“Not to Speak Is to Speak. Not to Act Is to Act.”

“Not to speak is to speak. Not acting is acting.” – July 14, 2014

The quote comes from the inimitable Dietrich Bonhoeffer. The full quote is:

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us blameless. Not speaking means speaking. Not acting is acting.”

Last week I wrote about what I call the gratitude of gratitude, the idea that not only do we benefit from giving to others, but that the benefit itself must be grounded in gratitude.

Now before us is that seemingly impossible combination of living in the face of evil and anchoring our gifts in gratitude. Lies and perversions are thrown at us with such alacrity that we can be forgiven for thinking we are being overly critical of being outraged at mere crime. We are told that such allegations are untrue or unimportant or both. What does it have to do with our life, our meager life, our unannounced and negligible life? Greater things are happening all around us, which, like any omelet, require broken eggs.

After a while we discard this or that detail in favor of a larger, less descriptive fact. It is no longer this week’s scandal that upsets us, but the scandal of the scandal itself. When this happens we lose our “right” to complain, since complaints must relate to specific acts, and an immense range in general Talking about scandals may help you breathe, but not your argument.

It is not easy to come up with a scenario to illustrate the scandal of the scandal. Just as it is easier to understand gratitude than the gratitude of gratitude, it is also easier to deal with scandal than scandal after scandal.

For myself, I’m beginning to think that the most important determinant of a government that has shocked us has less to do with ideology, honesty, or integrity than we think. A look at our history will show that we’ve already had very terrible ideologues (think Wilson), men with no honesty (more than a few here), and as far as integrity goes, it’s so little used in discussion that I’m afraid we might well be at a time when people don’t really know what integrity means when it comes to government.

None of these problems are new to us. What is new, and perhaps the most important characteristic failure of the present, is that there appear to be no adults in the White House. I think that’s the main reason why people can’t talk to each other, let alone compromise. Have you ever tried to compromise with a ten year old? While being a child is not the worst thing for the man, it can be the worst thing for the country.

If children don’t speak or don’t act, there are no consequences; In the real world of men and women, not to speak, to speak is not to act, is to act.

Quote by Dietrich Bonhoeffer: “Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God…”

“Silence in the face of evil is itself evil: God will not hold us blameless.

Not speaking means speaking.

Not acting is acting.”

– Dietrich Bonhoeffer

Update on a Spurious Bonhoeffer Quote: Not to Speak is to Speak, Not to Act is to Act – Warren Throckmorton

In late August I published an examination of a popular quote commonly but incorrectly attributed to Dietrich Bonhoeffer:

Silence in the face of evil is itself evil. God will not hold us blameless. Not speaking means speaking. Not acting means acting.

The quote is not found in Bonhoeffer’s writings, and no other primary source has been found. The first appearance of the entire quote that I can find is in a 1998 newsletter from the American Interfaith Institute. The newsletter reported on a museum exhibit featuring Bonhoeffer. The quote was placed in quotation marks on the Bonhoeffer exhibit, as if Bonhoeffer had said it but without the quote. The quote was popularized by Eric Metaxas, who still attributes the quote to Bonhoeffer, although he has declined to give a primary source for it.

Today I would like to present a source for part of the quote that predates 1998. In Robert K. Hudnut’s 1971 book A Sensitive Man and the Christ, he argues that even a sensitive man must act when necessary.

There are two aspects of this passage that might tie it to possible misattribution to Bonhoeffer. One is Hudnut’s call for the church not to remain silent in the face of social ills. The second is the reference to Niemöller and the resistance against the Nazis. Due to poor memory and lack of citations, someone could have reworked this into a quote about the Church’s non-silence and attributed it to Niemöller’s colleague Dietrich Bonhoeffer.

For inaction is action itself, one can go back to 1945, when Francis McPeek, in an essay entitled Inaction is Action, said that the Church’s inaction is a form of political action.

For “God will not hold us blameless,” one can find many references to this phrase by going to Google Books and putting the phrase in quotation marks. The links returned go back to 1681.

The Hudnut quote was pointed out to me by a Twitter user. I want to thank him but I can’t find the tweet. If my helper is reading, please identify yourself in the comments.
