The Miracles of Washing

Washing the glass before painting is a must, even if the glass looks perfectly clean, such as B. a brand new mason jar, fresh out of the box. Wash submersible glass items such as glasses, bottles or plates in warm water with a little washing-up liquid and wipe all surfaces with a dishcloth or sponge. Wash all of the glass, including areas you don’t want to paint, to remove dust and dirt. Sparkling clean solution

Some glass feels like it has a light film on it; even if yours doesn’t, wipe it down with rubbing alcohol to make it even more receptive to spray paint. The alcohol removes greasy films, soap scum and fingerprints that could otherwise hinder the painting process. Apply the alcohol with a soft cloth and let the glass dry completely before painting.

Spray paint perfection

Set up a project space in a well-ventilated area—outdoors, if possible, on a windless day. Cover the work area with newspaper or use a cardboard box as a makeshift spray booth. After shaking the spray can for a minute or two, spray the glass, starting each stream of paint just ahead of the object and ending slightly behind, holding the spray can 12 to 18 inches from the project. While it may be tempting to apply one thick coat rather than several thin coats, thin coats adhere better and help prevent drips and paint splatters. If you are painting a glass, bowl, bottle, or other glass vessel, place the object upside down on the project surface to paint so that the paint completely covers the bottom visible edge of the object once the paint has dried. If you intend to use the glassware for food or drink, keep the paint away from the rim of the glass and any areas that will come into contact with food or drink. Wash the item with soft cloths or sponges only; Scouring pads or the dishwasher can remove the color.

Problems spray painting glass

Glassware is probably the most difficult material to spray paint with. Due to the smooth surface, it is more likely to run, drip or peel. The smooth surface of glass doesn’t give the color much to grab and hold on to. Therefore, the paint easily accumulates on itself, causing cracks, drips and runs.

For this reason, many prefer to paint glass with a brush, which leads to many brush strokes on the previously very smooth surface. (I mention this tip in my free checklist to help you spray paint like a pro. You can get it by filling out the form at the bottom of this post).

I don’t know about you, but when I take the time to hand paint something I want it to look good!

That’s why using the right spray paint is so important!

What spray paint sticks to glass?

Spray paint quality can vary greatly from one product line to another and some are easier to use on glass than others. Also, certain nozzles are better at providing an even spray, which is critical for spraying glassware.

Considerations on the best spray paints for glass

There are several considerations to keep in mind when reviewing and deciding on the best spray paints for glassware.

Dripping – Dripping is the bain of my existence in every painting project. Those dreaded drops can ruin a perfect vase in an instant. As I mentioned above, glass is more prone to drips because it’s so smooth and slick. However, using the right spray paint can ensure you get the perfect finish every time. What affects smoothness is the quality of the paint and the type of nozzle.

Bumps – Even if you don’t have drips, sometimes the type of nozzle can cause paint to come out unevenly. Or it can result in spray paint particles that are too large and not appear smooth on the surface of your glass.

Shine – Think about the shine you are aiming for. For example, if you’re painting faux frosted glass you want a high gloss gloss, and if you want the look of chalk paint you want a very matte gloss.

Drying Time – You want a short drying time so that dust doesn’t land on your newly painted surface as often.

Price – The spray paints I recommend in this post are all $5-7. There are cheaper aerosol cans available, but they don’t give the desired results on glass.

What is the best spray paint for glass?

Several different spray paints work great on glass, depending on the look you want. But the same line that’s great for metallic paints isn’t great for tints, so I’ve listed the best spray paints for glass based on the look you want!

Best Spray Paint for Glass: Waterproof stained glass paint

Sometimes you want to spray mason jars or glassware with a translucent tint instead of a solid or opaque frosted color. The perfect spray paint for this is Krylon’s Stained Glass Spray Paint (see current price here).

This product is fabulous and I was able to achieve a beautiful blue hue on mason jars that now look like vintage antiques! It’s very light, so it’ll probably need multiple coats if you want a deep tint. Luckily, this is the most important attribute of spray painting glass – light, even coats!

I love these old blue mason jars that are now a staple in my white stall that used to be my grandma’s.

Best Spray Paint for Glass and Ceramics: Frosted glass spray paint

If you love the look of frosted glass, you can achieve the same look by spray painting glassware and ceramics with a high gloss white spray paint.

The best white spray paint for glass

There are several white gloss spray paints on the market, but white glass spray paint needs to be sprayed evenly with a short drying time. White spray paint will show blemishes and imperfections much more than darker colors. For that reason, this is my go-to faux frosted glass: Rustoleum Universal Gloss in White

Not only does this brand spray a light, even coat, but the nozzle is the best type for even coverage to avoid drips and running – especially since glossy paints are most prone.

