The actual technology behind a VELCRO® Brand hook and loop fastener is a hook and loop fastener and (you guessed it!) one side is called a hook and the other side is called a loop.

Wondering which side is which?

The rough side is called the hook.

And the soft side is called a loop.

The Velcro’s name was inspired by how the technology works. Each fastener consists of two pieces of material – one with many small loops and the other with many small hooks. And when the two sides are squeezed together, the hooks stick to the loops. The more hooks and loops attached, the stronger the bond.

How was Velcro Invented?

It’s hard to imagine life without VELCRO® Brand hook and loop fasteners (just look around and we bet there’ll be a hook and loop fastener somewhere in the room!)

But hook-and-loop technology wasn’t invented until 1941, when Swiss engineer George de Mestral was walking through the Alps with his dog, Milka, and noticed burdock — a tiny seed covered in hundreds of microscopic “hooks” that attach to the natural “snares” covering fur, clothing and hair – kept sticking to his dog’s coat.

He spent the next decade studying how the barbed, hook-like seeds of burdock engaged the “loops” on his pants, and filed his first patent for Velcro in 1955. He then marketed his invention under the VELCRO® Name brand.

Hook and loop fasteners, hook and loop fasteners, or hook and loop fasteners (often referred to by the generic trademark Velcro due to the popularity of the Velcro brand) consist of two components: typically two linear strips of fabric (or alternatively, circular “dots” or squares) attached to the opposing surfaces to be fastened (sewn or otherwise glued). The first component features tiny hooks; the second has smaller loops. When the two are pushed together, the hooks will snap into the loops and the two pieces will temporarily fasten or bind. When the two surfaces are separated by pulling or peeling the two surfaces apart, the strips produce a characteristic tearing sound.

The original Velcro was designed by Swiss engineer George de Mestral in 1941.[1][2][3] The idea came to him the day after returning from a hunting trip with his dog in the Alps. He looked closely at the burdocks that kept clinging to his clothes and his dog’s fur. He examined them under a microscope and noticed their hundreds of “hooks” that would snag on anything with a loop, such as clothing, animal fur, or hair.[4] He saw an opportunity to easily reversibly join two materials if he could figure out how to duplicate the hooks and loops.[1][3] Velcro is considered by some like Steven Vogel[5] or Werner Nachtigall[6] as a key example of inspiration from nature or copying mechanisms of nature (called bionics or biomimesis).

The big breakthrough that De Mestral made was to think about hook and eye closures on a greatly reduced scale. Hook and loop fasteners have been common for centuries, but what was new about hook and loop fasteners was the miniaturization of the hooks and eyes. Shrinking the hooks led to the other two important differences. First, Velcro fasteners have a two-dimensional surface instead of a single row of hooks.[7] This was necessary because decreasing the size of hooks also inevitably decreased strength, requiring more hooks for the same strength. The other difference is that hook and loop has an indeterminate hook-to-loop correspondence. With larger hook-and-loop fasteners, each hook has its own loop. On a scale as small as that of Velcro, it is impractical to connect each of these hooks to the corresponding eyelet, resulting in an indeterminate match.[7]

De Mestral’s proposal was initially rejected by industry leaders when he took his idea to Lyon, which was a weaving center at the time. He managed to enlist the support of a weaver who made two strips of cotton to De Mestral’s designs. However, the cotton frayed and wore out in a relatively short time. As a result, De Mestral began investigating the use of synthetic fibers, believing they would provide a more resilient product.[4] De Mestral eventually settled on nylon on the grounds that it does not fray or attract mold easily, is not biodegradable, and could be made into threads of different gauges.[8] Nylon had only recently been invented, and through trial and error, de Mestral eventually discovered that nylon, when sewn under hot infrared light, forms small hook shapes.[1] However, he had yet to find a way to mechanize the process and make the looped side. Next he found that nylon thread, when woven in loops and heat treated, retains its shape and is elastic; However, the loops had to be cut in just the right place so that they could be attached and detached many times. Just before giving up, a new idea came to him. He bought scissors and cut off the ends of the loops, creating hooks that perfectly matched the loops in the stack.[4]

It took eight years to mechanize the process of weaving the hooks, and it took another year to make the loom that trims the loops after weaving. In total, it took ten years to create a working mechanized process.[4]

De Mestral filed his idea for a patent in Switzerland in 1951, which was granted in 1955.[1] Within a few years he received patents and opened shops in Germany, Switzerland, Great Britain, Sweden, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium and Canada. In 1957 he branched out into the textile center of Manchester, New Hampshire in the United States.

