What are the benefits of a ring light?
The ring lights main purpose is to cast an even light onto the subject. This reduces shadows in the face and minimizes blemishes, while illuminating the eyes. This is why ring lights are commonly used in portraits, glamour shots, or even videography capturing only one subject.
Does a ring light really work?
A ring light produces soft, direct light on a subject, minimizing shadows. When you take a photo using a ring light, place the camera lens in the center of the ring; this ensures that your subject is lit evenly from the direction of the camera.
Which is better ring light or LED light?
Ring lights are better suited for portraitures and beauty shots. LED panel lights are better suited for broad lighting requirements (full body etc.) Ring lights are better suited for shooting macro photography, flower photography and other close-up photography requirements.
Is a ring light worth the money?
The answer is yes – these are designed specifically for this purpose! There are a few reasons they work so well. First of all, the type of light used in these is optimized to get as close to natural lighting from the sun as possible. This helps your features pop, and gives you a great natural look.
What can I use instead of a ring light?
A more compact and perfect alternative to ring lights – Logitech Litra Glow Review. Logitech Litra Glow Review – Everyone wants to look their best in front of the camera: whether you are a content creator, streamer, YouTuber, or even just an average Joe who is having a video call meeting with colleagues at home.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
However, too many focus on getting a good webcam. While it’s not entirely wrong, there’s another important aspect that people don’t usually pay attention to: lighting.
Good lighting is essential when working with cameras, whether cheap or expensive. And while you may have a ring light at home (like this ring light from Elgato or the Key Light Air) or plan to buy one, it requires a lot of space and sometimes a tedious set-up — not to mention the need to have a power outlet available .
The Logitech Litra Glow is this premium, compact, USB-powered, easy-to-use light that can be placed on the monitor to help you look more professional in any setting. You can even mount it on your laptop screen, meaning you can easily carry it in your bag when you’re on the go and creating video content wherever you are.
It features Logitech’s TrueSoft technology and an innovative edgeless diffuser to spread the light evenly and deliver your choice of full-spectrum LED light.
It has built-in physical buttons on the back that are accessible at all times to gradually change the brightness and color temperature (whether you want cooler or warmer). It has a color temperature range of 2700K – 6500K with a brightness of up to 250 lumens. These can be changed instantly by pressing the buttons, but if you have the Logitech G HUB desktop app installed you can do it from there as well.
During my testing, I found that I never found the need to open G HUB. So if you don’t have Logitech peripherals, you can control everything right from the Litra Glow itself. You get more options, e.g. B. Lighting presets and the ability to save and load different settings with G HUB.
As a compact, premium streaming light, the Litra Glow offers a variety of placements. You can either use the monitor mount or take it out and install it on a standard camera tripod. This is very useful if you want to use it for off-monitor product photography or content creation.
The monitor mount also allows you to adjust the height, tilt and rotation to create the perfect angle. The integrated cable management can make the 1.5m cable invisible, but I wish Logitech offered a longer cable here. Even with my PC case on the desk, it’s difficult to manage the cables as you don’t have much to work with and the cable can end up dangling in sight. I think it would be more difficult if you have your PC case on the floor.
Luckily, I use the Omnidesk ARC Pro Single Monitor Arm, which has two USB passthrough slots on the bottom of my monitor so I can tidy things up and hide the cable completely.
In fact, a lot of research and technology is put into the LED light. The Litra Glow isn’t just your simple extra portable light to illuminate you in front of the screen. TrueSoft technology ensures that the subject is bathed in soft and diffused, cinematic LED light. Not only is the light gentle on the eyes, the light is evenly distributed.
I have never found the need to set the brightness to the maximum as the glare is generated due to the distance between your monitor and you. You can adjust the brightness on the go to find the right setting depending on how far you are from the light and how you want to look at the camera.
Without Litra Glow With Litra Glow
The flexibility of the light allows me to tilt it down to help with product photography for review here at Craving Tech. For example, I can now combine the lights coming from the Elgato Key Light Air from the front and the Logitech Litra Glow from above to create a nice, diffused light. This makes it easier to photograph gaming peripherals or anything else on my new Omnidesk Pro 2020 desk with better looking results.
If you pick up your hands while doing something in front of your monitor, you can tilt the Litra Glow slightly to illuminate the desk area as well. Pretty useful in many situations.
Conclusion of the Logitech Litra Glow review
Logitech Litra Glow is a must-have accessory for content creators like streamers, YouTubers, etc., especially if you don’t have a proper lighting setup yet. Thanks to its compact dimensions, you can easily place it on your monitor or laptop screen, or even take it with you when you travel. Powered by USB, you should be able to connect it to a portable battery to light you up anywhere while you create content – even off the monitor.
All the controls are on the back of the light and you can change its brightness and color temperature to get the perfect look and style you are looking for.
It’s definitely the perfect complement to your Logitech StreamCam as a content creator, but also if you just want a more reasonable setup for Zoom calls and the like. Thanks to the compact form factor, there is no additional clutter on the desk compared to using ring lights placed with a stand.
The Litra Glow is priced at AUD$89.95 and will be available from February 14, 2022 at select JB Hi-Fi stores and online at the JB Hi-Fi and Logitech website (via Backorder).

No need to take our word for it — look out for that telltale ring-like twinkle in a person’s pupils as they film themselves. Check the number of LEDs a ring light has – the more LEDs, the softer and more diffuse the light quality, making it more flattering and reducing the highlighting of blemishes and blemishes.

Joby is an established brand in the photo and video world, so you can be assured that the ring light is a quality product. The Beamo ring light is just as well made as Joby’s flexible GorillaPod tripod, but stands out for its ability to be customized and accessorized
There are three cold shoe mounts around the Beamo ring light for you to attach other accessories. A microphone is an obvious choice, although you might also need a smartphone clamp or tablet stand if you need to place an autocue script in your eyeline – just note that these are sold separately. The Beamo is also easy to use with other Joby products like the GorillaPod mentioned above, meaning you have a range of placement and attachment options.
Of course, all of this wouldn’t mean anything if the light itself wasn’t good, but the Beamo is solid. A brightness of 100 lux at 1m is just what you need and 10-stop dimming is useful for getting things down to the level you want. It also has an adjustable color temperature from 3000K to 5600K, which is handy for adapting to any ambient light around you.

It’s a 10-inch light, so smaller than others on the list, but its desktop setup means it’s obviously closer to your face anyway, so this shouldn’t be too much of an issue.
There are many reasonable design options with this light such as: B. the USB connectivity, which allows the light to be powered by your computer – perfect for long calls or marathon streaming sessions. It also has an integrated flexible phone holder that allows you to position and orient your phone for the ideal frame.
Despite its small size, the Neewer Table Top ring light packs 120 LEDs, which means you should have adequate lighting even if you’re broadcasting from a dark broom closet (we’ve all been there). The ten brightness levels also give you good flexibility. While it’s probably too small to be used as anything other than a close-up table lamp, the Neewer Table Top Ring Light is a great choice for cutting out clutter – and it comes at a pretty reasonable price, too.

