If you’re craving more variety in your video effects while making TikTok videos, you’re in luck. TikTok offers a plethora of filters and effects that you can apply to your clips with just a few taps. Confusingly, however, TikTok places its large selection of effects in two places within the creation mode screen: filters are on the top-right side of the screen, and effects are on the bottom-left side. Here’s how to find and use them.

How to use filters on TikTok

You can only see TikTok’s filters when you’re in creation mode, so let’s get ready to create a video first.

1. Launch the TikTok app and tap the Create button at the bottom center of the screen.

2. Tap Filters on the right side of the screen. A filter pop-up menu will appear at the bottom of the screen.

5. Drag the slider left or right to decrease or increase the intensity of the filter effect.

6. If you are satisfied with the effect, tap the screen and then record your video normally. To remove the filter, tap the stop icon on the far left.

How to use effects on TikTok

TikTok also has a large number of lens effects scattered across more than a dozen categories, but they’re in a different place than filters.

1. Launch the TikTok app and tap the Record button at the bottom of the screen.

4. Tap an effect you want to use. Some are interactive or require additional input; others are ready to record as soon as you tap on them.

5. To remove an effect you don’t like, tap the stop icon on the far left of the categories.

Since there are so many lens effects, TikTok makes it easy to find interesting effects in other people’s videos and save them to use yourself. If you’re watching a video that contains an effect, you should see the effect on the bottom right of the video. Tap on it and you can save the effect to your favorites.

How to add effects to a TikTok video

TikTok effects are used by both casual users and popular social media influencers to make their videos more engaging and fun. You can also add photos to your videos.

How to Add Video Effects on TikTok.

Tap the plus sign (+) in the middle of the bottom menu. Tap the red capture icon to record a new video, or tap Upload to upload an existing clip from your device. Adding text to a TikTok video is pretty easy and is done in a similar way to adding text to an Instagram story.

Instagram is one of the most popular social platforms in the world. Currently, the service is part of the meta-conglomerate – formerly known as Facebook.

Unlike other social platforms, Instagram is based on multimedia content instead of text. The main role on Instagram is taken by pictures and short videos.

One of the most popular Instagram features are the filters. Many users find very attractive effects to apply to their photos through the app.

Instagram filters don’t just change the tones of the images. There are also filters that can fundamentally change the appearance of the subject.

However, currently Instagram filters are not seen by many users who just get an error message stating that this effect is not available in your location.

According to multiple reports, many Instagram users cannot find their filters. The service allows you to save your favorite filters for quick use, but now those are missing.

When users try to add a filter to their favorites list again, they just get an error message saying “This effect is not available in your location”.

This is the reason for the problem

Most of the users affected by the problem are from Texas and Illinois, but this has an explanation. It appears that due to facial recognition laws, Meta was forced to disable Instagram filters in these areas.

As mentioned at the beginning, Instagram filters can also significantly change the appearance of the subject. For this, the app applies face scanning and recognition technology.

However, this technology does not pass the filters of current Texas and Illinois privacy laws. As a result, Instagram filters are “temporarily” unavailable in these areas.

Meta plans to develop an opt-in system that will explain to users how the company’s face scan works. Then the filters are available again, but there is no ETA for them.

A possible workaround

According to reports, some users were able to restore their filters. They did this by enabling/disabling their phone location and uninstalling/reinstalling the Instagram app.

It happened to me without updating! I miraculously got my saved filters back after turning on/off and uninstalling/reinstalling my phone’s location. But I have several friends who didn’t get their saved effects back and just see an “Effect not available in your location” error message.

Update 2 (May 12)

12:56 p.m. (ACTUAL): Meta has temporarily disabled Instagram filters in Texas and Illinois to avoid unnecessary litigation (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6). However, Snapchat filters are still available in these regions.

So, users who lost Instagram filters can use Snapchat as an alternative. It can also be used for live stream and video chat on PC & Mac via Snap Camera. In addition, Snapchat allows you to create custom filters.

9:41 AM (ACTUAL): If Instagram filters aren’t available in your area, you can try some VPN apps to get them back. Here are some popular VPN services:

11:37am (ACTUAL): Some users – who previously lost their filters – are now reporting (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) that they are back on Instagram.

However, not all users have recovered them. Filters are now gradually making their comeback on Instagram.

12:15 PM (ACTUAL): Users who have received filters back on Instagram will receive a warning message that they must agree to by choosing “Allow” to be able to use filters.

