I also looked at several reviews of GE washers and dryers. Here is a summary of what I learned:

According to appliance service professionals I interviewed and thousands of consumer reviews, Samsung and LG are the least reliable brands of washers and dryers.

Samsung

Samsung is a South Korean company that has been operating since 1938. The brand’s 30 washing machine models and over 50 dryer models are just part of its wide range of appliances and electronics.

Despite Yale’s reported low service rate of 4.9% (washing machines), eight of the 16 appliance repair companies said they would stay away from Samsung (only one recommended it). The common theme is that it’s hard to get parts for Samsung devices when they break.

In addition, Samsung washers and dryers do not get good reviews on consumer review sites. The brand has received a rating of 1.2 out of 5 stars from Consumer Affairs.

The previous model we tested, the WAN28201GB (read our full review), sailed through Expert Reviews’ tests and won itself the coveted five stars and a Best Buy award for price and efficiency. Our testers were blown away by the good performance, especially on the 40°C and 60°C cycles. In fact, it performed better than some machines that cost twice as much.

If you’re wondering why there are so many Bosch models on this list, the simple answer is that they’re actually pretty good. The Series 6 WAU28PH9GB is the latest mid-ranger from Bosch and picks up where our previous favourite, the Series 6 WAT286H0GB (read our full review) left off. Just like we found with its predecessor, we doubt it will offer dramatic improvements in wash performance over its cheaper Series 4 cousin above, but it outperforms it in other areas.

It has a washing capacity of 9 kg combined with the ingenious i-Dos function and Wi-Fi remote control. Fill the i-Dos’ tanks with liquid detergent and fabric softener and it can handle about 15 full loads before you need to refill it. Combined with the remote control functions, you can throw the laundry in the washing machine and set the washing program wherever you are, whether you are at home or away from home.

Another big plus is the smoothness. The previous Series 6 model was significantly quieter than the Series 4 model above, so it shouldn’t be noticeable during its spin cycle. AEG makes big claims about the L9FEC966R using various Scandinavian-sounding marketing buzzwords, but the bottom line is that it’s just really good at what it does. There’s no frills like Wi-Fi, but instead you get a stylish-looking machine that delivers a largely brilliant wash performance while using less energy than even Bosch’s top-line Series 8 machine. Even the 20-minute, 3kg quick wash is unusually competent, with stain-busting performance that lets its competitors down.

If we had to pick holes, we’d groan that the stain-fighting ability of the 40C wash could be better. But given the excellent results of 30℃, 60℃ and quick wash tests, we are not inclined to make a big deal out of it.