How Do I Pick the Best Ring Lights? At first glance, most ring lights look pretty similar. However, there are a few criteria we looked for when making our picks of the best ring lights above to ensure each is worth the investment. The main things to consider are the size of the ring and the number of LEDs as this affects the brightness and therefore the proximity required. We also considered dimmer/brightness controls, versatility (meaning they can support different types of cameras) and reliability, which is often due to the brand’s reputation. There’s a lot more we can cover here – if you’re looking for more pointers, check out our guide to starting vlogging and editing a video on TikTok.
What ring light size should I buy? The larger the ring light, the softer and more comfortable the light quality. When selecting our list of the best ring lights, we generally looked for a minimum size of at least 12 inches in diameter, as we felt this offered the needed balance of light quality and price. There’s one exception – the small 6-inch Mactrem light, which is a solution for those who want something ultra-portable for creating videos on the go, but other than that each product is at least 12 inches in diameter, and in some cases considerable more. Aside from size, an LED ring light also differs in the number of LEDs, which affects how diffuse and potentially bright the light is. That’s why we made sure to include products with lots of LEDs.
What controls should a ring light have? Most people will benefit from choosing one of the best ring lights with dimming/brightness control: Having a ring light that lets you control the brightness will make life a lot easier – if the brightness is fixed, then that’s your only option the light level is wrong, move the light closer or further away. A dimming control allows you to place the light where you want it and change the light intensity as needed.
Do I need a ring light with changing color temperature? Most users are fine with white LED ring lights, as it’s the easiest way to get accurate, true-to-life color. However, for those who want to balance other available light like incandescent bulbs or refine the light based on skin tone, a ring light with color temperature control might be worth considering. Depending on the model, they can be controlled either with attachable filters or with integrated rotary controls. Some sophisticated models have options to change the RGB colors, making them extremely customizable, while others have filtered gels that sit over the LEDs themselves. Professional LED lights can even have creative lighting effects to mimic natural light like lightning, gunshots or campfires.
Are battery powered ring lights worth it? It really depends on whether you need to be able to get the light outside or on location. Some models are AC only and so can be a bit cheaper due to the extra connectors and electronics required to accommodate batteries, but there are models that offer both. With the ability to both connect to mains power and draw power from a battery, a ring light is the most flexible option, allowing for both studio and location lighting. But ring lights with both are often more expensive than models that only stick to one or the other. If you’re filming indoors for a long time, stick with a mains powered ring light. However, if you are outdoors and able to film in shorter bursts, opt for a battery powered light.
What is the best ring light brand? The popularity of ring lights on platforms like TikTok has meant that there are many cheap ring lights out there and it can be difficult to sort through. For this list, we’ve stuck to reputable brands like Joby, Neewer, and Rotolight. These manufacturers make reasonably priced lamps, but you can be assured that they still offer a decent level of quality and aren’t flimsy devices that just fall apart after a short while.
Can ring lights accommodate different cameras? One useful feature to look for in the best ring lights is multi-camera support. Not only are the best ring lights good for illuminating a subject, but they can also be easily modified to support different types of cameras, or connect well with other useful video accessories like microphones. One of the reasons we rate the Joby Beamo, our #1 best ring light overall, so highly is that its built-in cold-shoe mounts make it easy to add more accessories for an all-round video setup. We’ve also included products that work well with different types of video setups, like the Ivisii 19-inch ring light, which is a particularly good choice for those shooting video on an iPad. For tips on creating videos, see our guide to starting vlogging, our guide to editing a video on TikTok, our Instagram Reels tutorial, and our guide to using green screen on TikTok.

What size of ring light is best?
Size Matters
Common sizes on Amazon are 12, 14, and 18-inches, and they all perform well. The 12-inch is best when you only want a headshot. If you have the budget get an 18-inch ring light since this will give you more flexibility in its use, and more light.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
Capturing good video content takes more than a great script and a video camera.
Lighting sets the mood and tone of your video and literally helps make you look good. More importantly, good lighting makes you stand out as a professional video creator and an expert in your niche. Good lighting helps you attract a larger audience and more buyers to your products and services.
Why many YouTubers choose ring lights to illuminate their YouTube videos
Although vloggers and YouTubers can choose from softboxes, umbrella lights, and LED panel lights, why do so many consider ring lights their perfect video light?
Here are six simple reasons why YouTubers choose ring lights as their number one light source when recording YouTube videos. Ring lights are easy to use for any beginner, right out of the box. Ring lights allow creators to capture beautiful, professional-looking footage. They take up far less space than almost any other video lighting kit. The lights create an even and shadowless soft light that envelops the subject and helps hide blemishes. The lighting looks good even when the camera gets close to you. Ring lights create distinctive circular catchlights in the eyes that many people find attractive and desirable.
What is a ring light?
As the name suggests, a ring light is a light in the shape of a ring. The light source is usually either a circular fluorescent tube or hundreds of surface mount LEDs.
The light source, either fluorescent tubes or LEDs, sits in a round housing. On one side of this circle or ring is a control box/panel and an assemblage point. The mounting point allows you to mount the light on a stand. The panel houses the power button and other electronic parts, such as B. Dimmer controls.
Circular lamps with fluorescent tubes draw their power directly from a socket, i.e. they work on mains voltage (a ballast in the control panel regulates the current supply to the lamp). LED light rings use direct current, so they can be powered by either rechargeable batteries or with a DC adapter.
What is a ring light used for?
Ring lights have become popular with many digital content creators, especially beauty and hair vloggers. Many will use a ring light for makeup tutorials because of the shadowless, soft light they create. Because the ring light and camera can both get close to the subject, the viewer can see every detail of the makeup tutorial.
They are also used extensively in fashion photography, music videos, and entertainment videos. The type of light and those prominent catchlights help add a bit of glamor to the look of the video.
Ring lights can be useful when demonstrating a product or project on a tabletop. The light is rotated 90 degrees and the camera is aimed through the ring.
How to use a ring light for videos?
The light is mounted on a tripod and is usually placed directly in front of the subject. The camera is then placed either in the empty space inside the ring or a little further back from the ring. With this arrangement, the light appears to come from all directions around the camera lens. This creates a pleasant shadow-free soft light.
Most often, a ring light is used for a close-up or mid-range shot of the subject.
When the ring light is used alone and the subject is close to a background or wall, it can appear as if it is outlined by a halo shadow around its edge.
For an even more interesting effect, place a pair of bright lights behind the subject but on either side so they’re out of the frame. This creates a beautiful hair light effect that can be enhanced by using a colored gel.
If you have a particularly powerful ring light and your walls are painted white, why not flip the ring light around and let the light shine off the wall and ceiling. This creates an even softer light, although you may also need another light source in the room.
When you use your webcam to record your video, take the ring light off the light stand and place it on your desk. You need to support it to keep it safe.
Don’t wear glasses when using a ring light, assuming you’re the subject. Ring lights are famous for the catch lights they create in the subject’s eyes. If you wear glasses, the bright ring of light reflects off the lenses clearly.
