Basketball Shooting Drills Under Pressure: 1 on 1 Away Screen Drill

Basketball Shooting Practice Under Pressure: 1-on-1 Away Screen Practice by Joe Haefner

If you want to improve your shooting during the game, you need to use target practice where someone is guarding you and you are under pressure. This happens with almost every catch during the game!

Every action you take during a game is based on a defender’s positioning, so it only makes sense to practice that way as well.

You should repeat cuts and situations that actually happen during the game.

And this exercise does just that by simulating remote screens.

Instructions: A coach, passer or manager is a passer on the wing. A player with the ball on top of the button. This player is the screener and becomes the defender. A player on the wing gets the screen and becomes the offensive player. The player initiates the action by passing the wing. They immediately sprint to set the screen for the player on the opposite wing. After the screen is set, the offensive player sprints up to catch the pass. After the screen, the screener sprints to the defensive player. They try to prevent the offensive player from scoring.

Tips for screeners to get more scoring opportunities:

If you want to open up and get easy scoring chances, set up great screens for good shooters. Defenders often flock to the ball and you are left alone to take easy shots.

Two steps down to the basket. This creates better timing as the offensive player has more time to build up the screen. It creates a better angle and position for the screen. Setting the screen at a bad angle will force the offensive player into bad positions on the ground and it will be easier to protect the defender. If the screen is positioned correctly, there are opportunities for the cutter to risk scoring. They can be straight cut, wavy cut, back door cut or flared cut.

Communicating It’s important to communicate the screen verbally or with a signal so the offensive player is alert and has the defender set up before the screen gets there.

Sprint to Screen This gives both defenders less time to position themselves. Also, if the screener creates a separation from the screener’s defender, the defender will have many difficulties executing a trap or hedge to stop the ball and win the screener back.

Quick Stop This is a great way to visually show the referee that you are not moving. By making a quick stop and landing both feet at once, you’ll get fewer offensive fouls called for moving screens.

Butt & Back Facing the Passer – Again, this positioning allows the offensive player to face a larger threat with more opportunities to clip the screen.

Tips to be an effective cutter to get more points:

Bring the defender to the screen level – By bringing the defender to the screen level, you have a better position to run the defender straight to the screen. If you can get the defender to think you’re cutting to the basket and turn their head, they won’t see the screen coming.

Step your shoulder down toward the screener’s hip – This will help you maintain leverage so the defender can’t knock you out of your way and crush you between the screen.

Show Hands / Run to Target – You want to show your hands and give the passer-by a target. Better passes lead to better shots. You should also run through the pass to ensure the defender can’t slip in and score a steal. Having the defender trail behind also helps maintain separation and create a better scoring opportunity.

Call for Ball – You want to call for the ball. That way, a player with poor vision or who doesn’t see you can locate you and pass the ball to you.

Ball in the Air / Feet in the Air – To avoid hesitation after catching, point your feet and body towards the basket when catching the ball. You are ready to shoot.

Think Shot – As Jim mentioned, you want to think about a shot right away. If you’re open, shoot it. If the shot is taken away, you attack immediately.

Drilling Tips:

Encourage aggressiveness – You should not hesitate with this exercise. Mistakes are made. Encourage them to keep attacking. Through repetition, they naturally learn what works and what doesn’t. Often you don’t have to say anything.

Multiple Player Lines – If you have 5 or 6 players at a basket, you can create three lines between passer, sighter/defender and shooter. You can then rotate between the three lines.

Drill Variations:

Pick a Cut – You can also practice a particular cut over and over again, so you’ll have to get used to attacking the defensive player in that situation. You can say “flare cuts only”, “curl cuts only”, or “straight cuts only”. This is also a great way to get yourself out of your comfort zone. As humans, we tend to focus on things that we are comfortable with. This helps us to practice all situations.

Limit Dribbling – You can also limit to three or four dribbles to force your players to use dribbles efficiently.

Make it competitive – you can score points and play short games up to 3 or 4. They can also force the defense to stall to go on offense. Or if you have multiple players, if they score, the offense will remain.

15 and 3 Pressure Shooting Basketball Drill

There are many basketball players out there who can take shot after shot in practice but have trouble shooting and making big shots in a game because of the added pressure. The pressure causes the shooter to question themselves as they are not used to shooting with that kind of pressure on their shoulders. This is something that many players struggle with, and it’s also important to make sure you’re doing basketball shot drills that help simulate this type of pressure.

This catch-and-shoot basketball shooting practice forces the player to shoot with pressure on every miss and the goal of this is to teach the player to be able to make big shots when there is pressure in a game situation. This is a great basketball drill to add to your workout, basketball practice, or shooting with a partner.
