When it comes to eyelash extensions, the most important thing for our clients is to know how to clean their eyelashes so that the eyelashes last longer and the hair structure, follicles and surrounding skin are protected and healthy at all times.

If a client is not properly educated on how to clean their lashes after applying eyelash extensions, their thought process is usually to avoid them and not put anything on top of them that could cause their lashes to fall out.

What our dear customers don’t know is that if they don’t clean our eyelashes properly, makeup, dirt and grime will accumulate in the eyelashes, which actually causes the eyelash extensions to fall out sooner. It also means that when they have their lashes refilled, it becomes more difficult for the new extensions to adhere to the natural lashes.

To make matters worse, when our clients don’t clean their lashes properly, they make themselves more susceptible to allergic reactions and eye conditions like conjunctivitis, blepharitis, and even demodex. Eww.

In recent years, baby shampoo has been the cleanser of choice for many of our eyelash clients, largely because eyelash stylists have advised them to use it.

On the surface it has many great qualities of a good eyelash cleanser. It’s a gentle formula that doesn’t sting your eyes, removes excess dirt and grime, and is inexpensive.

However, as more research has been done in this area, it has come to light that while baby shampoo is gentle, it is not intended to get in, on or near the eyes. Since baby shampoo is not specifically formulated to cleanse the eye area, overuse will damage our delicate skin around the eyes and strip it of the natural oils needed for healthy skin, hair and follicles.

As you may know, when we strip excess oil from our skin, our skin goes mad and produces even more oil to compensate for the natural oil we keep stripping our skin of.

When your clients use baby shampoo to clean their lashes, so does the skin around their eyes and especially along their lash line. If your client’s lash line is consistently producing too many natural oils, they are more likely to suffer from blepharitis, clogged follicles, and excessive sticking of the extensions. And let’s face it, applying eyelash extensions is never fun in these conditions!

It’s also good to note that baby shampoo can contain things like fragrances, artificial colors, and mineral oils that over time and prolonged use will degrade the integrity of the adhesive and cause lashes to last shorter.

In short, using baby shampoo as an eyelash cleanser is not recommended. AT ALL.

Clean eyelash extensions last longer – eyelashes need to be cleaned as part of your at-home grooming routine!

Some customers think that keeping their eyelash extensions away from water will make them last longer, but this is very wrong and has exactly the opposite effect! Your eyelash extensions will fall off prematurely if you avoid cleaning them. Yes, always avoid water for the first 24 hours, or as directed by your lash technician – but that doesn’t mean you won’t keep them wet forever!

It is important that you clean your eyelash extensions. Improper cleaning, or avoiding cleaning altogether, creates problems that result in your lashes not lasting as long as they should. Not cleaning regularly or properly also leads to possible infection, irritation, poor eyelash health/growth and eyelash mites (yes, they really exist!).

You CANNOT brush through your extensions. When eyelash extensions are properly applied to one natural lash at a time, you should be able to seamlessly glide through your eyelash extensions with a mascara wand.

The application will burn your eyes during and after the process. An experienced eyelash artist will ensure that your eyes are completely closed throughout the process. If your eyes are constantly burning during and after the procedure, your eyelash artist did not take the necessary safety precautions to prevent chemical fumes from coming into contact with your eyes. Applying eyelash extensions is a relaxing, painless process.

Your eyelash extensions sting and irritate your eyes. When your eyelash extensions grow out, they shouldn’t be irritating AT ALL. If you are uncomfortable, it means that more than one lash is attached to each other or stuck to your skin. Each lash is at a different growth stage during the lash cycle. When they stick together, it leads to premature hair loss as our eyelashes are at different stages during the eyelash shedding cycle. (e.g. mature eyelashes attached to a baby eyelash) Eyelash extensions should NEVER be applied to the skin. The adhesive is not intended to be in contact with the skin and will clog pores, possibly leading to blepharitis/hair loss/infection/allergy etc.

Your complete set is ready within 1 hour. It is an industry standard that a true full application time is 1.5-2 hours. Less time means a job was done quickly. A quick job can either mean they didn’t add an extension to each lash, or that a lot of lashes were stacked on top of your lashes, causing them to stick and stick together.