Create catchlights with a ring light
If you like catchlights, the specular lights bouncing off your subject’s eyes, you’ll probably love ring lights.
Notice the prominent circular catchlights in the subject’s eyes caused by a ring light. You can also see the ring light reflecting off the tip of the nose.
If the ring light is large or you can get the ring light close to your subject, you’ll find it easy to record videos with bright ring-shaped catchlights. They are usually reflected off the subject’s eyes, but you can see in the image below that the circular light is reflected off the tip of the subject’s nose.
When using a fluorescent ring light or ring light with a diffuser, the catchlights appear as bright circles. However, when using uncovered LED lights, the catch lights are a circle of bright points of light that are reflections of each LED.
These circular catchlights have become very popular, probably because they help add a bit of glamor to any video.
What to look for when choosing a ring light for YouTube videos
Size matters
Wider lights produce a softer light. So, all things being equal, a larger ring light is better for your video production. Common sizes on Amazon are 12, 14, and 18 inches, and they all work well. The 12-inch is best if you just want a headshot. If you have the budget, get an 18 inch ring light as it will give you more flexibility of use and more light.
The sizes usually refer to the outside diameter. When two numbers are given for a light, say 18 and 14 inches, the small number is the inside diameter of the ring. In this case the ring with the tube or LEDs is 4 inches wide.
Dimmable
If your light is dimmable, you have more control over how much light you throw on your subject. In the absence of a dimmer, the only way to adjust the level of illumination is by moving the light farther from your subject. LED lights should offer a larger dimming range.
Adjustable color temperature
Do you need a lamp where you can adjust the color temperature? If so, look for an LED light with this feature. From personal experience I have never used the variable color temperature feature with my lights and have always run them at daylight color temperatures (5500K). So I could have saved myself some money.
High color rendering index
The higher the CRI of your light, the more natural and vibrant the colors will appear. Look for 90+ or even 95+ CRI values. If the CRI value is not mentioned in the listing, it may be because the lights use lower quality bulbs or LEDs.
power options
Having power options can be a good thing for you. Being able to connect rechargeable batteries to your light means one less cord to trip over or your light is safe to take outside.
Additional diffusion
Choose fluorescent tube ring lights and the extra surface creates more diffused light. But place a diffuser over the face of the ring and you have an even softer light.
Flexible neck or rotating ring head
The ability to rotate the ring head can be particularly useful when not required. A rotating ring head allows you to position the light slightly above your subject and tilt it down slightly. If the ring head can be rotated 90 degrees forward or backward, it can be used to reflect light off the ceiling or illuminate a lying object.
Some ring lights, like the YONGNUO YN608, don’t have a rotating ring head. But you could buy a light stand adapter to rotate the ring head.
Should you get a fluorescent or LED ring light
Although fluorescent lamps are much more efficient than incandescent lamps, LEDs are even better at converting electrical energy into light. So from an ecological point of view, LED ring lights are the better choice.
LEDs are less fragile than fluorescent tubes. LEDs are likely to survive rough handling. When fluorescent tubes break, the toxic mercury they contain is released.
If your home studio gets hot quickly, or you don’t want your air conditioning working harder, choose LEDs. They get cold while the tube lights get hot.
When accurate color reproduction is important to you, such as when you want vivid and natural skin tones, LEDs may be a better choice. Check the color rendering index (CRI) of the lights. To get vivid and natural skin tones, you should look for a high CRI of 90 or more. Ideally, a CRI of 95+ will give you the best results. This is more common with high-quality LEDs than with fluorescent tubes.
LEDs last much longer than fluorescent tubes. However, you can replace a tube. LEDs cannot be replaced. Depending on how long it is used and how it is handled, a fluorescent tube can last for months, while an LED light can last for years.
Aging fluorescent tubes can flicker, produce less light than when new, and even develop a hum or hum. However, LEDs are typically flicker-free, and I haven’t found any that make a noise.
Fluorescent tubes require a socket. However, you can use some LED ring lights with an AC adapter or with batteries. If you plan to use your lighting outdoors, LEDs offer an easier and safer option.
If you want a variable color temperature light, from 3,200 to 5,500K, LEDs are again the option to choose from.
summary
For most people, LED ring lights tend to be a better option than fluorescent ones. The LEDs last longer and do not visibly dim with use. They are also more robust than fluorescent lights when moved or transported. Provided you get a high CRI LED ring light, you or your subject should look great. Also, look for one that is sturdy in construction so you can enjoy trouble-free operation. If you can afford it, buy the larger models, e.g. B. an 18 or 20 inch ring light. You’ll find that the larger ring lights not only provide better results, but also allow you to shoot more than just headshots.

Do ring lights use a lot of electricity?
How Much Power Do Ring Lights Use? Ring lights use between 5 W and 75 W of power on average. Battery and USB-powered ring lights usually consume 5 to 10 watts. Studio-grade ring lights that use power adapters may consume up to 75 W to achieve the maximum light output possible.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
Ring lights don’t use much power. Most ring lights are powered by a USB port or batteries, which by nature cannot provide too much power. Also, ring lights use energy efficient LEDs. However, some professional ring lights use power adapters, which means they use a lot more power.
This article explains how much power ring lights really use and some factors that affect power consumption. I’ll also share a few tips that will help you make your ring light more energy efficient.
How much power do ring lights use?
Ring lights use between 5W and 75W of electricity on average. Battery and USB powered ring lights typically use 5 to 10 watts. Studio quality ring lights that use power supplies can draw up to 75W to achieve the maximum light output possible.
I understand that the gap between 5W and 75W is quite big. If you don’t know how much power your ring light is using, you can usually check the back or bottom of the device.
Battery operated ring lights cannot draw too much power. Otherwise, they will run out of juice long before you finish your photoshoot.
However, most consumer ring lights are USB powered.
USB has several power standards. The maximum output power can be from 0.5W to 240W.
However, since most computers and cameras use standard USB 2.0 and 3.0, your ring light is likely to draw between 2.5W and 4.5W.
If you have a huge, powerful ring light that can get brighter than the sun, the power consumption is typically in the 40W – 60W range.
However, keep in mind that ring lights use LED lights almost exclusively. They’re incredibly efficient and you don’t need a lot of power to reach extreme levels of brightness.
Read my article on whether ring lights are good for Zoom calls.
Factors affecting the power consumption of the ring light
There are a few differentiators between different ring lights.
Connector type, size, and number of LEDs affect how much power a ring light requires. Let’s see what these factors are.
diameter
The diameter of your ring light directly affects power consumption. The bigger it is, the more LEDs you can fit inside.
However, this is a generalization that should be used with caution. Some high quality ring lights can cram twice as many LEDs compared to cheaper alternatives.
But it is safe to assume that a 12″ (30.48 cm) ring light will use more power than a 6″ (15.24 cm) ring light.
number of LEDs
This ties directly into the previous point. A higher number of LEDs means more power consumption.
Again, it depends on the size and power output of the LEDs. Some ring lights can get much brighter and use more power while having fewer LEDs than the competition.
A quality ring light can have over a hundred tiny LEDs. And yet the device may use less power than a ring light with 12 giant LED bulbs.
