During an engine cylinder’s actual four phases of combustion: intake, compression, combustion, and exhaust (AKA suck, squeeze, pop, blow), proper ignition occurs near the top of the piston’s travel. At this point, an air and fuel mixture explosion provides most of the downward force.
But if you trick an engine by over-fueling during deceleration with the aforementioned accelerator pedal blip (AKA lift-off throttle overrun or exhaust overrun), or intentionally timing an engine’s firing order so that it’s not at TDC, but something after TDC occurs when your exhaust valves open, a rich fuel mixture burns and exits through the exhaust phase and into your tailpipe. The combustion comes out as heat and noise and creates these cracks, pops and pops.

How are crackling melodies made?
Crackle tunes on modern cars are created by reprogramming your car’s OEM ignition maps so that ignition events occur during the delay after the normal time. This is done with an aftermarket ECU tuner like Ktuner or Hondata.
First, a tuner adjusts the factory ignition timing maps and drastically retards the ignition in the lower rpm range (between 0 and 2000 rpm) only during the delay. But without extra fuel, there’s no loud popping or popping…yet.
You can add extra fuel manually by squeezing the throttle while decelerating. By using different ignition delay values, you can achieve different types of pops and pops.
You can also adjust what is known as the fuel cut delay, or how long the delay lasts before the fuel injectors shut off during the delay. Normal fuel injectors shut off at about 40 milliseconds with no throttle. A sizzling tune pumps those numbers up to around 1000ms, 1500ms, or 2000ms (1, 1.5, and 2 seconds, respectively).
Combined with retarded ignition timing, you get smoother and more consistent pops, pops and exhaust crackles. They use more fuel and lower MPG.

Legality of crackle tunes
As sizzling tunes mess with air and fuel, you’ll accidentally mess with your car’s exhaust systems. Since most crackle tunes are made on street legal cars and not race cars, crackle tunes are in direct violation of the EPA’s Clean Air Act.
The EPA does not actively take action against individual violations of the EPA Clean Air Act, but it does take action against shops that perform any type of ECU tuning that affects emissions. WHAT IS POP & BANG?

When you take your foot off the gas, your exhaust begins to pop, crackle and gurgle, adding loads of fun and character to sections of driving that used to be listless.
Similarly, if you have a pops and bangs tuning file installed, you will no longer experience a drop in tone when shifting up gears. You can mark each shift with a loud pop & bang.
And of course, what would tuning be without a performance benefit. In addition to the sonic benefit, pops and bangs also reduce or completely eliminate post-deceleration turbo lag.

BANG AND BANG – HOW DO YOU BRING YOUR CAR FLAMES OUT?
Two things are necessary to create pops and bangs. First we need to change the software in your ECU so that it doesn’t shut off the fuel immediately after you take your foot off the accelerator. That means some fuel is injected even if you’re not depressing the pedal.
Second, we retard the ignition timing during the retard. The change causes the flame front to spread later than normal. This means that part of the combustion takes place when the exhaust valves open and the cylinder is no longer the only place where the flame front propagates.
Many of you know how important timing is for both security and performance. If the ignition timing was retarded all the time, it would severely affect performance. For this reason, the delay is programmed to only occur when you take your foot off the accelerator. This way the pop & bang is there, but in no way reduces the performance of your car. On turbocharged cars, it even improves them.
This improvement comes from the fact that the fuel is not shut off during deceleration and the flame front propagates later. The result is a flow through the exhaust even when decelerating. This flow keeps the turbo spinning, so the next time you press the pedal you don’t experience that all too familiar and hated turbo lag because the exhaust side of the turbo never stops spinning. This allows the supercharger side to deliver instant boost as soon as the pedal is pressed again and the throttle opens to let air into the engine.
Because this process eliminates turbo lag, improving responsiveness and performance, Pop and Bang is also known as the Anti-Lag System (ALS). And the better the response, the happier the driver is, in our experience. Agree?