Your eyelash extensions appear heavy/false/thick/not curly. The eyelash artist is using extensions that are too heavy/thick and not curly enough. Eyelash extensions are customized. They come in different lengths, curls and thicknesses. An experienced lash technician with an eye for design will guide you through the process and create a set that flatters your eye shape. When a proper eyelash extension is in place, you shouldn’t be able to feel anything.

Aftercare for eyelash extensions

Eyelash extensions are a high-maintenance beauty treatment. They require very gentle care in order for the lashes to last longer and stay in good condition.

Keep your eyelash extensions dry for 4-6 hours after your appointment.

You can wash your face in the sink with a washcloth, avoiding the eye area.

Keep all oil-based products away from your eyes and remember that anything on your face gets into the eye area.

Oil WILL break down the glue and you will have premature loss of eyelash extensions.

Your hands can get dirty and dirt is oily, so you should keep your fingers off your eyes unless you’re cleaning them.

Eyelash tinting must be done 24-48 hours prior to your eyelash refill appointment.

No perm for the eyelashes!

No saunas, facials or swimming within 4-6 hours of application.

Don’t stick your head in the oven while baking! It can singe your extensions! Turn your head away from the oven when putting something in or pulling something out.

Do not use an eyelash curler.

You should be careful and pay special attention to makeup and remover.

Do not use cotton for your eyelash extensions.

Wash your lashes daily (after the first 4-6 hours). Apply the oil-free makeup remover with your fingers and gently rub over the lashes.

Or you can apply oil-free makeup remover to your lashes with a disposable wand of mascara. Spray onto wand, brush gently through lashes and rinse with warm water.

Mascara should be washable and not waterproof.

1) We do not attach aircraft parts! Aggressive behavior towards the eyelashes will cause the eyelash extensions to come off.

2) Keep them dry for 4-6 hours after applying. If you’re wearing eyeshadow and liner, you’ll need to leave them on or reapply them.

3) Keep oil off your lashes, including oil off your fingers.

4) If you wash them, you will wear them longer. Be sure to cleanse daily to remove oils.

5) Brushing solves most problems. Try brushing the lashes gently if you notice something is wrong.

The main ingredient in eyelash extension glue is cyanoacrylate (CA). Features of cyanoacrylate adhesive that make it favorable for use in this industry include a strong bond, a fast set time and the fact that it requires little to no solvent. Although cyanoacrylate has many advantages, today let’s talk about something unfavorable that can sometimes occur!

WHY does eyelash extension glue turn white?

Did you know? Cyanoacrylate adhesive does not “dry” due to solvent evaporation like many other adhesives. Rather, the adhesive polymerizes when it comes into contact with atmospheric moisture. To put it simply, a chemical reaction takes place in which cyanoacrylate molecules bond and harden.

Eyelash glue will turn white if suddenly exposed to very high humidity or direct exposure to moisture. This causes the adhesive to harden in a burst instead of hardening at a normal rate. When this happens, the appearance of the adhesive will turn white. The technical term for this is shock polymerization. If the glue for eyelash extensions turns white due to shock polymerization, the connection will not only look uncomfortable, but the strength of the connection will also be affected. Because if the curing is too fast, the adhesive layer “shrinks, which leads to a lower adhesive strength”. The bond becomes brittle, weak and looks frosty white.

Common causes and ways to solve the problem.

Some of the most common reasons eyelash extensions adhesive turns white include watery eyes, cleaning the lashes before the adhesive is fully cured, nano-fogging the lashes too close, and improperly removing the lash extensions.

If you notice your customer’s eyes watering, address the matter quickly. This is one of the most common reasons eyelash glue turns white on the outer corners of the eye. The tears can come in contact with the glue on the lashes and cause shock polymerization.

Problem Solving ➡️First determine the reason why your customer’s eyes are watering. Is it because their eyes are open and the glue fumes are irritating their eyes? Could it be that the gel pad is shifting into her eyes and causing irritation? Is it because her eyes water easily? Are your lights too bright for your customer? Are you making your customer uncomfortable? Once you find the cause of watery eyes, remove the culprit.

Pro tip💡 A little trick is to cut our lint-free cleaning wipes to size and attach them to the outer corners of your client’s eyes. This is a life changing hack for your naturally teary clients. The wipes catch and absorb the tears. It is VERY important to use lint free cloths instead of tissues or cotton as lint can react with the cyanoacrylate causing a very hot chemical reaction.

