As an archer, it’s important to know everything about your bow, even the smallest standards like the AMO length and what it means.
So what is the AMO length?
The AMO length is a standard measure of bow length, said to be three inches longer than the bowstring. It usually applies to recurve bows and other “conventional bows”. Example: If your bow has an AMO length of 60 inches, the length of your bowstring and the actual length of your bow when strung is 57 inches.
I’m an avid archer and as I learned more about my compound bow and other bows related to AMO length I started hearing all these terms that I didn’t quite understand.
I wanted to break it down for you…because once you know what these terms mean, it will make life so much easier.
Let’s start at the very beginning!
What is AMO?
AMO stands for Archery Manufacturers Organization. It was created on the edge to be a set of standards for bows, just like bow length.
Bow designers can be found all over the world, so there had to be a set of standards and rules that designers followed to make buying bows easier for consumers.
Manufacturers now have AMO measurements on your bow’s box or case to give you the standards that would fit your bow.
After a while, the Archery Manufacturers Organization became much more than just a set of standards. It became a community. They have since changed their name to the Archery Trade Association.
The Archery Trade Association still maintains its high standards for bow and bow designers, but it offers all archers a community to go to. From teaching to lobbying for archers.
They want to keep and grow this amazing sport around the world. Check out their website for more amazing information.
Now that you know a bit of the history and hopefully the meaning of what AMO stands for; Let’s dive into AMO length and what it means exactly.
AMO length
The AMO length is somewhere on the container that your bow came in or on your bow. It will contain the bow length designation and bow weight category.

Let’s stay with the example AMO 60″, 40 lbs.
When you see the AMO 60″ (that’s the AMO length) you want to subtract 3.
60 – 3 = 57 (you subtract 3 for recurve bows… compound bows are a bit more complicated)
69″ is the bow length from cam to cam when the bow is strung.
But listen… I hear people all the time saying they can do this simple math and they know what their arc length is.
But that is not true!
This is the string length.
Why do they call it arc length… I have no idea. But I want to be very clear about that.
AMO LENGTH DOES NOT MEAN “ARC LENGTH”.
There I said it… it’s all to do with string length. I’ve spoken to many bow string designers and had in-depth conversations and that’s all it is. It will help you find out your string length.
In other words, if you need to replace your bowstring, use that to maintain string length. It’s that simple. No problem!
Whenever you speak to an archer, he will always tell you his bow length in inches. That’s because the AMO has always used this metric to indicate AMO length.
So now you know what AMO stands for and how you can use it to replace your string in the future.
But what if you want to manually measure your bowstring to be sure? Good question!
Measure your bowstring manually
Perhaps you bought your bow used and the AMO or label is missing from the bow and now you need to find out the bowstring length yourself.
Don’t worry! It’s really easy.
Measuring the string length for recurve bows
To determine the correct string length for a recurve bow, all you need is a tape measure. I’m going to use a recurve bow in this example.
You take the tape measure and measure along the curve of the bow legs from string groove to string groove. This will be your string length.
Another option is to measure your bow from tip to tip to find the AMO length, then subtract according to the type of bow you are using.
When measuring, be sure to measure across the flat of the bow legs and not curve into the grip.
Now when it comes to measuring a compound bow, this part gets a little trickier.
You will need a marker to mark the bow and a bow press to hold the bow.
AMO length standards suggest that a composite string length must be determined by applying 100lbs. of tension and then you have to measure with your string from the outside of the pin to the outside of the other pin.
Most manufacturers have a string tensioner, some sort of machine, that makes this process much easier.
But since we’re making it ourselves, you’ll want to put the bow in a bow press and take a piece of string and make a loop. Place it on the spigot that is on the nock and then wrap it around the nocks. Then bring the string to the other pin on the other side of the bow.
Go ahead and hold the cams so that they look similar when the bow is drawn. You can adjust the brace height to ensure a good feel and see how the bow will look when fully strung.
Then take the marker and mark the string on the pin on the opposite side of the loop. And then you can measure the length of the cord from the loop to the mark. This is the correct length needed for your compound bow.
This process becomes much easier if you have an extra pair of hands.
Personally, I would go to a professional bowstringer or your local pro archery shop to help with a compound bow just to make sure it’s accurate.

I think a lot of newer archers (like how I started) get very intimidated when they see all these measurements and weird references they’ve never heard of, like: B.AMO.
And I’ve gone to several professional archery shops and pros to learn more about my bow and I’ve never heard of AMO, only a few times.
But it’s good to be knowledgeable and to know every aspect of your bow, even the string length. You can take your bow to a professional and they can do it for you and there will be no problem.
But knowing what AMO means and how to find your string length can go a long way in making you more aware of your bow and improving your skills.
I would also recommend taking a look at the Archery Trade Association. Knowing more about this union and history will help you understand what they do for all archers.
