When was the alarm clock invented?

The first known mechanical alarm clock inventor is Levi Hutchins, an American who in 1787 invented a personal alarm device to wake him at 4 a.m. He didn’t even have to be at work early, it was simply his “firm rule” to wake before sunrise.

Yi Xing was a bit of a high achiever. As a mathematician, engineer, Buddhist monk and astronomer, Xing was asked to improve calendars in China. He went one step further, building on centuries of Chinese innovation to create an astronomical clock, which he gave the catchy name “Water-Driven Spherical Bird’s Eye-View Map of the Heaven”.

The clock was a little more complicated than the average clock of today and not only measured time but also the distances to planets and stars. In the clock, a water wheel turned gears, at different times puppet shows and gongs sounded.

Yi Xing’s ingenious version of an alarm clock from 725 is one of the earliest recorded devices of this type in the world. for his legendary morning lectures, this is proof that people have been searching for ways to get up on time for thousands of years.

The idea was repeated by Europeans who created complex displays in chime clocks in town squares. The next step was to make such clocks smaller so that they could be used individually. Historians believe that personal mechanical alarm clocks originated in Germany in the 15th century, but their inventors are unknown. However, most people did not own such clocks and had to rely on the sun, servants, or prayer bells. As working hours became more stringent, factory whistles were blown to encourage people who lived near their workplace to get up.

The first known mechanical alarm clock inventor is Levi Hutchins, an American who invented a personal alarm clock in 1787 to wake him up at 4am. He didn’t even have to be at work early, it was just his “hard rule” to wake up before sunrise. Although there used to be other alarm clocks, Hutchins doesn’t seem to have heard of them.

He wrote of his invention: “It was the idea of a clock that could chime an alarm that was difficult, not the realization of the idea. It was easy to ring the bell at the pre-arranged hour.”

An illustration for an 1846 advertisement for a “dual-function alarm clock” “used daily by postmen, policemen, railroad workers and others who have to get up early in the morning”. (Photo: Internet Archive/Public Domain)

However, Hutchins, who was more interested in getting up in the morning than commercial advantages, never patented his invention. Half a century later, in 1847, Frenchman Antoine Redier was the first to patent an adjustable alarm clock. The adjustable alarm clock allowed the user to set an alarm time instead of letting others dictate it.

Each adjustable alarm clock had a hole in each number on the dial. A needle was inserted into the hole that responded to the time it took you to get up. Very easy unless you wanted to be more specific than the next hour!

Redier’s patent didn’t cross the oceans, however, so American Seth E. Thomas jumped into the action in 1876 and patented his own version. His eponymous company became a mass manufacturer of the alarm clock and brought the invention to the masses.

“In an expanding urban and industrial world, people had a duty to know the time and be punctual,” writes historian Martin Levinson. “In the late nineteenth century, many consumers were actively looking for alarm clocks.”

But not everyone felt the need for a mechanical solution. Since the beginning of the industrial revolution, people had found ways to ensure they got to work on time. A popular method, at least in the UK and Ireland, was to hire a knocker. With everything from a cudgel to a peashooter, the knocker banged on doors and windows to wake those inside.

Often this service worked on a sort of subscription basis, with those who were awakened paying pennies towards the wake-up call. Everyone from old people to policemen took part in the action, and industrial cities hired large numbers of knockers. However, in the 1920s, as alarm clocks became more widespread, the unique profession began to fade.

In the mid-20th century, alarm clock manufacturers continued to innovate, with portable travel clocks and clock radios that allowed consumers to wake up to something more captivating than a bell.

Then World War II began, slowing the growth of the alarm clock industry as nearly all factories in the US and UK were forcibly zoned for wartime production. Since war workers also had to get up on time, both governments allowed some alarm clocks to be made.

However, metals were scarce at the time, so most wartime clocks were made of a combination, similar to a reinforced egg carton, of shredded paper and pressed wood. Despite this, they were still few and far between, with production levels nearly six times lower than before the war began. Because of this reduced supply, the U.S. War Production Board, “that no one buys a war alarm unless it satisfies a genuine need, not just a want, desire, or whim.”

While war limited production, it couldn’t stop the passage of time forever—or the people who worried about what that time was like. As the war dragged on and old alarm clocks began to break, pressure mounted for a larger supply. The government, realizing that alarm clocks had become essential to the smooth running of the industry, allowed some factories to resell their products. With factories up and running again as early as 1944, alarm clocks soon became one of the first products to launch so-called post-war designs.