Most people aiming for individual pops and bangs require a more intense sound. Going too far with the modifications can be very damaging to the valves, exhaust and even the turbo. Many stock parts are not designed to withstand the extreme temperatures and pressures that inevitably come with the most aggressive pops and bangs.
Level 1 Pop & Bang provides moderate levels of pop and bang. When we say “moderate,” it’s important to note that they are by no means shy. They’re more than enough to put a smile on most customers’ faces, and Level 1 Pop & Bang comes with other benefits as well. For example, you don’t need aftermarket parts or other hardware modifications on most Tier 1 vehicles. The pops and bangs are designed to deliver the amazing sound but also ensure the safety of all parts including the most vulnerable ones like the catalytic converter.
However, some people want the extreme and for them we offer Stage 2 Pop & Bang. Tier 2 actually includes a number of different upgrades that help us customize your tuning to your liking. The initial requirements for Stage 2 include an aftermarket or sport exhaust and the exclusion of the stock catalytic converter. These bearing parts are not powerful enough to deal with the violent pops and bangs, so they must be removed.
We mentioned the two core changes, other changes depend on customer’s requests. We have a dedicated team of experts who can carry out all the necessary calculations and tests and offer the best advice for each individual case. Due to the different requirements of our customers, however, the roughest conversions are carried out on our own responsibility.
CAN EXHAUST FLAME DAMAGE YOUR CAR?

Connections between humans and cats can be traced back to some of the world’s earliest civilizations, most notably ancient Egypt where cats were considered divine symbols. Cats also appeared in Greek mythology, notably Hecate, goddess of magic, sorcery, the moon and witchcraft, was described as having a cat both as a pet and as a familiar (a supernatural creature believed to be one of the witch helps). .
Written records link black cats to the occult as early as the 13th century when Pope Gregory IX. issued an official church document entitled “Vox in Rama” on June 13, 1233. “In it, black cats were declared an incarnation of Satan,” says Layla Morgan Wilde, author of Black Cats Tell: True Tales And Inspiring Images. “The decree marked the beginning of the Inquisition and the Church-sanctioned hunts for heretics and/or witches. Originally intended to quell the growing cult of Luciferians in Germany, it quickly spread across Europe.”

In addition to their early association with Satan, cats were also inseparably associated with witches in medieval Europe. According to Cerridwen Fallingstar, Wiccan priestess and author of Broth from the Cauldron: A Wisdom Journey through Everyday Magic, witches were the pre-Christian pagan practitioners of Europe.
Although the early Christian church in Europe coexisted with witches as the church grew in power, they said they saw witches as their direct competition in winning people’s hearts and minds. That’s when the church began hunting, persecuting, torturing, and killing witches in large numbers, she explains.
“Witches honored nature and had a deep respect for plants and animals,” says Fallingstar. “The affection between man and beast was therefore viewed as ‘diabolical’ or diabolical, and the old lady with her cats was viewed as suspect.”
Not only did the early Christians fear the connection they made between witches, cats and the devil, they also saw both as a threat. “Cats, like the women accused of witchcraft, tend to display a healthy disrespect for authority,” she notes. “They don’t flatter even the unworthy like dogs. Independent women and independent animals should not be tolerated in the church.”
At one point, witch-cat mating narrowed to black cats, though Fallingstar says it’s not entirely clear why that happened. “The very relationship between witches and black cats is probably conceited, but it’s possible that black cats are better moulters since they can’t be seen at night and therefore have a hunting advantage,” she explains. “Witches tend to be practical.”
Eventually, the fear of black cats and their association with witchcraft made its way across the Atlantic thanks to the Puritan colonists, says Daniel Compora, associate professor of English language and literature at the University of Toledo. “The idea that witches could turn into their familiars probably came from those accused of witchcraft who have cats as pets,” he explains.

Cats are blamed for spreading the plague
In the Middle Ages, it wasn’t uncommon for cats to be killed as they were associated with evil, Compora says. Some people even went so far as to blame cats for spreading bubonic plague and used this as another reason to get rid of them. However, their ill-conceived plan backfired.
“In a particularly bizarre irony, killing the cats helped fuel the spread of the plague,” Compora explains. “With the reduced number of cats to control the rodent population, the disease spread rapidly.”

