On the other hand, attempts to overcome the disadvantage of high cost by using soap with higher water content have not yielded positive results. In fact, when used, these soaps produced copious amounts of scabbing while at the same time experiencing a loss of strength.
Various types of additives, drying materials and fillers have been tried in an attempt to overcome these disadvantages. One of these materials is starch, which is known as a filler. The addition of starch made in the earlier techniques was done in such a way as to prevent the formation of gels and dextrins because of possible difficulties in the manufacture and finishing of the product.
It has now surprisingly been found that a soap containing a hard and elastic gel is composed of:
starch, 8 to 28% by weight,
water, 10 to 60% by weight,

The subject of the present invention is therefore a soap bar comprising a hard and elastic gel consisting of:
starch, 8 to 28% by weight,
Sodium and/or potassium salts of higher fatty acids, 24 to 54% by weight,
water, 10 to 50% by weight.
The very large variability in the percentages of the three components depends on the ability of the starch to hold water in small or large quantities and due to the fact that the starch-water gel can be modified by adding sodium or potassium soaps within the above can be limited, resulting in a hard and elastic gel.
It is evident that the properties of the final gel (hardness, elasticity, detergency, skin action, foaming power, etc.) vary, albeit not linearly, with the relative amounts of the above three components and with the Na+soap/K+soap ratio .

Finally, another subject of the present invention is a process for preparing the soap bar described above, comprising the following operations:
(a) mixing starch, water, sodium and potassium salts of the higher fatty acids to obtain a liquid suspension;
(b) heating and mixing the mixture (a) at a temperature between 60 and 100°C to obtain, after gelatinization of the starch, a semi-liquid paste with a water content between 48 and 52% by weight;
(c) further heating the paste (b) to a temperature ranging from 90°C to 160°C to obtain, after a second gelatinization stage, a denser paste with a gel structure having a higher strength than the paste of phase (b ), the water content now being between 45 and 49% by weight.
The disadvantages of conventional bar soaps, as described above, are overcome by the bar soaps which are the subject of this invention. These new soaps are capable of a very efficient washing performance and, due to their high starch content, do not show any harmful effects on the skin due to the alkaline effect. On the contrary, they have a beneficial dermatological effect precisely because of the well-known beneficial effect of starch on the skin.

Corn starch is preferably used as the starch, without this preference restricting the possible use of other types of starch.
The soap preferably used is coconut oil soap, which can be replaced by any other type of soap, for example, palm kernel oil soap. Below are the average compositions (in % by weight) of coconut oil and palm kernel oil:

The higher the amount of K+ soap, the lower the strength of the product, the more difficult it is to handle and process, the higher the amount of foam and its rapidity of formation.
In addition to additives, auxiliaries can also be used to improve product properties or better adapt them to market requirements.
For example, sodium carboxymethyl cellulose, polyvinyl alcohols with any degree of substitution (PVA), resin, formalin or proteins can be added. Other materials, types and amounts of use in the formula are well known to soap experts. These materials can be used in the proportions:

The composition of the soap at the end of the entire manufacturing process is as follows:

The formalin used is a preservative which can be substituted with others known and normally used in the manufacture of conventional soaps.
Composition 2 can be dried to obtain a soap containing up to 10% moisture, increasing all other components proportionately. This drier product differs from Composition 2 because of its greater hardness, slower consumption rate, easier finishing and packaging, higher softening point.

To explain the production process, composition 1 is taken as an example and processed into composition 2.
The manufacturing process begins in a stirred kettle, where the following materials are added in order:
Water;
Wet soap obtained through the normal soap making process;
boric acid solution.
The mixture is heated to a temperature in the range from 60 to 95°C and the pH is adjusted to a value of 9 with hydrochloric acid and/or citric acid. Sodium citrate, melted or powdered stearin, starch and formalin solution are added in order. The first stage of gelatinization is almost immediate; The liquid suspension turns into a non-dense paste in a few minutes. This step, carried out for about 10 minutes with constant stirring, results in a paste that will become denser over time. After a maximum of 30 minutes, the paste no longer increases in strength.
At this point in the manufacturing process, the water content is around 50%. The paste is heated to 100-150°C by, for example, milling in a heated roll mill for a time between 10 and 30 minutes. It is the heating that is important, not the physical action of grinding the soap. Here a second gelatinization phase takes place, resulting in a paste much denser and firmer than that obtained after the first heat treatment.
The paste is now smooth and manageable. The water content is about 47%.
EXAMPLE 3

