Q&A Session 1: Karen from U-Roast-It Coffee

Q&A 1: Karen from U Roast It

In the first of our new Vancouver coffee people Q&A sessions, we chat with Karen, the founder of U-Roast-It-Coffee, a new Vancouver startup focused on importing green coffee beans for roasting at home as well as specializes in all kinds of coffee brewing and roasting equipment. We caught up with Karen at 33 Acres Brewing for a 10 question session (and lots of beer waffles).

1) Who are you and where are you from?

I was born in Jamaica and came to Canada when I was 7 years old. Coffee is part of my family history as my grandfather, Keble Munn, was the owner of the Mavis Bank Central Factory, a highly regarded maker of Jamaica Blue Mountain Coffee. I grew up around the factory and coffee processing, from the farmers who pick the beans to the roasted end product. This is something you didn’t appreciate as a kid, but it’s something I definitely appreciate now!

2) Tell us about U-Roast-It Coffee, what is your business about?

I started U-Roast-It Coffee in April of this year because I needed high quality, green coffee beans for the do-it-yourself home roaster. Most people I spoke to got their beans from US sources, which greatly increases the cost of the beans. I ship to the lower mainland for free, so the savings start there.

My motto is, “Start a home roasting revolution, one bean at a time.” My reason for doing this is to bring roasting to the homes of the masses and the people (who currently drink a lot of coffee but don’t know you can can roast at home) to show that it can be done quickly and easily. It doesn’t have to be a mysterious process that only coffee shops do… anyone can roast beans that taste great!

In addition to the green beans, I also sell home roasters, brewers, and reusable cups for a complete experience.

3) How easy is it to get started with home roasting?

You can start very cheaply (Air Popcorn Popper) and work your way up to a nice roasting machine (Behmor) if you really put your mind to it.

Roasting at home just got even easier because there’s a developer and designer, Ben McMahen, who lives in Vancouver and has created a home roasting app called Roast Buddy. It is a FREE app available on the App Store or Google Play that helps the home roaster to record statistics and data from their roasts. It contains a lot of great information that will be useful for anyone just starting out at home frying.

Editor’s note: You can get the Roast Buddy app here for iOS users and here for Android.

4) How was your first home roast?

It was actually a disaster because I didn’t know what I was doing at all! I used a stovetop popcorn popper and ended up toasting it too quickly at too high a temperature. Not only were the beans charred, but my kitchen was FULL of smoke and the whole house smelled like burnt beans. Since then I’ve been using the Nesco Professional Home Roaster and now a Behmor. These are a lot easier to use and the beans have been roasted to perfection ever since!

5) What new/upcoming product or coffee bean do you think people should know about?

There are many different countries and regions that the beans are sourced from and I think the most important thing now is to source the beans from small plantations. Sophisticated places like Vancouver like micro roasters and micro farmers and would rather support the little guy than the big business. It seems like the more obscure the place the beans come from, the better!

Reusable coffee mugs are the latest trend in coffee hardware. We all know that most “to go” coffee mugs from the cafes are not easy to recycle because of the lining. Consumers are demanding more from companies when it comes to recycling, and in return, companies have responded. Stojo and KeepCup come to mind as two leaders in the reusable cup industry.

6) What is your favorite coffee shop at the moment?

I don’t really have a favourite. If they overflow, I’m happy!

7) Tell us about a cup of coffee that blew your mind.

Honestly, I had a Guatemalan drink at Astro Coffee in an area of Detroit known as Corktown and I was blown away! It was the smoothest cup of coffee I’ve ever had, hands down. The only downside was that the cup was too small and I couldn’t order a big one!

8) If you could only have one type of coffee for the rest of your life, what would it be?

It would be Ethiopian! I love the taste of these beans. Jamaica Blue Mountain is great but my wallet wouldn’t let it be the only coffee I’ll drink for the rest of my life!

9) What is your favorite sweet snack with coffee?

I love having crunchy sesame schnapps and a handful of homemade granola with my coffee!

10) If you could choose one person, dead or alive, real or fictional, to have coffee with, who would it be and why?

I would say it would be my grandfather, Keble Munn. Growing up I didn’t appreciate his experience and knowledge and now I wish he were there so I could hear his stories and take his advice. He had so much knowledge about coffee his whole life and I wish he could have imparted it to me. He drank coffee and knew all about its flavors and nuances, so sitting down for a cup of Blue Mountain with him would have been awesome.