Given the belief in medieval Europe that devils and witches were able to take the form of black cats, it makes sense that superstition developed around their crossing paths, says Phoebe Millerwhite, folklorist and artist. “So a black cat that crosses your path could very well be on a witch’s mission,” she notes. “It might as well be the devil in disguise – and nobody wants to meet the devil. That explains why a black cat crossing your path is considered a bad omen.”
This notion continued into the Renaissance, Fallingstar says, when a black cat crossing your path may have indicated a witch had sent her familiar to harm you. “Many frightened farmers of the time might have rushed to the nearest church and paid for a priest to bless them and remove any curse that the cat might have placed,” she says. “Since this was a source of income for the church, such fears would likely have been fueled.”
But the notion that black cats bring bad luck isn’t universal, according to Compora. In fact, some cultures believe that black cats bring good luck.
“Their resemblance to the cat goddess Bastet led them to be worshiped in ancient Egypt,” he explains. “In other countries like Scotland and Japan, they are known to represent prosperity. Whether a black cat is viewed as a benevolent creature or an evil supernatural force seems to depend entirely on which lore one adopts.”

The strange time a relative let a cat near her, she became hysterical. We couldn’t help but laugh at her overreaction, and yet her fear of cats was real.
It was partly based on seeing a creepy video about a cat when she was a kid. She vividly recalls watching a black cat with frightening green eyes jump in a man’s mouth and choke him. She’s since said there’s something unsettling about their piercing stare and how quickly they can scurry away and vanish into thin air. When pressed, she has even gone so far as to say, “Cats are Satan incarnate, using their cuteness and attractiveness to charm and do the devil’s work.”
Like many teens in lockdown, I really wanted a cat
On the contrary, I am an ailurophile. I am passionate about cats. I love their intelligence, curiosity and how unassailable they seem. Like many lockdown teenagers who study for hours at home while struggling to stay positive, I really wanted a cat. I’m not alone; A total of 3.2 million UK households have acquired a pet since the pandemic began.
No wonder so many young people like me are behind this trend. Almost two-thirds of new pet owners are between the ages of 16 and 34, and 56% of new pet owners have children at home. So I tried my best to convince her. It inevitably took a while.
My first attempt to persuade her failed, and in the end my mother’s fear won out. Then I thought I’d try again, so without telling my mom I put a deposit on a kitten, but the seller was a scammer and it all failed.
Despite this, I still wanted a cat and desperately needed my mother’s approval so that she could allow me to purchase a cat from a reputable source without attempting to acquire one surreptitiously on the internet. In the end, there was only one approach that I knew could work. I used my religion to convince them.
We are practicing Muslims and I finally realized that this was the way to her heart when it came to cats and I wondered why I hadn’t tried this approach earlier.
In Islam, cats are considered sacred animals. They are especially admired for their cleanliness. They are considered ritually pure, which is why they are allowed to enter houses and even mosques. According to authentic traditions, one can wash oneself for prayer with the same water that a cat drank from. It’s even legal to eat from the same bowl a cat ate from.
Unlike dogs, cats have been revered in Muslim culture for centuries. So much so that one of Prophet Muhammad’s companions was known as Abu Hurairah (father of kittens) because of his affection for cats. The Prophet himself was a great cat lover – Muezza was the name of his favorite cat.
There is a famous story told in the Muslim community about Prophet Muhammad’s relationship with cats. The story goes that one day Muhammad was awakened by the call to prayer. As he began to dress, he discovered that Muezza was sleeping on the sleeve of his prayer shawl. Instead of waking her up, he used scissors to cut off the sleeve, all while the cat could sleep undisturbed.
To tell the truth I would have loved to have had a dog but Islam forbids Muslims to keep them. If they do, there is a penalty – whoever owns the dog loses good deeds every day, although there are exceptions to this rule. Keeping dogs for hunting, protecting livestock, and guarding crops is permitted.

For these reasons, I was never allowed near a dog and the idea of owning one never seriously crossed my mind. But it’s an infallible part of British culture: we’re a nation of dog lovers, so growing up I felt like I was missing out. I could never play fetch with a dog or get close to one. In my culture, they are considered dirty and if I had even petted one, I would have to take a shower.
Yet as a nation, we unfairly compare cats to dogs. Even the most affectionate and characterful cat can make a bad first impression. Cats communicate subtly and quietly. With dogs, what you see is what you get – they have no hidden traits or personality quirks. Unlike dogs, cats can lead independent lives alongside their owner. They don’t require walks or need to go outside to poop, and they don’t need a lot of space; All you need is a sofa and before long a purring cat will be on your knees.
In the end, it only took me a few weeks to tell my mom how seraphic and spiritual cats are in Islam before she fell in love with the idea. It felt like a sacrifice for her, but she knew how badly I wanted one. Since mothers are mothers, she also spoke to many different Muslims about their cats, and eventually her fear melted away.
So, against all odds, I got a kitten. Within weeks of Milo moving in with us, my mother’s attitude changed and now, three months later, she has fully adopted him as her fifth child. Energetic and torturous as a teenager, he’s also slim, cute, and as vulnerable as a baby, which my mom likes. It helps that he also has beautiful green eyes and the softest fur.

