If this all sounds like technical jargon, don’t worry. In the next few paragraphs, I’ll show you the differences between the two and how to properly measure the size of your toilet seat.

Are toilet seats universal?

Before we dive into the two main standard toilet seat sizes, there are a few general toilet standards that you should be aware of.

First, the distance between the two screws that hold your toilet seat to your toilet bowl is standard on almost all toilets, no matter what type of shape it is. These are called the seatpost holes and should be about 5.5 inches from the center of one hole to the other.

Secondly, the width of the toilet bowl is also usually the same regardless of the shape. If the width varies, it’s usually only by less than half an inch.

Now that we’ve covered those things, let’s explore the different types of toilet seats.

Elongated toilet seat

Oblong toilet seats are about 18.5 inches long and about 14 inches wide.

Since round toilet seats are a few inches smaller than oblong seats, they tend to be cheaper too, but not by much.

How to measure your toilet seat

Now that you know the standard sizes, you probably want to know how to find out what size toilet seat you have.

To make sure you get all the measurements you need before heading to the hardware store, measure these 3 things:

Length Width Seatpost Holes

Let us begin.

1. Length

This is by far the most important measurement. The other two are usually standard. So if you don’t want to go through the hassle of remembering three different numbers, just get these.

But I would advise you to measure the other two just to make sure you have a standard size seat.

To get this measurement, measure between the holes in the seat post to the end of your shell. Make sure you measure to the outside edge of your toilet bowl, or you’ll end up with a shorter measurement than you need to.

This will determine if you have an oblong bowl or a round bowl. Just for reference, oblong bowls will be around 18.5 inches, like the ones I measure in the photo above, and round bowls will be around 16.5 inches.

2. width

As I said, the width is usually standard, but to make sure you don’t have a really oddly large toilet, take that measurement anyway.

To get this measurement, simply measure around the widest part of your toilet bowl. Again, make sure you measure from outside edge to outside edge. Here is another picture to illustrate.

If you get a measurement that differs from the typical 14 inches, you may have a non-standard toilet seat, which I talk about in the next section.

3. Seat post holes

Lastly, you should measure your seatpost holes to ensure your toilet is a standard size.

For this measurement, measure from the center of one seatpost hole to the center of the other.

If you haven’t taken your toilet seat off, don’t worry, just try to center your measuring tool as best you can. Here’s a picture to show you what I mean, I didn’t take my seat off.

Your seatpost holes should measure 5.5 inches, and if that’s the case, all standard toilet seats, regardless of shape, will fit in your seatpost holes.

Non-standard toilet seats

So you’ve gone through all the steps and measured your toilet seat only to find out it’s not a standard size. What now?

Don’t worry, you can still replace your toilet seat if needed. It might just be a little harder to find the right seat. But first, let’s find out what a non-standard toilet seat is and why you might have one.

What is a non-standard toilet seat?

A non-standard toilet is anything but the standard sizes listed earlier in this article. Surprising I know.

They may be of an unusual shape or length, or have seatpost holes that are further apart or closer together than the standard 5.5″.

If you have different sized seatpost holes, you can get replacement toilet seat hinges that fit the different sized seatpost holes. This may also be cheaper than buying a dedicated toilet seat.

However, buying new hinges will not fix every situation. Sometimes you need to buy a custom made toilet seat. The type of seat depends on who is the manufacturer for your toilet.

Proprietary or OEM seats

You’re probably wondering, “Why are there non-standard sized toilet seats?”

Manufacturers are constantly trying new styles and designs to stay competitive and innovative. So they sell small batches of these new types and shapes of toilets to see if they have potential in the market.

These types of seats have two names. They are called either proprietary seats or Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) seats.

In either case, it is often difficult to find replacements for this type of seat and expensive to replace.

But all hope is not lost, many plumbing supply stores and hardware stores sell unusually shaped toilet seats at a cheaper price than direct from the manufacturer.

That way you know what type of seat you should get

If you have a non-standard size toilet seat and need a replacement, the first thing you need to do is find out who the manufacturer of your toilet is.

Most toilets have a logo or manufacturer’s name between the seat post holes. If your toilet doesn’t have this, take the toilet tank lid off and look for a manufacturer’s label. This is more common if you have a proprietary or OEM toilet.

If you can only find the logo between the seat posts, that’s fine. Measure your toilet and do one of two things. You can look online for places that sell your seat your size, or you can take it to your local hardware store and see if they can help you further.

If you can find a manufacturer’s label under your toilet tank cap, you should be able to check the manufacturer’s website for replacement parts.

European seats come in two similar styles as oblong and round seats, but they also have a D-shaped seat which is fairly common.