The paste obtained in the previous example is transferred to a mixer with a double blade stirrer (approx. 40 rpm) and cooled to 40 to 60.degree. At this temperature the perfume is added. Immediately after adding the perfume, the paste significantly loses strength and becomes very soft and sticky. Constant stirring of the mass is continued and after about 5 minutes the paste returns to its former state of non-tacky consistency. The paste is now in a condition to be extruded, pressed and packaged like regular soap. Its water content is around 46% and it is ready for packaging.
The softening point of the product is between 45 and 50 °C at 46% humidity. However, this negative quality can be improved by reducing the water content of the product, which can be done in a regular soap dryer before adding perfume. In order to increase the softening point, the level of sodium chloride and/or sodium citrate can be increased while keeping it within the necessary limits to prevent “whitewashing” of the finished soap, ie migration of mineral salts from within the soap the surface.

Aging and packaging of the product
The third phase of gelatinization takes place during the aging of the product: the hardness and elasticity of the product increase following an asymptotic curve that reaches the almost flat part after 48 hours of aging. At this stage the gel has reached its final structure. The soap cake is now a firm mass with a smooth surface, pleasant to the touch, elastic. It softens when heated above 50°C, but returns to its previous state when aged at lower temperatures.
The manufacturing process, machinery and equipment described above can be modified by an expert in these techniques to improve the efficiency of the process. However, in order to obtain the product described above, it is essential that, after the first gelatinization phase, the liquid mixture and the paste are heated homogeneously in order to complete the gelatinization of the starch. Mechanical processing of the paste is necessary for even heat distribution but has little or no effect on the gel structure. On the contrary, excessive mechanical processing of the paste in the rolling mills can damage the structure of the starch-water gel due to the “shear” effect.
The product should be packed in a waterproof film to avoid high moisture loss. The packaged soap should be stored in a hard case to allow storage in places and warehouses where the room temperature may be high.
The quality of the product thus obtained is remarkably superior to that of a conventional toilet soap. This superior quality derives both from the particular physico-chemical structure of the product and from the intrinsic properties of the materials used. In fact, consumer tests have clearly proven that this product is superior to traditional soaps in terms of skin impact, amount and type of lather, rinsing, wet and dry feel. Its superiority is also demonstrated by its ability not to create any deposits in the soap dish despite the very high water content. It has also been found that some of the consumers who are allergic to conventional soaps have used this product with no ill effects. After all, the production costs are significantly lower than for normal soaps.
How do you fix seized soap?
If it is a heavy seize and you can’t save it, you’ve got three options! Hot Process it – Dump it into a crockpot and hot process it. If it goes beyond the point of being able to stir it smooth and pour into a mold, you can hot process it.

Why does it come to a soap soap?
Something speeds up the saponification process. It is usually a fragrance oil or essential oil.
For fragrance oils, look for flowers and spices, and for essential oils, look for spices (cloves, bay leaves, cinnamon, etc.). Some fragrances are labeled “may cause acceleration”. These are scents that, combined with some factors, tend to get stuck.
Temperatures – Temperatures play a large role in the movement of your soap to and through saponification. Cooler temperatures will cause your soap to move more slowly; Higher temperatures will cause your soap to move faster. Higher temperatures in combination with a fragrance oil or essential oil known to work quickly = soapy water! Soap cooler (75-85 degrees F) when working with fast moving fragrances and essential oils.
Watch out for other additives that can cause your soap to heat up like oatmeal, honey, beer, etc.
Water Amount – Reduced water combined with a difficult EO or FO can cause your soap to set. If you’re using a water discount when lathering, make sure you’re not using a tricky EO or FO.
Blending – Using an immersion blender can help speed up tricky EOs and FOs. Stir by hand or mix with a whisk.
Add your fragrance or essence to your melted oils BEFORE adding the lye solution. Sometimes diluting the FO or EO helps slow it down.
What can you do?
You can prevent this by paying attention to the temperature and the amount of water. Soap up cool and don’t go without your water. If you’re using a new fragrance or essential oil and don’t know how it will affect your soap, do a 1 pound test batch first. If it happens, don’t panic!
If there is a slight sticking where exactly where you got stuck with the hand blender at the bottom of the pot, break off with the hand blender and stir to trace by hand.
If it’s a serious seizure and you can’t save it, you have three options!
Hot Process it – Put it in a crockpot and process it hot. If it’s past the point where it can be stirred smoothly and poured into a mold, you can work it hot. Just put it in a saucepan and cook until the entire mass has gelled (become translucent), and then put it in a mold.
Repeat – If you managed to get it into a shape but it’s UGLY, you can stack it again. Here are rebatch instructions. If you do it the day after, you usually don’t need to add extra water. If you’re making it again weeks later, feel free to add some water to the cutlets before cooking.
Chunk it – You can let your soap sit until it’s set. Cut it into small pieces. Make a new batch of soap and add the bars to the new batch. That’s how I came up with some really nice designs. Here’s a soap that Benjamin and I had to chop up to fix. I love the way it looks!
If you’re in the soap making business, chances are you’ve had a soap spree. If you are new to soap making, one day it will happen! Keep calm and know there is a way to fix it! It may not turn out the way you imagined, but you will end up with a unique soap with a unique story.