Columnist Sylvia Porter first mentioned the product in her Your Money’s Worth column of August 25, 1958, writing: “It is with understandable excitement that I bring you today an exclusive account of this news: A ‘zipper without a zip’ has been invented – at last. In many ways, the new closure device is potentially more revolutionary than the zipper was a quarter century ago.”[9]

A Montreal company, Velek, Ltd., acquired exclusive rights to market the product in the Americas and Japan with American Velcro, Inc. of New Hampshire and Velcro Sales of New York and marketed the product without a zipper ” in the United States.[9]

De Mestral received patents in many countries immediately after the invention of the connecting elements, as he expected an immediate large demand. Partly because of its cosmetic appeal, however, hook and loop fastener’s integration into the textile industry took time. [citation needed] Back then, the fasteners looked like they were made from leftover scraps of cheap fabric and thus weren’t sewn into clothing or widely used when it debuted in the early 1960s.[10] It was also considered impractical.[10]

A number of Velcro Corporation products were shown at a fashion show at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York in 1959,[11] and the fabric had its first breakthrough when it was used in the aerospace industry to wrap astronauts in and to help disembark bulky space suits. However, this reinforced the popular belief that Velcro was something of very limited use. The Velcro saw’s next major application was with skiers, who saw the similarities between their outerwear and that of astronauts, and thus the benefits of an easier to don and doff suit. Diving and marine gear soon followed. After seeing astronauts storing food bags on walls,[12] children’s clothing manufacturers came on board.[10] Since hook and loop fasteners only became widely used after NASA’s introduction, NASA is popularly – and incorrectly – credited with their invention.

In the mid-1960s, Velcro was used in the futuristic creations of fashion designers such as Pierre Cardin, André Courrèges, and Paco Rabanne.[13]

Later improvements included strengthening the filament by adding polyester.[8]

In 1978, de Mestral’s patent expired, leading to a flood of cheap imitations from Taiwan, China and South Korea. Today the brand is the subject of more than 300 trademark registrations in over 159 countries. [Citation] George de Mestral was inducted into the US National Inventors Hall of Fame for his invention.[4]

Various constructions and strengths are available. Teflon loop fasteners, polyester hooks and glass carriers are used in aerospace applications such as: on space shuttles. The strength of the bond depends on how well the hooks are embedded in the loops, how much surface area is in contact with the hooks, and the type of force pulling them apart. When Velcro is used to connect two rigid surfaces, such as B. car body panels and frames, the connection is particularly strong because any force pulling the parts apart is distributed equally to all hooks. Also, any force squeezing the parts together is disproportionately applied to engaging more hooks and loops. Vibration can cause rigid parts to improve their connection. Full body Velcro suits capable of holding a person to a suitably covered wall have been manufactured.

If one or both parts are flexible, e.g. a pocket flap, the parts can be pulled apart with a peeling action that applies the force to relatively few hooks at a time. If you pull on a flexible part parallel to the surface plane, the force is distributed evenly, as with rigid parts.

Three ways to maximize the strength of a connection between the two flexible parts are:

Enlarge the adhesive surface, e.g. use larger pieces.

Ensure that the force is applied parallel to the plane of the fastener surface, e.g. B. when bending around a corner or a roll.

Increase the number of hooks and loops per unit area.

Shoe fasteners can withstand a great deal of force with just a few Velcro fasteners. This is because the webbing is wrapped through a slot, halving the force on the binding by acting as a pulley system (giving mechanical advantage) and further absorbing some of the frictional force around the tight bend. This arrangement also ensures that the force is parallel to the strips.

Pros and cons[edit]

Velcro fasteners are secure and maintenance-free. Even after many attachments and detachments, there is only a minimal loss of effectiveness. The snapping sound it makes can also be useful against pickpockets. This loud noise can also prove to be a nuisance, particularly in military clothing such as the US Army’s Army Combat Uniform, where it can draw unwanted attention in a battlefield environment.

There are also some flaws: it tends to accumulate hair, dust and fur in its hooks after a few months of regular use. The loops may lengthen or break after prolonged use. The hooks are often attached to garments, particularly loosely woven items such as sweaters. This clothing can be damaged if an attempt is made to remove the Velcro, even if the sides are slowly separated. It also absorbs moisture and sweat when worn next to the skin, meaning it won’t smell unless washed.

Applications[edit]

Because of their ease of use, hook and loop fasteners have been used for a wide variety of applications where a temporary connection is required. It is particularly popular in clothing, replacing buttons or zippers, and as a shoe fastener for children who have not yet learned to tie shoelaces. Velcro fasteners are used in adaptive clothing designed for people with physical disabilities, the elderly and the infirm who may have difficulty dressing themselves due to an inability to manipulate fasteners such as buttons and zippers.

The Velcro (USA Patent No.: US8,469,996 B2) is used in humans as a temporary fascial expander prosthesis for the treatment of abdominal compartment syndrome and when multiple abdominal procedures are required to control and eliminate intra-abdominal pathologies. Velcro fasteners held a human heart together in the first artificial heart operation. It is used in nuclear power plants and army tanks to attach flashlights to walls. In cars, Velcro is used to attach headliners, floor mats and speaker covers. It is used in the home for folding curtains, fixing carpets, and attaching upholstery.[4] Closures on backpacks, briefcases and notebooks are often closed with Velcro. Cloth diapers often use hook and loop fasteners. It is an essential part of games like tag rugby and flag football and is used in surfboard leashes and orthopedic braces.

