When was the biker shuffle made?

The iconic line-dance song, first released in 1998, then re-released in 2002 with dance call-outs, is a sensation that’s been embraced at Northeast Ohio weddings and birthday celebrations ever since.

Where did shuffle dancing come from?

Shuffling originated in Melbourne, Australia, in the underground rave scene back in the early 1990s. It was here that the dance was deemed the name “The Melbourne Shuffle.” Since then it has taken off and become very popular in the mainstream EDM festival scene, practiced by millions of EDM fans all over the world.

Blending or cropping shapes has been around since the 1990s, but with the rise of social media, it’s taken to a whole new level. More and more people are learning to mix. They discover the amazing mental and physical health benefits that mingling has to offer, and they have a blast doing it.

But why are people making such a fuss about a dance move similar to the 2019 version of Running Man? For EDM fans, shuffle is much more than just having fun. It is an expression, an achievement and a way to improve their mental and physical health.

Shuffling originated in Melbourne, Australia in the early 1990s in the underground rave scene. Here the dance was given the name “The Melbourne Shuffle”. Since then it has burst onto the mainstream EDM festival scene and has become very popular, practiced by millions of EDM fans around the world.

Shuffle consists of two basic moves: the shuffle and the stomp. Most beginner shufflers learn to master these two basic moves before moving on to more advanced moves. After mastering the basic shuffle moves, throw in some spins, jumps and slides and you have a complete shuffle routine. After that, all you need is some EDM bangers blasting through your speakers for the fun to begin.

shuffle music

The Australian underground rave scene that spawned Shuffling was heavily influenced by techno music, a high-BPM electronic music subgenre that set the perfect beat for shuffle dancers at the time. Since its inception, shuffling has spread throughout the communities surrounding several new subgenres of EDM such as electro house and hardstyle.

Australian ravers in the early 1990s who got hyped and shuffled over to their favorite underground DJs.

Typically, the more upbeat, repetitive subgenres lend themselves better to dance, although you can perform the moves to any type of EDM. Recently, deep house and bass house are popular subgenres of EDM to shuffle to. That’s the beauty of shuffling: you can choose your favorite music to shuffle to, there isn’t just one set genre of music.

To help you get started with some shuffle tunes, we’ve created playlists on Spotify and SoundCloud that contain the best music to shuffle. Whether you’re a beginner or an advanced shuffler, you’ll love moving your feet to the tracks in these playlists:

Physical health benefits of shuffling

Dancing to high-tempo music as a form of exercise has been around for decades. Jazzercise was all the rage in the ’70s and ’80s. Today, a new breed of jazz ercise is taking over. This is the new era of shuffle dancing.

Shuffling to your favorite dance music has several physical health benefits. It’s a workout that’s both fun and effective. Here are some ways blending can benefit your physical health:

– It’s a portable total body workout that you can do anywhere.

– You can burn between 500 and 1,500 calories per hour.

– It improves hand-eye coordination and reduces clumsiness.

– It tones your legs, calves and glutes.

– It works your abs with twists and turns.

– It strengthens joints and ligaments in your legs.

Mental Health Benefits of Blending

Blending not only improves your physical health but also works wonders for your mental health. Not many people think about the effects it has on your mental state, but the real benefits are pretty amazing.

You’ll never see anyone shuffle with a frown on their face.

As with any other workout, shuffling releases endorphins in the brain. The longer you blend, the more of those happy chemicals are released, and the more stress and anxiety go away. Here are some of the amazing mental health benefits of blending:

– It relieves stress and sends endorphins to your brain (ever see a sad slouch?).

– It improves mental focus and concentration.

– It gives you a great sense of accomplishment after learning new moves or mastering old ones.

– It boosts your confidence and self-esteem.

– It distracts you from the stress of everyday life.

– It gives you the courage to step out of your comfort zone and dance at your next festival.

– It makes you feel like you belong (to the shuffler community).

– You will enjoy a deeper connection with the music.

– It is a fun activity that will fill your life with joy.

To dig deeper into the psychological benefits of mixing, we decided to interview a local Jacksonville, Florida DJ who goes by the name of Romeo. He is also an avid shuffler who dedicates his music and dance to a cause bigger than himself. He wants to help people around the world who are struggling with mental illness and he believes that music and dancing is the are keys to overcoming these problems.