Why is my soap not melting?
Stir the soap every few minutes.
However, stirring too frequently or too hard could cause bubbles. The best thing to do is just stir the soap every couple of minutes or so. If the soap shreds or pieces are not melting into each other, add 1 additional tablespoon of water at a time, up to 3 teaspoons.

What is the difference between dish soap and dish detergent?
While dishwasher detergent is a soap, it doesn’t work the same as other types of soap. Dishwashing detergent is designed to clean with a thick foam of suds. Instead of suds, dishwasher detergent relies on enzymes to eat away at the mess.

A: That’s a really good question that a lot of people ask themselves when they run out of the handy dishwasher capsules we use so often. Years ago it was common to use a liquid dishwasher soap solution in a dishwasher, although these days most people are turning to capsules. It might make sense that a liquid dish soap could play the same role, but it’s not as cut and dry.

When you put dish soap or a capsule in the funnel of your dishwasher, it will dissolve in the water. As the water sloshes and splashes around in the dishwasher, the enzymes in the detergent attach themselves to stains, dirt and residue. They break down the long protein and starch chains into smaller and smaller particles until they can be washed away with the water.

What happens when you use regular liquid dishwashing detergent in a dishwasher?
Unlike dish soap, dish soap is designed to create a thick, sudsy foam that helps break down food and stains on pots, plates, cups, and bowls. It works very differently than dishwashing detergent. Although both come in liquid form, they’re not apples for apples.

If you use the same amount of detergent as dishwashing liquid in a dishwasher, you should be prepared for a mess. The detergent creates a thick foam of soapy water and bubbles in the dishwasher, which eventually leaks through the door and drains into the sink. That might be funny in movies, but it’s not so funny when it’s your flooring and drywall that could get damaged.
If you put regular washing-up liquid in a dishwasher, stop the cycle immediately and rinse the appliance thoroughly.
Things happen and we can sometimes get so busy with daily life that we make the mistake of putting dish soap in the dishwasher. The first step is to stay calm and the second step is to flush the soap out of the system.
If you accidentally put detergent in a dishwasher, stop the washing machine immediately. When things have calmed down a bit, put the washing machine in rinse mode to get rid of the suds as quickly as possible. This could still result in overflowing sinks and suds on the floor, so you might have to stop and restart the rinse cycle a few times in the name of damage control.
Once the suds are gone, you should run the dishwasher at least one more time to remove the soap residue inside. You might also want to clean the dishwasher afterwards.

Realistically, you wouldn’t want to put these in the dishwasher anyway, as these soaps aren’t food safe. But understand that any type of foam soap makes a big, sudsy mess and can even damage your dishwasher. If you must use household soap other than dish soap, a much better option is to fill your dishwasher’s soap container 3/4 full with baking soda and add just a few drops of dish soap.

How to make homemade dishwashing liquid in no time.
While you really should only use dish soap (otherwise you could damage your machine and void your warranty), there are some homemade solutions that will result in clean dishes in your dishwasher.
This recipe is a dry mix, so it’s best kept in a large jar or bag for easy scooping and pouring. All you need is:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda
1 cup kosher salt
Just mix these ingredients together. Pour the mixture into the detergent dispenser to use. If you prefer a bit of fragrance, you can use a drop or two of essential oils like lemon or orange, or any other scent that smells nice and clean. Add to the soap container before running the washer, not to the dry mix in the jar.