REMEMBER: Simply spray light coats of this spray paint about 15 minutes apart. You will be tempted to cover the first or second layer completely, but go very lightly to avoid drips!

I spray painted these birds to make them look like white ceramic or porcelain. It’s hard to believe they were bright orange and green before I painted them!

Best Spray Paint for Glassware: Chalk-Painted Look

If you love the look of chalk painted and aged mason jars, there’s a clear option: Rustoleum Chalked Spray Paint. I love this spray paint because it has a really nice matte chalk finish that sticks to the glass really well. Plus, it’s easy to sand without peeling off to create a distressed look.

To get the distressed look, spray paint your glass or glassware in several light coats. After it has dried for at least 24 hours, take a high grit sandpaper and sand down the areas you want to appear worn. I show you the whole process in the video here: How to Paint Mason Jars

Best Spray Paint for Glass: Frosted glass spray paint

If you want to make a clear glass vase or jar opaque, you can easily do that with: Rustoleum Frosted Glass Spray Paint.

This color has given me a flawless finish time and time again. This product gives you many great opportunities for DIY projects, including making lanterns out of jars or even making a bathroom window opaque.

Simply spray the glassware in very thin coats and mask off any areas you do not wish to paint. Allow to dry for 24 hours before using. Rustoleum’s Frosted Glass Spray is the best on the market, giving you an even finish every time.

Best Spray Paint for Glass: Sea Glass Finish

There are spray paints on the market specifically designed for a sea glass finish – one product in particular. But after three doses of the same product, I couldn’t get an even finish. The paint spattered and pooled all over my vases no matter how hard I shook the can!

But I found an alternative way to create a sea glass effect that is flawless every time. You will need a few cans of spray paint for this. First, spray on Krylon’s Stained Glass (NOT Krylon’s Sea Glass) in a few thin coats or to desired depth of color.

Then, after you’ve sprayed on your last coat of Krylon’s Stained Glass for about 20 minutes, spray on a coat or two of Rustoleum’s Frosted Glass. The difference between stained glass optics and sea glass optics is that sea glass is more opaque. So we just add a frosted finish to stained glass to create a sea glass effect.

Yes, I know you’ll need to buy another can of spray paint, but I assure you, it gives you a beautiful, even seaglass finish on glass every time! You can see the process in detail in the video above.

Below is how I spray painted a vase with Krylon’s Summer Green Stained Glass Spray Paint and Rustoleum’s Frosted Glass. I also made a candle holder out of a mason jar by spraying it with Krylon’s Soft Blue Stained Glass Spray Paint and then Rustoleum’s Frosted Glass Spray Paint.

Metallic spray paints are plentiful at any local hardware store, but they’re not all created equal. I’ve tested several different brands and Rustoleum’s metallic spray paints always seem to come out on top. Here are my favorites for each shade:

How to spray glass

“How do you paint glass permanently?”

Using the right spray paint is key, but you also want to use the right spray painting method to ensure a smooth, even finish on your glassware.

To spray any type of glass, ceramic, or porcelain, wipe the surface with rubbing alcohol to remove any dirt or glue on the surface of the glass that would prevent the paint from adhering.

After the alcohol has dried, shake the spray can for about a minute. You can start by spraying the glass in light layers, 15 minutes apart.

How to spray glass without drips

IMPORTANT TIP: For the first layer you will be tempted to get full coverage, but don’t! This is a recipe for drops.

Just put on a very light coat and know that it will be translucent and blotchy. Spray light coats 15-20 minutes apart until you get full coverage. How to fix spray paint on glass

If you’re wondering how to fix paint splatter on glass, you’ve come to the right place! As soon as you start seeing a drip or run shape, stop spraying that layer.

While the paint is wet, take a small art brush and simply brush out the drip with one quick stroke. It may leave some brush marks on the surface, but you’ll cover them with next coats of spray paint.

Allow the current layer to dry for 15-20 minutes and continue with your additional layers, shaking the can before each one.

The real reason I use Rustoleum spray paint on glass

You may have noticed that I mainly use Rustoleum products when it comes to spray painting glass. That’s because I’ve personally seen more consistency in their products in terms of even spraying, which makes their spray paints really easy to use.

What about Krylon Glass Spray Paint?

