How to identify the location of the trunk release button

Even if we think we have mastered the art of understanding and driving our car, sometimes even basic functions like opening the trunk can be difficult. Different cars do this in different ways, and when we have multiple cars in the family it can sometimes take minutes to remember how to open the trunk at the last minute. This can also become tricky if you are driving a friend’s car or have rented a self-drive while on vacation. Imagine driving to a mall parking lot and looking completely lost when security guards ask you to unlock the trunk!

This problem is similar to the problem of the position of the lever to open the fuel tank cap. But don’t worry, we have come up with simple steps to solve this little problem easily. Here are all the ways to find the trunk release button or lever in your car.

The traditional way to open the trunk

The good old location of the trunk release lever was on the floor of the car, just in front of the driver’s seat, on the right. Two levers are usually installed here, one to open the gas cap and the second to open the trunk lid. Gently pull this lever to release the trunk lock.

The trunk of modern cars can also be opened by simply unlocking your car’s central locking system. This will unlock all doors including the trunk lid. By simply pulling the lever outside the trunk, you can raise it.

When in the car, unlock the car from the driver’s side to unlock all other doors. If you are outside the car to access the trunk, simply unlock the car with the keyless entry fob.

Hands-Free Access

Some high-end cars and top-end versions of smaller cars have true keyless entry and start-stop functionality. So you can keep the key fob in your pocket when boarding. The system works via a proximity sensor placed in the car. Once inside the sensor’s area, simply press the black button on the door handles (including the trunk) to unlock the car and gain access.

The American Automobile Association reports that it receives calls from more than 4,000,000 locked-out drivers each year. That’s an increase from 500,000 or less a few years ago. According to the AAA, this is due to keyless ignition and increasingly sophisticated electronic anti-theft devices.

With the hectic Christmas shopping season, you’re even more likely to lock yourself out. Here’s what you can do to stay calm and get help along the way.

Dial 911

Safety comes first; So don’t hesitate to call 911 if you think you’re in danger. In many cases, the police can unlock the car door. If this is not possible, they will probably call a tow truck, which of course will be on your bill. But at least you’re safe.

Call roadside assistance

This is where the annual auto club fees really pay off. AAA, Allstate, and other organizations that provide roadside assistance can get you in quickly, although it may take a while for them to get to you. If you don’t subscribe to such a service, you may still be in luck. Most new cars come with roadside assistance during the basic warranty period. Your owner’s manual should have the details, but of course that’s included with the keys in the car. The number to call could be on a window sticker. Some of the most important things to check under the hood include the engine coolant reservoir, engine oil level, brake fluid reservoir and washer fluid level.

Engine Coolant Level/Reservoir

Point to the coolant reservoir and tell your inspector that you would check that the level is between the maximum and minimum marks on the tank, or if there is only one mark then to that mark.

Top tip: Mention that you would always make sure the engine is cool first when doing an inspection to avoid burns. Then carefully unscrew the tank cap to allow the pressure to escape slowly.

Engine oil level

View the dipstick and oil cap. To check the levels, pull out the dipstick and dry it, then reinsert it briefly and pull it out to check where the oil mark is between the minimum and maximum marks.

Top tip: Explain that the engine oil level must be checked monthly and topped up via the filler cap. Be sure to mention that you parked the car on a level surface to get an accurate reading.

Point to the brake fluid reservoir and tell your inspector that you would check to see if the level is between the minimum and maximum levels. When it comes to the brake fluid reservoir, it is essential to pay attention to hygiene so that no dirt penetrates and impairs braking performance.

Top tip: Brake fluid is toxic, so when filling you need to be careful not to come in contact with your skin or your car’s paintwork.

The windshield reservoir has no outside minimum and maximum markings, so you will need to remove the cap and visually inspect the level.

Top tip: This should be checked regularly, especially before embarking on a long journey.

Your tires should be free of cuts or dents and it is recommended that they each have a minimum tread depth of between 3 and 6mm. Tell your inspector that recommended tire pressures can be found in your manufacturer’s instructions and that a certified pressure gauge should always be used. Problems unlocking the vehicle are common among owners of older vehicles that are still mainly opened with the key. Some causes can be fixed with quick maintenance, but others require you to replace some parts. In this guide, we discuss all the reasons why the car door won’t open and the easiest and cheapest ways to fix them.

