How fast to go with air Chair?

Although you can speed up to help get big air, things happen very fast at speeds over 22 mph. So save yourself a few crashes, once you’ve mastered riding the foil at 18-20 mph, keep the speed under 22mph and practice all the jumps and tricks until you have them completely mastered, 100%.

What is an Airchair?

An Air Chair is a relatively new type of water sport device. It is extremely unique, instead of riding on top of the water like with skiing or wakeboarding, you ride over the water.

Control the angle of the Air Chair by balancing with the position of the rope. This takes a lot of practice to perfect. Be aware that you will most likely fall like air If you go too high catching under the hydrofoil will remove all buoyancy and put you on the ski in a hurry The image to the right is an example of what happens after you go too high A unique experience among water sports The Air Chair requires a lot of balance and control to maneuver over the wake and then stay level as the rope is pulling you at a greater angle. The rope has kept you straight behind the boat but since the rope is almost at right angles to your movement pulls, the downward leverage is gone. You will need to compensate by leaning forward or backward to maintain level. Be aware that a rope that is too high is most likely will result in a crash as air is trapped under the rope The hydrofoil takes all buoyancy and takes you down skiing in a hurry. So you saw someone out on the water flying across the surface of the water and getting huge air, and now you’re wondering, “What was that thing they were riding on?!” Well, it was a hydrofoil, and Sky Ski is at the top of the hydrofoil game. The best news is that you can too! Check out the FAQs below… Just click on a question to see the answer. If you have any questions that you think should be included in our FAQ, or questions that are not covered here, please use our contact form to submit your question. How does the hydrofoil work?

The hydrofoil works just like an airplane wing, except it works in the water instead of in the air. Because water is 600 times denser than air, the wing can be much smaller and still provide enough lift to fly a person out of the water at slow speeds. When you sit on the Sky Ski seat in the water, leaning back shifts your upper body weight behind the hydrofoil, causing the hydrofoil to tip up and create a climbing effect. That lifts you above the water. Leaning forward puts more weight in front of the hydrofoil, creating a diving effect and bringing you back to the water’s surface. The board’s rocker keeps the tip of the board well off the water even when riding on the water surface, so you don’t have to worry about crazy faceplants!

New to Sky Ski?

How old do you have to be to sky ski?

People of all ages can ski the Sky Ski. The only limitation really is whether your feet can reach the bindings when sitting on the seat. In order to effectively steer the sky ski, the knees must be bent at about 60 degrees. The standard sky skis are good for people about 5ft 4″ to 6ft 4″ tall. For those outside of this size range, we offer adjustable bindings, a feature that allows you to move the binding closer or farther from the seatmast to accommodate a wider range of heights. For riders smaller than 4ft we also offer a junior model and this model can be fitted with adjustable bindings too!

how fast do you have to go

In the early stages, the average tall rider (175 lbs) will learn to ride at around 14-15 mph. Heavier riders learn a little faster, around 16 mph, while lighter riders learn at around 12-13 mph.

What if you fall?

One of the things that makes hydrofoiling so safe is the fact that you are strapped in and in the event of a fall you cannot be hit by any part of the ski or foil. And since the hydrofoil acts as a counterbalance, all you have to do when falling is relax and straighten up, lifting your head and shoulders out of the water. Usually this takes between 1 and 3 seconds. Once you’ve righted yourself, you’re automatically in the position you need to be in to restart!

How hard is it to learn?

Learning to hydrofoil is a very unique experience, unlike most other things you have ever done. Because of this, the initial phase may take an extra day or two to get the hang of it. After that, the learning curve is much easier and you will progress faster than in any other water sport.

How fast do I have to go to get BIG AIR like I see the pros do?

The first rule of thumb here is that speed is NOT the key, get your technique right first! Although you can accelerate to get big air, things happen very quickly at speeds over 22 mph. So save yourself a few falls once you master riding the foil at 18-20 mph, keep the speed under 22 mph and practice all the jumps and tricks until you fully master them, 100%. With the right technique, a 175lb rider can easily and successfully jump or flip over 10ft in the air at just 22mph!!

Is foilboarding harder than wakeboarding?

No, it’s even easier because it takes less pull and less speed to the foilboard.

How do you start your ride?

Just like with a deep water start on a wakeboard or water ski, you start with the foilboard in the water. You start belly up and let the boat pull you vertically. Please see the instruction video for a walkthrough.

Why do you use snowboard boots & bindings?

For safety reasons, it is very important that you are not separated from the board in the event of a fall. As long as you are connected to the top of the board, the bottom (with the foil) can never hit you!

Can you foilboard behind a jet boat?

Yes absolutely! While the pull up on a foilboard is roughly the same as a wakeboard, on a foilboard there is significantly less drag once you are on top as the foil flies the board and rider above the water surface.