Here’s what Romeo said about how EDM and shuffling have positively impacted his life:

“Some find what I do and what others in this industry are doing easy. For the most part they are not wrong, but there are aspects that they have no idea about. The countless nights and endless hours of productions and songs, days spent mastering your craft, and the aches and pains of practicing every single dance move. I’m doing all this because it’s my escape, a place where I feel safe in the midst of so much destruction in this world. With every song dropped and when I shuffle, every lap and every move brings me into a mental state of pure bliss. I use my platform as a DJ and as a shuffler to share my escape with the world – to be the voice others need and give those people a reason to smile on every set. I love my fans and people who follow me, they make me happy, they give me a reason to keep going.”

Below is a video of Romeo shuffling in the front row at one of his favorite artist’s shows, SkyHye.

Learn how to shuffle

Learning to shuffle sounds like a daunting task, but it really isn’t! All you have to do is take it slow and practice, practice, practice. You want to start by learning the basic running man movement.

Start with feet together, toes pointing forward. Raise your right knee to hip level. When your right foot goes back down, hop and slide your left foot backwards. Then switch sides and bring your left knee up. Start doing this, very slowly, over and over again. Soon muscle memory will kick in and you’ll be doing the running man without even trying.

Once you’ve mastered the Running Man move, you can move on to more advanced moves. Here are a few videos showing you how to perform these more advanced shuffle moves.

Kick Sidestep:

The T step:

The Charleston:

Here are a few tips to get you started:

1. Start slow – learn the basics and practice them slowly, over and over again

2. Dance in front of a mirror – this way you can see what you are doing wrong or right

3. Observe experienced shufflers and copy their moves

4. Wear good shoes and socks (otherwise your feet will hurt like hell!)

5. Start with slower BPM tracks like deep house

6. Befriend and practice with an experienced shuffler

7. Stay hydrated!

8. DON’T GIVE UP!

Start mixing today!

Learning to shuffle to your favorite music is more than just having a good time, it’s an amazing release of negative energy. Shuffle releases stress, anxiety, sad thoughts, tension, negativity. When your feet move, the old is out and the new is in.

This is why blending can have such a positive impact on the lives of millions of people around the world. We’re always looking for ways to get rid of those negative emotions, but sometimes the simple solution is to just dance them out.

The mental and physical health benefits of shuffling are amazing. You always see a smile on a shuffler’s face. You’ll always see them break a sweat. Why is it called the Cupid Shuffle?

I researched the history of the Cupid Shuffle. It was written and sang by Bryson Bernard whom stage name is “Cupid”. He had earned his nickname when he performed/sang for the Sam Cooke’s 1960’s single hit “Cupid”. The song Cupid Shuffle was released on February 13, 2007.

Story The dance my group chose was the Cupid Shuffle. I researched the history of the Cupid Shuffle. It was written and sung by Bryson Bernard, whose stage name is “Cupid”. He earned his nickname while performing/singing on Sam Cooke’s 1960s hit single “Cupid”. The song Cupid Shuffle was released on February 13, 2007. What inspired Cupid to write Cupid Shuffle was that before every performance he would always perform a line dance and he saw how the crowd had reacted to it and decided that he wanted to create a modern-day line dance. Cupid was born on October 10, 1982 in Lafayette. He went to the University of Louisiana on a full scholarship in track and field. Amor had left his athletics team to start/start a singing group

And the Breaksk8 had also danced to the Cupid Shuffle. They performed on America’s Best Dance Crew. The Breaksk8 are dancers who dance on skates. The Cupid Shuffle was also featured in the movie Jumping the Broom. A fun fact about Cupid is that he was the driving force behind CuRobiks. After traveling as support for his music, he gained a lot of weight. This worried him particularly since his home state had the highest obesity rate. A fun fact about the song Cupid Shuffle was that a lot of people confused the lyrics “Down, down, do your dance, do your dance” with “down, down, do your dad, do your dad”. Dance Steps for The Cupid shuffle In the song Cupid shuffle, there are six steps to dance this song. The steps are, first wait for the music. Next, when you’re on the beat, go right four times as directed in the song. Then go left four times as the song continues. Fourth, kick your right leg and then your left, repeat this step twice. Fifth, walk in place and turn left while walking in place. As you walk in place, you can shake your hips to the beat of the music. The sixth and final step would be to repeat the steps each time you turn in place while walking. song

Why is the Cupid Shuffle popular?

