How long do time capsules last?
For a personal time capsule, 10 to 30 years may be enough, whereas a generational time capsule meant for your grandchildren may need to last 60 to 70 years. If you want your capsule to be opened at an even later date, you will want to start planning the logistics.

Write something from the heart and what it was like when you were their age or like they were. Write something you think she would enjoy and things you like right now. You might want to write down some of your favorite recipes and then she could have recipes for her kids if she ever gets any. Tell her about your current lifestyle and the things you have achieved and hope to achieve in life. Offer her words of wisdom when she reaches your age now.
Does Apple still sell Time Capsule?
Even though Apple discontinued the Time Capsule in 2018, the product is still in use by many Mac users, and a flaw in the Seagate drive inside could put data at risk. The news was first reported by the German data recovery company Datenrettung Berlin (via Golem).
Items to put in your time capsule
The news was first reported by German data recovery company Datenrettung Berlin (via Golem). Apple used Seagate Grenada hard drives in the Time Capsules. These drives now suffer from an obvious design flaw that data rescue says results in unusually high failure rates:
We have to assume that this is a design flaw1 in the Seagate Grenada hard drive (ST3000DM001 / ST2000DM001 2014-2018) built into the Time Capsule. The parking ramp of this hard drive consists of two different materials. With this hard drive model, installed in a rather poorly ventilated Time Capsule, the parking ramp will sooner or later break. The damage to the parking ramp then leads to the read/write unit being destroyed and severely deformed the next time the read/write unit is parked. If the Time Capsule is switched on again or wakes up from sleep mode, the data disks of the Seagate hard drive are destroyed because the deformed read/write unit rubs against them.
Data Recovery says this flaw in Seagate’s hard drive design is at the root of almost every Time Capsule failure they’ve seen. It states that while data recovery is sometimes possible, it requires “extreme effort” and in some cases the data is not fully recoverable.
Data Recovery recommends users of a 2 TB or 3 TB Time Capsule to look for an alternative backup solution. The folks at iFixit have a detailed guide on how to swap out the hard drive in an AirPort Time Capsule for something more reliable.

What is the oldest Time Capsule?
The Samuel Adams and Paul Revere Time Capsule is a time capsule located in a cornerstone of the Massachusetts State House. It is widely believed to have been buried in 1795 by then-Governor Samuel Adams and Paul Revere. It is the oldest known time capsule in the United States.
Items to put in your time capsule
The time capsule is a metal container measuring 5.5 x 7.5 x 1.5 inches (140 mm × 191 mm × 38 mm) and weighing about 10 pounds (4.5 kg). It was first removed from its location in 1855, at which time its contents were cleaned and documented. Additional items were added at this time and it was resealed in place. The capsule was again removed from its location in December 2014. An X-ray examination by conservationists at Boston’s Museum of Fine Arts revealed the presence of coins and other items. It was opened by professionals at a media event in the museum’s American Gallery on January 6, 2015.[2] Its contents include newspaper pages from the period and coins, including a 1652 pine shilling. There was also a silver plate, probably engraved by Revere, and a copper medal depicting George Washington. The objects were temporarily exhibited.[3] The capsule was sealed back into the cornerstone by Boston officials in a traditional ceremony on June 17, 2015. Added a mint set of 2015 US coins, including dollar coins from Presidents Lyndon B. Johnson, John F. Kennedy, Dwight D. Eisenhower, and Harry S. Truman. A silver plaque commemorating the event was also included.[4]

