American Airlines carry-on baggage guidelines

American Airlines allows travelers to board with one personal item and one carry-on bag for free.

Personal Items Policy

You may bring a personal item such as a purse or other small bag that will fit under the seat in front of you. The bag must not be larger than 18″ x 14″ x 8″.

Certain items do not count as personal items or carry-on baggage. For example, you can join:

One diaper bag per child.

Soft-walled cooler bag for breast milk.

Medical or mobility equipment such as continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) machines or collapsible walkers.

Comfort items such as seat cushions or footrests.

Medical or mobility aids and convenience items may need to be checked if space is limited.

Each ticketed passenger is also allowed one car seat and one stroller, which can be checked in at the gate free of charge.

Hand Baggage Policy

You are allowed one carry-on bag, which is usually a smaller suitcase or bag that fits in the overhead compartment. Your carry-on baggage must not be larger than 22″ x 14″ x 9″.

Soft-sided garment bags may also be carried provided they do not exceed 51 inches considering length, width and height. If your carry-on bag is larger than allowed, you’ll have to check it – and possibly pay a bag fee.

You must not weigh more than 50 pounds when flying in Main Cabin or 70 pounds when flying First or Business Class. For flights to or from Australia and New Zealand, your baggage allowance is 62 inches and 70 pounds. Fees The standard first checked bag fee for economy travel within the US is $30. Baggage rules on an interline journey –

Per IATA Resolution 302, the process for determining baggage rules on an interline voyage follows a four-step cascade methodology where, for each checked portion:

a) Step 1: If the published baggage regulations are the same on all participating airlines; these provisions apply.

b) Step 2: If the one or more published baggage regulations differ between the participating airlines, all common regulations apply and, if regulations differ, the published baggage regulations of the MSC (Most Significant Carrier). (For codeshare flights, this is the operating airline, unless that airline publishes a rule dictating that it will be the marketing airline).

c) Step 3: If the MSC does not publish a baggage policy for the voyage in question, the published baggage policy of the airline accepting the baggage at check-in will apply.

3) The MSC (Most Significant Carrier) is

Only 01 piece of hand luggage is allowed with a maximum weight of 8 kg.

From November 1, 2019, excess weight in excess of the 8 kg baggage allowance will be charged at INR 500/kg (additional GST) for domestic flights. For travel to & from India to USA/UK/EUR/Australia/Canada the charges are USD 40/kg (GST extra). All other international sectors for travel to and from India will be charged USD 15/kg (GST extra). The maximum carry-on baggage allowance, after paying additional charges, must not exceed 10 kg including duty-free items.

If the carry-on baggage weighs more than 10 kg, it cannot be carried in the cabin and must be checked in as checked baggage.

BUSINESS / FIRST CLASS

Free carry-on baggage for First and Business Class – 01 bag not exceeding 12 kg.

The maximum carry-on baggage allowance must not exceed 12 kg including duty-free items. Overweight in excess of the 12kg baggage allowance will be charged as below. If the carry-on baggage weighs more than 12 kg, it cannot be carried in the cabin and must be checked in as checked baggage.

The ‘Kirpan’ is an important religious symbol of Sikhism. According to Indian law, passengers traveling on Indian-registered aircraft on flights with origin and destination both within India are allowed to carry a “Kirpan” personally. The dimensions of the ‘Kirpan’ must not exceed a maximum overall length of 9 inches (22.86 cm), including the length of the blade no more than 6 inches (15.24 cm) and the length of the handle no more than 3 inches (7.62cm). cm).

Transportation of battery cells.

Carrying battery cells in carry-on baggage for any electrical/electronic item is now permitted & will no longer be removed at security. Spare/loose batteries, including lithium-ion cells or batteries, for portable electronic devices may only be carried in carry-on baggage. For lithium metal batteries, the lithium metal content must not exceed 2 g and for lithium ion batteries, the watt-hour output must not exceed 100 Wh. Items that have the primary purpose of being a power source, e.g. power banks are considered spare batteries. These batteries must be individually protected to prevent short circuits. Each person is limited to a maximum of 20 spare batteries.

Hand luggage for travel to/from Canada.

Your travel between Canada and India may include travel on an Air India codeshare flight operated by Air Canada. As carry-on baggage allowances are determined by each operating airline, Air Canada’s baggage allowance may differ from Air India’s. Pursuant to a mandatory requirement established by the Transport Security Administration, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, effective May 31, 2018, the carriage of powder-like substances in carry-on (carry-on) baggage by passengers traveling to destinations in the United States is subject to the following conditions:

Powdery substances are described as fine dry particles made by grinding, crushing or crushing solid substances (e.g. flour, sugar, ground coffee, spices, powdered milk (e.g. baby food) and cosmetics), including such powders in lumpy Shape, granular or compressed material forms.

It’s very common to find cheap flights that don’t include checked baggage, especially on low-cost airlines (LCCs). So if you want to take more than one carry-on bag, you have to pay extra. While tickets may seem cheaper at first glance, they can potentially cost a lot more if you decide to do so, given the extra baggage you have to check in.

