What is an armhole measurement?
Wrap the tape measure from the shoulder to the armpit.
Draw the tape measure down over the front of your shoulder and arm, pausing once it hits the center of your armpit. This measurement is sometimes referred to as your Armhole depth.
How to Measure a hem
How can you tell the armhole dimensions on a shirt?
Drew Hawkins1 Community Answer
There are a few things you can do to estimate the armhole measurement. First, spread the shirt out face-up on a flat, stable surface. Smooth out the fabric around the arm and shoulder area, doing your best to eliminate any wrinkles, folds, or bunches. Take a tape measure and position the starting end of the tape measure on top of the seam where it intersects with the seam starting at the neckline of the garment. Then adjust the loose end of the tape so that it lies along the curve of the seam up to the armpit area. Make sure the tape measure is on the torso of the shirt and not on the sleeve, which can affect the accuracy of your measurements. Once you’ve positioned the tape measure correctly, look at the number that lines up with the bottom of the seam and write it down on a piece of paper. Then turn the shirt inside out and measure the back armhole seam. Add the two measurements together to get your full armhole measurement.

What is a pit to pit measurement?
Armpit To Armpit
The most effective measurement is the pit to pit of a garment. This is taken by laying the garment flat, face up and measuring the cloth from its widest point from under the armpit to the other armpit.

A guide to sizes and measurements
Measuring yourself and understanding what size you need is crucial when shopping online. Measurements can vary greatly from brand to brand due to style, features and country of origin, even if the garments have the same size tags inside. If you need measurements, the most common request is chest size, which we measure in the following way
armpit to armpit
The most effective measurement is the center-to-center distance of a garment. To do this, lay the garment flat, face up, and measure the fabric from its widest point, from under the armpit to the opposite armpit. The best way to estimate the size you need is to measure a garment of similar description that fits you well (i.e. if you are buying a sweater you should measure one of your own that you like the fit of to determine which size you need when purchasing ). Never let your actual chest measurement fool you, for example if your chest measures 44 inches all the way around and you divide by two giving you a 22 inch hole which actually would be too small as you need at least 1 to 2 inches in one Garment to allow movement.

Is bust and pit to pit the same?
Measurements are taken on a single side of the garment, according to the measuring guide below, with the garment laying flat and not stretched. For example, if your actual bust measurement is 32 inch, take the size which has a stated pit-to-pit (PTP) or bust measurement of at least 16 inch (half of 32 inch).
How to Measure a hem
Using a soft tape measure, record your measurements around your bust, waist, and hips. Alternatively, measure your existing garment for comparison.
Step 2: Compare your measurements to product measurements
Product measurements are listed on each individual product page. Size may vary between different designs depending on cut and lightness allowance. Therefore, orientate yourself exactly to the measurements on the respective product page.
Measurements are taken on one side of the garment according to the measurement guide below, with the garment lying flat and not stretched. For example, if your actual chest measurement is 32 inches, take the size with a specified pit-to-pit (PTP) or chest measurement of at least 16 inches (half of 32 inches). If your measurements are between two sizes, we recommend taking the larger size.