Nanomist too close to eyes.

Nano-fogging the eyelash extensions at the end of the appointment increases the humidity level nearby. Eyelash artists do this to speed up the curing speed of the glue in low humidity situations. However, the Nanomister should not be held too close to the eyelashes. The eyelash extension glue will turn white with moisture overload and interfere with the proper curing of the cyanoacrylate. Very dense fogging causes too much moisture and can lead to shock polymerization.

Troubleshooting ➡️When nanomisting, hold the Nanomist approximately 30 cm (1 foot) from the client’s newly applied lashes. This will prevent the eyelash extension glue from turning white.

Improper eyelash removal.

Do you notice that the eyelash glue turns white after eyelash removal? This is a sign that you haven’t thoroughly removed all of the glue residue with your eyelash remover. The eyelash removal product works by dissolving the glue. If the glue left on the eyelashes is exposed to too much moisture again (e.g. by removing the remover), the eyelash extension glue will turn white.

Troubleshooting ➡️It takes a while for the eyelash remover to dissolve the glue. If you don’t leave the remover on long enough, it can be difficult to wipe off all the extensions and glue.

Make sure you follow the instructions on how to properly remove eyelashes. For example, our undo remover takes 3-5 minutes to properly dissolve the glue bond. If adhesive residue remains, reapply the remover to the bond and wait another 3-5 minutes. The adhesive residue then slides easily off the natural lashes. Always make sure that all adhesive residue is completely removed before cleaning the lashes after an eyelash removal.

Cleaning the lashes too early after application.

Many lash artists now prefer to clean the client’s lashes at the end of the appointment. This is to flush away any extension adhesive fumes that may have landed on the client’s skin. However, cleaning immediately after applying the last extensions might be too soon! Depending on the curing time of your eyelash glue, the amount of glue used and the humidity in your lash room, it may take some time for all the glue to harden. If you clean before the glue cures, the eyelash extension glue will turn white due to shock curing.

Troubleshooting ➡️Wait 5-10 minutes after applying the last extender before cleaning. So that you don’t expose the glue to too much moisture before the glue hardens, otherwise you may see the eyelash extension glue turn white. While waiting, take the time to check for “stickies,” remove the gel eye pads and tape, and fan the adhesive fumes out of your customer’s eyes.

The eyelash extension glue turned white. How do I remove it?

When eyelash extension glue turns white, the best way to deal with it is to remove it completely. First, the white residue is very unsightly as it contrasts with the black lashes. It’s very obvious if not removed. Second, because of the shock polymerization, the bond is very weak. The extension will likely fall off early after a few days of wear. Hence, removing it completely and replacing it with a new extension is the best method to deal with this situation.

Unfortunately, although the banana peel eyelash removal method is easy and quick, it is not the best option when the eyelash extension glue turns white. This eyelash removal method does not usually remove all of the white residue. To completely remove all white residue, Alash Remover should be used. Isolate the lash extensions where the lash glue has turned white and spot-treat the lash with Undo.

Micellar water is a multi-purpose cleaning liquid popularly known as soft water.

Micellar water contains two main ingredients:

Water: Purified water

Mild Surfactants: Compounds used for cleaning

When these small surfactant molecules are mixed, they remain suspended and form microscopic spheres called micelles.[1]

Fun Fact: Micelles act like magnets, attracting dirt and oil. Even the most stubborn makeup products melt easily and slide off when you apply micellar water. The level of ingredients in micellar water makes it an excellent cleanser no matter what makeup you use.

So can you use micellar water to clean eyelash extensions?

Yes, micellar water is safe for cleaning eyelash extensions and will not damage them. While micellar water can weaken lash glue when loaded with oil, a water-based product is perfectly safe.

Micellar water is used by most makeup wearers today, except for those who wear eyelash extensions or microblading, thanks to Bioderma, which invented the very first micellar water in 1991.[2]

However, the surfactants contained in the micellar water cannot remain on the skin after use. Because of this, people with sensitive skin must avoid micellar water as it leads to pimples, dry skin, etc

How to clean eyelash extensions with micellar water

Once you’ve chosen the right micellar water, all you have to do is use it. The right makeup remover will not damage your extensions or cause them to fall out.

