This is a list of time capsules. The International Time Capsule Society Registry estimates that there are between 10,000 and 15,000 time capsules worldwide.[1] An active list of Time Capsules is maintained by the NotForgotten Digital Preservation Library.

On September 29, 1896, when the cornerstone of the Perth Observatory was laid, Sir John Forrest and other notable dignitaries attended the occasion. Several important items were placed in a “leaden box”, sealed and deposited in a cavity beneath the cornerstone. The local press reported on the event and mentioned it here because “X-ray tubes and a description of the procedure along with sample photos” donated by X-ray pioneer William John Hancock were included in the cache.[2] This is the first known instance of a time capsule in Western Australia and in Australia.

Also in Western Australia, to celebrate the laying of the foundation stone of the Northam Railway Institute on 28 July 1897, laid by Mrs. Ann Throssell, wife of the Commissioner of Crown Lands and local MP George Throssell, a bottle containing two copies of the Northam Advertiser newspaper and several Coins were placed in a cavity beneath the foundation stone.[3]

To celebrate its golden jubilee, Epping Boys High School of Sydney buried a time capsule in the foyer of its library in 2007, to be excavated in the jubilee year. An earlier time capsule was buried in 1982 to celebrate the Silver Jubilee. The town of Cowra in west-central New South Wales contained a time capsule that was buried near an eagle sculpture in the park not far from the town’s information center. The capsule was opened on an unspecified date in 2000, although the sculpture survives, no mention is made of the time capsule once buried there.

A time capsule is also located at Nailsworth Primary School in South Australia, which was planted in 2001 to open in 2025. This capsule was planted to replace the capsule opened in 1977 the same year.[4] A time capsule also exists on the grounds of Melbourne High School in Victoria.

A time capsule on Canberra’s City Hill was unveiled on March 11, 2013 to commemorate the city’s 100th anniversary. It is scheduled to be unsealed in 2113.[5]

On February 22, 2018, the Sunshine Coast Council concluded its celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the naming of the Sunshine Coast with the burial of a historic time capsule.[6] The capsule contains a number of reports, documents and items from the previous year, as well as a letter from Mayor Mark Jamieson and 2017 Young Citizen of the Year Jak Hardy, who was named his guardian until 2067.[7]

To celebrate its 150th anniversary, Bacardi Limited installed a 6′ x 1′ stainless steel time capsule encased in a granite cap and cement base in front of Bacardi’s global headquarters in Bermuda. In Brazil, many institutions have independently created their own time capsules, some of which have already been opened for celebrations or historical research purposes:

On April 3, 1922, a metal box was buried in a yard of the 3rd Anti-Aircraft Artillery Group (3º GAAAe) in Caxias do Sul/RS. The time capsule containing historical documents such as old newspapers, official army reports and coins was restored by the Universidade de Caxias do Sul (UCS) and returned to the Brazilian Army. The existence and location of the box was discovered 100 years after the burial when Corpoal Glauber Tiago Dal Paz found a reference to it in a book. He researched the history of the artillery unit for the centenary. [9]

On the occasion of their 50th anniversary in 1969, the “Movimento dos Bandeirantes” prepared inside a 1m high bronze cylinder containing objects, documents, messages and many other information about the Bandeirantes of that time. It was buried in a granite monument in front of their headquarters. The time capsule was opened on August 13, 2019, during a ceremony attended by more than 1,000 people from all regions of the country who came to Rio de Janeiro to celebrate the 100th anniversary of this youth movement. In 1972, to celebrate the 150th anniversary of Brazil’s independence, a time capsule was installed at the National Museum of Brazil, scheduled to open in 2022. [11]

On May 30, 2013, a group of students from Colégio Setor Leste, in Brasília/DF, built a time capsule to record the dreams and aspirations of the school’s staff and alumni during its 50th anniversary. 35 years later, in 2048, the box is to be opened. [12]

Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi had buried a time capsule outside one of the gates of the Red Fort complex on August 15, 1972 amid political opposition. Indira Gandhi’s government named this time capsule “Kalpaatra”, Delhi, which contained the history of India after independence. It should be opened after 1000 years. The next Janata government dug it up in 1977, but its contents were never published and have been lost. [22][23][24][25]

