Many ceramic glass coating products are available on the market. But a common problem with all of them is their longevity, effectiveness and claims that one size fits all.

So let’s try to learn more about how to apply glass ceramic coatings. We explain the science behind a nano protective coating and why applying DIY ceramic coatings to windshields isn’t as crazy as advertised.

How ceramic coatings work

If you’ve ever used a nanoceramic coating on your car’s surface to protect the vehicle’s paintwork from UV rays, then you know how effective it is due to its hydrophobic properties, which allow it to repel water and other contaminants, and its Durability while protecting your surface. Many DIY ceramic coatings are made with natural and synthetic ingredients such as silicon dioxide (SiO2) or nano quartz (SiO4) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) to create paint protection. In fact, in most cases when you apply a DIY coating to windshields, the wiper blades will bounce across the glass surface (or what we refer to as “windshield chatter”) rather than gently gliding across and removing water.

However, should you decide to apply a nano-coating to glass, it can provide several benefits that outweigh wax and other water-reflective glass coatings.

In bad weather such as fog, overcast, or a rainstorm, it becomes difficult to see through the front, rear, and side windows. This is especially the case when it rains, as the water will completely block your view until the wipers activate.

Since the ceramic coating is hydrophobic, this is one instance where it is particularly helpful. Because the ceramic coating is hydrophobic, it provides a flat, smooth surface that is water resistant. This means that when it’s raining outside, water doesn’t stick as easily to the glass itself, giving you a lot better visibility outside of your vehicle, making you much safer as better visibility helps you avoid potential accidents.

Easier cleaning

Prep Works – Before you jump right in and apply the product, it is necessary to prep the surface. Start by inspecting the glass first. If you find any major damage, especially to the windscreen, it might be better to have it replaced first. If the glass has a crack somewhere, the ceramic coating will not prevent it from expanding.

After inspection, you should wash all glass, smooth with a clay stick, and wipe with a diluted isopropyl alcohol spray solution and a clean microfiber cloth.

Coating Application – After the glass is prepared, it’s time to apply the coating itself. Make sure you do this in a place out of direct sunlight as sunlight can interfere with the curing process and thus affect the durability of the coating once it is applied.

Curing and Post-Treatment – After applying the coating to the entire glass, it is recommended to move the vehicle under sunlight to speed up the curing process. At this time, make sure that the glass does not come into contact with water for at least 48 hours.

To maximize your results, you should finish after the 48 hours are up with a post-treatment, which consists of wiping down the jar with car soap and water using the two-bucket approach. Do not use glass cleaners as the chemicals in the cleaners can slowly break down the ceramic coating, reducing its benefits.

Glass surfaces must be dry and free of grease before coating. Wettability measurements can be used to check whether the cleaning is thorough and even, since a homogeneous glass surface has the same water contact angle everywhere. The surface free energy of the glass surface and coating should be such that interactions between the phases ensure good wetting and adhesion. For this purpose, the glass can be precisely characterized with a contact angle measuring device and the coating with a tensiometer. Good wetting can be expected when the surface tension of the coating is less than the surface free energy of the glass. The ratio of polar and non-polar (dispersive) interaction components of the surface tension of the two phases is decisive for the adhesion of the coating. The more similar the proportional polarities are, the better the coating adheres. Evaluation of the coating

The achieved uniformity, long-term stability and coating effect can be checked after coating using non-destructive contact angle measurement. Hard-coated or pyrolytically coated reflective lenses are those where the coating is applied when the lens is manufactured, i. H. it is an online coating process. In this coating process, the glass is melted into the glass at 650-700 degrees Celsius and as it cools, the coating becomes part of the glass.

The main advantage of hard coated glass is durability, it can also be handled like regular/annealed glass, it can be easily heat strengthened, toughened, laminated or bent. These glasses could also be used in single glazing without fear of losing the coating. Soft coated lenses (discussed in the next post) are prone to scratches and wear over time and require special handling. Hard coated lenses were invented to counteract this very problem. The only downside is the variety of colors available compared to offline coating.

Hard coated glasses could be produced either by Atmospheric Pressure Vapor Deposition (APCVD) or by spray technology. In the APCVD process, the coating additives are vaporized and loaded into a gas stream, the resulting gas supply is directed at the glass at over 600 degrees Celsius. This results in the formation of a ceramic coating that becomes part of the glass when the glass is in a semi-molten state. The APCVD process could be easily tuned to give a high deposition rate and the desired constant result.

Spray hard coated glass is made by spraying a liquid composition of coating additives onto the semi-molten glass. This method could not produce a consistent desired result like APCVD because the method is not easily controllable or tunable, the deposition rate would also differ from APCVD.
