“It’s too much to understand how quickly that’s changed,” says Lenehan. Two years later, they released their first Japanese album entitled Hopeful, produced by Avex. After releasing a second Japanese album in 2017, Bars & Melody return to Tokyo this December. Ahead of their tour, Charlie, now 20, and Leondre, 18, spoke to TW about their admiration for Japan and the hurricane of the past four years.
Leondre, you have campaigned against bullying throughout your career. What experiences have you had with bullying and how were you able to overcome the psychological scars?
Leondre: When I went from elementary school to middle school, I had a hard time because I liked different things. I didn’t listen to “cool music”. I liked a lot of rock and rap music and people didn’t really like that; it was too different. I like skateboarding and that’s why I was rejected. I used to write down how I was feeling, my thoughts, as an outlet for all these built up emotions. It was difficult to get through, but when I got up enough courage I told my mother, who helped me a lot. But I don’t think I could have done it without music.
Speaking of music… Charlie, what inspired you to start singing so early?
Charlie: I discovered early on that I have an ear for music when I picked up a djembe at the age of 7. I had rhythm automatically, so my teachers pushed me to learn guitar. Then I finally found that I could sing and built my voice naturally.
What reaction did you get from friends and family when you first expressed your desire to get into music and appear on Britain’s Got Talent?
Charlie: My mom actually laughed at me when I first told her I could sing, but when she saw me at a school talent show, she cried and believed in me 100 percent. After that, she basically gave up her life so I could continue my music career.
Did you have an interest in Japan before making your album with Avex?
Leondre: I’ve always been interested in Japanese cartoons and reading manga. That was part of my childhood. Not many people where I come from share this interest, so I was bullied. For me it is a dream come true to go to Japan and indulge in the culture.
Charlie: Like the song “Big In Japan” by Alphaville, it’s a big deal and a big market, so of course I was interested. It was a milestone in our career to finally announce our tour dates.
How was your reception in Japan?
Leondre: The reaction was overwhelming. Our show in Osaka is completely sold out. We have announced an additional date in Nagoya and the same in Tokyo. We can’t wait to put on a fantastic show. We owe it to our Japanese fans for waiting so long for us to return.
You’ve been to Tokyo a few times. What is your impression?
Leondre: I love Tokyo. It’s really a creative place. To see how many people live in such density but in such harmony is truly inspiring. Everyone seems friendly and like they can’t do enough for you.
Charlie: It was so crazy I can’t even remember both trips. It’s such a fast paced place with so much to see. I’m just as excited to go back as I was the first time, if not more so.
What are you doing here for fun?
Leondre: In Tokyo, I like to go to the arcade and check out the anime or manga stores. I love video games, especially video games inspired by or made in Japan. They have such a beauty about them that is unparalleled compared to other places in the world.
Your favorite experience in Tokyo?
Charlie: Definitely the grape flavored candies… They are amazing.
Leondre: The best experience in Tokyo for me was performing at A-Nation Festival alongside BIGBANG. It was crazy performing in front of so many people.
Did you notice a difference between Japanese fans and English fans?
Charlie: Everyone is extremely respectful… The English fans are also respectful, but the Japanese fans do everything they can to be as polite and nice as possible. I love Japanese culture, it’s so beautiful.
How difficult is it to sing in Japanese? Will you be singing more songs in Japanese in your upcoming performances?
Charlie: On the next tour we might play the Japanese version of “Hopeful”. Singing in Japanese was easy for me with the help of Japanese speakers. They helped us by writing it down phonetically. It was a full day of recording though, so it was tough.
What do you consider the biggest challenge in your career?
Charlie: Definitely finding healthy sleep patterns. That’s my biggest problem. It’s so hard to create a sleep pattern when you don’t have a set schedule and you’re constantly on the go with a new schedule.
Have you experienced a different level of bullying now that you have received international recognition? How do you deal with the negative attention that fame draws?
Leondre: With everything that is successful, I feel that there is no way to avoid hatred. We measure our success by happiness and how many people we touch with our music. We strive for our music to convey a message in a way that no one else can. We try to be ourselves. We’re different, but that’s who we are; We’re not trying to be a character that we’re not. And it’s nice to have [Charlie] who can relate to you and go through it with you.
How has your message evolved in your songs as your music matures?
Leondre: The world has changed a lot since I was thirteen. Everything in today’s world seems to be falling apart. It feels like we’re so out of love, so out of unity. We are concerned about these issues and our music is just a way of bringing a group of people together, no matter who they are, black or white. We strive to instill a sense of community, and if one of our supporters is going through something, we go through it with them.
Charlie: It’s changed 100 percent. We have a completely different style now. I don’t want to dwell on that too much as it might spoil the next album.
Finally, what message do you have for your Japanese audience?
Leondre: Thank you for your continued support and love even though it took us so long to get back. We really appreciate you and can’t wait to see you at our concerts!
Charlie: We’re very sorry it took so long to get here to tour for you guys, but we’re finally here and very excited to see you guys!