The song appears in a party scene in season one, episode three of Ginny and Georgia. The Cupid Shuffle was a defining aspect of the early 2010s due to its meteoric popularity as an avant-garde exercise technique for elementary schools and bowling alleys, similar to DJ Casper’s “Cha Cha Slide”.

2007 single from Cupid

“Cupid Shuffle” is a song by Cupid from his 2007 studio album Time for a Change. It has spawned a popular line dance and has drawn comparisons to DJ Casper’s “Cha Cha Slide.”

In the United States, the song peaked at number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 and number 21 on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart on the August 18, 2007 issue.

The voice[edit]

In 2012, Cupid selected the song for his audition on the third season of the American music competition show The Voice, which aired on NBC. Despite giving a different version of the hit, none of the four judges pressed his “I Want You” button and he was automatically eliminated from further competition on the show. But after they turned their chairs, Judge Cee Lo Green recognized Cupid and asked him to play another song to prove that “he can sing”.

20 years after ‘The Cleveland Shuffle,’ Big Mucci is still dancing

CLEVELAND, Ohio — “Whoa, do the shuffle!”

The command abruptly descends into a catchy bass line that closely resembles that of Michael Jackson’s Billie Jean. Instructions are soon being called out – steps, kicks and a few “giddy-ups” mixed in with whistles.

If you’re from Cleveland, you might recognize 71 North’s “The Cleveland Shuffle.” First released in 1998 and re-released with dance calls in 2002, the iconic line dance song is a sensation, having been celebrated at weddings and birthday parties across northeast Ohio ever since.

According to Big Mucci, the leader of 71 North — aka musician and dancer Mark Wynn — the song has been played at Cavs halftime shows, games played by former WNBA team Cleveland Rockers, and even at mayoral races.

“I think ‘The Cleveland Shuffle’ had a big impact because it was something fresh and new that the Clevelanders had never heard or seen,” Wynn said. “I’m the first person to ever record a line dance record in the city of Cleveland. I’m also the first person to ever record a line dance song for the city of Cleveland.”

Two decades later, The Cleveland Shuffle is one of Wynn’s best-known works, alongside regional hits like Boodie Bounce and Biker’s Shuffle. This year he celebrated the hit songs on his new remix album The Linedance Movement 2, which includes instrumental versions and electronic remixes of the shuffle, as well as brand new singles.

All of Wynn’s music is made exclusively for line dancing. The songs’ steady beats are paired with no-nonsense dances, with Wynn leading the group.

Wynn was formerly the leader and main songwriter of 71 North, but now produces music under his own nickname “Big Mucci” – a combination of his childhood nickname “Mucci” and his more recent nickname “Big Man”. Over the past decade, 71 North (a dance crew named after one of Cleveland’s most famous freeways) has disbanded while members have found careers in theater, fitness, graphic design and more.

Only Wynn continues to put out line dance music and he is known for it both locally and nationally. He has received two lifetime achievement awards – one from the Baltimore line dance collective Union Crew and one from the Ohio Hip-Hop Awards. He was honored with an Ohio Kings Award as an “Ohio Icon” and won an Award of Excellence at the Cleveland’s Legend Awards.

Aside from his accolades, one of Wynn’s major accomplishments is that Beyoncé used a biker’s shuffle dance step — or at least it’s a step that looks similar enough to the biker’s shuffle — on her Formation world tour. (Wynn proved his point with a couple of compelling videos on YouTube.)

Self-described as the “godchild” of linedancing, Wynn joined DJ Cupid, Casper and DJ Maestro and ushered in a disco-inspired era of linedancing in the ’90s.

“When you say line dancing, the first thing people think of is country,” Wynn said. “But country line dancing came after the disco era.”

Mid 1970s “L.A. Hustle took over the West Coast disco clubs and morphed into The Bus Stop as it gained popularity on the East Coast in the late ’70s. According to Wynn, “The Cleveland Shuffle”, released in 1998, was the next urban line dance song to have views.