Although I usually prefer Rustoleum spray paint to Krylon for glass, I really like their stained glass color. It’s an amazing product whether you’re creating a tinted effect or a sea glass finish on glassware. You can also control the color depth by how many coats you spray. RENOVATE YOUR FAITH: Broken but redeemed

Jen Wilkin, in her book In His Image, writes about the time she saw a beautiful green vase at a thrift store. Because she loved the details of the vase and green is her favorite color, she bought it for $10. She was so excited about her new find and after turning it over she saw that the name McCoy was printed on the bottom. After doing a little research, she found out that her green vase was actually worth four times what she paid for. But Jen loved her vase above all for its beauty and loved the idea of ​​placing flowers from her garden in it – form and function in harmony. Jen’s children were all little about 15 years ago when one fateful day the vase she loved so much fell on the tiles and broke. She managed to put it back together with super glue, but the time it held water was over. The closer you get to it, the easier it is to see the cracks in the finish. Is there waterproof spray paint for glass?

If you need spray paint for a glass vase, all of the above spray paints are permanent and can withstand some water. For example, I accidentally left one of the mason jars out in the rain overnight and the stained glass spray finish looked great even though it had only been painted less than 24 hours ago.

Is spray paint dishwasher safe?

I wouldn’t say spray painted glassware is dishwasher safe because the paint can’t withstand the rapid changes in temperature. Also, you probably don’t want spray-painted items in your dishwasher with dishes you eat from anyway.

Can you spray glass candle holders and glass candle holders?

How do you fix spray paint on glass?

There are a few ways to do this. If you notice a drop shape when spray painting glassware, stop spray painting and quickly brush off the drop with a small art brush in one go.

You will have some brush strokes in your finish but allow the paint to dry for 15-20 minutes before moving on to the next coat. The next layer evens out the brush strokes. Continue spray painting as usual.

Another option is to let the spray paint dry for 48 hours and sand it down very lightly by hand. Once you’ve sanded down the drips or runs, you can spray them again.

Can you spray paint a glass chandelier?

You can absolutely spray paint a glass chandelier, although it can be a challenge depending on how detailed the glass is. I would recommend taking the glass crystals off and hanging them by a long string or piece of twine between a couple of ladders over a lawn.

Can you spray paint for glass windows?

You can spray glass windows to give them an opaque or frosted effect. If you choose this route, be sure to tape and cover the entire area to prevent spray paint particles from sticking to nearby surfaces. Another simpler option is window film, which you can find here: Privacy Window Film

Can you spray paint a glass table top?

You can use any of the above spray paints to paint a glass table top, but I would recommend spraying the side that will be in contact with the table. This way you don’t risk scratching a spray painted surface. To do this, spray one side of the glass and leave to dry for 48 hours.

Then use these glass spacers (check current price here) to easily separate the glass from the table. I learned from my DIY Made Out of a Door desk that if you don’t use the spacers, the glass creaks against the tabletop every time you lean on it.

How to paint tempered glass

You can paint tempered glass just like regular glass. Just make sure you cover it with very light layers as you can see in this video: How to Spray Glass

What is the best translucent spray paint for glass?

If you are doing a craft or DIY project where you need a translucent spray paint for glass, I would go with Rustoleum’s clear coats. You can click the link for the best shine for your project. Translucent luster for glass can be gloss, semi-gloss, satin and matte depending on how glossy you want it. The flatter shimmers could also appear more opaque on glass.

Mother’s Day is an important day in our house. I think it’s important to show mom that she’s appreciated and loved, and this year we wanted to do something special.

My wife had been indicating for some time that she would like to have some sort of souvenir of our son’s handprints to keep for posterity.

After researching all kinds of craft projects, from paintings to pottery, I decided on a fun paint-your-plate project I found on Pinterest.

The project was easy to complete and I thought it might be helpful to do a quick tutorial on how my son and I made this project for others to make their own!

Tools needed for your painted handprint plate

Creating your handprint plate isn’t too difficult as long as you have the right tools to get the job done.

The following tools and materials should work with this craft. You should be able to find most of the following items at your local Michael’s store or on Amazon using the links below.

I ended up having to modify the tools used a bit as the Michael’s shop I went to didn’t stock the Porcelaine 150 colors. I ended up using Martha Stewart glass paints. I was told by a store clerk that they should work roughly the same as the Porcelaine 150, and they did. They just had slightly different baking instructions to harden the paint.

All in all, I spent about $20 on all materials, mostly paint and brushes.

Creation of your handprint plate

Now the fun part, actually creating your handprint plate.

You want to create a beautiful workspace that gives you plenty of space to work while also having all your materials within easy reach.

do the lettering

I started my project by painting the letters on the top of the panel. I drew the letters first by writing them in pencil to make sure they would fit.

Next, after writing the words in pencil, I used my glass paint to write the letters. The colors I used had a nice tip for outlining in color and that worked pretty well for writing the letters. They were a bit thick when I finished but they looked decent. If I were to do it again I’d probably use a paint marker (linked above) for the lettering instead.