British R&B/rap duo
Bars and Melody (often abbreviated as BAM) are a British R&B and rap duo consisting of rapper Leondre Devries and singer Charlie Lenehan[1] who took part in the eighth season of Britain’s Got Talent in 2014. In their audition, they were automatically placed in the semi-finals of the competition after head judge Simon Cowell clicked the gold buzzer.[2] They eventually finished third in the series.[3][4][5] Her first post-show single, “Shining Star”, was released on July 30, 2014, accompanied by the acoustic version of her song “Hopeful”.[6]
On August 21, 2015, Bars and Melody released their debut studio album, 143.[7] It debuted at number four on the official UK chart.[2] Two years later her EP “Teen Spirit” was released. 2013–14: Formation and Britain’s Got Talent[edit]
Devries and Lenehan first met on social media in September 2013[1] after Devries saw Lenehan’s videos. They first met in person in January 2014 to form a musical duo as Bars and Melody.[8]
On 8 February 2014 Bars and Melody auditioned for the eighth series of Britain’s Got Talent in Manchester. They performed a song based on Twista and Faith Evans’ “Hope,” with Devries replacing the original verses with ones protesting bullying. After the performance, Simon Cowell hit the golden buzzer and sent them straight to the live semifinals.[1][9]
Prior to the semifinals, the boys appeared and performed on The Ellen DeGeneres Show in the United States.[10] In the BGT semifinals on May 29, they performed “I’ll Be Missing You” by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans, coupled with new verses about someone who had recently lost a friend; The audience received candles to wave during the performance. They won their semi-finals and advanced to the finals[11] where they performed the song they sang in their audition and eventually finished third behind Lucy Kay and Collabro.[3] According to Billboard magazine, the video of her audition was ranked number six in the top ten trending videos of 2014.[12]
2014–15:143 [ edit ]
Despite not winning, Bars and Melody signed a £500,000 record deal with Simon Cowell’s record label Syco, which released Hopeful in July 2014. Her debut single went straight to number five in the UK Singles Chart.[4] The music video for their song “Hopeful” was released on YouTube on July 7, 2014.[13][14] To promote the song they have appeared on TV shows such as Good Morning Britain, [15] This Morning [16] and The Official Chart on BBC Radio 1. [17] By the end of September, the song “Hopeful” was #33 on Twitter’s Top Tracks.[18]
Bars and Melody also took part in their first HMV signing tour to promote Hopeful. They released the song “Shining Star” which was released as part of Hopeful Acoustic.[6] Their second single “Keep Smiling” was released on February 28, 2015[19] with a music video filmed in Plymouth.[20][21] It peaked at 52 on the Official Charts Company.[19] Their third official single “Stay Strong” was released on April 18, 2015 and peaked at #53 on the Official Charts Company.[19] Two physical editions of the CD were available for purchase, each containing an image of Lenehan or Devries promoted through a second HMV signing tour. The boys released their debut album 143 on 21 August 2015,[7] which peaked at number four on the UK Albums Chart on 28 August 2015.[2] The album featured their previously recorded singles and additional songs. To promote the album they toured the UK during the summer and had a winter tour in the UK, the Netherlands and Poland[24] where the album went platinum.[25]
After appearing as guest presenters in 2014,[26] Bars and Melody appeared on the red carpet at the premiere of the CBBC show Friday Download in May 2015.[27] They also took part in the Friday Download movie called Up All Night.[28] They performed the third ending theme “Unite (Live Forever)” for the anime series Future Card Buddyfight Triple D.

In 2016, they toured five cities in February and April of that year with Kiera Weathers, a contestant on The X Factor. Cities included London, Birmingham, Bristol, Glasgow and Liverpool.[30] That year they also became ambassadors for the anti-bullying charity campaign.[2] In August 2016, her album Teen Spirit was released by Syco.[2] They toured Australia and Japan until August 2016.[25]
In August 2016, they released their first Japanese album titled Hopeful by Avex Music Creative, which includes fourteen tracks from UK albums 143 and Teen Spirit, as well as UK and Japanese versions of Hopeful.
They toured thirteen cities in Austria, Germany and Switzerland in November and December, opening with German teen singer Lukas Rieger.[32]
2017 – “Generation Z”[edit]
On February 15, 2017, they released their second Japanese album, titled Never Give Up, for distribution in Asia through Rhythm Sound, a division of Avex Music Creative.[33] In April, they announced the future release of a new album entitled Generation Z, scheduled for September 2017, as well as the immediate digital release of the new song Faded on April 14th.[34] In April they toured ten cities in Britain as the opening act for dance group Diversity.[34] On May 27, they released a Gen Z song titled “Thousand Years” which accompanied a music video on November 14, 2019 with over 28 million views on YouTube.[35] On September 1st they released Generation Z with the mentioned songs along with Not A Love Song, Fast Car and others. The album has a total of 13 songs.