4:55 p.m. (ACTUAL): A user shared a possible workaround that might bring filters back on Instagram. To do this, the location permission must be deactivated in the app settings.

Now connect to a server in a different location, then open the Instagram app, log in again and see if the filters are available again.

However, it seems that the issue where users get the error message “This effect is not available in your location” persists even after the latest update as user reports are still coming in.

5:33 p.m. (ACTUAL): After a recent Instagram update, a Redditor lost the “Filter Search” feature.

The Redditor tried to restore the feature by installing an older version of Instagram (from 5 months ago). However, that didn’t work, so it looks like a change on the server side.

4:49 p.m. (ACTUAL): The Instagram app recently received a new update with version 243.1 and 243.0.0.16.11 on both the App Store and Play Store.

Hence, users can install the latest version and see if the “This effect is not available in your location” error gets fixed.

4:50 p.m. (ACTUAL): The Instagram app recently received a new update on the Play Store and App Store. So, users can install it and see if this problem gets fixed.

Since its launch in 2010, Instagram has enjoyed a reputation as a reliable app. Of all the social networks, Instagram seems to work and not crash, lets you navigate through your friends’ photos without having to deal with errors, and lets you send DMs reliably. Until that moment you’re really trying to show your followers some cool photos and the damn thing doesn’t work.

If you’re trying to create an Instagram Story and don’t see all the filters or options that should be there, you’re not alone. Better still, the situation is not hopeless. There are a few ways to fix the problem, including the one that worked for me. I’ll show you what I did first, and then I’ll outline some other fixes in case the first method doesn’t work for you.

What should happen is that when you tap your own icon to create a story, a bunch of filters will appear. They’re all lined up at the bottom of the screen, and each one does something different. There should be several filters to choose from, but occasionally some will disappear. We’re trying to fix that here.

Fixing Instagram filters

The first method is something we should all do from time to time: take out the trash. What fixed the missing Instagram filters for me was clearing my phone. Between apps, photos, files, and shares, I had pretty much filled all available memory. Like many other devices, my phone decided it was time to lock me down for unnecessary data and files.

I deleted all the apps I no longer needed. I force close all apps currently running in the background. I then tried Instagram again to see if the problem went away. Guess what? The correct number of filters loaded and stayed loaded even when I restarted my phone and restarted Instagram to test it.

Although this was part of the program design in my phone or Instagram, it helped free up memory and kill running apps. Whether it was a RAM issue or storage, Instagram filters would come back and lag.

Other ways to fix Instagram filters

Once you’ve taken out the junk and cleaned up the files on your phone a bit, you’ll probably feel a little better. However, this may not fix the Instagram problem. If your available storage is adequate, your Downloads folder is pristine, and you otherwise have no idea why those filters are being lost, try some of these general app fixes. They might work.

1. Restart the Instagram app

Restarting the app is always a win. If you are on the iPhone, it is enough to close it. Android users need to go to “Settings -> Apps” and “Force Stop” in Instagram to get the full effect. This will completely restart the app and fix all kinds of bugs that you may not have noticed.

2. Reboot your phone

There’s really something to the concept of “turning off and on again”. If restarting the app doesn’t work, try restarting your phone. It can free up RAM, force cache clearing and cause your phone’s OS to reload the app. It fixes most phone issues and might fix this too.

3. Clear app cache in Instagram

The app cache in Android is also a common cause of app errors. This is often the case when a single app isn’t working properly and restarting or restarting doesn’t work.

Select “Settings” and then “Apps”.

Select “Instagram” and then “Storage”.

Choose Clear Cache.

Once that’s done, the counters should return to zero, and you can try Instagram again to see if those filters popped up again.

4. Update Instagram

Go to “Google Play Store” or “iOS App Store”, select “Instagram” and “Update” if available. It’s best to use the “Update All” option in the App Store when it’s available, mainly because other apps that require an update can wreak havoc on your phone and interfere with how Instagram works.

5. Reinstall Instagram

If nothing else works, a fresh install of Instagram might be in order. This is generally a last resort, but it may be necessary if these filters are still missing after all other suggestions have been followed. I don’t blame you if you want to wait a minute to see if things work themselves, as poor network connection or the down wifi can cause phones to do all sorts of unpredictable things.

If you decide to proceed with reinstalling Instagram, make sure you backup and uninstall all the images, stories, and anything else you have on the app.

Reboot your phone to clear it from memory, then visit Google Play Store or App Store, select Instagram and install it. Set it again and hope the filters return.