If you use eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow or any type of eye makeup, the step-by-step guide below will show you how to use micellar water to safely remove them while preserving your eyelash extensions.

The first thing you need to do is remove the face makeup around the eyes with the micellar water without touching the false eyelashes directly before working on your false eyelashes.

Next, get a good brush so you can gently apply the micellar water to your eyelash extensions. Opt for a fluffy and soft makeup brush that doesn’t pill.

Now put a few drops of micellar water on the make-up brush and gently dab them on different parts of your eyelashes.

Gently sweep the micellar water over the lashes and into the lash extensions from below.

Be careful not to scrub or rub too hard when cleaning your lashes as this can weaken the lash glue and cause your lash extensions to fall out prematurely. Also avoid pulling and hanging movements.

Remember to use pure water to remove makeup when wearing eyelash extensions? This is a bad choice because you’re rubbing your skin a lot in the process.

If you don’t want to go through the hassle of making your own lash cleanser, you can just ask your lash technician. Most reputable salons that I know provide their clients with an eyelash extension cleanser and offer them to buy some at a very reasonable price.

When wearing eyelash extensions, you need an oil-free makeup remover to remove eye makeup like eyeliner, mascara, eyeshadow, etc.

Regular cleaning also helps to prevent premature eyelash loss. Clean your lashes daily with a gentle, lash extension-friendly cleanser and make sure it’s oil and alcohol free!

THE COMFORTING TRUTH: Skipping your daily lash wash can clog your lash follicles with oil, dirt, and debris, which can make it harder for new lashes to grow.

Still, it’s not uncommon for eyelash stylists to see guests with heavy build-ups of makeup residue, oil and/or dead skin cells lining their lashes. Not only is this unsanitary, but it can also cut down on your appointment time, as your stylist needs to make sure they’re sparkling clean before doing your refill.

#2: Brush your lashes daily

The #1 question every eyelash artist hears every day is: how long do eyelash extensions last?

The usual answer is: It depends.

The lifespan of each type of extension is around six to eight weeks. However, the actual length of stay depends on the growth rate and lifespan of your natural lashes.

Because each eyelash extension is attached to a separate natural lash, it will fall off as the natural lash falls. Natural eyelashes can last from just two weeks to eight weeks.

Eyelash growth cycle

Since the lifespan of eyelashes differs from hair to hair and their growth rate also varies, eyelash extensions naturally also fall out at very different times and not all at once.

Therefore, the solution to this situation is regular fillings offered by eyelash salons.

The lifespan of your lashes also depends on how well you take care of them – both natural lashes and eyelash extensions. Luckily, there are many methods that can help you keep your natural lashes healthy and strong and keep eyelash extensions firmly in place.

How many eyelash extensions fall out per day?

All of these phases last a total of 60 to 90 days, which is much quicker than the other hairs on our head – the hair, eyebrows, mustache and beard – they then have.

Before a single eyelash hair falls out, the new hair is already in the growth phase and replaces the last one. This process is never-ending and only slowly fades as the person ages or as bad habits damage the eyelashes.

Loss of natural eyelashes

Like hair loss, eyelash loss is seasonal. Usually, we lose the most hair in spring and fall, so this time is known as the “fall lash season”.

There are several causes of seasonal hair loss. The two main ones are both linked to hormones.

1) Sunlight. Although you spend most of your time indoors, spring and summer are when you get the most sunlight. It causes your body to produce melatonin, which affects hormone levels in your scalp.

2) Testosterone levels are affected in spring and fall. Although testosterone is generally considered a male hormone, it is found in both men and women and is known to cause hair loss.

So don’t worry too much if you lose more lashes than usual in spring or fall. The normal growth cycle will soon be restored.

Eyelash extensions falling out

However, eyelash extensions can fall out the most in summer and winter. In summer it is caused by perspiration, the amount of which increases with the warm weather and its moisture softens the eyelash glue.

However, the winter cold and dry air make the eyelash extensions brittle and the eyelash glue can crumble.

In any case, avoid strong environmental changes, excessive moisture in the eye area and extreme temperatures.