So the number of LEDs is not the only factor affecting power consumption.
battery
If a ring light is operated with a built-in rechargeable battery, it must not consume too much power. These ring lights are typically smaller and more energy efficient than their USB counterparts.
Some ring lights offer separate external batteries that allow you to shoot longer. But the power consumption remains the same.
If your ring light uses standard single cell batteries, it will be even less powerful.
They have the weakest output power. But at least they use very little electricity.
USB vs. power adapter
I have already explained that USB powered ring lights have a limit of 2.5W – 4.5W. That’s not much if you have an external power supply or a computer to connect the light to.
However, if you’re using batteries or a camera to power it, you’ll run out of juice in an hour or two at max brightness.
In comparison to a power supply unit, it all looks rather small.
High quality studio ring lights often consume 50W – 60W. A standard USB cable can’t even come close to meeting these performance requirements.
This is where power adapters with power cords come into play. They look similar to laptop power adapters because they convert AC power to DC power.
So, studio ring lights can use a significant amount of power. They’re the only type of ring light that can impact your monthly electric bill.
How to reduce the power consumption of ring lights
It doesn’t matter if you’re using a studio ring light that uses a lot of power, or you just want your battery to last a little longer.
You are in the right place because I am going to give you a few tips. Read on to learn how to reduce the power consumption of your ring light.
Lower the brightness
Most ring lights on the market are dimmable. After all, you can’t take great photos with a lamp that has a fixed brightness setting.
You can often get a similar or even better result by dimming the brightness a bit and bringing the ring light closer to you.
The brightness levels of your ring light have by far the greatest impact on power consumption.
It’s not a problem if you have it plugged into a computer or wall socket. But even the smallest and faintest ring light can drain your battery in under an hour.
So lower the brightness, bring the camera and light closer to you, and you’ll save a lot of power.
Use whatever ring light you need
I have already explained that the diameter and number of LEDs have a significant impact on power consumption.
For example, a 50W ring light would be overkill for shooting video in front of the computer.
If you are a professional photographer or YouTuber, I would recommend purchasing several ring lights of different sizes. So you always have the right light for every scenario.
If you prioritize battery life, always bring the smallest ring light you can have. That way you don’t have to compromise on quality.
Use other light sources
A ring light is a great light source. You get an even light on your face that gives your skin a natural glow and makes your eyes shine.
However, it should not be your only light source.
It doesn’t matter whether you’re shooting outside, inside, at night or in the afternoon.
You can always use other light sources, e.g. B. a street lamp, sunlight or the modest light bulb of your room.
Turn on the ring light and play with your camera’s exposure setting until you get it just right.
Use the ring light only when you have to
Most of the time we use ring lights just because we have one.
But the thing is, sometimes a ring light can affect the quality. If you use it even in good light conditions, your photos and videos may look washed out.
Ring lights are very useful for close-ups. You can even use them as a fill light in a pinch.
But I’ve seen some TikTokers use ring lights when it wasn’t necessary. For example, some would stand 30 feet (9.14 m) from the ring light. The ring light can’t even reach its subject.
So conserve your ring light’s battery by only using it when you really need it.
Check out which is better for streaming: ring lights vs. key lights.
Final Thoughts
Ring lights use a few tiny LEDs that don’t draw much power. Ring lights require correspondingly little power to illuminate a subject.
Since ring lights are used for close-up photography, they often only run on USB power or batteries. However, professional ring lights require a lot of power, so you need to plug them into an outlet.
How expensive is a ring light?
Though ring lights can be purchased from traditional tech retailers like Best Buy, they’re also available via Amazon, Best Buy, and Urban Outfitters, with prices starting as low as $11.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
For the uninitiated, a ring light is a relatively simple tool that delivers pro-level lighting in photos and videos. The device generally consists of a circle of small LED bulbs or a continuous ring of light (hence the name) that provides an evenly diffused light source for photos and videos, regardless of your location’s natural light.
Ring lights, first popularized by YouTubers and DSLR photographers, now come in a variety of sizes and models, each meeting a unique set of needs, from dimmable rings on tall mounts to smaller options designed specifically for phone cameras were developed. Although ring lights can be bought from traditional tech retailers like Best Buy, they’re also available through Amazon, Best Buy, and Urban Outfitters, with prices starting at $11.
What should you look for in a ring light?
According to Teen Vogue visual editor Louisiana Gelpi, there are a few things to consider when shopping for a ring light. Of course, the first thing to think about is why you’re buying a ring light in the first place, as your needs will vary. In general though, the most important thing to watch out for is the brightness! Most ring lights have different lighting settings, meaning you can easily adjust how bright or dim you want the light to be. “A dimmer light might be nice when you have some natural light but want it a bit brighter or want to fill in some shadows, while a brighter light might be nice when you have no light at all (e.g. at night) and need something “to be clear and visible,” shares Lousiana. If your right light doesn’t have an adjustable brightness setting, don’t worry. Louisiana’s tip is that you can always move the light further away from you to make something dimmer, or closer to you to create a brighter light.

How far away should a ring light be?
How Far Away Should a Ring Light Be? If you want your videos to be clear, crisp, and bright, position the ring light about two feet from the subject. The exact distance will vary depending on what kind of look you are going for in your video. Play around with it until you achieve the desired effect.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
The good news is that it’s not nearly as complicated as it seems!
As you probably know, creating quality video content takes a lot more than just a fun script and a nice video camera.
You also need the right lighting. Lighting sets the tone and mood of your video and helps you focus on your subject.
Good lighting can make or break your video – so you can’t afford to be uninformed on this!
Your ring light will help you create better content – but you need to know how to use it properly! That’s what we’re here for today.
What is a ring light?
A ring light is a circular light intended to be placed around your camera lens. By mounting your camera or smartphone (usually with a tripod) in the center of the ring, you get more direct, more even lighting of what you’re photographing or filming.
They cast fewer shadows because the origin of the light is so close to the camera lens. This can help to see tiny details in your videos. They’re perfect for almost anything, whether it’s food, fashion, or makeup tutorials.
Reasons to use a ring light
Still not convinced that a ring light is an investment you need to make for your business? Before we dive into the details of setting up and working with your light, let’s dig a little deeper into all the benefits a ring light can offer you when creating content.
highlight details
First of all, there is no better tool to bring out details in a shoot than a ring light.
Originally developed for dental and medical practices, they offer laser precision when it comes to fine-tuning.
The unique circular design of this type of light allows you to use a camera inside the hole, meaning it’s easier to focus on specific details.
video production
Ring lights are great for video production. When used as the sole light source, they create beautiful halo shadows that outline the subject of the video. This offers a dramatic and highly professional look.
macro photography
Ring lights also help you take detailed photos – they’re not just for video, although that’s the main purpose we’ll be focusing on in this article.
When taking a photo, this type of light allows you to balance the lighting so that it is evenly distributed on all sides and angles of a model or object.
Also, you can do this without spending a ton of money.
create color effects
Ring lights can also help you create color effects. All you have to do is swap out regular white light bulbs for ones of a different color. Alternatively, you can apply a colored gel to different parts of the lamp.
