There is something quite powerful about the story of gay sexual awakening set against a film that showcases so many aspects of traditional Georgian culture. It was also quite brave given the anti-LGBT conservatism that has gripped the country. Faced with the challenges of poverty and a broken home, a young man (Levan Gelbakhiani) pursues a difficult dream of becoming a dancer for the national company. He meets a competing dancer (Bachi Valishvili) and the two begin training together, leading to friendship and deeper feelings that present a challenge of their own.
I loved the insight into Georgian culture (dance, music, food, weddings, etc.) and confess I wished there was more of it. I also wish the dance sequences hadn’t been edited the way they were – there’s so much natural power and grace in these movements, and I think it would have served them better just to keep the camera still halfway for extended periods of time. That being said, the real story here is about growing up and being gay in such a conservative country, and that’s where the film shines. It exercises restraint by showing budding love simply and honestly, and doesn’t spend much time taunting the homophobic men threatening on the outskirts. It takes a nice little look at the hypocrisy of the Orthodox Church by telling the story of a priest who is responsible for “fixing” another dancer who had to leave the group because he was gay and having sex with him instead would have.
The cast is very good, if not great, throughout, and some of my favorite scenes were the moments with the two young men’s cute grannies. Another is the touching moment between brothers trying to reconcile the traditional way with non-conformity and still love each other. Finally, the final dance sequence, which shows courage and bravery but makes it clear that he’s personalized the dance, is stirring, and the film ends on a strong note.