Of course, other popular albums came out in between, most notably The Electric Slide. But because the original version of “The Electric Slide” was based on Bunny Wailers’ “Electric Boogie,” which had no in-song call-outs, Wynn doesn’t count it as an original line dance single.

That’s an important distinction, Wynn said.

“A lot of people call me the godchild of linedance because I actually make music for linedance. You have people who have the normal music that makes a line dance do it, but then you have people like me who do the line dances and the music,” Wynn said. “You can’t do any other kind of dance.”

Wynn finds inspiration for songs from his own life. Wynn, an avid motorcyclist and member of the O’Men motorcycle club, wrote “Biker’s Shuffle” to honor the group and break their stigma. (The O’Mens were featured in a 2003 feature of the Cleveland scene called “Un-Easy Riders: The Omens Motorcycle Club.”

“We’re just regular people, a group of people who get together and love motorcycling,” he said. “I try to put the whole thing in a positive light.”

There’s also “Breast Cancer Awareness Shuffle,” a song Wynn wrote in honor of his mother, who died two years ago after a 15-year battle with the disease. Wynn originally planned to film his mother dancing for the music video, but she died before he got the chance.

“It was a big shock,” he said. “I wish I had videoed it then.”

Growing up, Wynn was supported in his artistic pursuits by his family. He grew up in the Lee Harvard neighborhood. When his parents divorced, he split time between Lee-Harvard and Euclid.

He attended the Cleveland School of the Arts from grades 4 through 8 with a major in modern dance and ballet and a minor in acting. From there he went to John Marshall High School and graduated from Max Hayes High School in 1991.

“My whole dream was to be an MC Hammer backup dancer and dance on ‘Soul Train,'” he said. “I’ve been dancing forever”

Wynn played high school football for half a season, but his father pulled him from the team when his grades began to drop. During his junior year of high school, Wynn became involved in his classmates’ gangs and tried to get along with others his own age.

“Thinking back, it’s kind of funny because my friends used to call me a part-time gangbanger because where I lived with my mom and also with my dad, there was no gang activity in those areas,” he said. “Also, I think maybe I was the only gangster who needed to be in the house when the streetlights came on.”

After graduating, Wynn joined the Marine Corps and was stationed at Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii, where he worked in naval aviation logistics. He also had temporary additional duty with the military police in Okinawa, Japan.

The moment he returned home to Cleveland, he started dancing again. He wrote and published Boodie Bounce in 1997 while working at McDonald’s in Tower City. The dance song provided lightness in a time of tragedy. Wynn’s younger brother Anthony was killed the same year, a victim of gun violence.

At the time, Wynn had almost no music writing experience — but fans were so enthralled with the dance song that they encouraged him to write more.

Over the next two decades, he continued to release singles, EPs and albums, both as 71 North and Big Mucci, and regularly danced at events.

He still dances today and works as a security guard alongside his job. Currently, Wynn’s work in music takes up most of his weekends and takes him to events around the country. He averages about 100 shows a year — but he still makes time to take care of his three kids and partner.

Wynn performs at festivals, community centers, wedding receptions and cruises. His music is also used in schools in physical education programs and helps teach dance as an exercise.

“Anything that has to do with entertainment, I’m in it,” he said.

Sometimes Wynn’s songs are more intense when performed in the line dancing community. He will play instrumental versions and have ardent followers dance along, memorizing all the steps.

“In the line dancing world, there are regular line dancers that do the clubs and wedding receptions, nights out and social gatherings,” he said. “Then you have the line dancing community where they live, eat and sleep. That’s all they do.”

Wynn wants all of his Big Mucci releases to remain accessible to everyone – even people who think they can’t dance or children. That’s why he includes wordless instrumental versions of his songs, and also why he’s recently introduced clean versions of songs like “Boodie Bounce” and “Hokey Pokey” for kids.

For Wynn, the best thing about performing is when groups share a moment of joy together.

“A lot of people come in when they’re feeling down, or they don’t know what’s going on in their house, but they come out and that 20 to 30 minutes of line dancing out there just puts a smile on their face,” he said . “What I love most is seeing the joy on people’s faces.”