The surest way to avoid this fee is to travel with hand luggage only. However, if you just can’t do without your checked baggage, try paying for the bag online, as it’s usually a lot cheaper to buy your bag on the airline’s website than it is to buy it in advance at the check-in counter pay. Note that the maximum carry-on size varies from airline to airline. To avoid having to check and pay for your luggage if your suitcase is too big, always check your airline’s baggage policy.

In general, it’s a good idea to weigh your luggage before you get to the airport. For most airlines, maximum carry-on baggage weight ranges from 15lbs to 50lbs and more, and checked bags can usually be a maximum of 50lbs. Exceeding these limits may in some cases result in a fee of up to US$100 per bag.

If you’re traveling with someone else, who usually travels a lot lighter than you, so doesn’t bring their entire wardrobe, it pays to join forces and share luggage space. If your travel partner has the extra room, keep some of your belongings with them to avoid the risk of paying extra fees for overweight bags at the airport.

Preselected places

If your ticket does not offer the option to choose your own seat for free (which is very common with European low-cost carriers and differs with American airlines), there is usually an option to pay an additional fee for seat selection. If you’re traveling in a group, try to buy all the tickets together so you’re all seated automatically. In the rare event that you’re not sitting together, call or email the airline’s service center directly to resolve the issue.

Should you decide to seat, use apps like Seatfrog, which allow you to bid on upgraded seats at the last minute – which usually results in cheaper prices than what you’d find online.

Food and drinks on board

Each airline has its own policy regarding eating and drinking on board. Some offer free drinks and maybe even a light snack, while others offer nothing at all unless you pay for it. Most long-haul flights are required to offer all passengers at least one free meal (technically included in the ticket price). But to be on the safe side, it’s a good idea to check the terms and conditions of your specific ticket.

Although expensive compared to what you’ll find in the city center or other parts of the city, airport food and drink tends to be much cheaper and of better quality than the food on planes, which has salt and chemicals added can to keep them fresh at high altitudes. If you’d rather buy something on board, there’s also the option to pre-order a meal or snack online, which is usually cheaper than buying groceries on the fly during the flight.

You are free to bring your own bottle of water or other beverages on the plane, but wait until after security to purchase. It would be a shame to have to throw out a perfectly good bottle of water because it doesn’t meet the 3.4 ounce requirement to go through security!

Credit and Debit Card Fees

When you’re ready to buy your ticket and you’re redirected to the final payment page, you may notice that the price increases slightly depending on the payment method you chose. You’ll typically see a range of convenient options like credit and debit cards, bank transfers, and online services like PayPal – choose the one with the lowest fees, if available.

US law prevents airlines and OTAs from adding credit card fees to transactions, so you shouldn’t expect any fees if you proceed with the payment. If you book with a non-US airline or OTA, a fee may apply. However…

Passengers, on the other hand, see red. Reflexively, they claim that the airline has its thumb on the scales. But this is just the beginning of a quirky airport game that can be won if you know how to play it.

“Delta and American are asking you to remove enough to bring it under the allotted amount,” says Rich Ruddie, who runs an online consulting firm in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. “And of course, Southwest lets your bags fly freely.”

However, other airlines take a hard line on overweight bags. At some discount airlines, when his bag weighed 51 pounds, ticket agents gave Ruddie an ultimatum: pay the $55 excess baggage fee or check the bag in. “They milk you for every penny,” he says.

There is, of course, a way to avoid confrontation. Weigh your bag before you leave. Likewise, some travelers say they are more lax about curbside check-in. The agents there, who often work for tips, tend to look the other way when you have a heavy bag.

Elisabeth Herbert, a counter-agent for Alaska Airlines in Spokane, Washington, says arguing with an employee is often an act of futility. “I’ve had people argue with me who said our scales had to be off,” she says. “I’ve mostly noticed that the bags are only two to three pounds overweight.” She suggests that travelers give themselves some leeway to allow for small deviations.

One of the most egregious bag charge cases to come across my desk was Janet Mosher’s. As she flew Austrian Airlines from Salzburg, Austria to Frankfurt, Germany, a ticket agent marked her checked baggage and sent it down the conveyor belt. But her hand luggage was considered overweight.

“I could easily have met Austrian’s weight requirements by putting items from my carry-on into my checked baggage, which was well under the airline’s weight limit,” recalled Mosher, a retired teacher from Alexandria, Virginia.

The agent offered her three options: remove items from her bag and throw them away to reduce the weight, pay a fee of 75 euros for excess baggage, or transfer items from her carry-on baggage for overweight to the bag of another passenger who is still there was on the belt and just before it was checked.

“These ‘gotcha’ fees are capitalism at its worst,” she said.

I agree. It’s one thing for an airline to simply pick up the cost of transporting your excess pound, but the fee structure makes charging for overweight baggage look like the money grab that it is. Shouldn’t airlines make money the old-fashioned way by selling tickets? I contacted Austrian Airlines on her behalf and she refunded the 75 euros as a gesture of goodwill.

And if all else fails?

“I turn up the charm and appeal to the generosity of the agent,” says Nick Bratton, who works for an Anchorage-based nonprofit. It’s a strategy that’s especially effective if you’re a pound or less overweight and you can find a compelling reason the agent is looking the other way — it’s a return flight or you’ve wrapped a gift for an elderly relative.

“That approach has mostly worked for me,” says Bratton. “But I don’t recommend it as much as planning ahead.”
