You’ve finally made it to the part of this job where you actually polish out the aluminum and start to see the real shine! It’s time to polish and polish your aluminum.

Small polishing jobs

If you’ve followed my advice and properly prepared your aluminum with a focus on proper grinding technique, this should be a fairly simple process. All you need here is a clean cloth or two and aluminum polish.

Start by applying a small amount of the aluminum polish to the area. Continue wiping it into the surface in small, circular motions. Wipe off all polish with either a fresh cloth or a clean and unused side of the original cloth. Once all polish residue is gone, take another clean cloth and buff the entire surface using the same circular motions as before.

If you are polishing something that has food on it, such as B. an aluminum pan, do NOT use aluminum polish. This can be dangerous if ingested. Instead, you can use an equal amount of water and cream of tartar (potassium bitartrate) as a homemade DIY polishing paste.

Major polishing work

When you come to a job that could take a long time by hand or that requires a little too much muscle power, you can always lean on a reliable power tool to get you through the job. There are many options available for the actual cutting and polishing part of this process. For the buffing tool, most people find that one of the easiest and most efficient tools is an angle grinder with airway buffing wheels or traditional muslin buffing wheels.

Start by adding some of your coarsest abrasive compound to your stiffest buffing wheel. For the polishing process, we recommend using polishing paste sticks. Work in sections, buffing the entire surface, adding more polish as needed. When you’re done with this step, wipe off all residue completely and change your buffing pad.

Just like with sanding, you should start with the coarsest abrasive and work your way down. If using composite sticks, start with a gray composite buffing stick, followed by a brown Tripoli aluminum abrasive, then continue with white blush. This should normally achieve the high gloss finish you want, but for those of you with perfectionist tendencies you can finish with a green blush connecting stick to achieve the best possible aluminum shine.

Make sure to always use a different polishing wheel for each grinding compound. Mixing the compound on your disc defeats the purpose of getting to a finer abrasive with each step. However, you can reuse a buffing wheel in the future as long as you use the same mixture on it each time.

When you have finished your final polishing step, give your aluminum a final wipe with a clean cloth. At this point, you should be able to see yourself smiling back at your mirror finish.

3 ways to clean aluminum

1. Vinegar

Vinegar is an effective resource for cleaning aluminum. Mix 1 part white vinegar with 1 part water to create an acidic solution. The solution can then be used differently depending on the object to be cleaned. To clean and polish an exterior, dip a cloth in the mixture and scrub the item clean. For cookware made of aluminum such. B. potting, additional steps might prove helpful. To loosen the residue, first boil the water for the solution before adding the vinegar. Pour the hot solution into the pot, just enough to cover the residue, and let sit for about 30 minutes before removing with a sponge or cloth.

2. Delicate detergent

Apply the paste to the problem area and use an old toothbrush to scrub away the residue. Rinse well and dry for a shiny result.

Using acid-based solutions to clean aluminum To thoroughly clean the item, you need an acid-based solution. An acid is necessary to remove the oxidized coating that develops naturally on aluminum surfaces. You can buy commercial acidic cleaners that are designed for the product you want to clean.

You can make DIY aluminum cleaning options at home using items like tomatoes, lemons, or even apples.

While you can use acids like bleach or hydrofluoric acid, they have many negative side effects and don’t do a better job than the acids found in natural ingredients around your home.

Steps for cleaning brushed aluminum Take one of the cloths and wipe the surface of the aluminum thoroughly to remove any dirt or dust. If the cloth is not enough for you, you can use a non-abrasive cleaning pad to remove encrusted or dried-on dirt. If you still find residue and dirt that you cannot remove, fill the bucket with hot water and a few drops of dish soap. Take a cloth or the non-abrasive pad and soak it in the soapy water solution and then use it to remove the residue from the aluminium. Either use a gentle circular motion with the pad or follow the direction of the grain with the pad if the piece has a clear “grain”. Prepare a solution of 50% white vinegar and 50% water in a bucket. Use one of the cloths and dip it in the bucket, soaking up some of the solution. Take the wet cloth and rub it over the aluminum in a circular motion, paying particular attention to discolored areas. If you can’t remove the more discolored areas, make a paste of 1 tablespoon cream of tartar and about 1/2 tablespoon water (use enough water to create a pasty texture that isn’t too wet). Take the paste and coat the hard-to-clean areas and wait at least five to 10 minutes. Then take the wet cloth and rub the paste away. You can also use readily available items in your kitchen, like baking soda or lemon juice in place of cream of tartar. The paste is made in a ratio of 33% baking soda and 66% lemon juice. Once you’ve removed any discolored stains, take your glass cleaner and spray the aluminum all over. Take the remaining clean, dry cloth and use a gentle, circular motion to remove the glass cleaner. Once your aluminum item is dry, you can give it a real shine with a commercially available metal polish. Use one of the dry cloths to gently rub a small amount of the polish onto the aluminum to bring out the shine. Take a clean, dry cloth and use it to remove any polish residue on the surface. When cleaning brushed aluminum hubcaps, you can finish the hubcaps with a clear sealer to help the shine last longer.