The heart of the alarm clock: the snooze button. (Photo: Sean McGrath/CC BY 2.0)

Enter, the snooze button. Conventional wisdom holds that the snooze was the accomplishment or fault of Lew Wallace, the famous author of Ben-Hur. However, the Lew Wallace Museum claims that Wallace could not have created the snooze button, although he did invent a few other things. In fact, the author died in 1905, nearly half a century before General Electric-Telechron made a snooze clock. Despite this, the feature quickly became popular and now exists as an essential part of alarm clocks.

Today, the alarm clock in its original form is endangered as alarm apps have become ubiquitous. When UK network operator O2 surveyed its customers in 2012 about how their smartphones replaced other devices, it found that the alarm clock was replaced most often; 54 percent of O2’s smartphone customers had relegated their alarm clock to the dustbin of history.

Although its form can change, the alarm clock is unlikely to ever go away. Or that you will ever get up without at least one nap.

Apple has made some excellent improvements to the Reminders application for Macs, iPhones, and iPads, although it works a little differently and you’ll need to update any devices you’re using with the system to get the most out of it.

What has changed?

The new version of Reminders makes the software more useful for more tasks.

Limited functionality has made it more of a personal reminder system, but recent improvements make it more valuable for work-related task processing.

The main features of this version (explained in more detail below) include:

Smart Lists. The main screen shows four smart lists (Today, Scheduled, Flagged, and All) that make it easy to find upcoming reminders.

A new Quick Toolbar that offers buttons for time, date, locations, and more.

Sub-tasks support: Each reminder can have sub-tasks.

Various reminder lists: for example work, school, home, medication.

Common Lists.

New colors, a search tool and reminders from within apps.

Most features work more or less the same on Macs as they do on Apple’s mobile devices, although the desktop versions benefit from additional display space.

The notifications during messages feature is very useful. Turn it on and you’ll get a reminder when you’re talking to someone in Messages. As an example, Apple speaks of a reminder to send someone a flight plan during a message call.

Apple

I heard you need to update all your devices?

This is true.

The updated Reminders app requires that you also update all the devices you are using to access the latest features. That means iCloud reminders are only available on your other devices if they’re running the latest software; Reminders created on devices not running the latest software will only be visible on other devices running that version of the software.

In practice, this means that you won’t get a reminder on an iPad running iOS 12 on an iPhone running iOS 13 or a Mac running macOS Catalina. If you create a reminder on your Catalina Mac, you won’t get it on your iOS 12 iPad Pro, but you’ll get it on all your other devices running the latest operating systems.

If you update an old device to the latest software, any new reminders created on the device in the old iOS will be lost. And if you create a reminder on a device running the latest version of the app without actually opening it (e.g. set a reminder with Siri), those reminders will also be lost when you launch the app.

How is this set up?

The easiest way to avoid this complexity is to choose when you want to update all your devices first, and then do it at about the same time.

If you do, you should then open Reminders on each device in turn and update to the latest version of the app.

When you launch the app, you’ll see a “Welcome to Reminders” notice, allowing you to upgrade now or later.

Don’t set new reminders until you’ve updated all your devices and launched the app for the first time.

You can view reminders stored in iCloud online at any time.

The upgrade process does not affect CalDAV and Exchange accounts.

How to create memories

There are three main ways to create new memories:

In the Reminders app.

With Siri.

Using the Share pane in an app.

In the Reminders app

Open the app and tap the list you want to add a reminder to, or tap Add list to create a new list of reminders. Tap the Plus/New Reminder button, write your reminder and tap Done. When you create a reminder in the app, you also get access to the quick toolbar.

Using Siri

You can ask Siri to set reminders. If you have your home or work address in Contacts, Siri also understands location-based reminders. You can also ask Siri to “remind you” while you’re in another app.

Via the share window

You can set reminders in other apps. Tap the share button and type the reminder. Tap on Details and in the following screen you can set priorities, add the reminder to a specific list and select the date and time and enable alarms for that reminder.

How to edit a reminder

When reviewing your reminder lists, you’ll see a circled “I” to the right of each reminder. Tap this item to edit the reminder.

In the editing menu you can define locations, day, date, time and locations for reminders. You can also add notes, paste a URL, and set priorities. It is also possible to set different notification times and frequencies.

Leif Johnson/IDG Here’s what you see when you click each button on the toolbar.

How do smart lists work?

Smart Lists are four pre-selected collections of reminders that automatically appear on the main Reminders screen. Tap the Today, Scheduled, Starred, or All button to find reminders from all your reminder lists.

For example, if you have work and personal reminders and need to take your medication every few hours, you should find all of those reminders in the Today element.

Using the Quick Access Toolbar

The quick toolbar appears when you enter a new reminder. It shows you which list you are in and the contents of your reminder. It provides tools to set time and dates, and define locations for location-based reminders (arrive home, arrive at work, get in the car, and customs).