In early 2018, Bars and Melody embarked on their Generation Z tour of Europe. On October 12, 2018, they released a single called Put Ü First. They also announced and had shows in Tokyo, Nagoya and Osaka, Japan in December.
2019 [edit]
In early 2019, Bars and Melody released a single from their forthcoming album titled “Love To See Me Fail”. Just a few weeks later, Bars and Melody embarked on their choke tour from late March to mid-May. On July 26th they released their long-awaited single “Waiting for the Sun” on YouTube, Apple Music, Spotify and dezzer. At the end of August they competed on Britain’s Got Talent: The Champions where they sang Waiting for the Sun in week 5 and made it to the finals the following week by audience vote singing their then newest song Lighthouse. On September 13th a German/English song called Killa was released which they had a feature on Die Lochis about. On October 4th they released their single Lighthouse which would appear on their new album due out in 2020. Also, they planned to start their mainly UK tour Lighthouse from October to early November, along with 3 shows in Japan in mid-January 2020. On December 6th, Bars and Melody released via Instagram and a week later, on December 13th, they released the Single (and her first feature ever) from the album Teenage Romance with Mike Singer. On December 7th they announced that their album Sadboi would be released in 2020. To wrap up the year, on December 20 they announced the Sadboi Tour, which would take place across Europe, with Charlie implying that it would be a “world tour” for another music band Dudes With Harmony, but sadly it got postponed and then canceled due to the pandemic next year.
2020 – Sadboi[ edit ]
On January 27, they competed on America’s Got Talent: The Champions. On January 29, Bars and Melody took to Instagram to announce the track listing for their upcoming album Sadboi. The album would consist of 12 tracks, including earlier singles “Love to See Me Fail”, “Waiting for the Sun”, “Lighthouse” and “Teenage Romance”. The release was originally scheduled for March 6, but had to be postponed due to problems with album shipping. On March 6th her new single “Ain’t Got You” was released. On March 13th they surprised everyone with their new song “Invisible”. On March 27, 2020, her album was finally released. At the end of March they had to postpone their Sadboi tour due to the COVID-19 outbreak. Some concerts have been cancelled, others postponed.

Leondre Antonio Devries was born on October 6, 2000[1] to Antonio the stonemason and Victoria Lee, a personal trainer.[36][37] A native of Port Talbot, Neath Port Talbot, Wales, he has three older brothers – Jacob Lee, Joseph Devries (Joey), the eldest is Ben Lee – and a younger sister, Matilda Devries (Tilly).[36] Joey was part of the boy band Overload Generation that took part in the eleventh season of The X Factor.[38] Leondre Devries spoke openly about his bullying experiences for four years before he switched schools.[36] At the time of the Britain’s Got Talent competition he attended Glan Afan Comprehensive School.[9] He previously rapped solo under the stage name “Little Dre.”[36] His father said that Leondre lived with him until he appeared on Britain’s Got Talent and then lived with his mother.[39] Although Leondre said during the competition that his father was a stonemason,[37] his father now says he was a music promoter.[39]

Charlie Lenehan was born on October 27, 1998 in Frampton Cotterell, Gloucestershire. He lives in London. Antonio Devries, Leondre’s father, threatened a lawsuit against the group in March 2016, saying he wrote Hopeful because of issues in his life.[39] He claims he helped mentor the lads to their Britain’s Got Talent competition, is unhappy that the lads are moving away from the anti-bullying issue and claims their management overwhelms them. He says he has no issues with Bars and Melody,[39][42] but he took over the boys’ social media accounts and released music by his son Joey and other artists he represents until the management team took control about the recovered accounts.[8] The management team, which Devries says is at the root of the problem, has explained that the guys wrote “Hopeful.” A spokesman for the boys says they are happy with their careers and management team and don’t feel used or overworked.[39][42] They also said: “Bars and Melody regret to hear that legal action has been threatened and they hope it will be resolved quickly and amicably.”[39]