Tips for measuring:
Take all measurements lying down. Lay the t-shirt on a flat surface. The front should face up. Hanging clothing may stretch when measured, and wearing it on a different size model may distort your measurement.
Use a flexible tape measure that is at least 36″ long. Do not attempt to take clothing measurements with a standard 12 inch ruler as you will end up with an inaccurate measurement. If you don’t have a tape measure handy and this is more of an emergency, you can always download a printable tape measure online.
Measure twice! If you don’t get the same measurement both times, try again.
Record the measurement to the nearest 1/4 inch. Anything more specific is irrelevant, but remember that lay-flat measurements are generally doubled (e.g., a 12.5-inch lay-flat waist can be taken as a 25-inch waist), so a 1/4 inch will make a difference could.
Take measurements when taking photos. Trying to measure your listing at your desk ends up taking a lot more time and energy going back and forth between tasks.
Not all manufacturers make their clothing to the same specifications. Always check the size chart before buying online.
What does length to hem mean?
The Shoulder to Hem measurement measures the total length of the garment from the shoulder down to the hem. This vertical measurement should be taken from the top of the shoulder (where the shoulder seam of a regular shirt would be) down to the hem of that particular design, which could be the knee, ankle, floor, etc.
How to Measure a hem
Having garments made to your own body measurements is a unique benefit of ordering from Hannah Caroline Couture. But we understand that not everyone works with their measurements every day like we do!
As our garments are made to order and we want you to be able to take accurate measurements to ensure a good fit, we have put together a quick guide on how to measure accurately.
A few things to note…
All measurements must be in inches. stand up straight Slouching can change more measurements than you might think. Keep the measuring tape snug, but not too loose or so tight that it pinches. We will add a little more lightness in areas where it is required for comfort and function. Please don’t take any space away from us – that’s our job! 🙂 Don’t alter your body for the measurements. That means don’t vacuum, stand on tiptoe, or make other modifications that could make the measurements less accurate. Try to wear the same bra and underwear (formers, tights, etc.) that you intend to wear with the garment you are ordering. It can be helpful to have a friend take measurements for you. Some measurements may be difficult to perform yourself. If you are not comfortable taking your own measurements, most local tailors will take them for you for free or for a very small fee. Just show them this guide to make sure they take the measurements from the same places on your body as my charts show! The dress length should be measured in the same shoe height that you intend to wear with the dress. For example, if you plan to wear 3 inch heels with the dress you ordered, you should also wear 3 inch heels when measuring the dress length. Keep in mind that dresses can almost always be hemmed shorter, but usually cannot be made longer. If you are worried about something being too short, please add some length accordingly. If you have any questions about measuring, we’re here to help! You can contact us via chat (bottom right) or email.
A perfectly fitting Hannah Caroline Couture garment starts with precise measurements. Here is an illustrated guide to taking it!
Usual measurements
Most of our garments require these common measurements. Here’s how to take them.
bust
The chest measurement should be taken at the fullest part of your chest – over the nipples in front and at or just below your shoulder blades in the back. The tape measure should be kept level all the way around.
waist
The waist measurement should be taken at the narrowest part of your waist, usually between your lowest rib and your belly button.
Hips
Hip circumference should be measured at the widest part of your hips and buttocks.
waist to hem
The waist to hem measurement is a vertical measurement that should be measured from where you took your waist measurement to the bottom of the hem. This can be your knee, floor or any other length depending on what dress length you choose for a particular design.
shoulder to waist
The shoulder-to-waist measurement is a vertical measurement that should be taken from the top of your shoulder (where the shoulder seam of a shirt is typically located) to where you measured your waist.
arm length
The arm length measurement measures the length of your desired sleeve based on what sleeve length you choose for a specific design. It should be taken from the top of the shoulder (where a shoulder seam usually starts on a shirt) to your chosen length (e.g. the wrist for a long sleeve).
arm width
The arm width measurement should be taken at the widest part of your upper arm to ensure the sleeve is not too tight or too loose.
other measurements
Some of our garments also require these measurements. Here’s how to take them.
neck
The neck measurement should be taken around the neck near the base to ensure it is not too tight.
under failure
The under bust measurement should be taken exactly where you took the bust measurement. It should be around the chest and is a measurement commonly used to determine bra size.
waist to hip
The waist to hips measurement is a vertical measurement that should be taken along the side of your body from where you measured your waist to where you took your hips measurement.
wrist
The wrist measurement should be measured around your wrist, just above where your arm connects to your hand.
inseam
The inseam is most commonly used to determine the leg length of pants/jumpsuits. This measurement should be taken from the top of the crotch (where the seams of a pant leg all intersect) to the length of the pant. This length can depend on which option you choose for a particular garment, so it could be your knee, ankle, bottom or shorter.
rise
The Rise measurement tells us if something is high, medium, low, etc. This measurement is taken by measuring from the top where you want the pants, through the crotch and back up to the back of the pants top. It may be helpful to wear pants that fit where you want the HCC garment to sit while taking this measurement. This measurement can also be broken down into two measurements: front rise and back rise. Front Rise is easy from the intersection of the seams in the crotch to where you want the garment to sit in the front; Back height is simply from the intersection of the seams in the crotch to where you want the garment to sit in the back.
shoulder to hem
The shoulder to hem measurement measures the total length of the garment from the shoulder to the hem. This vertical measurement should be taken from the top of the shoulder (where the shoulder seam of a regular shirt would be) to the hem of that particular design, which could be the knee, ankle, bottom, etc.
We hope this guide has been helpful! Feel free to start a chat with us or email us if you would like additional assistance.
What is the hem of a shirt?
The shirt hem, often defined by its shape, is the bottom end of the shirt, which is folded and hemmed to create a finished edge on the garment.
How to Measure a hem
Rounded hem
The rounded hem is the most common choice for business and business casual shirts. It has a 2 inch rise on each side of the shirt that curves towards the side seams, giving the front and back shirt ends a rounded shape. Our shirts are reinforced at the highest rise with side seam gussets, a design detail that both reinforces the shirt at this stress point and signifies quality construction.
Straight hem
The straight hem is a popular choice for casual and extra open shirts. It is, as the name suggests, cut straight at the bottom of the shirt and features a 2.5 inch slit at the bottom of the side seam on each side of the shirt.
Sizing Tips: We recommend making two small adjustments to your shirt size when applying a straight hem to your shirt design. First, make sure the width of the middle part is the same or very close to the bottom width, as this will help create an optimal relaxed look without the “hourglass” shape typical of more formal shirts. Secondly, you might also consider reducing the shirt length by about 0.7 inches so that the shirt doesn’t feel too long when you wear it open.
polo hem
The polo hem is traditionally a design feature of classic polo shirts. It is cut straight around the bottom edge of the shirt, but the back shirttail is 1 inch longer than the front shirttail. It includes side seam slits on each side of the shirt, similar to the straight hem, but given the difference in front and back shirttail length, these slits are 1 inch long.