Alexandra Girls’ English Institution, a school in Fort, South Mumbai, buried a time capsule in 2014 and planned to open it on September 1, 2062, for the school’s bicentenary. [30]

Under the flag of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, a time capsule was buried at the premises of the Lovely Professional University, a university in Jalandhar, Punjab, on the second day of the Indian National Congress on January 4, 2019. Nobel Prize winners included biochemist Avram Hershko and physicist Duncan Haldane. They lowered an aluminum and wood 8×8 time capsule box with a glass door. 10 feet into the ground. On June 1, 1976, when the construction of the Hayam Wuruk Building (Wisma Hayam Wuruk) in Jakarta was completed, a time capsule was buried in one of the building structures. The capsule contains polaroid pictures of the capsule burial ceremony, some coins and daily newspapers in Jakarta published that day. The opening date is unknown.[31]

In 2015, to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Indonesian independence, a time capsule was buried in a plaza in Merauke, Papua, near Mopah International Airport. Inside the capsule are “the dreams and hopes” of Indonesia’s children for the next 70 years, due to open in 2085. The Merauke Time Capsule Monument was erected on the buried capsule and dedicated on November 16, 2018.[32]

A 20-strong White War military barracks on Mount Scorluzzo – which had been locked away at the end of World War I – became partially accessible from the 1990s and fully accessible in 2015 due to melting glaciers.[33] The barracks contained straw beds, clothes, lanterns, newspapers, postcards, coins, canned goods, and marrowless animal bones.[33]

In 1967, in Aktau, the people sent a message showing the chronology of the development of the Mangyshlak Peninsula with the names of the people who helped build the city in the desert. The letter was placed in a metal cylinder in a triangular marble urn. It opened in November 2017.[36]

Kuwait[ edit ]

In 2019, a time capsule was commissioned by the Kuwait Institute for Scientific Research to observe the opening of the Shagaya Renewable Energy Park. It is scheduled to open in 2061 when the state of Kuwait celebrates its centenary. [37] [38]

On December 15, 2013, a time capsule was buried in the garden of the English School, Kuwait to commemorate the school’s 60th anniversary. It is scheduled to open in 2073.[39]

Malaysia[ edit ]

The Rotary Club Time Capsule Monument (GPS: 3.15912, 101.69825) is a memorial monument along Jalan Sultan Ismail in Kuala Lumpur. It was originally located in Dataran Merdeka but was moved to Jalan Sultan Ismail around 2016. It consists of a stainless steel column topped with a Rotary International logo. At the base is a pedestal clad in black marble, beneath which is buried a time capsule. The memorial was erected to celebrate Rotary’s presence in Malaysia since 1929. It was inaugurated on June 26, 2000 by Kuala Lumpur Mayor Tan Sri Dato’ Kamaruzzaman bin Shariff.

Norway[ edit ]

On September 17, 2017, near Poland’s Hornsund polar station in Norway’s Svalbard archipelago, scientific researchers buried a 60-centimetre-long stainless steel pipe containing samples that should inform finders up to half a million years in the future on the current state of knowledge in areas such as geology , biology and technology.[40]

The El Hogar building in Escolta, Manila contained a time capsule behind a copper plaque and is thought to contain mostly Spanish language works. It was reportedly removed from the building in 2018. [41]

Near Naguilian City Hall, La Union, three time capsules were sealed containing memorabilia related to the city’s history and culture. These are to be opened after 25, 50 and 100 years.[42]

Newton Aycliffe, County Durham, England: On March 21, 2017, a time capsule bearing the name of its creator, James D. Robinson, was “sealed” at an informal gathering at a local church hall. It was then given to the nearby Durham County Record Office at County Hall in the city of Durham, where it will be kept in its archives for the next 300 years. Experts warn of a potential bug that could affect Mac users who still rely on Apple Time Capsules for backups. Although Apple discontinued the Time Capsule in 2018, the product is still used by many Mac users, and a failure in the Seagate hard drive inside could compromise data.

