7 tips and tricks to find great running shoes at great prices

Oh run.

You either love it or you hate it – or you love it and hate it. (Or you refuse to run and love to hate it if that’s what you’re here for.)

But whether you’re the avid, endorphin-fueled marathon runner, the “Oh, well, I’ll walk the family 5k on Thanksgiving” curmudgeon, or the “Put yourself half a mile behind your route in someone’s yard” type—there’s a reason we do it.

Thing is, running is one of the cheapest sports you can do – no expensive gym membership required!

OK, so the actual running is free. But the gear that goes with it can get very expensive real quick—especially if you’re serious about running (and your overall health and safety, but we’ll get to that in a moment).

For beginning and casual runners, it’s easy to skip the $500 GPS watch and $89 high-tech tech leggings in favor of the free run-tracking phone app and $8 sale-shelf running shorts.

But one thing that all runners – of all ages and levels – need to invest in is a good pair of running shoes.

So, in honor of Global Running Day, I spoke to one of our editors (and six-time marathoner and triathlete), Caitlin Constantine (that’s her in the photos here) to learn how to review running shoes at a reasonable price.

But first…

Before she shared her great expert tips with me, Constantine asked me to pass a word of warning to anyone who buys running shoes:

“If this is your first time looking for running shoes, I recommend going to a specialty running store and working with the staff to find shoes that meet your needs, and then buying your shoes from that store,” Constantine said. “When you find shoes that work for you, consider the full cost of the shoes as payment for services rendered.

“Once you’ve been able to use their expertise to identify the type of shoe that’s right for you — whether it’s a stability shoe or a neutral shoe or one with more or less cushioning — you’ll be better equipped to start running shoes find the ones that work for you without paying full price.”

A painful lesson learned.)

7 tips to find good and cheap running shoes

I’d say offhand, but we’ve had a lot of noise here – so let’s dive right in.

1. Know when to shop

The best months of the year to find deals on running shoes (and actually most sports equipment) are January and April.

In January, stores take advantage of the fact that everyone has really good resolutions for the year and offer some pretty good sales to lure people in.

In April, after being locked up all winter, people are getting restless and ready to go outside; They want to do it in fresh clothes and bright colors, which has them flocking to the stores again — making stores compete for their attention with deep discounts.

2. Shop at the right stores

Two places I always look first when shopping for running shoes: department stores and outlet malls.

Department stores like to move their products quickly, so they often discount slow sellers (e.g. running shoes) during the monthly and semi-annual specials they always advertise.

Outlet malls are sometimes thought to be a little less than upfront in terms of prices and quality when it comes to high-end luxury brands. But for most shoe stores and athletic brands, the savings are real because they’re just trying to get rid of last year’s models.

Sport and adventure gear stores also regularly have running shoe specials, so be sure to stop by to check them out. (Just make sure to put on your blinders as you walk past the workout clothes – you’re here for shoes, remember?)

3. Do your search online

This method only works if you’ve gone through the fitting process that Constantine explained to us earlier – you need to know which brand and style are right for you and what features to look out for. (Pop quiz! Do you know if you need a neutral shoe or a stability shoe? No? Get fitted.)

Sports and outdoor gear websites like Active GearUp and The Clymb offer hefty discounts on running shoes. Just sign up for their email newsletters to be the first to hear about big sales and new products. This way you also get some great coupons!

4. Sign up for email lists

Speaking of signing up for emails, also sign up for the email lists for shoe brands you like. You will be notified of all sales and new model arrivals (i.e. older products will be discounted soon).

5. Look for models from last year

Wherever your search takes you, keep an eye out for last year’s models. You can usually find these in the sale and clearance areas, either in-store or online. This is how Constantine found good running shoes for as little as $60-$70.

And sure, last year’s models won’t have the latest, greatest technology – but I promise current shoe technology won’t make or break a beginner’s game.

6. Check out the exhibitions

If your city ever hosts a major race (like a marathon or a top-flight triathlon), visit the fair. Running shops often set up at these events and it can be a great opportunity to snag some running shoes at special show prices.

7. Find your local running shop

You should have already found your local running shop (for that fitting, remember?), but don’t forget to go back to shop what’s on offer (and support a local business)!

Most local stores even have an email list that you can sign up for as well, so you’ll be the first to hear about coupons and special offers.

On your marks, get set, go

Now that you have outfitted and invested in a first pair of running shoes with the right support for your own feet attached to your legs and connecting to your body, you can shop the deals and find the best deals.