At first she was afraid and doubtful of him, but little by little she got to know him. One day, to my great amazement, I came back from a stressful day in college to find Milo sitting peacefully on her lap while she watched TV. Now she does everything for him: cleans his litter box, feeds him and plays with him. As soon as she wakes up in the morning, she runs down the stairs to kiss him.
It’s very amusing when I remind my mother how she used to feel about cats. Now she is the proud owner of Milo and has been doing more research on the spread of cats in Islam. She says, “Cats are a blessing from God, bringing nothing but happiness and positivity to their owners.”
My mother spends hours every day staring at him in awe. She spams everyone with Milo’s WhatsApp photos and texts me every few hours about her favorite child. She returns from shopping laden with gifts and toys for him.
Who would have thought that Islam would help cure my mother’s ailurophobia and turn her into a full fledged cat lover? Sometimes I think she loves him more than me. She says he’s like a playful, charming teenager who doesn’t answer. Well, she’s not wrong.

How can I make my car pop and bang?
Even with a standard restrictive exhaust, there is a chance of pops and pops if the car is over fueled. Because of this, you can hear the popping and popping more clearly once a cat has been removed.

bang, bang and flames; everyone likes that, right? Well hell yes you do and that’s why ECU remappings that make your exhaust pop, pop and flame spurt out of the tailpipe when you let off the gas are very popular these days.
But how do they work? And, more importantly, are they bad for your engine’s health? Well, unless you’ve lived in a cave for the past few years, we’re sure you’ve heard plenty of good and bad comments; It’s time for a Fast Car investigation into the matter so we can find out the truth for you guys.
Since this is quite a controversial topic in the tuning scene at the moment, many companies understandably declined to get involved. But luckily the guys at Motorsport Developments are experts when it comes to remapping all factory ECUs and were more than happy to give us their words of wisdom and confirm our insights on the subject – so a big thank you to them. They are certainly the right people to contact if you want a secure but effective card yourself!
What are pop and bang maps?
The exhaust systems of heavily tuned cars have of course popped, popped and flared since the beginning of time, but have you noticed lately that many more cars than ever before are popping and popping their exhaust pipes when the driver takes their foot off the accelerator? Mildly tuned engines and even a number of factory cars now have a cool bubbling exhaust when overrun.
Because many tuners and manufacturers have recognized that owners love such noises. And since modern engine management is so damn capable, it means they are now commonly mapped into the car’s ECU tune.
How does it make the bang and bang?
For this part, let’s start with the expert words from Capt. Stewart Sanderson of Motorsport Developments…
“Pops and Bang Maps, or bubbling as the OEM calls it (yes, it’s so common on production cars that even the manufacturers have a name for it!) is simply a calibration function within the ECU, where we use a specially designed, very lean one Misfires as soon as you let off the gas.”
Normally on an engine, when you close the throttle, your injectors don’t fire at all, removing all energy from your engine, allowing it to slow down: this is smooth, quiet and safe, and looks and sounds like anything sensible. normal cars that we are used to. No popping, no flames, no nothing.
Back to Stu’s word of wisdom… “If we want to make a bubbling sound while the engine is slowing down, we need fuel. But burning fuel also creates some piston load and slows the rate at which the engine decelerates on overrun – so we have to somehow dissipate the energy to prevent that,” he explains. “To achieve this we have to do two things: retard the ignition timing to reduce the torque that allows the car to decelerate normally, and run a very lean air/fuel ratio so that it doesn’t generate too much heat, which could affect reliability. ”
The heavily retarded ignition also means that much of the combustion takes place with the exhaust valves open (actually within the exhaust system) and much of the fuel is ignited through the hot exhaust and/or catalytic converter, hence the bubbling, popping and crackling you hear from your tailpipe.
“The intensity of the bubbling on these setups varies depending on the exhaust gas temperature – how hard the car was driven. The hotter the exhaust system, the easier it is for that small amount of fuel that we add to vaporize,” explains Stu.
But what if you don’t want subtle OEM-style burbles and fancy something crazier? Well the methods are similar to the above but with a little more fuel added and even more ignition delay. We’ve even seen people go as far as opening the idle control valve or opening the drive-by-wire throttle a bit to get more air, too. In fact, these modifications (albeit at more extreme settings and for more than a few seconds at a time) are actually the basis of how anti-lag systems work on rally cars. But this isn’t a performance mod, it’s just for making cool sounds and flames!