The news was first reported by German data recovery company Datenrettung Berlin (via Golem). Apple used Seagate Grenada hard drives in the Time Capsules. These drives now suffer from an obvious design flaw that data rescue says results in unusually high failure rates:

The damage to the parking ramp then leads to the read/write unit being destroyed and severely deformed the next time the read/write unit is parked. If the Time Capsule is switched on again or wakes up from sleep mode, the data disks of the Seagate hard drive are destroyed because the deformed read/write unit rubs against them.

Data Recovery says this flaw in Seagate’s hard drive design is at the root of almost every Time Capsule failure they’ve seen. It states that while data recovery is sometimes possible, it requires “extreme effort” and in some cases the data is not fully recoverable.

Data Recovery recommends users of a 2 TB or 3 TB Time Capsule to look for an alternative backup solution. The folks at iFixit have a detailed guide on how to swap out the hard drive in an AirPort Time Capsule for something more reliable.

The Samuel Adams and Paul Revere Time Capsule is a time capsule housed in a corner pillar of the Massachusetts State House. It is widely believed to have been buried in 1795 by then-governors Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. It is the oldest known time capsule in the United States.[1]

The time capsule is a metal container measuring 5.5 x 7.5 x 1.5 inches (140 mm × 191 mm × 38 mm) and weighing about 10 pounds (4.5 kg). It was first removed from its location in 1855, at which time its contents were cleaned and documented. Additional items were added at this time and it was resealed in place. The capsule was again removed from its location in December 2014. An X-ray examination by conservationists at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts revealed the presence of coins and other items. It was opened by professionals at a media event in the museum’s American Gallery on January 6, 2015.[2] Its contents include newspaper pages from the period and coins, including a 1652 pine shilling. There was also a silver plate, probably engraved by Revere, and a copper medal depicting George Washington. The objects were temporarily exhibited.[3] The capsule was sealed back into the cornerstone by Boston officials in a traditional ceremony on June 17, 2015. 26. Love letters to each other

How nice would it be to discover old love letters when you finally open your capsule? When a future stranger finds your capsule, it will be such a pleasure to be able to read love letters. So romantic!

27. The story of your love

No time capsule is complete without its story. Be sure to include the date you seal the capsule along with a history of your life as a couple up to that point.

28. Your bucket list

Be creative with this one! What do you want to do together before you die?

Think about where you want to travel, what dates you want to have, and what activities and adventures you want to experience together. You can even put dream homes and the number of children you envision on your list.

29th anniversary or wedding cards from friends and family

Stuff some cards from friends and family in your time capsule so you can remember all the support you’ve had. It will also be fun to see the style of the cards from the year of your anniversary or wedding. You can also add an invitation to your anniversary party or wedding.

30. Your favorite bottle of wine or champagne

When the time capsule is large enough, add your favorite bottle of wine or champagne. These make for great keepsakes.

Make sure you empty (or drink) it first so it doesn’t go rancid when you open the time capsule. Who knows if this brand will even still exist when your capsule is discovered?

31. A dried flower from your wedding or first date

This is such a sentimental and beautiful item to keep in your capsule. A flower from a bouquet you shared together will work perfectly. Or you can pick a flower from your garden if you have a garden and dry it or put it in a flower and leaf press.

32. A piece of your wedding attire

Whether it’s a piece of your wedding dress or a tie, add something you wore on your wedding day. This will be sentimental for you in the future, and when someone else opens your capsule, it will be interesting for them to see the style of your wedding.

Time capsule ideas for seniors

Graduating from high school is a wonderful achievement and an important transition in life. Congratulations! 35. College Admission Letters

If you’re going to college, further congratulations are in order! Getting into college is a great achievement. Preserve this special achievement by placing acceptance letters in your time capsule.

36. A description of your hometown with pictures

Write a one-page description of your home, school, and town. Be sure to include some pictures to show how everyone and everything looked like during your senior year.