Time capsule ideas for families
A good time to create a family time capsule is when you are moving into or out of a new home. It could be fun for a new family to find this many years from now, or for your family to return and visit again.
Here are some ideas what your family can use to fill up your capsule:
A family tree
family photos
A list of demographics
An artifact from your neighbor
A price list
Old Cell Phones
A family questionnaire
A family heirloom
17. A family tree
A family tree will be so much fun for your family, future relatives or even strangers. This is your family story. It’s also a fun project to do some research about your ancestry and bring it all together. You can draw one, print it out, or use photos to bring the tree to life.
18. Family photos
A time capsule wouldn’t be complete without a picture or two of your family. Family photos put faces on the names of everyone who finds your pod.
In the future, when you open the capsule, it will be fun to see how you all looked and what pictures you chose to represent your family.
19. A list of demographics
Create a fact sheet with all of your family demographics. Write down the date, then list everyone’s names, ages, heights, and more.
20. An artifact from your neighborhood
Find a few things in your neighborhood that you feel represent your community well. This can be a take-away menu from the best restaurant in town, city maps from the town hall, a current picture of the main street or a welcome sign.
21. A price list
Make a price list for items your family uses regularly. When your time capsule is opened decades later, those prices have likely changed and will be an interesting find.
22. Old Cell Phones
That is fun! Collect all the old cell phones to put them in the capsule. It will be amazing to see how technology has evolved over the years and what different family members have been using at different times.
If someone finds your family capsule in the distant future, they will likely be amazed to have unearthed such a relic.
23. A family questionnaire
Write a list of questions for all family members to answer. Anyone would enjoy doing this in their own (hopefully legible) handwriting.
You can ask questions about how each family member sees themselves in 5, 10, or 20 years. You can ask for favorite songs, movies, and food.
24. A family heirloom
This can be jewelry, a piece of china, documentation or even a recipe. If you don’t feel comfortable putting a real family heirloom in the capsule, you can always take a picture of it to insert.
Tip: A cremation cremation diamond can be a unique heirloom to keep a person’s legacy alive for future generations. Some companies, like Eterneva, create lab grown diamonds and allow you to choose from multiple cuts and colors for your gemstone.

Post-Loss Tip: If you are the executor of a deceased loved one, the emotional and technical aspects of handling their backlog without a way to organize your process can be overwhelming. We have a post-loss checklist that will help you make sure your loved one’s family, estate, and other matters are in order.
29th anniversary or wedding cards from friends and family
Stuff some cards from friends and family in your time capsule so you can remember all the support you’ve had. It will also be fun to see the style of the cards from the year of your anniversary or wedding. You can also add an invitation to your anniversary party or wedding.
30. Your favorite bottle of wine or champagne
When the time capsule is large enough, add your favorite bottle of wine or champagne. These make for great keepsakes.
Make sure you empty (or drink) it first so it doesn’t go rancid when you open the time capsule. Who knows if this brand will even still exist when your capsule is discovered?
31. A dried flower from your wedding or first date
This is such a sentimental and beautiful item to keep in your capsule. A flower from a bouquet you shared together will work perfectly. Or you can pick a flower from your garden if you have a garden and dry it or put it in a flower and leaf press.
32. A piece of your wedding attire
Whether it’s a piece of your wedding dress or a tie, add something you wore on your wedding day. This will be sentimental for you in the future, and when someone else opens your capsule, it will be interesting for them to see the style of your wedding.
Tip: If you’re interested in something very unique to incorporate a loved one’s legacy (think a game, their motorcycle, or an instrument of your choice), you can order an urn from a store like Foreverence. You submit a design idea or sketch, then the company designs and 3D prints your urn, giving you a 100% unique container.
Time capsule ideas for seniors
Graduating from high school is a wonderful achievement and an important transition in life. Congratulations! You are going into adult life and there are so many memories from your childhood to cherish. Think about what you would like to see in 10, 20 or 50 years. If someone else finds the capsule, what would you like them to know about you and your hometown?
Here are some ideas of what to put in a time capsule for a high school senior:
end cap, cords or tassels
your yearbook
College Admissions Letters
A description of your hometown with pictures
Pictures of you with friends and family
A page from your journal or diary
33. Graduation cap, cords or tassels
Her hat, cords and tassels are the most important souvenirs of graduation. These make for great additions to your time capsule.
Maybe hats and robes will be a thing of the past in the future. If so, it will be so cool to get a glimpse of bygone traditions.
34. Your yearbook
There are a few times in your life when you’ll probably pull out that old yearbook and take a look. Get a copy for your time capsule and this is sure to be one of your favorite treasures. If a future stranger finds your pod instead, a yearbook is an incredible artifact.
35. College Admission Letters
If you’re going to college, further congratulations are in order! Getting into college is a great achievement. Preserve this special achievement by placing acceptance letters in your time capsule.
36. A description of your hometown with pictures
Write a one-page description of your home, school, and town. Be sure to include some pictures to show how everyone and everything looked like during your senior year.
37. Pictures of you with friends and family
They will want to remember how you looked now and who you were close to. As they say, a picture says more than a thousand words.
38. A page from your diary or diary
It will be so much fun reading this in the future! When someone else uncovers your capsule what an amazing find to discover your innermost thoughts and desires.
Time Capsule storage tips
Now that you’ve completed your time capsule, you’re probably wondering what to do with it. The choice is yours – both indoors and outdoors.
If you plan on burying your time capsule, make sure you bury it just a foot or less underground. Make sure everything is kept in the right materials or they will be completely ruined over the years. Be sure to research! Also, make sure you mark the grave site or create a map so it can be found in the future.
You can seal your time capsule and then store it somewhere inside. You could hide it somewhere or you could display it prominently. These make a great conversation piece – just don’t look inside!
One last tip: don’t put anything perishable in your time capsule. It can spoil the rest of your items, and nobody wants to find a moldy sandwich!

