Whiskey is a dark grain alcohol produced around the world. It was first developed in medieval Scotland and Ireland. In Gaelic, his name loosely translated means “water of life”.

In 16th-century Scotland, pharmacists sold whiskey as a tonic to slow aging, cure constipation and relieve joint pain. During American Prohibition, doctors prescribed whiskey to treat pneumonia, high blood pressure and tuberculosis.

Today, whiskey comes under a variety of names depending on how it’s made – such as single malt, scotch, bourbon and rye. While it’s more likely to be listed on a bar than on a recipe pad these days, modern research has found evidence that may support some traditional claims that whiskey is good for health.

However, it is well documented that high levels of alcohol can lead to serious health problems. The potential benefits of whiskey are related to its low to moderate consumption.

Johnnie Walker is a Scotch whiskey that was developed in the early 19th century. Today it is the best-selling brand of Scotch, a spirit with a relatively high number of producers due to its age and established popularity.

As the name suggests, all Scotch whiskeys are made in Scotland. They must abide by a complex web of guidelines to earn the “Scotch” name and fall into one of five categories based on the ingredients they’re made from, but for the most part, that’s how you can usually characterize them be malt or grain.

How Johnnie Walker is made

While Johnnie Walker produces a wide range of whiskeys, they are a blend of grain and malt. The grain consists mainly of barley, but the rules also allow the fermentation of other grains to make the liquor, such as rye or wheat. Malt, a mysterious word often heard in the Scottish world, simply means barley dried using a process known as ‘malting’.

While Johnnie Walker has always been popular, it has recently lost some ground to other brands. To counteract this, the brand has started making some significant moves in marketing. In 2018 they released a Jane Walker special edition and plan to release another one later in the year after the final season of Game of Thrones.

Johnnie Walker whiskey prices

The definition of Scotch is strictly controlled by laws in the country, which means it has to meet certain requirements that drive up the price.

One of the most important requirements to bear the Scotch name is that whiskey must be aged in oak casks for three or more years. This means you don’t get a budget option like with vodka. The cheapest Scotch whiskey costs over $20.00 for a 750ml bottle.

As for price, the longer something sits in the cask the better it will taste, which means these companies can charge a hefty premium for aged whiskey. Johnnie Walker has a wide range of prices, with older whiskeys costing more.

Here is the list of average prices for the company’s spirits:

Type Size Price Proof Red Label Blended Scotch Whiskey 750ml $22.99 – $24.99 80 Black Label Blended Scotch Whiskey 750ml $29.99 – $32.99 80 Double Black Blended Scotch Whiskey 750ml $41.99 – $44.99 80 Green Label 750ml $59.99 – $69.99 86 Gold Label Reserve $7.99 Blended Scotch Whiskey 7 $89.99 80 Platinum Aged 18 Years 750ml $189.99 – 209, $99 80 Blue Label Blended Scotch Whiskey 750ml $150.00 – $180.99 80

Let’s go through some of the offers in different price ranges:

Johnnie Walker Red

The “Red Label”, as it is commonly known, is the basic version of Scotch. The brand names its different flavors by colors that match those on the bottle label.

The drink itself is a honey-colored blend of grain and malt whiskeys from different distilleries. It’s a good blender as the flavor isn’t as smooth as the other brands.

At around $23.00 for 750ml, it’s the cheapest option on this list. This is about the same price as a serious Irish whiskey like Jameson, but it’s more expensive than base models for other Scotch brands, such as the nude Ballantine’s Finest, which you can find in some places for around $20.00.

Johnnie Walker Green Label

The Green Label is the next big step up in terms of price, quality and taste. This will usually cost you around $60.00 for the 750ml bottle, which doubles the price of the red version.

This variant is a blend that is guaranteed to consist of 15-year-old whiskeys. In comparison, the Red Label typically uses casks of the drink that are between 3 and 10 years old.

With the assumption that longer aged whiskey tastes better, we can compare this brand to other 15 year olds. Dalwhinnie 15 Year Old Whiskey is a competitor that is on average around $15.00 cheaper for the same quantity. Glenfiddich 15 is a more direct alternative as the average price is about the same or slightly higher than Johnnie Walker’s Green.

Johnnie Walker Blue Label

The Blue Label is the most expensive product under the Johnnie Walker name.

As with all whiskeys from this brand, it is a blend of several different whiskeys of different ages and from different distilleries. The packaging makes no mention of age here, as it can cost upwards of $200.00, the sometimes-made claim that the spirits have been in the casks for up to 40 years is credible.