After writing the letters, I decided to let the paint dry overnight before getting my son’s handprints on the plate. I didn’t want him to smudge the letters that took so long to get right. If you like, you can do the handprints first, then the lettering and the rest of the design.

Placing the handprints

The next step in the project was to put my son’s painted handprints on the center of the plate. This part of the project took a few tries, especially with a fidgety 4-year-old.

First, I squeezed the purple color onto a plate and dabbed it evenly onto my foam brush. I then applied a thin coat of paint to my son’s hand.

Be careful not to use too much paint. If you do this, the actual handprints in the design may smudge or be less visible.

After the paint was applied to my son’s hand, I had him gently press his hand onto the plate while I pressed all of his fingers and the middle of his hand down. Make sure you know exactly where you want the hand to go before you place the hand and press down.

Next, I had him raise his hand straight up without smudging. The first hand took two tries and I had to use a towel to clean the smudged handprint from the first try.

After the first hand was done, I wiped his fingers clean with a damp cloth and repeated the same steps on the second hand. After he was done, I had him wash his hands thoroughly.

After the handprints were on the plate, I made a slight outline of the prints using the same color. You can skip this step if you wish.

Completion of the design

After the text and handprints were down I proceeded to complete the handprint flowers by painting the flower stem and leaves.

Using a small brush and green paint, I freehand painted the stem and leaves after applying a pencil outline.

The color wasn’t mixed very well the first time so the color was too thin and started running down the sides of the plate. I wiped everything off and gave it another shot after remixing the paint. This time it lasted and looked pretty decent.

Make your design permanent – bake it!

With the design complete, it was time to make it permanent.

First you need to let the paint dry for 1 hour. After drying, it’s time to bake the porcelain paint to harden it.

Place the plate in a cool oven, preheat to 300°F.

When the oven reaches 300°F, bake the sheet for 35 minutes.

Turn off the oven and allow the oven to cool down with the plate inside.

Since the paint I used was slightly different, I had to heat the slab to 350F for 30 minutes, but essentially the same instructions.

Once the sheet has cooled in the oven you can remove it and your color should now be permanent and dishwasher safe.

My paint was actually cured and felt like ceramic or glass. The green color actually looks like translucent green glass. Very pretty.

Simple project that will be greatly appreciated

Once the project is complete your plate will look amazing and I’m sure it will be greatly appreciated by the recipient. I know my wife loved the gift when we gave it to her on Mother’s Day!

The only problem we had was keeping it a secret as my son loves to tell his mom everything. But this time he did well. He only revealed that there was a “secret gift” for mom!

Can you spray paint ceramic items like planters?

Yes, you can spray paint ceramics like the Italian style glazed ceramic planter shown below or other ceramic items. Spray paint comes in many formulas and gloss levels, giving you many options to choose from in addition to color.

What color adheres to glazed ceramic?

Paint will stick to glazed pottery as long as you prepare the piece before painting. With proper preparation, any color will hold up after these spray painting steps.

Sand the surface with 100 grit sandpaper to roughen the surface to give the primer and paint some adhesion. Wash and let dry. Use a spray primer first or use a Primer+Paint spray paint formula in one. Shake the can well and apply a thin layer. Let dry. Next, shake the spray can and apply an even coat, let dry about 5-8 minutes and then apply another light coat, let dry. If you are using a gloss or semi-gloss paint, no sealer is required. If you wish to seal your item, use Minwax Polycrylic in a spray formula.

What kind of paint do you use on ceramics?

To get a nice smooth and evenly painted finish when painting ceramic, it’s best to use spray paint. Brush color shows brush strokes and the finish and layers look uneven.

Choose spray paint in gloss or semi-gloss finishes. Most major spray paint brands such as Rustoleum, Krylon, Valspar, and others are available in all gloss finishes.

With a can of spray primer, spray paint, or a combination of both in one spray paint, all you need and a drop cloth is like flattened cardboard to transform an item.

If you don’t have spray paint handy, you can find and order it from many online retailers that will ship right to your door, from Amazon, Home Depot, Lowes, Walmart, Target, and Michaels.

When spray painting an item here are a few simple steps to ensure you get a very smooth finish no matter what brand of spray paint and primer you use.

How to spray a glazed or ceramic item

Supplies are needed:

Spray primer, spray paint, or paint + primer in a spray paint formula

100 grit sandpaper

Time needed: 10 minutes. How to paint glazed or ceramic items How should you prepare before painting a glazed or ceramic item?

To prepare the surface for spray paint on a glazed or ceramic item, first go over the entire surface of the item with 100-grit sandpaper.

Use enough pressure to remove some of the shine, but not too hard to leave deep scratch marks.

