As twins, you would think my boys are experts at sharing. They did it before they were even born! And while they’re good at sharing most of the time, like all preschoolers, they could use a little help. Especially now that they are in school and learning to share not only with each other but with a new group of friends in an unfamiliar environment. I thought this would be a perfect opportunity for us to try a little activity together and I’ve created a super simple game that your family can play too!

Setting up the sharing activity
This activity is really easy and only takes a few minutes. Take your beige card and use a ruler and a black marker to draw horizontal and vertical lines on one side. This will be the outside of your cone.
Then roll the paper into a cone shape, making sure the opening is wide enough for your ball to fit inside. Secure the edges with clear tape.
That’s it! You are ready to play.
Sharing activity for preschool kids

Easily adapted to a larger setting such as a classroom or playgroup, this activity gives children a chance to interact and get to know one another while also learning about sharing and friendship. And lots of fun at the same time!

My boys love this Elephant & Piggie book. Gerald Elephant buys himself some delicious ice cream and then can’t decide whether to share it with his best friend Piggie. With a light-hearted touch and plenty of humor, Elephant eventually learns that ice cream is so much better when shared with a friend. With that in mind, I thought we’d try making our own “ice cream cones” and practice sharing them with each other. This activity was tons of fun and would also make a wonderful activity for a preschool or playgroup!

It’s clear to everyone that they shouldn’t do that as we can assume they paid for their ice cream which means they deserved it. Also, elephants can eat up to 200-600 pounds of food per day. Looking at the background of the book, we can conclude that food is very scarce in their world and any amount of food that the elephant can eat is very valuable. Pigs will eat almost anything, so it’s even more important for elephants to eat the ice cream. Also, the elephant should have known that the ice cream would have melted if it took too long to eat it. He basically wasted the ice cream, which we can assume from the observations we made on the background of the book that sugar and the ice cream itself are valuable commodities. This means that the elephants wasted a lot of valuable resources that they could have used.
If we want to theorize, it’s possible that the elephant intentionally sabotage its friend the pig. If we look closely, we can see many clues as to why this is true. It’s reasonable to assume that ice cream would cost a lot in a food-poor wasteland, meaning the pig would have to pay a lot for it. It is possible that the pig watched the ice cream melt and felt sorry for the elephant. Since it’s possible that the elephant wasted the ice cream, we can believe that he’s intentionally trying to deplete the pig’s resources. Of course, this is just a theory and cannot be true without further investigation.

But thoughts of his best friend Piggie are worrying should he share his treat with her? As Gerald wrestles with the ins and outs, attentive readers will find that the ice is melting fast. By the time he decides to share, it has melted into a puddle at his feet, and Gerald realizes he “screwed it up”. But timing is everything, and Piggie shows up at that moment with a waffle of her own and happily shares it. “Not my plan,” thinks Gerald, but also realizes that this arrangement is fine. Willems’ simple text allows beginning readers to succeed on their own, although the text and illustrations lend themselves well to being read aloud. Fans of the series won’t want to miss this offering, and adults can use the simple story to prompt timely discussions about sharing, friendships, and decisions. Another winner.
