In this way, the heating output can be easily optimized for every body size and paint color. The technology allows the water to be efficiently removed with as little electricity as possible. This new system results in a 17 percent reduction in CO2 emissions compared to traditional flash-off processes.

Three-layer wet paint system

The three coat wet paint system applies all three coats of paint, primer, base coat and clear coat while still wet and then uses only one drying process to finish. By applying this new technology, CO2 emissions have been reduced by more than 15 percent and emissions of volatile organic compounds (VOC) by up to 45 percent compared to conventional painting processes.

1) CO2 emissions have been significantly reduced with this newly developed coating system. It combines the primer coating process with that of the base and clear top coats. All three layers are applied one after the other and then finely baked. 2) By combining extremely accurate paint control technology with a highly efficient robotic coating system, Mazda has achieved uniform coating thickness and increased the efficiency of its paint shop. In addition, Mazda, in collaboration with a paint manufacturer, has developed new low-solvent paints that allow the three layers to be applied one after the other. These advances reduce volatile organic compound (VOC) emissions and overall costs while improving end quality.

(1) Low Solvent in Paint Simply reducing the amount of solvent in the paint increases the paint’s viscosity and makes it unsuitable for coating. To prevent this, Mazda reduced the molecular weight of the paint resin and thus the paint viscosity. By developing this low-solvent paint, Mazda has significantly reduced VOC emissions.

(2) Prevention of mixing of primer and base coat When primer and base coat are mixed, gloss and color deteriorate. To prevent this, we developed a new resin called an interfacial control polymer and added it to the primer paint. When the primer is applied, the interfacial control polymer forms a barrier layer on the paint surface. The larger interfacial control resin molecules, evenly distributed throughout the primer upon application, are soon drawn by surface tension to the surface of the thin coat of paint, where they form a highly viscous barrier layer at the interface between the primer and basecoat. This technology prevents color degradation and ensures the final quality is as good or better than traditional coating methods.

(3) Improving coating efficiency In order to avoid unnecessary application of paint to areas that do not need to be coated and to obtain uniform coating thickness with a minimum of paint and energy, the three-coat wet paint system uses robotics instead of the traditional reciprocal automated one painting process. The advantages of robotic painting are that the paint can be sprayed from the ideal angle for any surface, it offers excellent repeatability, and it can accurately maintain a specified distance between the nozzle and the target surface, even when the surface is curved.

How to find the color of your car

When trying to figure out the exact color of your car, the paint code is what matters. This specific code, which can be a combination of numbers and/or letters, correlates to a specific color formula and name that perfectly suits your vehicle.

Luckily, finding your car’s color code is not the most difficult task in the world and there are several ways to find your vehicle color code. Such methods include looking for the elusive number in the driver’s door frame, under the hood, in the glove box, or in the spare tire well. There are various points where your car’s color code might be listed, but the image below shows the most common places.

There are also a few guides online that will tell you where your paint code is located. This guide from Car Color Services or your vehicle manual may be able to help.

Finding your car’s exact color code can be trickier with classic cars, but it’s not impossible. The number of places where the code can be found is larger and varies depending on the year of manufacture. On older cars, the code is somewhere in the engine compartment.

You may need to determine the color of your vehicle for a number of reasons, but in the end it is important that you find a color that is a perfect match.

To find an exact color match you will need your car’s color code. Every vehicle has a paint code, a color number that universally identifies a car paint color. And just as every vehicle has a paint code, every vehicle also has a chassis number.

In this article, we will teach you everything you need to know about your car’s VIN number and how you can use it to determine the color of your car’s paintwork.

What is my car’s VIN number?

VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number. Your car’s VIN is the identification code for your vehicle. It acts as a fingerprint as no two VINs are the same. Each VIN consists of 17 characters, both numbers and capital letters, which serve as an identifier for a specific vehicle.

The VIN contains unique information about the vehicle. From your car’s VIN, you can find out the manufacturer, specifications, and the information you need to get the color code. You can also use the number to look up callbacks, track registrations and warranties, and determine insurance coverage. And if someone steals your car, the VIN number can prove with certainty that a found vehicle belongs to you.

Your car’s VIN provides a lot of information about your car and can even help you determine the paint color of your car. We’ll get to that shortly. First we need to find the VIN number.

Where can I find the VIN of my car?

As we showed you above, the VIN of your car is crucial. It serves as an identification factor for your vehicle in the event your car is stolen and provides important information related to the maintenance and upkeep of your car. So of course you have to know where to find it.