Common Recipes: What to Mix with Johnnie Walker

Frequent drinkers of Scotch will often claim that the best way to enjoy the drink is to simply sip it in a glass with no more than a few ice cubes. Nevertheless, many cocktails were invented for Johnnie Walker, especially recommended for drinking with the relatively cheaper Red Label.

The rusty nail

This drink is for lovers of Scotch flavors, including Scotch whiskey itself and Drambuie, a strong liqueur made from Scotch that still retains 40% alcohol. To make it, mix the following into an old fashioned glass with lots of ice –

2 parts Scotch whiskey

½ part Drambuie

The blood and the sand

This cocktail combines the taste of Scotch with that of fruit from orange juice. Experts recommend squeezing the juice from the oranges yourself rather than using the store-bought stuff and using a smooth whiskey that doesn’t smoke, but it’s all a matter of personal taste. Combine the following in a cocktail glass:

.75 ounces of scotch

0.75 ounces of sweet vermouth

0.75 ounces orange juice

0.75 ounces fruit liqueur

The Godfather

Similar to the Rusty Nail, The Godfather is a simple combination of scotch, liqueur and ice in one glass. This is a testament to people’s universal love for the taste of Scotch, without too much to add. In an Old Fashioned glass with a generous amount of ice, combine the following ingredients:

2 parts Scotch whiskey

1 part Amaretto liqueur

Blended vs Single Scotch

Scotch whiskey can be blended or single. ‘Blended’ means it’s made from whiskeys from different distilleries combined, while ‘single’ means it’s from a single distillery.

Single malts are said to be superior to blends, but in reality there is little difference. A blend is said to have a “smoother” flavor because different liquids are combined to create it, while a single can have a stronger, sometimes described as “spicier” flavor.

Because of this, individual scotches are usually more expensive. Although Johnnie Walker is a blended whisky, it has certain options that could be even more expensive than singles – namely the blue label.

1. Malting 01/05 In the beginning there is the grain: barley or grain. These are high in starch, but to make alcohol they must be converted to soluble sugars. This happens naturally as the grain germinates, so hot water is added and the mixture heated until it thinks it’s time to grow. That’s called malting.

2. Drying 02/05 When it is good and ready, the grain is dried in a kiln. Peat is sometimes added at this stage, aiding the drying process and imparting a smoky flavor to the finished whiskey. The dried grain is then ground in a mill, ready for the next step.

3. Fermentation 03/05 Next it’s time to pull out those essential sugars by mixing the dried grain with hot water. A hot, sweet liquid is formed, which is separated and cooled. It is then ready to add the yeast and start fermentation. This creates a kind of beer.

4. Distilling 04/05 Now it’s all about the liquid. The beer is distilled twice to increase the alcohol content and make the taste more intense. To do this, it is boiled in a large copper vessel called a still. The more the liquid touches the side of the still, the greater the impact on flavor.

Scottish whiskey

Johnnie Walker is a Scotch whiskey brand now owned by Diageo and originated in the Scottish town of Kilmarnock in East Ayrshire. The brand was first founded by grocer John Walker. It is the world’s most widely distributed brand of blended Scotch whiskey, sold in almost every country, with annual sales equivalent to over 223.7 million 700ml bottles in 2016 (156.6 million litres).[1]

history [edit]

Johnnie Walker was founded in Kilmarnock and continued to be produced and bottled there until 2012

John Walker was born on July 25, 1805. His farming father died in 1819 and the family sold the farm. Her trustees invested the proceeds, £417, in an Italian warehouse, grocery and wine and liquor store on the High Street in Kilmarnock, Ayrshire, Scotland. Walker ran the food, wine and spirits segment as a teenager in 1820. The Excise Act 1823 relaxed the strict laws governing the distillation of whiskey and reduced the extremely high taxes on the distillation and sale of whiskey by a considerable amount ] In 1825 Walker, a teetotaler, sold spirits including rum, brandy, gin and whisky. [3]

Shortly thereafter he switched to dealing mainly in whiskey. As the blending of grain whiskeys with malt whiskeys was still forbidden, he sold both blended malt whiskeys and grain whiskeys.[4] They were sold as made-to-order whiskeys, blended to specific customer requirements as he didn’t have his own brand.[5] Years later he began using his name on labels and sold a blended malt as Walker’s Kilmarnock Whisky. John Walker died in 1857.[3]