Make your DIY soap tougher
As a soap maker, I often hear the question, “How do you get your DIY soap bar so hard?” or “How can I make my soap last longer?”
The hardness of the soap depends on the formula used and the time it takes to harden. But there are a few things you can do to make your DIY soap tougher, which in turn will help it last longer.
How to get tougher, longer lasting homemade soap
If you’ve never made homemade soap bars before, you might want to check out my basic recipe and see how weight and volume measurements work when making cold process soap. You can also check out this article on lye if you’re a little hesitant about using it. After you’ve made a few batches, it’s time to start thinking about how to improve the process and get a harder, longer-lasting bar.
Here are five things that can lead to a harder bar:
1. Use a water reducer
You have to dissolve lye in water to turn oils into soap. The amount of water you use will affect the curing time and will also affect the outcome of the DIY bar’s hardness.
Too much water will cause the bars to become soft and take longer to set. They also lose a lot of weight during curing, potentially leaving you with a softer bar. If the recipe calls for 5.75 ounces of water, you can decrease it by about 10% or use about 5.25 ounces. This allows your bar to cure much harder.
2. Add some wax
A small amount of beeswax added to the melted oils will help harden your DIY soap bar. If you’re looking for a vegan alternative, you can also try soy wax, bay wax, or any other type of vegetable wax. You can also try kokum butter, which is one of the hardest butters known to man.
If using my basic recipe, about 3 ounces melted and added to the oils will do just fine. Don’t wait to add these to Trace; They just harden and don’t clump or disperse in the soap base at all.
3. Add sodium lactate
Sodium lactate is a clear liquid that comes from the natural fermentation of sugars found in things like sugar cane and sugar beets. Used at about a 1% level, or about four tablespoons (2.25 ounces) for this recipe, sodium lactate will significantly harden your DIY bar. This is especially recommended for custom molds with intricate designs, as they can sometimes be very difficult to demould.
4. Increase the olive oil
Oils in soaps have different properties. And some oils cannot be substituted for others because of a certain SAP value. Simply put, the SAP value is the amount of caustic it takes to turn that oil into soap. There’s a lot more to the numbering system, but all you really need to know is that the numbers have to be close together to swap them out.
Coconut oil has a very different SAP value than olive oil and should be left alone in the recommended amount. But olive oil comes very close to certain other oils in terms of SAP. So you could decrease the amount of “other oil” recommended in this recipe and increase the amount of olive oil. The DIY soap bar will still look the same, but the end result will be a tougher bar.
5. Add some salt
Like sodium lactate, salt helps harden soap into very hard bars. Add about ½ teaspoon per pound of oil to the recipe. This recipe has 14.25 ounces of oil, so between ¼ and ½ teaspoon of salt will do. Stir it well into the lye solution and make sure it is completely dissolved before adding the lye to the oils.
Be sure to use pure salt with no additives; Any additives may affect the outcome of the final bars.

Making most homemade dish soap doesn’t require a chemistry degree either, often only 3 or 4 ingredients are needed.

If you’re using a natural soap, you’ll get better results by applying the soap directly to your dishes rather than filling a sink with soapy water. Rinse your dishes, scrub clean with soap and rinse again.

Castile soap in bulk
Castile soap is what most zero-waste dish soap options are based on, but you can also just buy pure castile soap.
Traditionally olive oil based, the soap is biodegradable and non-toxic, making it the perfect natural ingredient.
Properly diluted, the soap is even suitable for use on the body.
Nowadays you can find different variations made from a variety of different vegetable oils like coconut or hemp oil.
You can find it in both solid soap form and liquid form.
For the liquid form, to keep the packaging small, we recommend buying a concentrated version in bulk, which you can then dilute with water as needed.
For dishwashing we recommend a dilution ratio of 1 part castile soap to 10 parts water.
Castile soap has an alkaline pH, so it will react with anything acidic, like vinegar and lemon. This reaction nullifies the cleaning properties of the soap and leaves a white film on your dishes.

Recipe for homemade dish soap
Homemade zero waste dish soap is easy to make and takes less than 5 minutes.
Our recipe uses natural ingredients that clean effectively while being good for the environment.
No harsh chemicals are used, so the dish soap is gentle on your skin too.

