Trader Joe’s Mango Mini Mochi Review – Freezer Meal Frenzy
Mochi is no ordinary dessert. It’s a traditional Japanese treat with a rich history. During the Japanese New Year, which falls on December 25-28, the dessert is prepared during an event called mochitsuki. After the event, the treat can be enjoyed all year round. We’re guessing Trader Joe’s Mango Mini Mochi isn’t made in a traditional ceremony, but it’s a great way to experience this unusual snack.
While there are 15 mochi per box, the box itself is pretty small. These aren’t massive treats; Each will give you a bite or two of mochi. When Trader Joe describes these as “mini”, they really aren’t kidding.
It’s a little difficult to get these mini mochi balls out of the packaging when they’re still frozen; We had to scoop ours out with a spoon. Luckily, once you’ve managed to rip these goodies loose, you don’t have to worry anymore. Each piece of mochi is bite-sized and easy to eat without making a mess.
This mochi doesn’t have the juicy texture of mango, but it does have the same sweet and smooth taste. It’s very sweet but not sugary, and it doesn’t have the sour bite that citrus fruits often have. This was made with real mangoes and you can definitely tell.
If you’ve never tried mochi before, be aware that it has an unusual texture that can be off-putting. It’s cold like ice cream, but it’s gooey like soft candy. While mochi is made from rice, you can’t actually taste or feel rice when you bite into one of these treats. The only thing you will taste are fruity flavors.
Anyone who likes both mochi and mango will definitely want to try this treat. If you’re new to mochi, Trader Joe’s Mango Mini Mochi isn’t a bad place to start. Since each treat is so small, you can try mochi with little commitment. These fruity, bite-sized treats aren’t for everyone — our staff members were quite divided — but they have a lot of appeal.

I am so blown away by this product! My friend is into that massive mochi kick so he tried all the flavors TJ’s has to offer. This was next on his list and unfortunately it won’t be a buyback. First let me say that the mango flavor was really good. It wasn’t overly sweet but had the perfect amount of mango flavor. The problem with this product was the sherbet consistency. I really like sorbets but it was way too icy. I felt like I was chewing on ice. I let the mochi sit for 5 minutes and there was no change. Biting into the soft rice dough and then chewing the sorbet was not enjoyable.
Unfortunately I will not buy this product again, but I will definitely get a box of mango sorbet. Unfortunately I can’t get past the texture and am nervous about the other non-dairy options. Does the Thai tea mochi have the same consistency?!