While this is a feature that is used less often, it’s great to say the least. With it, you can create gradients that flow through any direction of the photo or video.
makeup application
When natural light is at a premium, there’s no better makeup application tool than a ring light. That’s why you almost always see them in professional salons and studios – many beauty queens even have them in their bedrooms!
Are ring lights good for videos?
When you record a video, be it with your smartphone or with your camera, you won’t find a better option than a light ring.
These devices direct lighting exactly where it’s needed, and because they’re so affordable, they should be a staple in every videographer’s bag.
Using a ring light for video
Ready to start? Most often you mount the light on a tripod and place it directly in front of the subject.
Your camera will be placed in the empty space inside the ring, or set back slightly from the ring. This way the light comes from all directions around the lens and offers a soft, attractive light.
Put the camera in the middle
Start by plugging in your ring light. These can either be plugged directly into the wall or, in some cases, be USB powered.
Position your camera in the center of the ring light. Most ring lights come with tripods that allow you to easily position your camera — others come with dedicated mounts.
If that’s not the case, don’t rush and buy a tripod. You can easily mimic this effect by making a stand out of books or other objects to hold your camera.
Don’t have a smartphone or camera? No problem! You can use a laptop camera. All you have to do is tweak the positioning a bit. You place the ring light just above the top edge of your laptop screen. This way your face will be properly lit. As simple as that!
Check positioning and reflections
Before you start shooting, try placing the light at different distances so you can get an idea of which gap best suits your surroundings and the natural light.
Avoid reflective surfaces in the shot – this can be difficult if someone is wearing glasses in the video. However, you can position the light to minimize reflections.
How far away should a ring light be?
If you want your videos to be clear, crisp, and bright, position the ring light about 2 feet from the subject.
The exact spacing depends on the look you want to achieve in your video. Play around with it until you get the effect you want.
Set the temperature
Some ring lights come with temperature controls that let you adjust how warm or cool the light is. Play around with it to find the setting you want.
Adjust the brightness
As with temperature, most ring lights have adjustable brightness controls – the brighter the light, the more accurately the camera will capture colors and sharpen the feel of the video footage.
Choosing the ideal ring light for videos
Once you’ve learned how to use a ring light for video, it’s time to start looking for the right one. Here are some tips to help you make the best purchase.
Camera vs tablet vs smartphone
What kind of device will you use with your ring light? Is it a camera, a tablet or a smartphone?
You need to take this into account as the size of your device will affect how big your lights need to be.
performance and light size
The next thing to consider is the size and power rating. The higher the color rendering index (CRI) and lumens (lm) of your device, the better the output and color representation in the illuminated object.
That might not sound like a big deal and you might be tempted to buy a lower rated device to save money.
However, performance and light intensity are important, especially for video recordings. Some ring lights even come with dimmer knobs, so you can adjust the brightness based on the setting too
Flexible neck or rotating ring head
Do you need to be able to adjust the head of the ring light to point it at the floor or (less commonly) the ceiling?
Then you should go for one with a gooseneck or rotating head so you can throw it where the light is needed.
color temperature
When filming videos or taking photos, warm color temperatures are usually required. However, some ring lights come with the ability to change color with clip-on filters. You can also buy ring lights with built-in dimmers to provide the same benefit.
Fluorescent vs LED
If possible, choose a ring light with LED lights instead of fluorescent tubes. The good news is that most ring lights today are LED because they don’t get hot with prolonged use, nor do they flicker or buzz.
Other Accessories
Consider the other accessories that may come with your purchase. Some ring light sales include things like power adapters, stands, mirrors, carrying cases, and phone or camera mounts. While these aren’t necessary, they can certainly sweeten the deal!

Which is better soft box or ring light?
When it comes to ring light vs. softbox for product photography, you’ll most likely get the most pleasing results with softbox lighting. Softboxes are also the best choice for those wanting the most natural look possible from their artificial lighting.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
Two of the most popular types of studio lighting for content creation are a softbox light and a ring light. But what is the difference between the two and which one should you invest in? Read on to find out what is the best lighting for content creators.
Is a 10 inch ring light Good?
A 10-inch ring light is suitable for close-ups. If you mostly film makeup tutorials, you do not need a light that can brighten an entire room. If you need to fill a room or outdoor space with light, consider getting an 18-inch ring light. The larger size will help illuminate a large area and more of the background.

Ring lights are one of the most common lighting choices for creators. A small ring light helps illuminate the subject of the shot and makes it easier to capture high-quality video. However, they come in different sizes.
So what size ring light do YouTubers use?
The most common ring lights that YouTubers use are 10 inch and 18 inch. The 10 inch ring lights are considered “selfie lights”. The 18-inch lights can illuminate a small to medium-sized room instead of a single face. So it depends on how you use it.
For more information on ring lights and some recommended ring lights, see What ring lights do creators use? (With examples).
Here’s what you should know to find the right ring light size.
What is a ring light?
A ring light is a ring of LED lights that many creators use to provide additional lighting. The ring is typically mounted on a tripod or on top of a camera.
Unlike your camera’s flash, a ring light is designed to provide continuous illumination.
The most powerful ring lights use battery packs or AC power to produce bright white light. Smaller, portable ring lights have built-in rechargeable batteries.
Why Do YouTubers Use Ring Lights? Using additional lighting tends to improve the clarity of videos and photos, especially when filming indoors.
In a professional film production, complicated light rings with several light beams are often used. Even professional photographers usually use lights to improve the quality of their photos.
A ring light allows amateurs to produce better video by ensuring every shot is properly lit. You don’t need any film production or photography experience to illuminate a scene with a ring light. You direct the light onto your subject.
Using a ring light is for YouTubers – e.g. B. Beauty Vloggers – the easiest way to create professional-quality content without professional lighting equipment and extra crew. However, they come in different sizes.
What is the most common size for a ring light?
Notice the beautiful ring-shaped reflection in her eyes.
Ring light size is usually given in inches and refers to the outside diameter of the light.
The product details may occasionally list two measurements, e.g. B. 14″/12″. The smaller dimension is the inside diameter of the ring, while the larger dimension is the outside diameter.
The most common ring light sizes are 10 inches and 18 inches, but they are available in sizes from 8 to 20 inches. The 10 inch ring lights are considered “selfie lights”.
The 18-inch lights can illuminate a small to medium-sized room instead of a single face.
Ring lights have LED bulbs. A larger ring contains more LEDs, increasing light output. A larger diameter also spreads the light over a larger space.
With a small ring light, the LEDs are close together. This creates a more concentrated beam of light. The LEDs are less likely to illuminate an object that is more than several feet from the camera.
However, the concentrated light provides stronger illumination of a close subject.
What size ring light do you need for selfies?
If you’re taking headshots or selfies, all you might need is a small 10-inch ring light.
Most 10 inch ring lights are advertised as “selfie ring lights”. They usually provide enough lighting to bring out the details of your face, even if you’re filming in a dimly lit room.