The brand became popular, but after Walker’s death it was his son Alexander “Alec” Walker and grandson Alexander Walker II who were instrumental in establishing the whiskey as the brand of choice. The Spirits Act of 1860 legalized the blending of grain whiskeys with malt whiskeys and ushered in the modern era of blended Scotch whisky.[6][3] Blended Scotch Whisky, lighter and sweeter in character, was more accessible and much more marketable to a wider audience. Edinburgh’s Andrew Usher was the first to create a blended whisky, but the Walkers followed in due course.[7]

Alexander Walker had introduced the brand’s signature square bottle in 1860. This meant more bottles could fit in the same space and fewer broken bottles. The other distinguishing feature of the Johnnie Walker bottle was – and still is – the label, which as of this year is placed at an angle of 24 degrees from left to right upwards, allowing the text to be made larger and more visible.[ 8th] [3] This also allowed consumers to identify it remotely.[4] A major factor for him was the arrival at Kilmarnock of a railway that carried goods to merchant ships traveling around the world. Thanks to Alec’s business acumen, Walker’s Kilmarnock sales were reaching 100,000 gallons (450,000 liters) a year by 1862.[3]

In 1865 Alec created Johnnie Walker’s first commercial blend and named it Old Highland Whisky before registering it as such in 1867.[3][9]

Under John Walker, whiskey sales accounted for eight percent of the company’s income; by the time Alexander was ready to pass the company on to his own sons, that number had risen to 90 to 95 percent.[10][11]

In 1893 the Cardhu Distillery was purchased by the Walkers to strengthen holdings of one of the most important malt whiskeys, the Johnnie Walker Blends.[3] This move took the Cardhu single malt off the market and made it the exclusive domain of the Walkers.[12] Cardhu’s production would become the heart of Old Highland Whiskey and, after the 1909 renaming, the finest single malt in the Johnnie Walker Red and Black Labels.[4]

From 1906 to 1909, John’s grandsons George and Alexander II expanded the line and launched three blended whiskeys, Old Highland aged 5 years, Special Old Highland aged 9 years and Extra Special Old Highland aged 12 years. These three brands had Johnnie Walker’s standard labels, the only difference being their colours: white, red and black respectively. They were often identified in public by the colors of their labels.[4] In 1909, as part of a rebranding that introduced the Striding Man, a mascot still in use today, created by cartoonist Tom Browne, [13] the company rebranded its blends to match common color names. The Old Highland was renamed the Johnnie Walker White Label and aged 6 years, the Special Old Highland became the Johnnie Walker Red Label at 10 years, and the Extra Special Old Highland was renamed the Johnnie Walker Black Label and remained 12 years old.[3]

Seeing an opportunity to expand the scope and diversity of their brands, Walker acquired an interest in Coleburn Distillery in 1915, followed by Clynelish Distillery Co. and Dailuaine-Talisker Co. in 1916.[3] This ensured a constant supply of single malt whiskey from the Cardhu, Coleburn, Clynelish, Talisker and Dailuaine distilleries.[15] In 1923, Walker bought the Mortlach distillery to further their strategy.[16] Most of their production was used in Johnnie Walker blends, the burgeoning popularity of which necessitated larger and larger quantities of single malts.

Johnnie Walker White was deposed in World War I.[17] In 1932 Alexander II added Johnnie Walker Swing to the line, the name comes from the unusual shape of the bottle which allowed it to rock back and forth.

The company joined the Distillers Company in 1925. Distillers Company was acquired by Guinness in 1986, and Guinness merged with Grand Metropolitan to form Diageo in 1997. That year saw the introduction of the blended malt Johnnie Walker Pure Malt, renamed Johnnie Walker Green Label in 2004.[18]

In July 2009, the brand’s current owner, Diageo, decided to close all operations in Kilmarnock by 2012. This was met with backlash from local people, local politicians and then First Minister of Scotland Alex Salmond. Despite petitions, public campaigning and a full-scale march around Kilmarnock, Diageo proceeded with the closure.[19][20] Johnnie Walker’s Kilmarnock factory closed in March 2012 and the buildings were demolished a year later.[21]

In July 2020, Johnnie Walker announced plans to launch a new eco-friendly paper bottle, due for launch in early 2021.[22]

In October 2021, Johnnie Walker announced a new label, Jane Walker, created by the distillery’s first female master blender.[23][24][25]

marketing [edit]

The Walkers created their primary marketing strategy in 1908 with advertisements featuring Browne’s Striding Man under the slogan “Johnnie Walker: Born 1820, still going strong”.
