Leather Hardware: Snaps

Snaps are great for fastening pockets or bags, attachment points on straps, etc. There are a few different sizes and styles of snaps that attach in different ways and work well on different types of projects.

Line 20 and 24 snap fasteners are the most widely used in leather processing. They have the same structure and set the same way, but the Line 24 snaps are larger and more durable than the Line 20 snaps. I use the Line 20 snaps for most of my leather projects. I think they are a good size for medium to heavy leather.

Line 20 and 24 snap fasteners consist of 4 parts: the cap and bushing and the post and stud. You put the cap and base together on one piece of leather and the post and bolt together on another, and then the base and bolt snap together, releasing the clasp.

To set the line 20 or 24 snaps, first punch two corresponding holes in your top and bottom leather pieces. The holes should be the size of the snap post. To make sure the snaps line up correctly, I sometimes set one side and then use that to get exact placement for the other side before punching a second hole (you’ll see what I mean when we get the assemble wallet). .

To seat the cap side into your top leather piece, slide the cap into the hole from the grain side. Then slide the socket over the stem of the cap from the flesh side.

Take your frame base and place it under your leather so the cap sits in the appropriately sized indentation. Use your Line 20 snap setting tool to seat the snap by hammering it together with a hammer. First, tap lightly with the hammer to ensure the snap is properly aligned, then tap harder to secure. If your snap is properly adjusted, it should not rotate in its hole.

To adjust the post side, insert the post through your bottom piece of leather from the flesh side and slide the stud over the post from the grain side.

You don’t need to use the divots on the snap setting base here as the post is flat on the back. Simply place your leather on a very hard, flat surface. The other side of the snap setting base works fine. Again use the snap tool and hammer to set the bolt onto the post. Now you have a complete snap pair.

Pin the two sides of your snap together to test that they connect and hold well.

Although the 20 line snaps are all the same diameter (ca snap will not adjust properly, so choose a pin length appropriate for your leather: 3/16″ for 5-7 oz leather and 5/16″ for 8 -10 oz leather.
