Today we’re going to show you how to use Quick Sheen’s High Gloss All Metal Polish. Before we begin, we want to take a moment to point out the viscosity of the compound. Many other polishes are water thin and some of them are a thick paste; We’ve found that keeping it between the two in viscosity gets you about 3-4x the national average as far as your coverage goes.

How to Use Quick Sheen’s All-Metal Polish: From start to finish

For best results we start by taking about a quarter size drop of the polish and patting it lightly on a microfiber towel on some of the softer metals and a terry cloth polishing cloth for some of your more aggressive surfaces that show a lot of oxidation and oxidation rust.

This represents a permanent machine press with a layer of oxidation. The first thing you will notice when using our polish is how quickly it starts working. It actually cleans right on contact.

Start by wiping up, no need to buff vigorously, then work the polish into the metal with light buffing. If you have severe oxidation and rust, we recommend a maximum of 3 to 4 pounds of pressure to cut through the oxidation.

After you clean and polish metal, it usually starts to oxidize again and becomes dull again. Aluminum dulls after about two weeks, silver and brass usually become cloudy again after just 24 hours. That’s why Quick Sheen was designed to include a built-in sealer. It’s basically like a clear coat but in a polished form. So the more you polish your metal, the more you seal the metal – similar to a professional concentrate. When we’re done polishing, when polishing car rims, we often reapply about a quarter drop of polish per wheel. You want to brush it lightly over the finish again, it doesn’t have to be perfect, just apply it and this time let it dry; like a wax. Just remember it’s not like a wax where you have to chase and buff it off, it will bond easily to the end. You don’t have to polish off this coat. Just like before, it is wiped off immediately after drying.

After sealing, no more water comes on the metal. No water stains, brake dust does not stick to it and literally flies off the surface. Quick Sheen Sealant is even heat resistant so it’s safe under the hood. Valve covers, manifolds and exhaust tips will shine and it will prevent blueing up to 600 degrees and if you have any right now don’t worry the polish will eliminate them.

After it has been cleaned and polished, we recommend reapplying it every six months in the future. If you have chrome, instead of making two applications if you don’t have oxidation, take a dot of the polish and apply it once. Instead of making two applications, you can only make one. Apply like any other type of metal. Let it dry, it takes two minutes, you’ll see when it’s done it powders into a veil so as soon as you see it comes off right away!

I know they sell commercial stainless steel cleaners, but I really prefer something more economical and eco-friendly. As in other areas of my life, I try to avoid toxic chemicals whenever possible. Sometimes you just can’t. But whenever possible, I will always choose something that protects our planet.

How do you make stainless steel shine?

You can try polishing your stainless steel with plain water and a cloth. If your item is relatively new and you are careful not to leave water stains, it will likely work well for you. One of the best things about metal is its versatility. It’s strong, can be incorporated into almost anything, and can be polished to a beautiful mirror finish. In fact, one of the most common questions we get asked is how to polish metal. In particular, people want to know how difficult it is and if they can polish it.

In short, the answer is yes! All metals can be polished. Although some polish more easily than others. But good news is that there are many methods and tools to polish metals.

Power tools are magic when it comes to polishing. Drills, dremmels, rotary buffers, rotary sanders, etc. will make your life so much easier. Sandpaper and buffing bits/wheels are available for all of these tools and are usually worth the investment.

Other than that, no power tools are required. Archaeological evidence shows that humans have been polishing metal to a greater or lesser extent since we figured out how to use metal some 5,000 years ago. Power tools have only really become commonplace in metal polishing in the last hundred years. Sandpaper, Brillo pads, fine steel wool, and buffing pads are all good for buffing. However, it will be slower than using power tools.

Metal polishes are the last “tool” you need. Technically, polishing is not required. Soapy water, WD-40, and even toothpaste can be used to polish metals, but real polishes work much better and much faster.

What is the process?

It is actually quite simple. Metal naturally shines, but over time it oxidizes and becomes scratched. The oxidation and small indentations created by scratches prevent light from reflecting back, affecting your shine. By polishing you are grinding away the oxidation and also a very thin layer of the metal itself. It smoothes the metal, eliminates bumps and lets it shine again.

You start with a coarse grit sandpaper, anywhere between 40 and 80 grit. Then simply grind the metal to be polished. Make sure all large scratches are removed. Then sand it again with a finer sandpaper, somewhere around 100 or 160 grit. Sand everything evenly again. Sand it a third time with finer paper, about 200. Then repeat this step over and over with finer paper. The exact grit doesn’t matter much and will vary depending on who you ask. Depending on the condition of the metal and how much you’re grinding, you’ll see 4-8 passes.

It is important to use even and generally light to moderate pressure during this step. If you press too hard, you’ll grind away too much material and create more divots. And applying pressure unevenly can ruin the polish and create uneven surfaces. It’s also important to find a balance in speed. Don’t rush or you’ll miss things, but if you go slowly and linger, you can blur areas.

Polishing and buffing of metal

Eventually, you’ll use sandpaper that’s about 2,000 to 4,000 grit. When that’s done, wipe down the metal and then apply some polishing solution to a polishing cloth or pad. Polish the metal with medium pressure. As you do this you will notice black dirt all over your polishing pad and sometimes the metal. This is most often the wiping of the metal oxide.

Wipe again with a clean microfiber cloth. If it looks good, call it there! If not to your satisfaction, apply more polishing solution and buff more.

Check the results after each round of polishing until you are satisfied with the result.

Since the early 1900’s, car manufacturers have used chrome to give their vehicles a beautiful and durable finish. While chrome certainly creates a wonderful look, it’s a common misconception that it doesn’t rust.

Chromium, like other metals, reacts readily when exposed to oxygen and moisture, and while it is tougher than other metals, rust can form over time. The good news is that there are effective ways to remove rust from chrome and prevent future rusting.

Easily remove chrome from rust

When you’ve invested in a vehicle with a shiny chrome finish, you want to keep it that way. Chrome is not actually a metal per se, but rather a coating applied to another metal to create a decorative feature and to protect the underlying metal from corrosion and damage.

When you’re done removing the rust, wipe the entire area you worked on with a damp cloth to rinse off any residue. Dry thoroughly with a dry cloth.