Can crackle maps be applied to any engine?
In a word, no. But it can be done with many more engines today than ever before. In theory, this can be done on any petrol engine – naturally aspirated, supercharged or turbocharged – anything that has an ECU that allows the fuel and ignition timing to be heavily modified, which means most these days.
Some cars can retard their ignition even further and offer the option to open the idle valve or open the throttle a bit, all of which can deliver more extreme pops and bangs if you so desire. Provided you can find a tuner that is able to adapt your ECU accordingly, this can be applied to the vast majority of engines, at least to some extent.
Do pop and bang maps have any performance benefits?
no This only happens because of the noise. Since it works similarly to rally anti-lag systems, really extreme setups could theoretically work like a mild anti-lag system on a turbocharged engine and help keep your turbo revved up. But in reality, the pops, bangs, and bubbles usually only occur for a few seconds after you let off the gas, and it’s all because of the sound. If you could tune it to the extreme that it had true anti-lag, you would call it anti-lag, not a crackle map!
Are pop and bang maps safe? Do they damage your engine?
This is by far the most contentious part of this topic, and while the answer is sometimes yes, it is highly unlikely that there will be any real problems, provided your map was created by someone who knows what they are doing. Any potential reliability issues will stem from the same thing that gave performance remapping (or chipping as it was called a decade or two ago) a bad rap—people doing it badly.
OEMs have ECU tunes that contain “burbles” that are reliable and rated for 100,000+ miles of hard use. Reliability issues result from remapping (be it for sheer power or for pops and bangs) done in an unsafe manner – too extreme for what the engine can handle, and therefore damaging.
“We offer more extreme versions of the pop and bubbling, but since that requires adding more fuel, you can only have it with a catalyst-free exhaust. There is only so much fuel you can burn before poisoning the catalyst. If it smells like sulfur, it dies,” says Stu.
However, more than just the cat can be damaged if the bang-and-bang remapping is too extreme for what your engine can handle. Extreme heat from richer mixtures and severely retarded ignition can cause extreme exhaust temperatures that even with a de-cat could potentially damage oxygen sensors, exhaust systems and possibly more.
But what are the odds of actual internal engine failure on any of these cards? Well, if you look at the internet, every man and his pet monkey has a story about a friend of a friend whose uncle damaged an engine as a result. In reality, we have yet to find a single case where internal engine damage has been proven to be caused by the pops and pops mapped into the ECU.
Certain engines have relatively weak exhaust valves – Renault F4R for example, and these cards have been blamed for their damage on a few occasions. But hard used versions of these engines often end up with the same valve failure regardless of map, so it’s still more speculation than proof.
Again, speaking to the guys at Motorsport Developments, Kenny has seen cars come into their shop with some pretty extreme crackle map tunes done elsewhere, with 30 degrees of spark retard and pretty rich fuel. This borders on the settings you would use for an anti-lag system, although on a map like this it only happens for a few seconds at a time. This is certainly not something they would recommend for a typical engine and would cause really high EGTs during the “crackle” period. It therefore has a higher damage potential. Despite this, they have never seen engine internals damaged as a result.
Should You Get a Pop and Bang Card?
Some people love pop and bang maps while others hate them because they feel they make “wrong” sounds. But if you want one, there’s no reason to think that getting things right will destroy your engine. There’s still a lot of debate about this, but try as we might, we haven’t seen any proof at all.
This is the important part though – you need to make sure you have the right setup for your engine. Do you have a cat or an engine with a known weak point in the exhaust system or the exhaust valves? If that’s the case, you’re advised to keep it at a reasonable, almost OEM-esque whoosh, rather than having a full WW3 in your exhaust.
But whatever your setup, choose your tuner wisely. Find someone to ensure it is reliable and safe for your particular setup and chosen use. Pops and bangs are fun, but an engine that’s not broken is even more fun, so don’t just take someone who promises the craziest and loudest fireworks out of your exhaust – that just calls for trouble.