You can also tag reminders and add attachments to them in the form of photos from your photo library, your camera, or photos scanned with your camera.

What are subtasks?

Subtasks are memories that live within the main memory. Think of these like the smaller tasks you need to do in order to complete a larger task. There are three ways to create these:

Tap a reminder, tap the edit button, then tap Subtasks, and write a new reminder.

Press and hold a reminder, then drag it onto another reminder to turn it into a target reminder sub-task.

Swipe right on an existing reminder and tap indent. This will make that reminder a sub-task for the reminder that’s directly above it in the list.

How do deaf people use alarm clocks?

~ By Lee Jackson

Have you ever wondered how deaf people wake up in the morning? The most natural way is from the sun itself. Leave curtains open to peek through windows to brighten the room, and deaf people can feel the lighting while they sleep. Some have their own internal clock that wakes them up. But for those who don’t have an internal alarm clock, how do deaf people use alarm clocks to wake up?

alarm clock technology

Just kidding! I don’t think anyone would want to wake up with their hair that messy. However, we use special types of technology to wake up. As with fire alarms, we use the same type of device as an alarm clock. Depending on whether you’re a light sleeper or a heavy sleeper, we all have preferences. Options include a flash of light and a bed shaker called Sonic Alert.

sound alarm

This is one of the most common ways deaf people use alarm clocks. As you can see, the shaker stands under the mattress and shakes the bed. The sleeping person can feel the vibration of the device. Another option is the flash of light. Each lamp can be connected to the alarm clock and will flash when the alarm clock rings.

sonic boom

Another popular brand for heavy sleepers is called Sonic Boom.

Even my son who listens uses this too. The Sonic Boom has a stronger shake and louder alarm that will wake you up and get you out of bed.

iLuv SmartShaker

With the new technologies we have today, even deaf and hard of hearing people can use their smartphones as alarm clocks. For those who have Bluetooth, the Boom comes with a shaker that can be placed under a pillow. However, I would recommend putting it between the mattress and the box springs to keep it in place. The shaker can be easily knocked off while sleeping. I’ve heard pros and cons about this type of alarm clock. Some say it doesn’t wobble as much as the Sonic Alert or Boom. But others love it.

For those who don’t have Bluetooth, you can use your own phone’s vibration setting. However, every phone has different vibration strengths.

Android users

So for Android users, you have a choice of tones under Settings and Accessibility, and you might be able to include an LED flash. Flash lights on phones may vary. A friend of mine uses a water bottle next to the phone to make the flashlight blink brighter when it comes on.

iPhone users

For iPhone users, Siri is finally accessible to the deaf and hard of hearing. If your iPhone is updated (iOS 11), you may want to enable the type option for Siri instead of the default language setting. Turn on Press Home for Siri. Go to Accessibility and search for Siri, then turn on Input to Siri.

To use the alarm clock, some people leave their smartphone on their shoulder, stomach or chest while they sleep. It depends on the person how they can feel the vibration of their phone. Many reports lately recommend not charging the phone under the pillow as it can catch fire. However, if you do, set your phone to flight mode to avoid exposing it to radiation. One of the most common problems with using smartphones as alarm clocks is that it could be accidentally knocked off the bed.

Smart Watches

There are also several smartwatches like the Apple and Samsung watch or the Fitbit.

People may prefer this because it is always with them and can be synced to their phone. Even people who can hear use smartwatches when they don’t want to wake others.

Conclusion

Deaf people use alarm clocks just like people who can hear. But instead of making a sound, they rely on their sense of sight and touch.

Why do we wake up right before alarm?

The shocked feeling you experience when your alarm suddenly bursts into sound also causes stress to your body and so to avoid being woken up in fright, your body produces PER earlier in the night. This is the reason why you may find yourself awake a few minutes before your alarm rings.

Do you often wake up just before the alarm clock rings?

There’s a scientific explanation for how our bodies can tell time, even when we’re asleep.

Your internal clock is controlled by a bundle of nerves called the suprachiasmatic in the center of your brain.

These nerves control blood pressure, body temperature, our sense of time, and can decide when you feel tired and wide awake.

Your internal clock responds to a routine and becomes more efficient if you go to bed at the same time every night and wake up at the same time every morning.

The protein that controls sleep

A protein called PER regulates your sleep-wake cycle as protein levels rise and fall, peaking in the evening and lowest at night.

Low PER results in decreased blood pressure and slows your heart rate, making thinking a little more difficult. That’s what causes this tired feeling.

By maintaining a consistent sleep schedule, your body learns to adjust and increase your PER levels around the time your alarm clock normally goes off.