1/3 cup liquid castile soap (add more if you find the soap too weak)
1 – 2 tablespoons baking soda (for really stubborn stains, scrub with a little baking soda first)
1 1/2 cups hot water
A few drops of essential oil of your choice (optional)
If you don’t have liquid castile soap, you can substitute solid soap.
Any bar soap you have at home should work, but we recommend using one of the options above or looking for a traditional olive oil bar.
You’ll need to grate the soap (or blend it in a blender), so you’ll need to use some elbow grease.

Our homemade detergent is much cheaper than exorbitant prices in the supermarket.

The amounts given here are for guidance only. You’ll need to experiment with the recipe as the exact amounts you need will depend on the type of water in your area and how dirty your dishes get.
In general, the harder your water, the stronger you should make your detergent.
Adding more citric acid and using white vinegar as a rinse aid will help remove any cloudy residue. You can also try using hotter water or less detergent.

1 cup washing soda (for cleaning)

If you find the mixture hardens after storage try adding some rice to the mixture, old rice filled pantyhose will work and is reusable.
This will suck moisture out of the mixture and prevent clumping.
To make dishwashing tabs, scoop the mixture into a silicone ice tray and allow to set.

Unlike dish soap, dish soap is designed to create a thick, sudsy foam that helps break down food and stains on pots, plates, cups, and bowls. It works very differently than dishwashing detergent. Although both come in liquid form, they’re not apples for apples.

If you use the same amount of detergent as dishwashing liquid in a dishwasher, you should be prepared for a mess. The detergent creates a thick foam of soapy water and bubbles in the dishwasher, which eventually leaks through the door and drains into the sink. That might be funny in movies, but it’s not so funny when it’s your flooring and drywall that could get damaged.
If you put regular washing-up liquid in a dishwasher, stop the cycle immediately and rinse the appliance thoroughly.
Things happen and we can sometimes get so busy with daily life that we make the mistake of putting dish soap in the dishwasher. The first step is to stay calm and the second step is to flush the soap out of the system.
If you accidentally put detergent in a dishwasher, stop the washing machine immediately. When things have calmed down a bit, put the washing machine in rinse mode to get rid of the suds as quickly as possible. This could still result in overflowing sinks and suds on the floor, so you might have to stop and restart the rinse cycle a few times in the name of damage control.

How to make homemade dishwashing liquid in no time.
While you really should only use dish soap (otherwise you could damage your machine and void your warranty), there are some homemade solutions that will result in clean dishes in your dishwasher.
This recipe is a dry mix, so it’s best kept in a large jar or bag for easy scooping and pouring. All you need is:
1 cup washing soda
1 cup baking soda
1 cup kosher salt
Just mix these ingredients together. Pour the mixture into the detergent dispenser to use. If you add enough energy to a solid, these tight bonds break and the molecules begin to flow past each other as a liquid. If you add enough energy to a liquid, the molecules start doing their own things and start flying in all directions and you end up with a gas. Think of water going from ice (solid) to regular water (liquid) to vapor (gas) as it gets hotter.
Because the molecules move more and further when you add heat, whatever you heat actually expands and gets bigger the hotter it gets! Since gas molecules are already running all over the place, new energy will make a gas expand much more than a solid. So when you heated the ivory soap, both the solid soap and the air bubbles inside it started to expand, but the air bubbles expanded much more than the soap, causing it to foam up into a giant soap monster!

The main differences are in pH, the presence or absence of bleach, and the types of surfactants — long molecules that are water-loving on one end and oil-loving on the other. “Surfactants are active ingredients that we put in cleaning products that bridge the gap between water and greasy dirt and help wash it away,” says Allen Clauss, a chemistry professor at UW-Madison who previously worked at consumer goods company Procter & Gamble .
Automatic dishwashing detergents use a brute-force approach that’s effective but far too harsh on skin, breaking down stains and high-pH foods and chlorine bleach. “It’s a great way to clean your dishes, but it’s not something you want to get your hands on,” says Clauss. Hand dishwashing detergents contain no bleach and use surfactant blends that are kind to the skin and have a near-neutral pH.
Detergents fall somewhere in between – tougher than hand dishwashing products but gentle enough on fabrics and dyes. Traditional powder versions are closer to automatic dishwashing detergents and use a higher pH to clean, while the newer liquid detergents are closer to neutral pH and rely more on surfactants that are less susceptible to water hardness, enzymes to break down proteins, starches and fats and water soluble polymers to help disperse dirt and oils.