Clean the surface well

Clean the sanded surface well with hot water and dish soap to remove abrasive grains and dirt or grease. Rinse well, let dry. cover areas

If you don’t want certain areas painted, mask them off with painter’s tape and scrap paper.

Place the item to be painted on a flattened box

To make spray painting easier, place the item on a piece of rigid cardboard, like a flattened cardboard box out on your lawn. This acts as a turntable to make it easier to rotate the item on your work surface or even on the floor. You can rotate the box with one hand and spray the paint with the other hand, being careful to reach all sides and parts of the item when spraying. Start spraying the paint

Always wear a face mask that covers your mouth and nose to protect you from inhaling the fumes.

Each spray paint has instructions on the can that you must follow, and you should read them to ensure all painting conditions are met – like outside temperature, humidity, etc.

Shake the can well for at least a minute. Then begin spraying the surface from about 8 inches away. Use sweeping motions to get a first light top coat. Wait 3 minutes and then repeat the process adding another light layer. Wait another 3-5 minutes and repeat the process, spraying on another thin coat to ensure the entire surface is covered.

IMPORTANT: You must apply all coats of spray paint in the first hour. If this is not possible, wait 48 hours and then apply a remaining coat of color for full coverage. If you don’t wait and spray another coat after the first hour, the paint may crease and ruin the finish. How long does it take for spray painted ceramic to dry?

After your item is covered, bring it in on the box and leave it in a garage or least-used room in your home overnight. Depending on the heat and humidity, the piece will take approximately 8-24 hours to fully dry.

Which spray paint is best for painting glazed or ceramic items?

To paint the already glazed surface on the terracotta planter, I used a spray paint left over from a previous project I had in my garage. I knew I had to use a primer as a base coat, but after the primer dried the new white semi-matte finish was just what I wanted. I didn’t even have to add a final coat of matte white paint.

I used Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch Multipurpose Spray Paint, white primer

I have used all different brands and formulas of spray paint for over 35 years and I love this Rust-Oleum Painter’s Touch 2x Ultra Cover spray paint range. It is available in a primer as well as many colors and glosses. It’s the best for any surface, not just ceramic. It goes on quickly with even coverage and dries quickly. When buying a can of spray paint for a project, this is my favorite.

This article focuses on food contact paints that can be used on household items such as tabletops, serving trays (or boards), high chairs, countertops, and decorative bowls.

We cannot find any colors officially tested by the FDA for these applications. That’s because most paints meet food safety requirements.

Most paints will not leach chemicals once fully cured. Water-based and solvent-based paints do not expose to bisphenols (only epoxy paints dissolve bisphenols), phthalates (found in sealants but not paints) or lead (the key ingredient that made some paints unsuitable for food contact in the past). .

Does this mean that any paint can be used on food contact surfaces? It depends on how you use the item, but I would say no.

We’re going to go further on metal leaching to get started. Lead is not the only metal of concern, many paints today contain toxic metals. We screen paints against a Toy Safe certification, which tests for metal leaching (as if you accidentally ingested the paint).

I will also use the FDA’s list of approved ingredients to verify colors.

The list of colors in this article prioritizes brands with very low or no VOC content. However, if you have used a fully cured solvent based paint that can be safe too, it just takes longer to cure and is not non-toxic for some time.

Whether a paint is food safe really depends on how you use it. We’re focusing here on objects like tables and trays that you might place food on or have occasional contact with. The items are not placed in the dishwasher, the items are not bowls from which you eat liquid foods, and they are not items that go directly into your mouth. I personally would not use paint on a cutting board as no paint is suitable for regular ingestion.

The article includes my top nine brands of paint that I would use in food contact areas, ranging from 100% natural options to the healthiest acrylic paint brands to some harsher, more conventional options.

There are three main rules we will use to determine if a paint or coating is food grade or food safe.

To clarify the terms, food grade refers to the material and food grade refers to the product being safe under the actual conditions in which the material will be used.

The FDA states in 117.40 in Subpart B, “Food contact surfaces must be made of nontoxic materials and constructed to withstand the environment of their intended use and exposure to food and, where appropriate, detergents, disinfectants, and cleaning procedures.”

Regulations we will take into account:

1. FDA Title 21, Section 175.300

Section 175:300 lists permitted ingredients for resin and polymer coatings. Paints can be tested to this regulation (extraction testing) or certified by a third party, or the company can provide a signed guarantee statement that they meet the requirements. Unfortunately, most paints do not have these official documents. For those that don’t, we can use the list of approved ingredients in 175:300 to see if a product is likely to fall under this regulation.

Paints used in the home, table tops, high chairs and other consumer goods are not officially tested.