A 10-inch ring light provides a more focused beam of light. Rather than filling a large space, it primarily illuminates the area within two to three feet of the light.
In addition to 10-inch ring lights, you’ll also find 8-inch and 12-inch options.
A 12″ ring light will likely provide slightly more illumination than a 10″ or 8″ light.
12-inch ring lights may allow you to adjust the color temperature to get the right look, but they also tend to cost a bit more and take up more space.
The 8-inch ring lights offer limited performance but are often the most portable option. Stay mobile while filming by using an 8 inch ring light with smartphone clip.
This is useful for filming yourself while holding your smartphone as the light is attached to the phone.
What is the best ring light size for filming in a large room?
Some of the largest ring lights measure 18 inches and can complement existing lighting in a large room. Fourteen inches is another common size.
Many of the larger lights offer two power options. You can operate the light with AC power or a battery pack. However, in order to achieve full brightness, it is often necessary to plug the light into an AC outlet.
A larger ring light can be used for more than just highlighting your face. They can illuminate a small to medium sized room.
While a large ring light can brighten up a room, it can also be used for close-up photography.
Most ring lights are dimmable, allowing you to lower the brightness of the LED to highlight your face instead of the entire background.
Larger ring lights also use more power. While many 18″ ring lights contain a rechargeable battery, they may offer a shorter lifespan than 10″ or 12″ ring lights with a built-in battery.
If you have a larger space, you might consider an LED lighting kit with LED panels or a Fresnel light with a soft box instead.
Read more about other types of lighting options for YouTube in What lighting do YouTubers use?
What else should you consider before buying a ring light?
Size isn’t the only factor to consider when choosing a ring light. Two 8 inch ring lights from different manufacturers can produce two completely different results.
Some of the most important details to pay attention to are:
Color rendering index (CRI)
color temperature
settings and controls
power options
Color rendering is the ability of light to correctly reproduce the natural colors of objects and backgrounds. A high color rendering index (CRI) makes colors more vivid instead of dull and washed out.
The best ring lights have a CRI of 95 or higher. Below average lamps often have a CRI of 90 or less.
High color temperature is also required to bring out natural colors and increase video clarity.
Traditional incandescent bulbs tend to have a low color temperature, which can produce an orange glow. A color temperature of 5,500 Kelvin (K) helps to replicate the appearance of natural daylight.
Read more about ring lights and color temperatures, and see some recommended ring lights at What ring lights do creators use? (With examples).
Some ring lights come with remote controls for dimming the LEDs or adjusting the color temperature. This makes it easier to operate the light when you are sitting away from the camera.
Also pay attention to the power options. Most ring lights are USB powered. If you intend to use your ring light outside the home, look for a light that has a built-in rechargeable battery.
Final thoughts on choosing the right size for a ring light
Each ring light should provide additional lighting to help you create clearer videos, but some sizes are better suited to specific situations.
A 10-inch ring light is good for close-ups. If you’re mainly filming makeup tutorials, you don’t need a light that can light up an entire room.
If you need to fill a room or outdoor space with light, consider an 18-inch ring light. The larger size helps illuminate a large area and more of the background.
Keep in mind that a larger ring light also offers more flexibility. Many ring lights are adjustable and dimmable, allowing you to lower the intensity of a larger light.
You can use a large 14″ or 18″ ring light in more situations than a smaller light.
The bottom line is that you might want to buy the biggest ring light you can afford. While you may only need close-up light for the moment, a larger light offers more versatility.

Tape (if your LED strip doesn’t have an adhesive backing)
These products are all readily available at hardware stores.
method
Once you have gathered your materials, follow these steps as shown in the video:
Fold the LED strip back on itself so that it lights up on both sides. If the strip doesn’t have its own adhesive backing, tape will hold it in place. Insert the LED strip into the drain hose. Attach white gaff tape to hold strip in place. Bend the hose into a ring shape and seal with white tape. Plug the LED strip into a nearby outlet. Hang the ring light on a camera and shoot.
Depending on your LED strip, you can experiment with different modes to create different lighting effects. Alternatively, you can change the footage during post-production.
3. Alternative tube/tube ring light
The Lighting Channel’s DIY ring of light is similar to the homemade ring of light that Sara Nguyen shared with her readers. Nguyen, also known as the Social Media Rocketeer, uses a PVC pipe and shoe mount in her design. She also uses self-mixing instant epoxy for strength. Check out her video on this variation:
4. Extended ring light
Professional photographer Jay Russell shared his DIY ring light tutorial on 500px. His is the most expensive and elaborate DIY ring light we mention. However, it also comes closest to a professional ring light. Russell estimates this project should cost between $50 and $100 depending on the material. Plan between one and three hours depending on your skills. Since this DIY job requires working with electricity, Russell recommends hiring an electrician for the build, or at least getting advice from one on the project. Their professional services naturally add to the overall cost.
materials
The materials required for the Jay Russell DIY Ring Light are:
Approximately 10 feet of 14 gauge household wiring
12 standard light sockets
24″x 24″ plywood (Russell used ¼″ fir but suggests 3/8″ wood would increase strength)
A light switch (Russell used a 600 watt dimmer switch, but any switch will do)
12 light bulbs (CFL or incandescent bulbs both work, although incandescent bulbs produce more heat. Russell used a 40 watt household bulb. Note that the wattage should not exceed the turn-on limit.)
A power cord
A small bag of wire connectors
cable ties
A bracket and spigot for attaching the light to a light stand
electrical tape
Electrical box
Tool
You will also need the following tools to mount the ring light:
A jigsaw puzzle
A drill
wire cutters and wire strippers
A screwdriver
Tongs
A box cutter
tape measure
A pencil
line
method
Follow these steps to assemble Russell’s ring light:
Measure your plywood and use the pencil to mark its center. Then put a mark 12 inches from the center. Attach the string to your pencil, anchor its free end to the center of your stick, and draw two concentric circles. The outer one should pass the 12 inch mark. Make sure the space between the two circles is wide enough to accommodate your lamp sockets. Cut out your circles with the jigsaw. Leave one corner of the outer circle intact to make room for the mounting bracket and switch. It should look like a teardrop with a circular hole in the middle. Mark 12 evenly spaced points on your wood form for the lamp sockets, then drill a hole at each mark. The hole should be large enough for four wires, so a 7/16″ bit is ideal. Cut 12 pairs of 8- to 10-inch black and white wires. Strip ¾ inch from the ends of each wire. Bend the bare wire ends into hooks with pliers. Thread wire through the holes. Both ends of each wire should be fed through adjacent holes. Each hole should have four wires: two black and two white. Cables in the lamp sockets. The white wires connect to the gold contacts on the lamp socket. The black wires connect to the silver contacts. Feed the wire clockwise onto the contacts to ensure the wire stays secure. Take the leftover white and black wire and wire them into your switch. Your switch should have instructions on how to do this. Use wire connectors to secure your wires and then glue them in place. Screw a lightbulb into your latest socket and test your work. Flicking your switch should turn your light off and on. If it doesn’t, unplug your light and check your wiring. Once you know your wiring is working, unplug your light and tie the wires in place. You can drill small holes in your mold for your zip ties. Cut off the tip of your teardrop. This creates a flat edge for your mounting bracket. Secure the switch and bracket with a zip. Set your ring light on a stand and screw in the bulbs. Plug in your ring light and test it out.