How do eyelash extensions last longer?

Although you cannot change the rate at which natural lashes fall out, you can do your best to keep your eyelash extensions attached to the existing lashes for as long as possible.

Avoid contact with water for the first 48 hours after applying the lashes. Water and moisture in general will significantly reduce the effectiveness of eyelash glue and soften its consistency. Avoid sauna, swimming, wash your face with hot water. Avoid oil-based cosmetics near the eyes and oil-based makeup removers. Do not use an eyelash curler or other curling methods. Your eyelash extensions and the glue that holds them in place are too delicate for that. Brush your eyelashes with a clean eyelash brush every morning to keep them beautiful and groomed. In addition to washing eyelash extensions to prevent eye infections and other ailments, a proper cleaning routine requires removing the oil that has built up on the lashes.

If you have oily skin or have worn makeup that contains oil, some of it will always build up on your lashes.

However, if you don’t clean your eyelashes regularly, this fat stays there and gradually breaks down the eyelash glue. Oil is a dangerous enemy for any eyelash glue. By washing your eyelashes, you extend the life of the extensions.

4 steps to the right eyelash bath with an eyelash cleaner

Remove eye makeup with an oil-free makeup remover. Wet your face or eyelashes with lukewarm water. Apply a small amount of BL Foam Cleanser to the back of your hand. 1. Brushing your eyelash extensions causes discomfort

If this happens, it’s a sure sign that too much glue has been used and your lashes may be stuck together. This can damage and break the eyelashes. You should be able to easily brush your lashes daily without discomfort. Too much glue means poor insulation of your lashes during application.

Solution: I suggest finding another eyelash technician!

2. Your eyelash extensions sting, twist and irritate your eyes

This happens when an eyelash extension has not been properly attached to your natural lash or the extensions are too long causing the extension to twist, twist, droop and twist. This means that your extensions will fit well in every way and will catch your eye at the same time. No fun! Eyelashes should always be comfortable to wear.

Solution: I suggest asking for a shorter length next time or finding another eyelash technician.

3. Your inner lash extensions are too long and look unnatural

This is because the lash technician uses extensions that are too long for such a short section of natural lashes. Using lashes that are too long on the inner corner creates a very fake look that is not what you want. Eyelashes should always look believable, natural and beautiful.

Solution: Next time, ask for shorter lashes in the inner eye area. If your lash technician doesn’t want to do this for you, then find another.

4. Your extensions are all one length from the inner to the outer eye

This happens when the lash technician hasn’t thought about the shape of your eyes or what will suit you best when applying your lashes. Use a mixture of 2-3 or more lash lengths to avoid making your lashes look like you’ve applied a cheap fake lash strip. Your eyelashes should always match your eye shape.

Solution: Personally, I would look for another eyelash stylist – a lack of attention to detail when styling my eyelashes would be a deal breaker for me!

5. The application process burns your eyes long after it’s over!

Many new customers have told me that they have had bad experiences with adhesive fumes that burn their eyes severely during and after application. One client told me she got into her car after her lashes were applied and had to sit while she blew on the air conditioner to stop the stinging. That’s not normal! Slight tearing of the eyes may occur, but constant discomfort afterwards is uncommon – the process should be relaxing, comfortable, and enjoyable.

Solution: Always let your eyelash extension technician know if anything bothers you during the application. It may be that your eyes are not closed properly, the eye pad is rubbing against your eyes, or the adhesive is not of good quality.

6. Your eyelash extensions only last a week!

This often happens when not enough eyelash extensions have been applied. If you think you’ve found the cheapest technician, then chances are they won’t spend enough time during the appointment to create a long-lasting, full lash effect. A good lash application should last 1.5-2+ hours. A full set of lashes should mean applying them to all of your natural lashes (those that are long enough).

An application of less than 1.5 hours and you are likely to get a quick treatment that will show wear and tear within a week. After 2 weeks all your lashes will be gone. Remember that you will naturally lose 2-5 lashes a day, so do the math.

Keep in mind that if your natural lashes are very sparse, delicate, and fragile, your extensions may not last as long as other people’s. Unfortunately, lashes can only accentuate what you naturally have.

