Particularly problematic, adds Rudolf, is the use of the aerosol in children. Rudolf said parents tend to be more cautious about using the sprays on younger children, but she’s seen cases of abuse among teenagers.

Her recommendation: avoid it.

“These sprays should not be used by parents,” she said.

Could be toxic

The ingredients in these sprays can be problematic. While there are some relatively “natural” sprays on the market that contain ingredients like camphor and menthol, many others contain chloroethane, which was once widely used as a gasoline additive and can be toxic if used improperly.

“You have to keep it at least 30 centimeters away and not spray it on open wounds,” Imhoff said.

Rudolf also warned against misuse of the sprays.

“Unfortunately, I’ve seen it used on open wounds,” she said. This can cause skin burns and other irritation.

The chloroethane-based sprays, she adds, “can be very aggressive and should only be used in the hands of professionals.”

Pain is not a bad thing

The sprays are mainly used to combat pain resulting from a sports accident injury. “Freezing” the wound allows players to get back into the game. And that’s a big problem, doctors agree.

“You can get the cooling effect with an ice pack, but the sprays are colder and therefore more dangerous,” Imhoff said. “You want to heal the wound.”

Not only does the extra cooling help injured players get back to the game faster, but the more convenient logistics of spraying compared to holding an ice pack against your leg means players don’t have to sit out the remaining time.

This can lead to additional injuries because athletes are no longer aware of what is going on under their frozen skin.

Several drugstores in Germany carry cooling gels, but the sprays are easiest to find in pharmacies or online, where prices range from around two euros ($2.25) to 5 euros per 100ml.

From a business standpoint, ice spray sales are nominal and the market is “not very dynamic,” according to Christian Wieser, product manager at Deutsche Olbas. His company mainly sells to sports clubs and is also the official outfitter of the German national soccer team.

The figures he presented, which were collected by the marketing analysis company IH-Galaxy, showed annual fluctuations in sales from 2012 to 2014, depending on the brand.

But doctors believe the sprays are being used more frequently. Their availability, convenience, and unintended publicity when athletes use them at televised sporting events has led to their overuse, doctors say.

“A bag of ice water is better,” says Rudolf.