37. Pictures of you with friends and family

They will want to remember how you looked now and who you were close to. As they say, a picture says more than a thousand words.

38. A page from your diary or diary

It will be so much fun reading this in the future! When someone else uncovers your capsule what an amazing find to discover your innermost thoughts and desires.

Time Capsule storage tips

Now that you’ve completed your time capsule, you’re probably wondering what to do with it. The choice is yours – both indoors and outdoors.

If you plan on burying your time capsule, make sure you bury it just a foot or less underground. Make sure everything is kept in the right materials or they will be completely ruined over the years. Be sure to research! Also, make sure you mark the grave site or create a map so it can be found in the future.

You can seal your time capsule and then store it somewhere inside. You could hide it somewhere or you could display it prominently. These make a great conversation piece – just don’t look inside!

One last tip: don’t put anything perishable in your time capsule. It can spoil the rest of your items, and nobody wants to find a moldy sandwich!

The “time capsule” was a new addition to this year’s census form, which consisted of a blank space for people to write any message they wanted.

The message will then be stored for 100 years before it is then released to the public and will make interesting reading for our great-grandchildren.

I had this problem too. Yes, you can use it as a hard drive, and better yet, you can use it wirelessly with a password. You can find out how in my thread. You can find it here. If you have any questions let me know because I like using it without internet breaks and I got it working. I would recommend reading the entire thread before trying the steps listed. Anyhow, here is a simplified process:

1. Connect to the router – First, find an Ethernet cable lying around or unplug one from your Mac. Then plug one end into the <--> LAN slot on your router. Then connect the other end to your hard drive/time capsule via the WAN port. The WAN port is the one with a dotted circle printed on it.

2. Erase Disk – I would recommend doing this when the disk is on the populated side. Be warned, make sure you remove any important files from the drive. If you don’t know how to do this, skip this step for now and come back to it later. First, open the Airport Utility app. It should appear in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder in your Finder. Select your Time Capsule, then click Edit. Once in the menus, select Hard Drives at the top. Then click Erase Disk. This will erase everything from your hard drive. You keep the settings, but your data is unrecoverable. Again, only do this if you are sure there is nothing there that you need.

3. Factory reset – Don’t worry, this isn’t as daunting as it might sound. You will keep all your files, just clear your settings. First, get a bent paper clip or mechanical pencil. Next, disconnect all cables from the time capsule except the power supply. Instead, pull the plug out of the socket. Then press and hold the reset button, located next to the oval opening and below the printed play button. Stick the Time Capsule back into the wall while holding it down. Hold the button down for about 15 seconds.

4. Reconnect all cables. If you go into Airport Utility it should show up as Airport Time Capsule a7as5 or something like that on other devices. Click on it and set it up. Click Create New Network. Once in, set the name and password for it (you’ll use this later to unlock the hard drive), then go to the “Network” tab and change the network mode to “Off (Bridge mode)”. Then go to the “Wireless” tab and select “Off” for the network mode. Then click Refresh and wait a minute.

5. Go to Finder and click on the airport name you gave it. It should be under the shared tab, but if it’s not, click Finder in the top left of your screen and select Preferences. Then make sure all items under the Shared heading are checked. Go back and it should appear. Enter the password when prompted and away you go! Click on the Data folder and drag and drop all the items you want.

6. Only do this step if you skipped it. 2. Grab any files from the hard drive that you may need, then continue with the rest of Step 2.

Well, the Time Capsule is a wireless internet router that also has a built-in hard drive. It’s designed primarily as a router, but also serves as a backup destination for Time Machine. You can also connect a USB hard drive and/or USB printer to the Time Capsule and share them with other clients over the network.

Is this something you need?

If you can’t connect the Time Capsule to the modem/router with an Ethernet cable, the only way is to set up the Time Capsule to create a separate wireless network and then manually “switch” to that network (or connect your Mac with an Ethernet cable if that’s easier) if you want to back up your Mac to the Time Capsule.

Not very convenient I’m afraid.

The network you set up on the Time Capsule doesn’t have Internet access, so you can’t download Time Capsule updates this way.
