To perm your own hair at home, wash your hair first and pat dry so it doesn’t get soaking wet. Skip the conditioner as it prevents the perm solution from setting properly. Wrap a towel around your neck and don a plastic cape and plastic gloves to avoid getting the perm solution on your skin. Now divide your hair into 3 sections and tie the side sections into knots. Pull a thin section of hair straight from the mid section at the front of your hairline. Then, fold end paper over the section and slide it up over the ends of your hair. Hold a perm roller over the end paper and roll it down the length of your hair until you reach your scalp. Close the bar to secure it. Now do the same with another thin section of hair behind the first strand. Repeat the process until you’ve worked your way through the middle section of your hair to the nape of your neck. Next, undo one of the side buns. Part your hair with a vertical section just behind your ear and then tie the section in front of your ear into a bun. Pull a thin strand of hair taut at the top of the back part, place end paper and roll it up with a rod, just like you did your hair in the center part. Then repeat with another thin section of hair just below that bar. Continue rolling your hair into ponytails until you get to the end of this section. Then, unclip the bun in front of your ear and repeat the process with that section of hair. Do the same on the other side of your head so all your hair is wrapped up. Now tuck a thick cotton strip under the boning along your hairline to protect your skin from the perm solution. Apply the perm solution to your hair in a circular motion along each stick until you have used up the entire bottle. Leave the solution on for 5 minutes, then detangle one of the wands and check if your hair has a tight S-curl. If it doesn’t, roll the bar again and wait another 2 minutes before checking again. Check every 2 minutes until your hair has a tight S-shaped curl. Then, without removing the chopsticks, rinse your hair for 3 minutes. Let your hair dry while the chopsticks are still in. Now apply a perm neutralizer to your hair just like you did the perm solution and leave it on for 10 minutes. Rinse out the neutralizer for 3 minutes and let your hair air dry again.