How to Clean Cast Aluminum Cast aluminum is often found in kitchen cookware and some types of furniture. To clean aluminum castings you will need: 3 clean, dry cloths

A non-abrasive cleaning pad or soft-bristled toothbrush

cream of tartar

White vinegar (optional)

lemon juice

Fresh tomatoes, apples or rhubarb (optional)

Rubber gloves to protect your hands

A bucket or spray bottle

Steps to Clean Cast Aluminum As with other types of aluminum, you should first remove any dirt or debris on the aluminum. You can do this using the same steps for brushed aluminum. If the cast aluminum item you are cleaning is a saucepan or pan and food is burned on the bottom or sides, you can remove it while cooking. Add water to the pan and let it boil for a few minutes. Then take a wooden or plastic spatula and use it to remove the softened burnt residue from the pan. If your first attempt at removing burnt food isn’t entirely successful, repeat the process but add an acid to the boiling water. Possible alternatives include white vinegar, cream of tartar, lemon or lime juice, chopped rhubarb or tomato, or even chopped apples.

Let the water boil for 10 to 15 minutes and then use the spatula to remove the food.

Repeat as needed until all burnt food is removed. If you still have food left over after all these attempts, you can try a very fine steel wool. Be sure to use it gently and move with the grain. Remember that steel wool can scratch your pots and pans, so be careful with this step. If your pot or pan is lightly soiled and you can remove any residue with a cloth or pad, you can proceed to the next cleaning step. Add four cups of water and three tablespoons of cream of tartar to the pan and bring to a boil. Let cook for at least 10 to 15 minutes. You can empty the water and cream of tartar solution from the pot and let cool until you can handle it. Take a cloth, non-abrasive pad or toothbrush and gently scrub the pan in a circular motion. Once you feel you’ve scrubbed the pot or pan clean, make a mixture in a ratio of 1/2 cup lemon juice to 1-1/2 cups water, or substitute vinegar for the lemon juice. Dip a cloth in the mixture and use it to rinse the pan of the cream of tartar solution. You may find it easier to take an empty spray bottle and pour the mixture in and then use that to spray the mixture onto the aluminum surface and then wipe it off with a cloth. Finally, take a dry, clean cloth and wipe the pot or pan clean.

How to Clean Wrought Aluminum Wrought aluminum is often found on older items and antiques. To clean wrought aluminum items you will need: Clean, dry cloths

A non-abrasive cleaning pad

cream of tartar

White vinegar or lemon juice (optional)

Mild liquid soap for washing dishes

Rubber gloves to protect your hands

A large saucepan

Steps to Clean Wrought Aluminum Take saucepan and fill with: 2 cups water

4 tablespoons cream of tartar

1 cup of your choice of acid (white vinegar or lemon juice) Place the saucepan on the stove and bring to a boil. If you’re cleaning a larger piece, you may want to double this recipe. You can do this next step either in your sink, a large bucket or plastic tub, or in your bathtub. When using the sink or bath, cap the drain to prevent water from escaping. Pour the cooked mixture into the sink, tub, or bucket, and then place your aluminum item in the water and let it soak for at least ten minutes. For heavily blackened wrought aluminum items, you may want to let it soak longer. You can now drain the water mixture. Fill your soaking area with hot but not boiling water, then add about a teaspoon of mild liquid dish soap. Allow the aluminum items to soak in this new mixture for at least five minutes. Take one of the cloths or the non-abrasive scouring pad and gently rub the items to clean them. When all of the black has been removed, remove the item from the water and rinse to remove any soap residue. Dry thoroughly with a clean, dry cloth. For added shine you can use a commercial metal polish such as Hagerty 100 All Metal Polish on the clean and dried part.

