CHARACTER USE

Candy is a popular sign with toddlers because it allows them to request something they like. Remember, if your baby is craving sweets, you don’t have to automatically give them them. If you want to decline the request, acknowledge the request, but then firmly tell them they can’t have candy right now.

Search tips and hints

Search/Filter: Enter a keyword in the filter/search box to display a list of available words with the All option selected. If necessary, click the page number. Click on the blue link to look up the word. For best results, enter part of the word to see variations of the word.

Screenshot of the search dictionary

Alphabetic Letters: It is useful for 1) a one-letter word (like A, B, etc.) and 2) very short words (e.g. “to”, “he”, etc.) around the words and pages narrow down the list.

For best results, enter a short word in the search box, then select the alphabetical letter (and page number if needed) and click the blue link.

Screenshot of the search dictionary

Don’t forget to click back on “All” if you’re looking for another word with a different first letter.

If you can’t find a word (maybe you missed it) but still see a list of links, keep searching until the links disappear! Sharpen your eye or maybe hone your alphabetical indexing skills. 🙂

Add a word: This dictionary is not complete; ASL characters are constantly being added to the dictionary. If you don’t find a word/character, you can submit your request (only if a single link doesn’t appear in the result).

Videos: The first video may NOT be the answer you are looking for. There are multiple characters for different meanings, contexts, and/or variations. It is highly recommended to scroll down to the next search field.

Video Speed: Signing Too Fast in the Videos? See HELP in the footer.

Grammar: ASL has its own grammar and structure in sentences that function differently than English. For plurals, verb inflections, word order, etc., learn the grammar in the ASL Learn section. Use present verbs and base words to search the dictionary. If you’re looking for said, look up the word say. If you are looking for an adjective, try the noun or vice versa. E.g. The ASL characters for French and France are the same. When searching for a plural word, use a singular word.

Inflection: Many ASL words, especially verbs, in the dictionary are a “base”; Note that many of them are grammatically inflectible within ASL clauses. Some entries have example sentences.

Variation: Some ASL characters show regional (and generational) variation in North America. Some common variations are included as much as possible, but for specific local variations, interact with your local community to learn their local variations.

Contextual meaning: Some ASL characters in the dictionary may not mean the same thing in different contexts and/or ASL sentences. You will see some examples in video sets.

ASL is very lively and infinitely constructible like any spoken language. The best way to properly use ASL is to immerse yourself in daily verbal interactions and conversations with Deaf/Ameslans (or ASLians).

“trick-or-treat” American Sign Language (ASL)

Teresa,

You won’t find a “perfect” sign for trick or treating.

“Trick or Treats” could be signed “TRICK CANDY”.

Conceptually, there is no need for an “or”. Hearing children do not mean it literally as a choice. They make a statement that earns them candy. If they literally meant give me candy or I’ll tip over your outhouse, then I might see a need for the “or” concept. If the “or” concept is used at all in this “statement,” it would be a very, very small body shift.

COSTUME is referred to in connection with the character CLOTHING. You grasp the idea that you are talking about Halloween. Then you ask someone what clothes they will wear. It goes without saying that you are talking about a “costume”.

If you need to make it clear, you can sign “HALLOWEEN CLOTHES” and eliminate the second set of Halloween. Because it is a compound character.

Matches: This is a noun-verb pair with “light-a-match”. Use a little double motion to mean “matches.” Note: context can also be used to change the meaning of “light a match”. fit. For example, suppose I signed: YOU HAVE “LIGHT A MATCH?” That would mean, “Do you have a match?” (meaning “Got any matches?”)

The sign “LIGHTER” (flame) is made by holding an imaginary lighter and clicking the switch twice.