(We should note that this is not the only paint ingredient safety regulation in the US, there may also be national and state laws such as California Prop 65 that apply to ingredients in coatings).

2. FDA Title 21, Section 174

Section 174 lists ingredients that are considered GRAS (Generally Recognized as Safe) for their intended use. For example, carnauba wax, a component of many wax coatings, is GRAS and is therefore considered safe in coatings.

3. Toy safety standard EN 71:2019

This is a European standard, but there are a number of certified brands that also sell their products in North America, so this has proven to be a useful specification for the colors in this article.

This tests for the leaching of toxic elements such as aluminum, antimony, arsenic, barium, boron, cadmium, chromium (III), chromium (VI), cobalt, copper, lead, manganese, mercury, nickel, selenium, strontium, tin, organic tin and zinc.

This standard simulates the leaching of metals in the stomach, as if the paint were being ingested by a child.

There are no equivalent tests in North America, so it’s good that we have some brands that are available in North America tested in Europe.

paint curing times

The last thing we want to keep in mind before looking at the best brands is how long it takes to cure. The paint should be fully cured before we use it on food contact areas.

Water-based, zero-VOC paints generally take two weeks to cure until no more outgassing of chemicals occurs. Be sure to check the time frame based on when you can start wiping the paint off or when the company says it’s food contact safe. With solvent-based paints, it takes longer for the solvents to flash off. At least a month is required for these colors before you should paint them with food. I can often pick up outgassing from solvent based paints for more than a month.

Food grade/food contact paints

1. Milk color

Milk paint, when in powder form, is an all-natural, non-toxic wood finish that is labeled food safe.

You can use this on a table or on children’s toys. To make it last you need to add a (food safe) sealant, oil or wax.

The Real Milk Company does not use clay in the formula, so there is no risk of possible metal contamination. The pigments are titanium dioxide (the white pigment in every color) and iron oxides. The green contains chromium(III) which probably would not make it toy safe by European standards (depending on the real world washability and durability of the topcoat). The top coat may provide adequate protection, but their colors are not tested with or without a top coat.

Old Fashioned Milk Paint has tested its product in Europe according to the Toy Safe Standard EN-71. Not all colors passed the metal leaching tests (white and blue failed). The following colors are certified safe: Scarlett (Red), Marigold Yellow, Mustard, Pumpkin, Salem Red, Barn Red, Bayberry Green, Tavern Green, Lexington (Deep Green), and Jet Black.

Food safe top coats for milk paint

For toys, tables, trays and wooden worktops you will definitely want to use a (food safe) sealer as a top coat to make them durable.

Tung oil is the most durable of the food grade penetrating oils (just make sure you use the food grade citrus solvent and give it the full 30 days to cure). On heavily trafficked surfaces you may need to recoat lightly every year (outside) or every two years (inside).

Hemp oil and walnut oil (also called wood wax) are not quite as waterproof, but they are also food safe and do not require a solvent.

Topcoats certified for toy safety include: AFM Safecoat Acriglaze (matte finish), AFM Naturals Oil-Wax or, for outdoor items, AFM Naturals Clear Penetrating Oil.

Application: Ideal on untreated wood, terracotta, concrete. Inside and out with the right top coat.

Applications: trays, tables, desks, high chairs, wooden worktops, concrete worktops, concrete and terracotta pots (more information here) and presentation bowls, planters (more information here), sausage boards, toys.

2. Natural linseed oil paint

Allbäck colors are made from food-safe linseed oil with a manganese dryer. Manganese is allowed in food contact coatings by the FDA but not by Toy Safe regulations in Europe. (i.e. this would likely pass FDA testing but not Toy Safe Test).

The Allbäck linseed oil paint is very durable and is therefore well suited for table tops and other heavily used areas. The paint stays somewhat flexible so doesn’t dry hard like an enamel. It leaves a flat look.

Paint brands Viking and Ottosson use a natural dryer, but the company hasn’t said it’s definitely manganese. Ideally you want to know what metal/mineral is used as a dryer.

Pigments like chrome in some brands would not leave this toy safe either.

Use on: Almost any clean and dry surface except silicone. You can use it on wood, concrete, sheet metal, iron and plastic. interior and exterior surfaces.

Applications: trays made of wood, metal or melamine; furniture made of wood, metal or melamine, including table tops and high chairs; worktops made of wood, concrete or laminate; cake stand (if you are not slicing on the stand); toys and playsets excluding toys that fit in a child’s mouth; the exterior of mason jars and lids; the exterior of metal food storage containers; Terracotta pots (more information here) and plant boxes for outdoor use (more information here).

3. AFM Safecoat Paints & Primers – Low VOC Acrylic

AFM MetalCoat is a primer for metal. This can be followed by all AFM colors.