How to clean oxidized aluminum Oxidation is a process that occurs in aluminum over time and results in a dull appearance to your aluminum items. It may also appear “stained” with a chalky, white substance. You can find oxidation on almost any aluminum item, from pots and pans to appliances to the side panels of RVs and trucks. To clean oxidized aluminum items you will need: Clean, dry cloths

A non-abrasive cleaning pad or soft-bristled cleaning brush

fine steel wool (optional)

Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish

Mild liquid soap for washing dishes

Rubber gloves to protect your hands

White vinegar (optional)

a bucket

Microfiber cleaning cloth (optional)

Denatured alcohol (optional)

Aluminum oxidation remover (optional)

A lemon (optional)

salt (optional)

Steps to Clean Oxidized Aluminum Start by removing any dirt or debris on the aluminum with a cloth or the cleaning brush. Take the bucket and add about a tablespoon of the liquid dish soap and a gallon of warm water. Dampen the brush, pad or cloth with the water and soap mixture and gently clean the aluminum. Be careful not to press too hard as you don’t want to damage the surface. After you have cleaned the entire surface, rinse the cloth, pad or brush and then use it to remove any soap residue. Let the aluminum dry on its own. If the oxidation has not been thoroughly cleaned you can take aluminum cleaner such as Mothers Mag & Aluminum Polish and apply it very gently to the surface with the fine steel wool. Rinse the polish off with a wet sponge or cloth, making sure it’s completely removed.

Using a DIY Solution to Clean Oxidized Aluminum If you prefer to use a homemade solution, try vinegar. Mix 1 tablespoon of white vinegar with 2 cups of warm water in a bucket, or use this ratio to make a larger amount, depending on what you’re cleaning. Dampen a cloth or non-abrasive pad with the vinegar and water mixture, then use it to gently clean the aluminum surface. When you’re done, use a clean, damp cloth to wipe away any excess mixture residue on the aluminum. Let the aluminum dry on its own.

Treating Stubborn Stains on Oxidized Aluminum If, after trying the above methods, you still see dirt on the aluminum, such as: B. Fingerprints, you can take a few extra steps to deal with those stubborn stains. Take a microfiber cloth and use it to remove them, gently wiping them with the cloth. You can spray a little denatured alcohol on the smudges and fingerprints to wipe them off with the cloth. For hard-to-remove stains, you can also use a commercial product like Meguiar’s Oxidation Remover. It can be applied with the microfiber cloths or a cotton terry towel and wiped off with the microfiber cloths after cleaning. A third option for hard-to-remove oxidation stains is to use lemon and salt. Take a whole lemon and cut it in half. Pour some salt onto a bowl, then press the lemon, cut side down, onto the salt so the crystals stick to the lemon. Then use the lemon, cut and salted side down, to rub the oxidized areas on the aluminum. Use a damp cloth to wipe away the residue when you’re done. If you are cleaning a large surface, you can also use lemon juice squirted onto a cloth, brush, or cleaning pad.

How to Clean Tarnished Aluminum Tarnished aluminum refers to the appearance of dark or dull areas on aluminum items such as the bottoms of pots and pans, utensils and more. Cleaning tarnished aluminum is very similar to other aluminum cleaning methods and you should start with the steps for cleaning cast aluminum. If this method still doesn’t remove tarnish, an additional option is to either use a commercial tarnish cleaner like Brasso Metal Polish, or you can use borax, which contains sodium tetraborate, a natural cleaning agent.

Cleaning Tarnished Aluminum with Borax Make a borax paste by mixing 1/4 cup of borax with a few drops of water in a small bucket. Add a few drops at a time until you get the right consistency. You want to make a paste that you can apply to the aluminum, so it should be wet, but not so wet that it falls apart or drips off when you apply it. Take the brush or toothbrush and gently dab some borax paste on the tarnished areas of the aluminum. Leave it on for at least 10 minutes. For deep-seated stains, you can leave it on for up to an hour if necessary. Take the brush or toothbrush and gently rub the paste into the stain. You should see the tarnish peel off as you do this. Take a damp, clean cloth and wipe away all traces of the borax paste. If tarnish remains, repeat the process. When you’re done, take a clean, dry cloth and dry the area thoroughly.

Some worry that the steel wool will contaminate the alum and cause the piece to lose its original appearance. This affects more shiny aluminum on bikes and cars than pots and pans. Here are some tips for cleaning with steel wool.

Tips for cleaning with steel wool

It is generally advisable to provide samples of the material to be used for finishing trials to determine the required operations and quality standard for approval.

The process of nickel plating aluminum is to etch the surface in either an alkaline or acidic solution to provide a key and remove any dirt or film.

The component is then coated with a zincate film, known as a conversion coating, to allow the surface to be electroplated with copper or nickel.
