Dilip Piramal wants to focus on the domestic market and open up new categories

VIP Industries, India’s largest luggage maker, appointed its founder Dilip Piramal, 67, as chief executive in March after his daughter Radhika, who is now vice president and chief executive officer, decided to spend more time in the UK to oversee VIP’s operations conduct. VIP Industries operating profit for the 2017 financial year was £1,275m, up 5% year-on-year, while consolidated profit rose over 26% year-on-year to £83.9m. Piramal speaks to Forbes India about the brand and its strategy for the future. Excerpts:

Q. There have been many new branding initiatives across multiple brands of VIP. Is your strategy working well?

Many of our initiatives in recent years are bearing fruit. Our biggest success was Skybags. It was launched in 2011 for hypermarkets with a high volume, low margin strategy. Our advertising campaigns also worked well, led by brand ambassadors such as actors John Abraham and Varun Dhawan. Skybags has become as big a brand in terms of popularity as the flagship VIP brand. [It contributed 28 percent of sales in fiscal 2017]. We focus on promotion to further promote Skybags. Our advertising budget is around 6 percent of sales.

Q. How would you describe the current business environment for VIP Industries?

Our brands have developed well over the past year. But we got a big jolt with the introduction of the GST rate of 28 percent compared to the 18-19 percent taxes we used to pay. This happened because luggage is seen as a durable consumer good. But the increase is very steep, so we have to increase the prices for our main brands by 10-12 percent if we want to keep the same margins.

Premium brands like VIP, Skybags and Carlton will be able to accept a price increase; We have already increased prices by 6-8 percent.

Q. What are your growth expectations now?

We’ll have to see how that develops and how customers react. Unlike other consumables like refrigerators and washing machines, which involve a mix of technologies and cannot be crafted by the unorganized sector, luggage can be crafted. I fear higher taxes will push manufacturers towards the disorganized and parallel sectors.

Q. You talked about reinventing the VIP brand…

Overall, there’s no problem with the flagship brand, but it does seem to be showing its age. We’re working on a strategy for that. We need to renovate it a bit. We don’t need newer technologies; Polycarbonate material and high-quality four-wheeled trolleys are trending and will remain so.

Q. What is your strategy to deal with the competition, especially Samsonite? It acquired US-based online retailer eBags.

I don’t want to talk about Samsonite’s strategies. It has Tumi, which is in a different area [luxury], while eBags is a distribution channel; it can’t particularly help Samsonite.

We are doing well in Digital Sales and it will continue to grow; Currently, only about 1 percent of our revenue comes from online channels. We do not see digital selling as a threat to our on-site retail presence. Digital selling is a threat to the retailer, not the manufacturer. This is where brand value comes in… Consumers are willing to pay 30-40 percent more for a branded product.

Q. Would you like to change the strategy for Aristocrat?

We had two new brand ambassadors, cricketers R Ashwin and Rohit Sharma, and that strategy worked. We need to take a call on Alpha and Aristocrat – both in the economy segment – and see if we need to merge them.

Q. Are there any acquisitions planned? How is the foreign market developing?

There are few options in the luggage compartment. The overseas market was quite tough. Europe has been in retreat since 2008. When it comes to luggage, the barriers to entry are high. Introducing a new product abroad will therefore be very expensive. Focusing on the Indian domestic market instead is a better strategy, and for growth we should explore new categories. But for the next 12 months we can focus on the luggage and handbag segments. Our strength is branding and retail distribution.

From a manufacturing perspective, our wholly owned subsidiary in Bangladesh, VIP Bangladesh had a good Q4FY17. Pre-tax profit was approximately £3.5m for the quarter and approximately £9m for the full year.

Q. Is India in a safe place macro-economically?

Today all the problems of socialism have crept into the economy and state-owned enterprises. The reform process that began in the 1990s was badly needed. Corruption remains a massive problem that needs to be addressed. But this government has done the right policy and is transparent. It has set specific targets related to the distribution of gas and electricity to the rural poor. Even in a democracy we need strict decisions and actions.

How big is the chance?

The total luggage market in India is estimated at around Rs. 7,000-8,000, according to market estimates, with organized players controlling 40 percent.