They are not officially approved by the FDA as food safe through testing, but once fully cured and safe from the dishwasher, they are considered safe based on their ingredients.

This paint is low VOC and can be used indoors or outdoors on bare metal. It can be used on galvanized steel, aluminum and all non-ferrous metals.

For abrasion resistance on outdoor tables a combination of paint and seal would work well: AFM Safecoat All Purpose Exterior Satin and then AFM Safecoat EXT Exterior Polyureseal.

AFM Transitional Primer is used when overcoating an oil based paint.

Use on: MetalCoat for bare metal. General purpose for wood or previously painted surfaces. EXT as a clear sealer over water-based paint. interior and exterior surfaces.

Applications: MetalCoat for: metal food containers, display dishes, mason jar lids, uncoated metal playsets. All Purpose Paint + EXT for table tops.

4. ECOS Paint – VOC Free Acrylic

A VOC-free, water-based paint that is non-toxic once dry and can be used on tables and toys.

ECOS Paints is a VOC-free acrylic (latex) paint that is considered food safe, although not FDA approved as it has not undergone the testing.

But they are EN-71 certified (Europe) for use on children’s toys that could be put in a child’s mouth.

Acrylic latex paint in a semi-gloss or gloss finish is a good choice for tabletops and other furniture. Both wipe off easily with soap and water and are safe to eat on once they have set.

They also make primers, including a primer for previously painted metal, and exterior applications.

Use on: wood, surfaces previously coated with water-based paint. interior and exterior surfaces.

Applications: Tables, Desks, High Chairs, Cots, Serving Trays, Toys, Playground Equipment/Playsets.

5. Chalk paint + clear coat

Chalk Paint is a super low odor, non-toxic paint that sticks to almost any surface. The paint itself is certified toy safe (EN-71-3) but needs a top coat to be durable.

If you’re painting a dining table, high chair, or other piece of furniture (and most toys too), you can add a clear chalk varnish to make it super durable. This is a water based polyacrylic clear coat that is certified toy safe (EN 71-3:2013) and is safe to use on toys and furniture such as dining tables. Both the matte and glossy finishes are durable. It applies perfectly clear and dries quickly without yellowing over time.

Use on: Chalk paint will stick to wood, metal, glass, ceramics, most plastics, cardboard, terracotta, concrete, shellac and previously painted materials (with water or oil based paint). interior projects.

Applications: Jars and vases (such as mason jars), metal storage containers, display trays, tables, desks, melamine furniture, high chairs, cots, toys, serving trays (metal, plastic, wood or melamine), playsets.

In North America you want to search for chalk paint retailers.

6. Farrow and Ball

Farrow & Ball extremely low odor water-based paint meets toy safety standards. Their Estate Emulsion, Estate Eggshell, Modern Emulsion, Modern Eggshell, Exterior Eggshell and Full Gloss have been independently tested and approved to meet toy paint regulations.

Not all of their color shinies would be durable enough for furniture. They recommend Modern Eggshell (40% gloss) for most furniture such as dressers and cots, table tops, serving trays and high chairs. It is sturdy, washable and wipeable.

Use on: With the right primer you can use Farrow and Ball products on new wood, previously painted wood, ferrous and non-ferrous metal (except cast iron). They have interior and exterior colors.

Applications: cribs, dressers, tables, serving trays, high chairs, wooden or pre-painted toys.

7. Rustoleum 8400 Food & Beverage Alkyd Paint

This interior enamel paint is suitable for food and beverage applications due to its washability. Enamel paints (alkyd paints) are much more durable than latex paints. Technically, it’s for incidental food contact only.

The 8400 Food and Beverage System meets USDA FSIS regulatory sanitation performance standards for food facilities.

This is a little different than FDA Title 21, which addresses ingredients in paint that come in direct contact with food. The USDA examines cleanability to ensure that “the floors, walls, and ceilings… [are] smooth and easy to clean” so that bacteria do not build up and that the ceiling finishes are intact. USDA compliant systems must withstand intended use in a specific process area. (Source)

Because it is a permanent enamel coating, it can meet these regulations.

However, there is a Prop 65 warning on it.

