Gaps can often form if the floor covering is laid in periods of higher humidity. Months later, usually during the heating season, these gaps show up. The good news is that they usually close again. Often a seasonal gap that you can put a penny in will close again when the humidity is higher.

Indoor humidity imbalances can also cause gaps. The ideal humidity is 30 to 50 percent and the ideal temperature range is 60 to 80 degrees. Should you fill in gaps in the ground?

It is important to remember that all wood expands and contracts with seasonal changes in humidity. If gaps bother you during the dry winter months, but don’t seem to notice them much in the relatively wet seasons, it’s probably best to leave the gaps alone, as filling the gaps when they’re at their widest will increase problems, the wood expands again and the gaps close naturally. In extreme cases, planks can buckle if you have not given them room to expand.

On the other hand, old floors can develop more or less permanent joints, but these can expand and narrow somewhat with changes in humidity.
