One of the main risks people face when using earplugs is not hearing the alarm clock in the morning. In fact, it’s probably the first fear that popped into your head when you first thought about buying and using earplugs yourself. You can buy a set of ear tips, which are basically a combination of ear tips and wireless earphones. This way you can actually hear the sound in your earbuds when the alarm goes off. Technically these are called smart earbuds and there are quite a number of manufacturers that have expanded their business and are making such products such as: B. Hush.

These are headphones that are inserted into your ear canal and have two important characteristics that will interest you. First of all, they can be paired with your smartphone or other mobile device so you can play music, listen to podcasts and audiobooks, watch videos and use them basically like any other wireless headphones with a Bluetooth connection.

But that doesn’t mean that using earplugs doesn’t pose risks.

Knowing what overuse or misuse of earplugs entails is important so you can take proper sleep hygiene measures that come with inserting a foreign object in your ear canal. First off, you could experience some pretty uncomfortable ear canal irritation if you use earbuds that are too big, or if you keep squeezing them or trying to push them as far as possible. There is a right way and a wrong way to insert earplugs into the ear canal. Always twist the eartips as you push them further into your ears and never try to insert them too far up as you risk damaging your eardrums.

Also keep in mind that our ears produce a certain amount of earwax every day. When earwax naturally slides out of your ear, bacteria and dirt are eliminated along with it. An ear plug can force this natural wax to stay in the ear canal, where it can build up to a point where you can get a bad ear infection that may require medical attention.

Too much earwax is generally removed through a quick and non-invasive medical procedure or by using a special type of ear drops. Ear infections, on the other hand, are treated with antibiotics that require a doctor’s prescription.

Depending on the type of earbuds you buy, you’ll either need to clean them regularly or replace them altogether. For example, foam earplugs are soft and easy to mold to the shape of your ear canal. While they are extremely comfortable and typically don’t cause irritation, the foam structure also makes it very easy for bacterial buildup to linger on the earplugs for too long. Most foam ear tips are interchangeable and you will often find packs containing up to 100 pairs of foam ear tips. On the other hand, if you choose silicone ear tips, you have a product that is usually easy to clean (which you should do daily if possible). As someone who isn’t a super heavy sleeper, I’ve never really thought about the challenges of being woken up when you’re sound asleep and your brain is disconnected from the world! The default alarm duration for an Android phone (like most smartphones) is 10 minutes, but if that’s not enough, well there are ways to change it! Of course, the easiest way is to always set several alarms at intervals of a few minutes. So if one doesn’t wake you up, the next one will.

There are also alarm clocks for heavy sleepers, clocks that roll around and make it really hard for you to switch off without getting out of bed and moving. And at that point, heck, if you’re moving, you might as well get up and get on with your day, right? 🙂

This leads to another simple suggestion: make sure you leave your phone across the room from your bed so you can’t turn off the alarm without getting out of bed. Same basic logic.

Now launch clock app to change alarm duration on your android phone. You will see something like this:

You can see I’ve set the alarm for 8:30, which only goes off automatically on weekdays, so I can sleep a little later (until 9:00) on weekends. Simple enough, really, and you already know it all. But do you see those three dots on top of each other in the top right? Tap it to bring up the Clock app menu:

You can guess how to proceed from here, but let’s walk through the steps. Tap “Settings” to go to the clock app settings on your Pixel 3:

There are actually quite a few settings you can check out here – notably the ability to switch from analog to digital, set your home time zone, and adjust alarm volume (yes, mine is set to zero. I can vibrate to wake me up!)

Tap on “Calm After” and you’ll see that the Android developers have anticipated your situation quite well:

Here you can ring and ring and ring for as long as your body demands. Be careful though, if you set it to “Never” and forget your phone while an alarm is set, it will just suck all the battery and eventually die. V. sad.