The “time capsule” was a new addition to this year’s census form, which consisted of a blank space for people to write any message they wanted.
The message will then be stored for 100 years before it is then released to the public and will make interesting reading for our great-grandchildren.
A few people have been eager to share their contribution to the time capsule on social media, and their posts have ranged from inspirational tributes to children who have passed away to a mother’s heartfelt contribution about life as a full-time carer – with plenty of lighthearted jokes in between.

Can I use Time Capsule as an external hard drive?
Yes, it is possible to just use the Time Capsule as a network drive to store files. You don’t have to use it for Time Machine backups. However, if you haven’t already purchased it, I would highly recommend against doing so for just using it for this purpose.
Items to put in your time capsule
1. Connect to the router – First, find an Ethernet cable lying around or unplug one from your Mac. Then plug one end into the <--> LAN slot on your router. Then connect the other end to your hard drive/time capsule via the WAN port. The WAN port is the one with a dotted circle printed on it.
2. Erase Disk – I would recommend doing this when the disk is on the populated side. Be warned, make sure you remove any important files from the drive. If you don’t know how to do this, skip this step for now and come back to it later. First, open the Airport Utility app. It should appear in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder in your Finder. Select your Time Capsule, then click Edit. Once in the menus, select Hard Drives at the top. Then click Erase Disk. This will erase everything from your hard drive. You keep the settings, but your data is unrecoverable. Again, only do this if you are sure there is nothing there that you need.
3. Factory reset – Don’t worry, this isn’t as daunting as it might sound. You will keep all your files, just clear your settings. First, get a bent paper clip or mechanical pencil. Next, disconnect all cables from the time capsule except the power supply. Instead, pull the plug out of the socket. Then press and hold the reset button, located next to the oval opening and below the printed play button. Stick the Time Capsule back into the wall while holding it down. Hold the button down for about 15 seconds.
4. Reconnect all cables. If you go into Airport Utility it should show up as Airport Time Capsule a7as5 or something like that on other devices. Click on it and set it up. Click Create New Network. Once in, set the name and password for it (you’ll use this later to unlock the hard drive), then go to the “Network” tab and change the network mode to “Off (Bridge mode)”. Then go to the “Wireless” tab and select “Off” for the network mode. Then click Refresh and wait a minute.
5. Go to Finder and click on the airport name you gave it. It should be under the shared tab, but if it’s not, click Finder in the top left of your screen and select Preferences. Then make sure all items under the Shared heading are checked. Go back and it should appear. Enter the password when prompted and away you go! Click on the Data folder and drag and drop all the items you want.
6. Only do this step if you skipped it. 2. Grab any files from the hard drive that you may need, then continue with the rest of Step 2.
I hope this helped you. It took me a long time to write this and would not have been possible without Bob Timmons. He was the one who helped me solve my problem, so props to him. If you have any other questions, please just reply to me and I will try to answer them. Good luck 🙂
What can you do with an old Apple Time Capsule?
It is primarily designed to perform as a router but also to be the backup destination for Time Machine. You can also attach a USB hard drive and/or USB printer to the Time Capsule and share them over the network to other clients.