This is quite high in VOCs at <450g/L. It's a solvent based paint so it's very smelly at first and it certainly takes some time to fully degas. The main solvent is petroleum. I wouldn't normally recommend solvent based paints on my blog, but I mention this one because it meets USDA regulations. Application on: metal, wood. Applications: Equipment, structural steel, pipe, metal cabinets and lockers, railings, trim, doors and gates, air vents and more, occasional food contact applications - such as a tray or cake stand not used to directly support baked goods. This color is only available in white and yellow. But the 2500 series is similar and comes in more colors. Buy through Amazon, Grainger and Menards. Other enamel paints (alkyd paints): Benjamin Moore has stated that ADVANCE is not food safe. 8. Rustoleum Painter's Choice (Brushes) A water-based paint for indoor and outdoor projects, Painter's Choice brush paint is certified toy safe (EN71-3: 2019, Europe). The following colors are not certified as toy safe: Gold, Antique Gold, Bronze and Old Penny Bronze. (Even the metallics contain solvents, oil paint). It's called Painter's Touch Multipurpose Paint in the UK and Painter's Touch Ultra Cover in the US. With <250 g/l for the water-based version, this paint is not low in VOC. (The solvents are water and glycol ether). The data sheets describe the odor as solvent-like. The company recommends a full cure time of one week for toys. Based on my testing of the spray paint version, I'd say it takes at least two weeks to cure. Even after a month I could detect slight outgassing. This is not a paint I would normally use or recommend as I wouldn't consider it low toxic or non toxic but once given adequate time to cure I would consider it perfectly safe for everyday use. Use on: wood, metal, plaster, masonry and unglazed ceramics. Applications: Toys and children's furniture, table tops, crafts, vases, baskets, occasional food contact applications such as a serving tray or cake stand that do not have direct contact with the food. Buy through Amazon, Walmart and Home Depot. Other Metallic Paints: I don't think metallic paints can meet toy safety standards (and therefore food safe in my opinion) as metals are required to make the paints. If the tray or cake stand is only used for display with no direct contact between the food and the surface, you can try applying a clear coat over a metallic paint like Rustoleum Stops Rust, which is a solvent-based acrylic that can be overcoated in a water-based one polyurethane. 9. Facolite color Fakolith is a European company that produces food grade paints and varnishes, tested and certified for direct, indirect and occasional contact with food, beverages and drinking water according to European regulation EU 10/2011 and/or American regulation FDA 21 CFR 175,300. They make various products including clear sealers, acrylic paints and a food grade epoxy paint. Applications: Protection of surfaces such as food and beverage silos, tanks, pipes, fish farms, transport elements, printed food packaging, trays and rinds, as well as walls, ceilings, floors, sandwich panels, cold stores, clean rooms and installations and objects in general in all areas of the food industry. Food contact safe sealants for overcoating You might consider sealing your painted surface with a food safe coating to add an extra layer of protection. 1. Epoxy coating Epoxy coatings are thick and form a very good barrier between the paint and you. However, epoxy generally contains bisphenols (like BPA). This may still be considered safe for food contact by the FDA, although not always by state regulations. I don't generally talk about epoxies on this site as they are very odorous when wet. The two parts must come together and undergo a chemical reaction. While it's still setting, it can be very difficult for chemically sensitive individuals to take. But once it heals it should be fine. Healing time is not always what they say, real world conditions may mean it takes longer. Epoxies are often used on trays, tabletops, bartops, countertops, bowls and mugs. The following brands are approved by the FDA as food safe: 2. Clear synthetic seal A clear polyurethane, acrylic or polyacrylic sealer can be used on a painted wood or other painted surface to provide an extra layer of durability and protection. Most brands of low- and VOC-free polyurethane, acrylic, and polyacrylic are likely to be food safe, although most have not been tested to FDA standards. They are considered food-safe due to the raw materials. Good brands are: Annie Sloan chalk paint AFM acrylic glaze AFM EXT 3. Shellac While many websites and companies state that shellac is classified as GRAS (Generally Regarded as Safe) by the FDA, this does not appear to be accurate. This FDA document states that shellac is not GRAS, nor is it listed in the GRAS database here. However, it is listed as an approved raw material in resin and polymer coatings that come into contact with food (FDA CFR Title 21 Volume 3 Sec. 175.300 Resinous and Polymeric Coatings) and is used to coat food, even organic food can be coated with it shellacs. I consider shellac to be very safe for food contact surfaces. If you wanted to eat it, you should take a closer look at how it was processed. Zinsser Shellac, the largest brand of pre-mixed shellac products, is not FDA approved for food contact surfaces. It would be ideal to buy the shellac from a reputable seller like Wellmart and mix it with a food grade alcohol like Everclear. Food safe spray paint I don't know of any spray paints that are officially food safe. But like other paints mentioned above, once cured, they can be considered safe due to the raw materials. Spray paints also have higher VOC levels than coating paints, even the best water-based spray paints use a solvent propellant. How to bake acrylic paint on glass

Some acrylic paints come with instructions on how to bake them and what temperature is best. Always check this first. Always place the jar in a cold oven when baking. The glass must be heated very gradually and will be damaged if placed directly into a hot oven.