Eyelash extensions can last more than 3 weeks with proper care and great application. Refills are recommended every 2-4 weeks to keep your lashes looking full. The time between fills always depends on your lash care routine, your natural lash cycle and the number of lashes you have to work with.

NOTE: Following the at-home care instructions is key to the durability of your lashes. Always follow this advice.

Solution: Book a longer appointment/refill or select a new technician who will give the time spent on their appointments.

7. Your lashes aren’t extensions, they’re lash extensions or cluster lashes

This is the worst kind of “eyelash extensions”. Clusters or flares should never be applied with permanent eyelash glue. Eyelash breakage and infection are common when eyelash flares are applied, not to mention the appearance is not desirable since your lashes will look more like spiders than the pretty, luscious lashes you are supposed to have.

Eyelash extensions make it easy to wake up with full, long lashes every day. Although extensions save you from having to apply mascara to achieve similar lash-flattering results, they do require a bit of maintenance to maintain their floppy appearance.

Many of my clients worry that cleaning will cause the eyelash extensions to fall out. But the opposite is true.

Neglecting your eye hygiene can damage your extensions and lead to poor retention. One thing you must do to keep your eyelash extensions in top condition is to keep them clean.

I’m sharing a 4-step guide to cleaning eyelash extensions at home so you can take care of your pair with confidence.

How to Clean Eyelash Extensions at Home (Step by Step)

Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to maintain the quality of your eyelash extensions from the moment you apply them to your next session with your eyelash technician.

Step #1: Choose the right tools and cleaning supplies

An eyelash brush, an eyelash cleaner, and a spoolie brush are three essential items for cleaning eyelash extensions at home.

Your fingers and the usual cleaner are not enough. Using just your fingers makes it difficult to remove all of the oil, dirt, dead skin, and eye makeup that has built up on your natural lashes, and your usual cleanser could loosen extension fibers.

Here’s what to look for in an eyelash brush, cleanser, and spoolie brush:

What to look for in an eyelash brush

Your eyelash brush should have lint-free, super-soft bristles to gently brush away oil and dirt without catching on your extensions.

Please stay away from cotton pads or balls as they can stick to your extensions and pull them out.

What you should look out for in a cleaner

Check the labels to find a cleanser specifically formulated for cleaning hair extensions and removing eye makeup. Other options include oil-free makeup remover, gentle cleansers, eyelash shampoo, micellar water, or distilled water.

Do not use cleaning products that contain glycerine or oil. These ingredients can weaken the glue in your extensions and increase the risk of strands of lashes falling out prematurely.

What to look for in a spoolie brush

The third must-have for your extensions grooming kit is a spoolie brush — this is essentially a clean wand of mascara.

No need to scrub your current mascara wand. You can buy squeaky clean spoolie brushes. You can even find two-in-one spoolie brushes with softer bristles on one end and harder bristles on the other.

Step #2: Clean and rinse your eyelash extensions

Remove all makeup from the non-lash parts of your face (like foundation, lipstick, and blush) before you begin cleaning your extensions.

Ready? Right, this is what you need to do next:

You’ll be focusing on one eye at a time, so decide which eye to start with and splash cool water on its extensions.

Put a little cleanser on the tip of your lash brush, close your eyes tightly (or keep one eye open if you can blink), and gently work the cleanser down the length of your lashes. Move the brush in tiny circles from the inner to outer corners of your lash line without applying pressure.

Rinse the cleanser from your eye area and lash brush.

Repeat the process with your other eye.

Step #3: Dry your eyelash extensions

Drying extensions properly is an art.

First, gently pat your extensions with a towel made of a fabric that won’t snag or leave fibers on your lashes. Microfiber towels work well.

Your tap should absorb most of the water. You can then let your extensions air dry.

However, letting your extensions dry on their own can result in a slightly spiky effect. Another option is to dry them with a mini fan. You can buy nifty handheld fans specially designed for drying eyelash extensions.

Allow your extensions to dry completely before proceeding to the next step (brushing) as wet lashes are weaker and more likely to break.

Step #4: Brush your eyelash extensions

Brushing is the final step in your extensions care routine. You will need your spoolie brush (or a clean mascara brush) for this step.

Gently brush your lashes from just above the lash line down to the tips of the extensions. Use an up and down motion.

