You’re unlikely to drink tequila straight unless you’re taking shots or enjoying a premium extra añejo. If you love sipping tequila cocktails and are looking for new ideas on what to mix with the Mexican spirit, these seven ingredients are the absolute best tequila mixers. Grab your favorite bottle of agave schnapps to whip up one of these easy cocktails in no time.

Tequila + Lemonade

This is the gold standard for two-ingredient tequila cocktails — probably the most popular aside from the margarita. While any soda will work, we prefer using high-mineral seltzer, like Topo Chico, or salted like Q. Garnish this cocktail with a citrus wedge to squeeze into the drink, whether it’s lime, orange, or grapefruit.

Tequila + grapefruit soda

Essentially a paloma, this cocktail is one of the most popular ways to drink tequila in Mexico (it’s dubbed tequila con squirt). It’s bright, lemony, subtly bitter, and downright fragile. Depending on your preference, you can use a blanco or a reposado tequila for the base of the cocktail. A blanco tequila keeps the drink light and fresh, while a reposado tequila makes it richer and more decadent. As a garnish, we recommend a greasy wedge of lime (which you should definitely squeeze into the drink) and a pinch of sea salt. In summer, this highball is an indispensable drink.

Tequila + pineapple juice

Pineapple juice and tequila were made for each other. Together they harmonize into a cocktail that is grassy, botanical, tropical and peppery. While fresh pineapple juice makes for the brightest, most tart drink, canned pineapple juice is a viable option (depending on the sweetness, you just have to cut it with a seltzer topper). Best of all, literally any tequila—be it a blanco, reposado, or añejo—serves as the base of this drink. Our favorite bottling is Calle 23’s Blanco Tequila, which gives the juice its vibrant tropical fruit flavors.

Tequila + Orange Juice

Essentially a tequila screwdriver, this breakfast cocktail is even better than its vodka-based cousin. Whether freshly squeezed orange juice or from the bottle, the drink is refreshing, light and tasty. If you’re using fresh orange juice, be sure to beat air into it – either with a whisk or with a high-speed citrus juicer. This makes the cocktail fluffy and almost creamy, a texture that pairs perfectly with the vanilla notes in a reposado tequila.

Tequila + Agave Syrup

Mix these two ingredients together and you have a Tequila Old Fashioned without the bitterness. All you need is a mixing glass, bar spoon, tray of nice ice, agave nectar (preferably 2 parts agave nectar to one part water), and a bottle of your favorite tequila, and you’ll have your delicious beverage in no time. While a blanco tequila will technically work as the base of this cocktail, it’s best to use a reposado or añejo, which has more depth, flavor, and richness.

Tequila + vermouth

Tequila and vermouth can be combined in countless ways – the types of tequila and vermouth you use will create wildly different cocktails. For a botanical riff on a martini, you can use Blanco Tequila with either a bone-dry dry vermouth or a semi-sweet white vermouth, giving the drink a rounder, velvety texture. For a richer, spicier take on Manhattan, mix a reposado, añejo, or extra añejo with sweet vermouth.

Tequila + Bloody Mary blend

Forget making this brunch with vodka. You should have done it with tequila the whole time. If you really want to take the Bloody Maria to a whole other level, you can add a flavorful spirit like Tanteo’s jalapeño-infused tequila. Just cut back on the hot sauce or your lips will burn for hours.

What order do you make Tequila Shot in? Decide which poison you want. Make sure you have a shot and a pursuer ready. If you lick your thumb and forefinger you will feel a sensation… Take out the lemon/lime slice you are holding in your hand and wipe it with your hand which has a salty stain on it. You can lick your hand to remove the salt.

How do you order tequila with lime? There are many tequila connoisseurs who swear that the most enjoyable way to drink tequila is by drinking it neat. You can order your tequila cold, on the rocks (ice) or straight, but most people like it, you can order your tequila chilled, on the rocks (ice) or straight, but most prefer it chilled. If you want lime and salt, order shots instead.

Is it salt, then tequila, then lime? Some bars typically have salt applied to the rim of the shot glass, but others involve dampening a portion of it with your fingers and then sprinkling salt over it. After the shot you lick the salt off your hand. You should bite a lime slice after the shot. Drinking lime juice fills your mouth with an aroma that masks the tequila taste.

What should I mix with tequila? Tequila pairs well with lime—whether blended into a margarita or eaten after a shot. This is a grapefruit. The club soda. It’s a jalapeano. A glass of tomato juice. Vera is an herb that has been used for centuries. I want to know what coconut water is. Creme de Violette as an added bonus.

Tequila Slammer

A tequila slammer (known as a muppet or mópet in Mexico) is a cocktail served in a Rocks glass. It’s made with tequila.

method [edit]

The drink gets its name from the way it is commonly consumed; The usual procedure is to leave about a fifth of the glass empty to allow the drink to fizz, then hold your hand over the rim of the glass and then smack it on a hard surface to mix. Whipping releases gas bubbles from the mixed drink, causing it to foam vigorously. It then quickly escapes from the glass if not drunk immediately, causing (and intentional) rapid intoxication.

It can also be served with equal parts tequila, white wine (or champagne), and soda, making for a stronger, tastier concoction.

A Mexican variant known as “Tequila Boom-Boom” uses tequila, 7-Up (or Sprite), and grenadine syrup.

In the media[edit]

One of the tequila slammer’s first (or certainly most notable) appearances is Elvis Presley demonstrating the technique in the 1963 film Fun in Acapulco.

The favorite drink of the protagonist – Inspector “Tequila” Yuen – in John Woo’s 1992 film Hard Boiled, played by Chow Yun-fat, is a tequila slammer.

Featured prominently in Jean-Jacques Beineix’s 1986 film Betty Blue, but referred to by its alternative name Tequila Rapido.