5. Alternative Enhanced Ring Light
Ashlynn C, the woman behind the Enjoying Simple blog, also posted a video showing her method of creating a ring light. Like Russell’s design, their design utilizes hardware solutions for durability. She reports that the light she makes in this video is still working two years after building it:
Ring lights can add value to your homemade movies, but they don’t have to cost a lot of money. If you’re on a budget, making a DIY ring light is an excellent lighting solution. Does a ring light hurt your eyes?
There is no indication of damage happening to the eyes during most ring light use. But there is some definite eye strain and possible headaches that can occur from the LED lights flickering quickly and the blue light that is emitted from them.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
If you’re a vlogger, photographer, or someone who likes to take professional-looking selfies, chances are you have a ring light that you use regularly. The high quality images and videos that a ring light can contribute to are amazing! Additionally, medical experts, makeup artists, and even tattoo artists use ring lights to perfect their craft. A ring light is versatile and easy to use. But before you take that next picture, ask yourself, “Are ring lights bad for your eyes?”
Can Ring Lights Harm Your Eyes?
When using a ring light for any type of video or image, it is placed directly in front of you to reduce shadows and brighten a person or object with light. Therefore, it is only natural to worry about the possible harm that could be done to your eyes with each use.
But are ring lights actually harmful to your eyes? The answer is no… and yes. There is no evidence of damage to the eyes during most ring light applications. But there is some eye strain and potential headaches that can come from the rapid flickering of the LED lights and the blue light they emit.
Do ring lights dazzle you?
Ring lights just keep getting better and safer over time. Beginnings with fluorescent lighting weren’t the safest, but most are now being made with LED bulbs, which can be dimmed to make them easier on the eyes. But no matter how you “look” at it, it’s still a bright light staring straight at you.
Staring at a bright light for a long time can overstimulate your retina, which can lead to injury. In addition, the bright blue flashing lights emit more energy, which can cause photothermal damage or increase the risk of age-related macular degeneration, causing vision loss in the middle part of the eye.
How do you use a ring light without hurting your eyes?
The best prevention to protect your eyes may include:
Keep your ring light out of your direct line of sight. If possible, move it to the side so you’re not looking directly at the light. Try to limit how often you use your ring light and how often your eyes are exposed to it. If possible, take breaks. Buy your ring light from a manufacturer you trust. Only then will you know that safety and quality were priorities during production.
While no studies directly examine the effects of ring lights on vision and vision, we also have no studies that say they are completely safe. Some damage can be immediate, while others take time, maybe years, to develop.
It is best to discuss any concerns you may have with your eye care professional, given your ring light and the frequency with which you use it. Are ring lights bad for your eyes? We will see. Do your part to keep your eyes healthy and safe by making an appointment for an eye exam today.
Are ring lights good for photography?
We know ring lights are a great tool for photographers, but are they good for product photography specifically? The simple answer is, yes! Ring lights are great for getting the perfect glow on whatever product you’re photographing.
Is A Ring Light Worth It
We know ring lights are a great tool for photographers, but are they specific to product photography? The simple answer is yes! Ring lights are great for getting that perfect glow on whatever product you’re photographing.
We’ll explore the reasons why you should get a ring light, some recommendations on what kind to buy, and how to set them up. Let’s start.
What is a ring light?
As the name suggests, a ring light is a circular light that is typically powered by LED or fluorescent lights. They are most commonly available in three generic sizes – 12-, 14-, and 18-inch.
A ring light is usually held by a stand that helps you place the light in the best position for the shot. The main benefit of a ring light is that you can stick your camera through the center, meaning your camera is right in the center of the light source. As a result, you get amazingly bright images that don’t suffer from any annoying shadows or glare.
Ring lights were originally made as a beauty product. Because the ring light produces an amazing range of natural-looking light, it’s considered the perfect prep beauty option.
Because there is such a wide range of ring lights to choose from, they have become a favorite lighting option for amateur and experienced photographers alike.
Why is a ring light good for product photography?
A ring light is perfect for product photography because you can set the light a certain distance from the products and create beautiful lighting that suits every shot.
Not only can you create amazing lighting with a ring light, but its circular design allows you to place your camera squarely in the center of the lighting, essentially eliminating any possibility of glare or shadows. This naturally softens the image, making it more aesthetically pleasing to the eye.
A ring light exposes every part of the product you’re photographing while still separating it from your chosen background. The result is sharp, bright images that really make the product stand out.
The sheer power of lighting on product photography aesthetics is amazing, and the best types of ring lights will capitalize on that fact to help you produce amazing product images.
Benefits of using a ring light
Below are some of the key benefits of using a ring light for your product photography.
Amazing close-up lighting
Eliminates stubborn or hard shadows
Pleasant lighting for the eye
Evenly distributed lighting
Soft light quality
Limits glare
Makes colors stand out
Where can you buy a ring light
A limited selection of ring lights are available at most furniture and general stores. However, if you want more choice, you might want to look around a photo store, or if there isn’t one online near you.
We have a few suggestions for you to check out. These range from very basic ring lights to much more advanced professional ring lights.
basic
The Emart 10″ Ring Light with Adjustable Tripod is the perfect choice for a beginner photographer looking to enhance their product photography with this exciting lighting method.
This model has eleven different brightness levels and three lighting modes so you can find the perfect lighting for your product photography. The only downside to this simple ring light model is that the ring itself is quite small – too small to place your camera in the center. This means images can be prone to glare or shadowing due to lighting not fully surrounding the lens.
Progressive
The Neewer Ring Light Kit is an excellent choice for the intermediate photographer who is willing to spend a little more to get that perfect product shot.
At 18 inches, this ring light is perfect for perfectly illuminated product shots, as there is plenty of space in the middle of the circle of light to place your camera. This means lighting can completely surround the camera lens, resulting in amazing shots with limited opportunities for glare and shadows.
Ring lights vary in price depending on whether you’re looking for a basic model or a more advanced one. They usually range anywhere from $25 to $200. As you can expect, the more you pay, the better the light gets. Higher priced models often feature more advanced technology and have more dimming options and offer better light control.
How to set up and use your ring light
Setting up and using your ring light is relatively easy and you can be up and running in minutes.
The first step is to remove all relevant equipment from the box and attach the ring light to the tripod that is usually provided. Your ring light comes with an instruction manual that explains how to set up that particular ring light. However, the basic process is usually the same.
You must screw the light onto the stand before testing the electrics by plugging in the light and turning it on. Check that the bulbs are fully functional and bright before attempting to use the ring light.
To take a picture with your ring light, you should aim your camera at the center of the light to ensure the lens is completely surrounded by light. Many professional ring lights come with a camera stand in the center of the circle that can be adjusted to fit your camera model. To use this, simply attach your camera to the stand according to the instruction manual, and you can then take amazing pictures and videos hands-free.