The most common reasons for stuck car doors are lack of lubrication, freezing, worn or dirty lock cylinders and tumblers, or a broken end piece (pivot) of the lock.

Reasons why the door will not unlock

1. Inadequate lubrication

It’s important to remember that the door lock is a delicate mechanism with several moving parts that are also exposed to the elements. Locks don’t require much lubrication, if any, but over time dirt and microscopic rust can clog the mechanism.

is a great way to expel moisture and clean the lock, but I would recommend that you use it as well.

The best way to apply the oil is to hold your wrench flat and pour it into the wrench’s groove. Insert it into the lock, pull it out and rotate it 180 degrees, then repeat. Use the key to distribute the oil, adding a little more oil if you feel the opposite side of the lock hasn’t received enough lubrication. You should not overdo it with the oil, as the excess will collect dirt and quickly foul the lock.

2. Frozen Castle

The one aspect missing from almost every driving school in the world is teaching students about proper car maintenance and care. When the cold weather hits, these aren’t the only pieces of gear you need. The cold can cause the lock to seize and prevent you from opening the door, but there are a few ways to thaw it out.

are a popular solution to the problem, but if you don’t have one handy, one level will do.

Heat the key with the lighter, then quickly insert it into the lock. Repeat the process a few times until the lock opens. Keep the flame toward the tip of the key to avoid melting the plastic or transferring much of the heat to the base. There’s no need to get the key red hot either, if it’s too hot to touch it’s more than capable of heating up the lock.

The best way to keep the lock from freezing is to use . As with the lubricating oil, you would put some on the key and spread it through the lock. Interestingly, 100% glycerin freezes at 56°F and becomes more resilient when mixed with water. For best results, mix two-thirds glycerin with one-third distilled water, but use kitchen scales and measure in grams since glycerin is denser than water.

Door rubber seals can harden from cold and even freeze together. When you open the door, you can pull one of the seals off or tear them. A really simple solution is to dab glycerine on a cloth and wipe the seals with it. It’s a trick I’ve been using for years and I haven’t had any problems since.

3. Broken lock end

I’m not a locksmith so I’m a bit overwhelmed with detailed knowledge of the inner workings of a car door lock. However, I know that worn lock tumblers either prevent the lock from turning or allow you to unlock the door with almost anything, including a screwdriver. If the lock turns but does not unlock the door, the most likely cause is the broken retaining bracket.

When you turn the key, you mechanically move a lever located on the back of the lock. Through a series of push-pull connections, the lock opens the latch between the door and the B-pillar. If one of the components fails on the way to the door lock, you may find that the key turns more easily than it used to, and of course the door will not unlock.

Fixing the tailpiece is really a job for a locksmith as it involves removing the door panel. This is one of the most complicated jobs to do, especially when the window controls and speakers are door mounted. I’ve probably experienced a dozen door-related failures, be it the handle, the lock, or the tailpiece, and I’ve left most to a specialist.

4. Defective lock cylinder and tumblers

In the event of a faulty lock cylinder or tumbler, the key will not turn at all as the failure will prevent all of the tumblers from lining up. There are three challenges you must overcome to get the lock repaired:

Gain access to the vehicle. Remove the broken lock. Remake and reinstall the lock.

Considering you have the key, the first step shouldn’t be difficult – you can use the key fob to unlock the doors, open the passenger side lock or get into the vehicle through the trunk. Once in the driver’s seat, you can manually open the door and, more importantly, drive the car to a local locksmith. You don’t need to change the keys as you can use your existing key as a template to create the new lock. Alternatively, you can remove the lock yourself by following the steps outlined in this article. It’s not an easy task and you still have to have a new lock designed or get a new one and replace the keys.

5. Worn key

As you slide the key in and out of the lock for years or decades, it will eventually wear out and become unusable. The wear prevents the tumblers from lining up and the lock from turning. It can also bend and even snap in the lock, which is the worst case scenario.

Some locksmiths can cut copies from a worn key, but rest assured it will cost more than duplicating a key that is in good condition. If your key isn’t being carried at the moment, that’s great as you can take it to a locksmith and have it duplicated.