This increase in PER usually occurs about an hour before you wake up because your body releases stress hormones to prepare you to wake up.

The shocked feeling you get when your alarm clock suddenly goes off also causes stress to your body. To avoid waking you up with a fright, your body produces PER earlier in the night.

This is why you can be awake a few minutes before your alarm clock rings.

Can you bring yourself to wake up earlier?

Some research suggests that people can trick themselves into waking up on time.

Researchers at the University of Lübeck in Germany conducted an experiment to test this theory.

They asked 15 volunteers to sleep in a controlled environment for three nights. Half of the group were told they would be awakened at 6:30 am and the other half were told they would be awakened at 9:30 am.

The researchers then woke both groups at 6:30 a.m. and found that the group who were told they would be woken at 6:30 a.m. had higher levels of PER in their bodies.

The group given the later wake-up time felt more tired upon waking, despite getting as much sleep as the 6:30 a.m. group.

How long do alarm clocks last?

An Android has a default alarm duration of 10 minutes. Unlike the iPhone, you can change how long an Android alarm rings for. You can change the ‘silences after’ setting in the settings tab related to the alarm.

How to set an alarm on your Android phone or tablet in 4 simple steps

Let’s face it, alarm clocks are annoying. Despite being one of the most important inventions in the world, when we don’t always want to be bothered, they bother us.

When our alarm clocks go off, we usually put them on hold or snooze them. But have you ever wondered if your alarm clock would ever go off by itself?

Do alarm clocks turn off by themselves?

The short answer is yes. Alarm clocks usually turn themselves off. But the long answer is that it depends on the type of alarm clock you use.

When alarm clocks first became popular, everyone used a wind-up clock. You would wind it up to the time you wanted and when it went off it would keep ringing until you stopped it or it unwound itself.

These days, digital and plug-in alarm clocks have preset limits on how long they ring. You can generally expect a modern alarm clock to turn itself off, especially if you’re using an alarm clock on your phone. However, it’s usually possible to turn this feature off so your alarm never stops ringing (until the battery dies, of course).

How long does an iPhone alarm sound?

If you’re using the iPhone’s Clock app, the default length of time the alarm will sound is 15 minutes. After this time, both the sound and the vibration of the alarm will stop. You still have the option to snooze or stop the alarm on the screen.

This is presumably a battery-saving feature, since the iPhone is likely assuming you’re unavailable (like you left your phone at work), not just ignoring you. It most likely keeps the stop/snooze information on screen to let you know an alarm has been triggered.

You cannot change the length of time an iPhone alarm sounds. However, if you download another alarm clock app, it may have different settings that you can tweak.

How long does an Android alarm clock ring?

An android has a default alarm duration of 10 minutes. Unlike the iPhone, you can change how long an Android alarm goes off. You can change the Silence After setting on the alarm’s Settings tab.

Most Androids allow you to change the duration to 1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, 25 minutes, or never. Setting your alarm to ‘Never’ will keep the alarm going until the battery dies – so be warned if you tend to leave your phone anywhere unattended!

How long does an Alexa alarm clock ring?

Most Alexa users report that the alarm turns off after 4 minutes by default. However, you can customize how long an Alexa alarm sounds. You can do this by asking Alexa to set an alarm for the duration at a time.

How long does an alarm clock snooze?

Most alarm clocks in the modern world have a default setting of 9 minutes snooze.

Interestingly, the reason for the 9 minutes is tradition. There are many theories as to how the 9-minute snooze came about. The most popular theory is that when the snooze function was invented in the 1950s, the internal workings of standard watches could not be altered so that two gears overlapped. This meant watchmakers had two choices: snooze for under or over ten minutes.

Back then, people thought that more than 10 minutes was too long. So the engineers decided on 9 minutes.

These days most alarm clocks default to the 9 minute snooze time because that’s what people expect. Some modern alarm clocks (especially digital ones) allow you to adjust the length of your snooze.

How to set an alarm on your Android phone or tablet in 4 simple steps

So I recently upgraded to a Galaxy S5 from a BlackBerry Bold 9000 and am having issues with the default alarm clock. I’ve searched the Play Store and couldn’t find an app that fits my needs. What I’m looking for is an app that will allow me to set an alarm to a specific date and time. Suppose I book a dentist appointment months in advance and know that on a certain day I will wake up earlier than normal. How would I do that? I understand that I can set reminders for a specific date and time, but these notifications are simply a single beep that isn’t loud or long enough to wake me up.

I suppose my question is 1) is there an app to only set alarms for specific dates, or 2) is there a way to make my reminder notifications act like an alarm instead (keeps playing until I turn it off).

Thanks very much!