How do you take your measurements?
It’s simpler than you think!
Getting Started: Place the band over your underwear, keep the band comfortably loose, NOT too loose! Also make sure the tape is level front to back. If you are between sizes, always choose the next size up (if you want to order a standard size).
1. Bust: Place the tape measure around the fullest part of your bust. Follow the back of your bra strap to keep the band level. (Keep your arms relaxed!). Please note that bust size is not your bra size.
2. Waist: Measure around the narrowest part of your natural waistline.
3. Hips: Stand with your feet together and then measure around the fullest part of your hips. If you have larger thighs than hips, simply measure your thighs the same way you measure your hips and then let us know. Please allow about 1-2 inches of extra space to sit.
Length: We divide your length measurements into 2 to know where your waist is.
4. Shoulder-Waist: Measure the length from the center of your shoulder, past your nipple, to your waist (about 1 inch above your belly button).
5. Waist Hem: Measure from your waist (the same spot you stopped at last time) to the hem. The band should be kept taut as it follows the body shape. Remember to take the measurements with the shoes you will be wearing or with heels of a similar size if you are opting for a full length dress.
6. Armpit Hem (Optional): Place your band under your armpit where the bra line will be (approximately 1.5 inches below your armpits), keep your arm relaxed, follow the SIDE of your body shape and go to the Hem. Don’t forget to include the shoes. This is optional but makes length measurements more accurate.
7. Shoulder width (optional): Measure the distance between the shoulder seams of your blouse from the back. We don’t usually need these measurements for strapless dresses.
Size Guides — Bosie
To get your true fit, lay a well-fitting garment you currently own flat on a flat surface. Measure across the front from armpit to armpit only, then measure vertically down the exact center from neck to hem to find your best match.
If you want a looser, looser fit, we recommend going one size up from the true fit outlined above.
Due to the natural malleability of wool, please allow a tolerance of 2-3 cm.
