How to peak and tune ?
Most of them are very basic and the only reason he’s asking so much is because of the old P.T. Barnum expression: “A fool is born every minute”. People really believe that radios have little wizards within them and these “radio whisperers” can magically defy the laws of physics. They make a buck off people who aren’t tech savvy and break their radios at the same time. The reason it’s expensive is because people will pay for it
“Peaking and tuning” generally refers to illegal increases in transmit power. And in general, someone thinks that they can magically improve the audio chain and really mangled the output.
In all honesty, there can be some benefits to “tuning” the radio. Get a good service monitor and really look at your output. You can generally (if you can find a schematic) fine-tune the sound of the rig and make sure it’s performing to its full potential. Some come from the factory with only 2 watts. But you need to understand the relationship between performance gain and “range”. Most real world radios use a formula of 6dB per “S” unit on a calibrated meter. So in order for someone to sound 1 S unit better (or pounds or whatever the lingo is), you need to double your power. TWICE. So if you’re using the legal 4-watt radio and the other guy hears you on the S-3, if you go down to 8 watts, he’ll hear you on the S-3.5. 8 to 16 watts bring you to S-4. Giving 16 to 32 watts and S-4.5 and going from 32 to 62 watts gets you to S-5.
NO CB transistors can do this. They would have to be replaced at this level. But people never replace the guts that power the transistors, so the whole radio is built on a garbage platform that can’t handle the new power demands. And the benefit is zero. The change from S-3 to S-5 is a rather small climb. It will make VERY little difference to the receiving station. And another problem is the reception. You now have a limited receiver or “alligator station”. Getting a decent antenna can easily outperform your massive boost in transmit power and also provide the same gain in reception. PLUS, you won’t be breaking any laws.
However, what a lot of people do is add some aftermarket kits that REALLY sacrifice audio quality for power delivery. Most of these radios use transistors for their output, which are only rated for 10 watts (since AM CBs are limited to 4 watts). Peaking generally overdrives these transistors to the point of failure, causing them to “splatter” and transmit everywhere. This can easily be achieved by making the audio (what you say into the mic) “louder” on the radio and therefore driving the transistors harder. The problem, as I mentioned, is that you sound like you’re yelling into a restroom.
The other oddity I don’t understand is the idea of ”swing”. People think it’s nice to have a radio deadkey at 5 watts and “swing” up to 30 watts. I have no idea where that came from or why it’s considered good. It makes the radios sound like forever loving trash.
In reality, there are dozens of ways to sharpen, tune, and ruin CBs, but NONE of which I’ve seen are technically sound. If you really want to break the law, buy a HF ham radio and convert it for CB use. It will perform better, sound better, and not splatter across the entire RF spectrum. And it’s just as illegal as “peaking and tuning” a CB. If you’re really into modding CBs, a simple Google search will provide plenty of information. What you will see, however, are 1,000 ideas on how and what to do, all from different people. Wade through them carefully.

UNIDEN PRO-505XL: The Most Bang For The Buck;
I bought a new Uniden Pro-505 XL CB radio from DTB Radio. I had it tuned and aligned by DTB and from what I’m told it’s a pretty good performance for a compact radio. It’s in my mail right now, waiting to pick it up maybe Saturday. I also ordered an RF Limited TRB-X2 dual speaker talkback kit to install in the 505. Also, I ordered some green, red and UV LEDs from LED Lights, Bulbs & LED Lighting Accessories – SUPER BRIGHT LEDS to change the LCD display to a green color when receiving and red to illuminate the display when transmitting. At a later date I might get an Astatic 636 mic for it. The talkback/echo knobs are housed in a special housing that is attached to the lower radio case with pop rivets. It sounds like chrome plating on a Cowpie but I think it would make a nice radio out of it. Another idea. I want to wire it up so I can monitor channels through a PA horn. My TRC-428 Nine Scan has this feature. Here are some other references: DTB Radio’s website was hacked, that will have to come later