Some more modern versions of ring lights have Bluetooth technology, so you can easily take photos remotely without the need for a photo timer. You must verify that your device or camera has the appropriate Bluetooth technology required for setup.

Ring Light Definition What is a ring light? A ring light is a circular light that fits around a camera’s lens or is large enough to shoot through. A ring light ensures low-shadow illumination, since the origin of the light is very close to the optical axis of the lens. It is commonly referred to as glamor or beauty light. The main purpose of the ring lights is to cast an even light on the subject. This reduces shadows on the face and minimizes blemishes while making the eyes shine. Ring lights vs. LED Lighting: What’s the Difference?
Ring lights vs. LED lights. These aren’t actually two different types of lighting, but two different approaches to lighting depending on the type of photography you’re doing. By the way, both ring lights and LED lights are basically the same thing – they’re both LED lights. The only thing different is the shape. The term photography encompasses several different genres and subgenres. Portrait photography, for example, is an extremely popular genre and one of the key areas using these two types of lights.
What are ring lights?
The most obvious thing about ring lights is that they are shaped like a ring. They are the best when it comes to beauty shots. The ideal type of light to create flattering facial portraits of models wearing cosmetics or jewellery. Photographers love them, models too.
But what is so special about them? Form. Ring lights are shaped like a ring and this shape allows the light to evenly illuminate a face, usually from a straight angle. The top end ring lights like the Spectrum Aurora 19″ Gold Luxe II ring light come with a color temperature adjustment knob. A brilliant feature that allows you to adjust the color of the light to match others in the studio. This is useful when you are in a multi -Light setup work and/or if you need to match the color of your main light to the ambient light in the room.
Most professional devices, like the Spectrum Aurora 18″ Diamond Luxe III ring light, are battery operated. And that’s a big advantage when shooting outdoors. You can adjust the color temperature to mimic the light of the sun, or use it to reflect the sun to create an image that appears to have been captured entirely with natural light.
What are LED panel lights?
The term LED panel lights refers to a series of LED lights arranged on a panel base. This base could be rectangular or square depending on the specific purpose or utility of these area lighting systems. In addition, the number of LEDs in each LED panel lighting system can vary. The higher the number of LEDs, the higher the price of the unit.
Just like the ring lights we read about above, LED panel lights also have the ability to change color temperature. This allows you to seamlessly blend the light with natural sunlight or match the color temperature of the ambient light in a room.
Ring lights vs. LED panel lights
To reiterate, ring lights and LED lights are essentially the same. What makes them different is the shape of the lights and the panel design. Ring lights are a continuous smooth light shaped as a circle. Therefore, the shape of the light they produce is circular.
If you’re a portrait photographer, this light can serve two purposes. First as a key light that illuminates the model’s face. And second, where it’s not the key light but the catch light.
Catchlight creates this beautiful reflection of the source of the key light on the subject’s eyes. This can add a lot of value to your portrait photos.
LED panel lights are a real key light for portrait and other types of photography. However, ring lights can also be used for purposes other than portrait photography. You can use a ring light for product photography, vlogging (as a steady light), and so on.
LED panel lights are also very popular as continuous lights for video recording. If you’re looking for a decent permanent lighting kit for your home studio or professional setup, you might want to check out the Illuminate Wand Max 33-inch Vlogger and Photography Home Studio LED Lighting Kit.
The smaller 9 inch LED Photography Video Studio Lighting Set – 2x “Duo” Crystal Luxe is more useful for a small studio or home studio.
Used for ring lights
Ring lights are best used for photographing portraits. They are mainly used to capture the beautiful catchlights on a model’s eyes. But beyond that, ring lights are also useful for product photography and macro photography. In both product and macro photography, you work with a macro lens and get close to the subject to create a frame-filling image. When working with a short focal length lens, you need to get closer to the subject to fill the frame. This can, and often will, block out ambient light. A small ring light is the best solution to ensure proper exposure. A speedlight or strobe is out of the question in such a situation. When using the focus stacking technique, you also need a constant source of color-balanced light. A ring light is a good solution.
Used for LED panel lights
LED panel lights are also great for portraits, products, and macro. But the biggest downside of them is that unlike ring lights, you can’t shoot through them – a big plus for ring lights! LED panel lights are better suited as a key light for a portrait session, while ring lights serve as a catch light for the shoot.

Is A Ring Light Worth It
Wondering if a ring light is worth it?
You’ve come to the right place – today we’re going to explain why we think this is an essential investment.
Whether you’re a vlogger, looking to get into photography and videography, or even thinking about helping you apply makeup (for yourself or a client!), these will help you put together your best work.
There are so many different places to invest your money in your craft, so it’s fair to wonder if ring lights are worth it or not.
We explain exactly why we think these are worth their money and help you find the best one for you and your specific purpose!
What is a ring light good for?
We’ve mentioned a few instances where you should already be using a ring light – but these can all be summed up as one purpose these serve – to evenly illuminate a subject and eliminate shadows.
This is really important for a number of different instances. Anyone who uses a camera knows the importance of proper lighting. But that’s super difficult unless you have a ring light.
These are also very important for those who do makeup – either for themselves or for clients. With the best possible lighting, you can perfect detail and achieve absolute perfection.
You might consider using a ring light on yourself while filming a vlog or taking photos.
Or maybe you’re considering ring lights because you own a makeup salon and want to improve your ability to see your client’s fine details.
In any case, it is important to consider whether these actually make a difference or not.
Does a ring light make a difference?
So what makes ring lights different from any other type of light? Does a ring light really make a difference?
The answer is yes – these are specifically designed for this purpose! There are a couple of reasons they work so well.
First of all, the type of light used is optimized to be as close as possible to the natural light of the sun. This helps your facial features stand out and gives you a great natural look.
These are able to eliminate shadows and hide imperfections due to the circular nature of the light. It leads to a perfect diffusion and even spread over the subject.
Ask yourself how important the right light is for your work!
To really understand if a ring light is really worth it or not, just consider how important it is to achieve the perfect light.
If you’re interested in any of the careers we’ve touched on so far – portrait photography, videography, vlogging, lighting is all.
This is even true if all you really want to do is post the best possible selfie on social media or upload YouTube videos.
Anything involving a camera or makeup requires the right lighting – and the ring light is your golden ticket to perfection!
Is a cheap ring light worth it?
These aren’t always super budget-friendly — especially when you start looking at more premium options. This leads those shopping on a budget to wonder whether or not a cheap ring light is worth it.
Our advice is to avoid cheap options on the internet. We’ve heard nightmare stories of the LED diodes blowing out prematurely, meaning you’ll have to buy another one.
The end result is that you end up spending more than if you had invested in a better option to begin with.
Another downside to cheap ring lights is that they don’t always use the best light source. This results in the customer not being enthusiastic when setting up and the light is not as vivid.
So take it from us – if you buy one of these, we strongly encourage you to go for the best. You’re better off spending the money right away and never having to worry about it again.
Or you can take your chances and get the best when it inevitably fails you!
