First you need to open the ceiling rosette by turning it around the perimeter. It is divided into ceiling rose cap and ceiling rose base. The cap part has a hole in the center to route the output wires.

2. Turn off the power and isolate the power

You will be working on exposed wiring, so shutting down and isolating power is imperative. When wiring your ceiling rose, make sure no household appliances are in use and make sure no one turns the power back on without your knowledge.

When these checks are complete, turn off all switches on your consumer unit or fuse box. The auxiliary circuits are supplied with electrical energy here.

Then use a voltage tester to verify that the current is isolated. The devices will normally illuminate (e.g. red flash and/or beep) when the circuit is still live.

3. Remove the existing light bulb and ceiling rose

Remove both the existing light bulb and fixture and don’t worry if the wires are left exposed from your ceiling.

The following steps will show you how to successfully start wiring your ceiling canopy.

4. Set your household tester correctly

You’ll need a household meter to determine which of the exposed wires is the switched live wire – the wire that ensures your light is both turned on and off via a switch.

Before you test your cables, you need to make sure your household tester is set to ohms and the beep test mode. If the switched live wire with the red and black alligator clips (or probes) attached is successfully found, the meter will beep.

5. Locate the switched live wire

You then need to find the switched live wire. Ceiling rose wiring consists of three sets of red (or brown) and black (or blue) wires housed in three cords and exposed from your ceiling.

Make sure the household meter is set to beep, and attach the red and black alligator clips (or probes) to each set of red (or brown) and black (or blue) wires. Then move the light switch each time to see if there is a beep, which means you have successfully found the switched live wire.

6. Mark the switched live wire

At this point you will need to mark the switched live wire (the black or blue wire in the kit) so you can screw it into the correct terminal block on your ceiling rose. Either wrap electrical tape or tube around the wire to positively identify it.

7. Screw all wires into the correct terminal blocks

Next, use a screwdriver to screw all of the wires into the correct terminal blocks.

This involves screwing the two neutral wires (black or blue wires) into the neutral block (left block), the three live wires (red or brown wires) into the live block (middle block), and the switched live wire (marked black or blue wire) into the switch block (right block).

There should be two remaining screw compartments that will house the two wires from your lamp socket.

8. Attach your lamp holder and lightbulb

From here you must first assemble your new lamp holder by screwing the neutral wire into the last remaining neutral screw compartment and the live wire into the last remaining live screw compartment. Next you can mount your lightbulb.

9. Turn on the device

Turn the power back on to complete the process – you have successfully wired your canopy light!

It really is an easy DIY installation job and anyone can do it!

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

PREPARATION

As with all these jobs, preparation is key to success, so make sure everything is correct before you begin the installation.

The first task is to insulate the luminaire, this is best left to the professionals. Have an electrician do this for you. Once this is done you can drill a hole through the center of the rosette for the wiring to go through.

The next part depends on the ceiling surface you are dealing with. If the ceiling is painted or otherwise decorated, you need to deal with that before you can begin installation. Of course with a wallpaper you will need to remove it from the area where the rosette will be attached, with a painted ceiling you can scrape the paint off with your sandpaper to give the glue a better grip.

INSTALLATION

That starts with the glue. Mix up enough glue for the application according to the instructions and then apply it to the back of the rose with the glue spreader. You should not overdo the glue, otherwise it will spread around the edges of the rose and look unsightly. Use the spreader to spread clean beads of glue across the entire surface.

Once the glue is applied you can attach the rosette by positioning it in the correct position, making sure it is centered on the fixture and pressing firmly for a few minutes to allow the glue to set. To fix it until the glue is completely dry there are a couple of ways, you can use a couple of pieces of wood to support it off the ground (in this case remember to put a soft cloth or other cushioning material between the support and the rosette to prevent damage), or you can use two or three screws and screw them to the joists above to hold them in place. Either way, once the glue has fully set you can wipe away any excess glue with a damp sponge and remove the rose for any decoration you wish to add.

It really is. Victorian house so the rose and bay are lovely. The ceiling is currently painted a deep apricot, which is foul; but forms a contrast to the plaster. I’m worried that if I paint it white everything will look a bit the same… very high ceiling so it’s going to be a real pain in the ass and I don’t want to do it twice if it doesn’t look right. What do you have?

In typical wiring common in UK homes, light fittings would normally use single loop ceiling roses which incorporate the functionality of a junction box (above the plaster the electrical cord would split in two but that is irrelevant!).

In this example on the right you can see a “Steampunk” decal and it illustrates how the building beams and top floorboards are exposed. There is no plaster. The electrical cables and the junction box for the ceiling canopy are sheathed, but are still exposed as a pipeline.

You’ll also find this style for radiator plumbing and plumbing when the pipes are on the outside and not hidden. This is typical of steampunk and you will see this style in both modern and older Victorian buildings.

How bright can I use a lightbulb with your lights?

We recommend using LED bulbs as not only are they the most energy efficient currently on the market, they also do not emit heat making them ideal for use with glass and fabric shades.

In general, we recommend that the maximum power of your bulb should not exceed 12W LED (equivalent to a 100W incandescent bulb).

Most small bayonet (SBC, B15) or screw-on (E14) LED bulbs found in retail outlets are around 4-5W (equivalent to 40-50W old style), although it may be possible to get brighter ones in found in specialty stores or online.

Similarly, most standard bayonet (BC, B22) or E27 screw type LED bulbs are around 6-7W (equivalent to 60-70W old style) on the high street, although it is becoming progressively easier to get 10- Find 12W LED bulbs (100W old style).

We advise against using halogen bulbs as they generate a lot of heat which will burn them out and can damage our blinds, especially our fabric bulbs which can burn.
