Before you start setting up your DVD player, make sure you have connected all the cables and turned on the devices. It goes without saying, but I’ll say it anyway: Make sure the batteries in the remote are working.

How to set up the universal remote control

Locate the SETUP button on the GE universal remote. Press and hold the SETUP button until the red light comes on. Release the SETUP button. The remote control is now in setup mode.

Select the device to set up

Briefly press the device button you want to set up. For example, when programming your TV, press and release the TV button. Use the number buttons to enter the universal remote control code. Entering the Codes method directly

Remove the battery cover and batteries from the battery compartment and locate the model number on the label. Manually turn “ON” the device (TV, DVD player, DVR, etc.) that you want to pair with the remote control. Press and hold the “Setup” button for a few seconds until the indicator light turns “RED”. Press the button of the coordinating device, e.g. “TV”, “DVD” or “AUX”. Enter the code (it can be either 3 digits or 4 digits). If the entered code is correct, the red indicator light will go out. Press the “POWER” button. If the device turns off, you have successfully programmed this device into the remote control.

Automatic GE remote control code search method

Turn “ON” your TV or other device you want to control. Press and hold the “Setup” button for a few seconds until the indicator light turns “RED”. Press the button of the coordinating device, e.g. “TV”, “DVD” or “AUX”. Press the “POWER” button to switch off the device. (Note: If you are using a V2, V3 or V4 remote control and programming a DVD player, press “PLAY” and wait for the unit to start playing.) After 2 seconds, press the “POWER /PLAY” button. The device is switched “OFF”. (Note: V2, V3 and V4 remotes will automatically send the command every two seconds.) Press the “ENTER/OK” button on the remote to lock the code. The indicator light goes out when you have successfully entered the code.

After watching a movie on my TV over the weekend, I put the remote control on the table and went to bed.

When I woke up the next morning, to my utter horror, I found that my dog ​​had managed to rip off all the buttons and had done extensive damage, rendering the remote control on the TV non-functional.

Now I know I could have controlled the TV using the physical buttons on the TV itself, but after a long day at work I just want to sit back and surf through the channels without having to get up every few minutes.

With a little research on the internet I was able to find some options to work around this problem as well as methods to improve my overall viewing experience.

Of course! I ordered a new remote control, but in the meantime I wanted to research alternative methods of controlling my TV.

Universal remote apps can be downloaded for Android devices provided they have a built-in IR (infrared) blaster or an attached IR dongle. If your phone doesn’t have an IR blaster, you can use an IR dongle with it.

Universal remote control apps for non-smart TVs

Universal remote apps are widely available for Android and iOS, but before downloading any software, consider whether your phone has an IR blaster.

This allows your phone to seamlessly connect to a non-smart TV, as these TVs don’t have wireless connections.

In some cases, you may come across remote controls that require special software that is not generally available to the public.

This means you need to hire an outside auditor to set up your remote, which can be expensive.

A remote with a simple setup guide should be up and running in about 15 minutes out of the box.

Follow the instructions in the manual and pair the remote with the TV and then proceed to map the buttons on the remote accordingly.