A:
Well, the Time Capsule is a wireless internet router that also has a built-in hard drive. It’s designed primarily as a router, but also serves as a backup destination for Time Machine. You can also connect a USB hard drive and/or USB printer to the Time Capsule and share them with other clients over the network.
Is this something you need?
Does AirPort Time Capsule have to be plugged into router?
All replies. The Time Capsule needs to connect to your modem/router using a wired Ethernet cable connection, assuming that you want to have access to the Internet using the Time Capsule.

Not very convenient I’m afraid.
The network you set up on the Time Capsule doesn’t have Internet access, so you can’t download Time Capsule updates this way.
How fast is Apple Time Capsule WIFI?
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the Airport Time Capsule can reach data rates of up to 1.3Gbps, which is triple the 802.11n standard. 802.11ac Wi-Fi also provides double the channel bandwidth with 80MHz-wide channels providing more room for data to flow faster.

With the AirPort Time Capsule, you get a super-fast WiFi base station and easy-to-use backup device in one. It works with Time Machine in Mac OS X to automatically and wirelessly back up your Mac. Music, photos, videos, documents and even your apps and OS X settings are saved. The AirPort Time Capsule stores it all with 2TB of storage.
With three-stream 802.11ac technology, the Airport Time Capsule can achieve data rates of up to 1.3 Gbps, which is three times the 802.11n standard. 802.11ac Wi-Fi also offers twice the channel bandwidth with 80MHz wide channels that provide more space for faster data flow. If you are using an 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi device, Airport Time Capsule can also optimize the connection for these WiFi standards.
Apple redesigned the Airport Time Capsule so that it’s taller and the antennas are on the top of the device. Apple has also increased the number of antennas to six, three for 2.4GHz and three for 5GHz. The vertical redesign of the AirPort Time Capsule also contributes to a smaller footprint and more desk space.
AirPort Time Capsule makes setting up your new WiFi network quick and easy. That’s because there’s a setup wizard built into iOS and AirPort Utility for OS X. Once you plug in your AirPort Time Capsule and connect it to your DSL or cable modem, you can follow the simple instructions on your Mac or iOS device. There are no complicated steps to follow and no obscure terminology to learn. The setup wizard does all the work so you don’t have to.

Aluminum Time Capsules For Sale
Aluminum Time Capsule case
Creating a time capsule is a great way to preserve history and give future generations a glimpse of daily life when the capsule was created or buried. Time capsules are also a direct and personal way to preserve your legacy and connect with future generations. However, you don’t want to pick an ordinary item like a wooden or metal box without proper sealing and coating for your time capsule. Your items could be susceptible to water, wear and tear and corrosion.
At the Erie Landmark Company – a division of the Paul W. Zimmerman Foundries – we have unique aluminum time capsules for cities and communities, government organizations, historical societies, and schools and universities. These time capsule containers keep your items properly stored so they can last for many generations without deterioration or intrusion. Our 1/8″ thick aluminum time capsules are suitable for funerals or as an attractive display piece. When properly sealed, they resist moisture and air infiltration, providing an interior space with balanced oxygen and moisture levels. Our aluminum time capsules are powder coated black to also protect against intruding animals or insects and they are designed for lasting strength and will not corrode over time.
Prepare your Time Capsule
As you put together the items you want to include in your time capsule, consider who you expect to open the time capsule and what message you want to convey. Choose content carefully, stick to a specific time, event, place, or topic, and tailor articles to reflect the personality of your community or organization. As you pack the materials into your time capsule case, you should take all necessary precautions to ensure the items remain in good condition. With your new aluminum time capsule, Erie Landmark Company includes:
A moisture absorbing desiccant package
Oxygen absorbing package
A pack of clear archive pouches
A pack of acid-free paper
On request, an 8″ x 8″ metal photo plate
Before sealing your time capsule and after choosing your personal theme, separate your items with the polythene bags. Ideal time capsule items are typically manufactured items that are not made of rubber or plastic and may emit acidic fumes. Also exclude vegetation and plants. Remove all batteries from the devices to avoid corrosion. For paper products, use pens, inks and markers that are not water-soluble and jot down messages on the acid-free paper – consider copying each newspaper onto the acid-free paper to ensure it doesn’t get damaged. Be careful not to fold the paper to avoid sharp creases.