Then fan out the extensions. You should avoid brushing too close to your lash line to avoid accidentally breaking the bond between the extensions and your skin.

Brushing your extensions has several benefits. They separate the lashes, do them all the same way (to prevent fibers from poking your eyes) and remove any leftover stains of dust, dirt and makeup.

You should clean eyelash extensions daily. It is best to include it in your makeup routine. Good eyelash hygiene is key to keeping eyelash extensions long.

How long after the appointment can you clean your eyelash extensions?

Getting into the routine of regularly cleaning your eyelash extensions is a must for maintaining the extensions. However, you must wait 24 hours after applying eyelash extensions before cleaning them. If your stylist has set them during the appointment, you only have to wait 4 hours before wetting your eyelash extensions. By curing the eyelashes, the bond of the eyelash extensions is strengthened.

Keep water away from your extensions for the first 4 hours after application; that means no showers, no swimming and no saunas. Getting your newly attached lashes wet can prevent them from adhering properly to your skin, making them more likely to fall out too soon.

Clean your extensions regularly after 48 hours. Clean every day if you’re active, have oily skin, or wear eye makeup.

Brush your extensions daily, plus clean them a few times a week.

Why is it important to clean your eyelash extensions at home?

Oil, dirt, dust, skin cells, dead skin, and makeup particles (if you wear makeup) all end up on your lashes all day long. It’s a natural process that occurs whether you wear eyelash extensions or not.

If you don’t wash away these impurities, they will accumulate at the base of your lashes. Over time, this can lead to eye sensitivity and infection, clogging your eyelash follicles and creating an environment that attracts harmful eyelash mites that can cause your natural eyelashes to fall out.

Signs that you might have an eye infection include red, swollen, itchy eyelids. If you notice these symptoms, see an ophthalmologist.

Keeping your extensions clean will help them last longer. Proper care of your extensions can double their lifespan.

Can you wear mascara with eyelash extensions?

I suggest that you do not wear mascara with extensions as some formulations (especially waterproof mascara) can weaken the adhesive of your extensions.

Another reason to skip mascara is so you don’t have to wipe your lashes with mascara-removing products that could damage your extensions. Plus, you shouldn’t have to add anything to your luscious lash extensions!

If you must, you can wear mascara with classic eyelash extensions, but avoid using them on voluminous lashes.

Can I use Cetaphil to clean eyelash extensions?

Yes you can. Cetaphil is a common oil-free makeup remover that can be used to clean eyelash extensions. Baby shampoos are a common alternative.

Can I wash my eyelash extensions after 24 hours?

Yes, waiting 24 hours after your appointment is the general norm. However, most eyelash stylists now use a method to cure your eyelash extensions during the appointment. If that’s the case, you can start washing your lashes much earlier, as early as 4 hours.

You can clean eyelash extensions in the shower. Avoid strong water pressure aimed directly at your natural lashes. The best way to do this is to stand with your back to the water and gently drizzle the water over your face.

After showering, gently pat the water off your lashes or simply let the lashes air dry.

Baby shampoo is a great oil-free tool to have in your arsenal to clean your lashes regularly. It is particularly suitable for sensitive skin and protects the eyelash glue.

Put a drop of baby shampoo in a bowl and mix with an eye brush until you have a nice sudsy texture. Use your soft brush with the baby shampoo to gently comb through each lash extension. When you’re done, use your fingers to slowly rinse the baby shampoo off your lashes. Do not use cotton swabs or other lint products! Brush off your eyelash extensions with a spoolie brush. Finally, you can let them air dry or, if you have one, use an eyelash dryer to make things easier and quicker.

Once you’ve chosen the right micellar water, all you have to do is use it. The right makeup remover will not damage your extensions or cause them to fall out.

If you use eyeliner, mascara, eye shadow or any type of eye makeup, the step-by-step guide below will show you how to use micellar water to safely remove them while preserving your eyelash extensions.

The first thing you need to do is remove the face makeup around the eyes with the micellar water without touching the false eyelashes directly before working on your false eyelashes.

Next, get a good brush so you can gently apply the micellar water to your eyelash extensions. Opt for a fluffy and soft makeup brush that doesn’t pill.

Now put a few drops of micellar water on the make-up brush and gently dab them on different parts of your eyelashes.