The chassis number can be found in three places:

On your insurance card/policy On the registration document and registration On the dashboard on the driver’s side of the vehicle

Usually the quickest way to find the number is to go to your car and find the VIN on the dashboard. Just look where the dashboard meets the window pane. For most vehicles you will find the chassis number there.

What do the numbers and letters in a chassis number mean?

So you’ve found the VIN number. As we have already said, the VIN is simply a string of 17 letters and numbers. You could say it behaves like a social security number. While the VIN identifies a specific vehicle — much like a social security number would identify an individual person — it also tells you more.

Each number or letter in a VIN identifies specific information about your vehicle. We will list the meaning of each character below.

1st character: Where the vehicle was built

Character: Where the vehicle was built 2nd and 3rd character: The manufacturer

and 3 characters: The manufacturer 4th to 8th characters: Make, engine size and vehicle type

up to 8 characters: make, engine size and vehicle type 9th character: security code or check digit to identify invalid chassis numbers

Character: Vehicle model year 11th character: Plant where the vehicle was assembled

The VIN is long and contains almost everything there is to know about your vehicle at the time it was manufactured. Deciphering your VIN is not difficult; You just have to know what you see.

How to use a VIN to find my car’s paint code

You’ll notice that we didn’t list a color in any of the character descriptions above. That’s because your VIN doesn’t explicitly state your car’s color code, which is the number used to match the color to a car’s exact shade.

However, you can still determine the color of your car paint using your VIN number. Since your VIN acts as your car’s fingerprint, you can use it to look up your car’s color code via other platforms. You can call your dealer, give them your VIN number and ask for the color code. Another option is to look up color codes online using your VIN.

Although your VIN doesn’t give you the exact paint code or color of your car, it’s a tool to help you find it.

Where else can I find my car’s paint code?

Your car’s VIN gives you a lot of information about your vehicle, but it doesn’t give you your color code. So where can you go to find car paint?

Most vehicles have color codes listed on the inside of the driver’s door jamb. Usually there you will find a sticker with information about the vehicle, including the paint color. There are two paint codes listed on these plates: an interior paint code and an exterior paint code, sometimes referred to as “trim” and “paint” respectively.

In some cases, the color codes prove more difficult to find. If you don’t see color code information in the door jamb, check your owner’s manual. It usually tells you where the color code posters are and takes the guesswork out of finding them.

Should I use the VIN to determine my car paint color?

With a little work you can find your car’s color codes using your VIN, although we think it’s quicker and easier to simply find the color code stickers on your car. If you can’t read the paint code or the sticker is just gone, using your car’s VIN to determine the paint color is a great alternative.

The color requires 2 types, also I used the clear coat. The application required many coats, around 6, for my application. I painted over the front plastic bumper area to cover some scratches. The color match was good, much better than any over the counter automotive paint. Application was a little tricky as the amount of base coat, second coat and clear coat is a guessing game. The color was good but the finish does not have the luster of the original paint. The finish was also a bit rough compared to other paints. I still have to coat it with a layer of wax. I hope this increases the shine. I rate it 8 out of 10.

Our new Mazda CX5, Soul Red Crystal Metallic somehow got a 3/4 scuff on the edge of the passenger door. The scratched area was white so it really stood out. Soul Red touch up paint is available in three bottles. We applied two coats of the red base coat, two of the red second coat and two of the clear coat. The paint was easy to apply with the small brush. It’s a close but not perfect match, but the repair is virtually invisible unless you know where to look and look closely in good light. Mazda paint codes – location

As with most auto manufacturers, Mazda paint codes can be found in multiple places. The most common way to find Mazda paint codes is on your chassis plate under the hood in the rear of the engine compartment. They can also be located in the door latch on the chassis panel.

Since around 2004, later models do not always have a color code on the vehicle. The only option is to go to a local Mazda dealer to get your color code. He will need your registration/chassis number, so have it ready. The color code in the image below is 22V SUNLIGHT SILVER.

We recommend always confirming the color code on the vehicle prior to ordering whenever possible. This is by far the most reliable way to ensure the correct color is ordered.

If you cannot find your color code on the vehicle, the next best alternative is to go to a local Mazda dealer parts/service department with your registration/VIN number. You can confirm your color from the relevant manufacturers database. (Unfortunately only dealers have access to this system)
