Roofing Superstore Help & Advice

VELUX sun tunnels are popular for their easy installation and much more. How do you keep up with cleaning to keep your sun tunnel in good condition? Check out the guide below to learn more!

Table of Contents:

Why do sun tunnels need to be cleaned?

Normally, VELUX sun tunnels require little cleaning. However, this depends on how good the installation of your sun tunnel was.

Poor installation of a sun tunnel not only jeopardizes how well the tunnel can deliver light, but also causes more dirt to accumulate. So if the sun tunnel installation is bad, e.g. a loose or even unsealed pipe end, then regular maintenance or reinstallation is required.

The usual suspects for an unclean sun tunnel (if poorly installed) are flies, cobwebs and dust.

How to clean a VELUX sun tunnel

First and foremost, make sure you are equipped with the necessary cleaning tools and equipment.

Note: If the sun tunnel is too high to reach, contact a professional cleaner to safely complete the task.

what will you need

Note: If you are unsure, check the manufacturer’s instructions for removing and reinstalling after cleaning the components.

Step One: Remove the diffuser (see our removal guide here).

Step Two: Clean the sun tunnel glass appropriately with your cleaning soap and water. This loosens deposits and dirt.

Step Three: Wash the outer glass panel, flashings, pipe and ceiling ring separately. Repeat as necessary until all parts are clean.

Step Four: When the components are clean, rinse them separately with clean water and dry them with a microfiber cloth.

Note: If possible, you can let the components air dry.

Step Five: Clean the glass with the glass cleaner for the final shine.

Step 6: Reinstall the component(s) as needed.

There you have it! A freshly cleaned, shinier VELUX sun tunnel.

How to remove a VELUX sun tunnel diffuser

There are two ways to remove a diffuser from a VELUX sun tunnel. The method used depends on when the sun tunnel was installed. If your VELUX sun tunnel was installed after mid-2015, you can continue with step four. For those installed before mid-2015, here are the steps as follows.

Step One: Twist the ceiling ring clockwise or counterclockwise to gently remove it from the frame.

Step Two: After the ring has been removed, you should now be able to see the “Nameplate” piece. The following characters may be found on this plate, followed by 010 or 014, which determine how the disc is removed. :

Step Three: If the following part of the code is 2010 or 2010E (which means the install was before 2012), the window is held in place by four white tabs. These turn away from the disc.

Note: If there is a rubber grommet around the glass, you may need to tap the glass a few times to loosen the rubber grommet’s grip around it.

Alternatively, if the last part of the code is 2010E1 (i.e. installed between late 2011 and mid 2015) the disc should have four tabs secured with gray clips. You must loosen these clips and then turn the disc counter-clockwise to detach the disc from the frame.

Step Four: If your sun tunnel has any of the following codes and 0K10 or 0K14 2010 there should not be a ceiling ring as newer designs of Velux sun tunnels allow for easy removal as the component is rotated counter clockwise.

After the diffuser has been cleaned, reinstall it by reversing the steps to ensure a smooth and easy installation.

Window Cleaning Resource | Community

Has anyone heard of the Velux sun tunnel? It’s a bit like a skylight. I got a new customer today and he has a full error. Do you know how to clean it?

This is the best picture I could get. I know it looks like the moon.

Servicing and Maintaining Your VELUX Skylights

In areas with persistent cold spells with heavy snowfall, significant amounts of snow and ice can accumulate on the roof and a VELUX roof window could be covered with snow and ice for a long time.

When the temperature rises, the window is often one of the first places where snow and ice start to melt.

It is important to ensure that the water can always drain off the roof and the surrounding gutters.