NASA makes extensive use of Velcro. Each space shuttle flew equipped with 10,000 inches of a custom fastener made of Teflon loops, polyester hooks, and glass pads.[8] Velcro is widely used in everything from astronaut suits to anchoring gear. In the near-zero gravity conditions of orbit, Velcro is used to temporarily hold objects and prevent them from floating away.[14] A patch is used in astronauts’ helmets, where it serves as a nose scratch. During mealtimes, astronauts use trays that attach to their thighs with springs and fasteners.[12] Velcro is also used onboard the International Space Station.

The sliding mesh closure was developed to solve several problems with common hook and loop fasteners.[15][16] Heavy-duty variants (such as “Dual Lock” or “Duotec”) have mushroom-shaped stems on each side of the clasp that provide an audible click when the two sides mate. A strong pressure-sensitive adhesive bonds each component to its substrate.

There is a silent version of Velcro, sometimes referred to as Quiet Closures.

Velcro Jumping is a game in which people wearing suits covered with hooks make a running jump and throw themselves as high as possible against a loop-covered wall. The wall is inflated and looks similar to other inflatable structures. It’s not necessarily fully covered with the material – often there are vertical hook stripes. Sometimes people use a small trampoline instead of a running jump.

The television show’s host, David Letterman, immortalized this on the February 28, 1984 episode of Late Night with David Letterman on NBC. Letterman proved that given enough footage, a man could be slammed against a wall and a stick by performing the feat during the television show.[4][10][17]

The jumping went beyond David Letterman, with amusement companies renting walls and overalls for $400 to $500 a day.[17] It was also regularly performed in pubs in New York and New Zealand, where it was a competition to see how high a person could get their feet off the floor.[18] Jeremy Bayliss and Graeme Smith of the Cri Bar and Grill in Napier, New Zealand, started after seeing American astronauts stick to walls during spaceflights. They made their own equipment for the Human Fly competitions and sold it to several others in New Zealand.[18]

The game moved to the United States after Sports Illustrated ran a story about it in 1991. Adam Powers and Stephen Wastell of Perfect Tommy’s Bar in New York City read about the game and soon became the United States distributor of Human Bar Fly devices. By 1992, wall jumping was being practiced in dozens of New Zealand bars and was considered one of the most popular bar activities there at the time.[18]

I’ll show you my flawless, simple method on how to use curtain clips and get perfect results every time. You can’t mess this up!

The right curtain can be an important part of interior design – it can frame the whole room! If you are wondering how to attach your curtain rings so you have perfect folds and nice looking curtains then this post is for you. I thought it would be helpful to show you guys how I attach my curtain clip rings as that’s basically all I use around my house!

I love the look of using curtain rings compared to other hanging methods and I find it much easier to open and close other curtains this way. We open and close ours daily for privacy reasons.

Before we begin, here are a few basic points about curtain clips: Clip rings are generally sold in sets of 7 or 10.

You want to make sure your clip ring is larger than the diameter of your curtain rod.

The more clip rings on a curtain panel, the more folds in your curtains.

Using clamp rings will add 1″ to 2″ to the curtain length as the curtain hangs slightly under the curtain rod.

What types of curtains can you use clips with?

Any type of curtains or curtains will work with curtain clip rings; including back tab (hidden tabs), rocket pocket drapes and more. That’s the beauty of using curtain clips as you simply attach the ring to the top edge of the fabric panel.

You can even use them to hang cafe style curtains from a tension rod – it all works!

How many curtain rings per panel?

That’s the important question, but first you need to ask yourself how many folds you want in your curtains. When using drapes with crushed pleats, the number of pleats determines how many ferrules you use. If you want 6 folds, use 7 rings

If you want 7 folds, use 8 rings

If you want 8 folds, use 9 rings

If you want 9 folds, use 10 rings

The width of your curtain will also help determine this. Most curtain panels are sold in widths of 45-52 inches. If you have extra wide curtains (100 inches), you will need more clips. If you have narrow, decorative curtains (25 inches), you need a lot less.

The curtains I use are 52 inches wide and I use 9 clip rings per panel.

How to Use Curtain Clips – My Method

Well – here is what I find the easiest way to get the most perfect folds in your curtains! No calculating, no measuring – the perfect solution for attaching curtain clips.

Start with a total of 9 rings. Unfold your curtain fully and place a clamp ring on the top edge of the panel at each end. Fold your curtain in half so the two clip rings meet. Put a clip ring on the other end. Fold your curtain in half again and at the other end place two clamp rings on each fold. Fold your curtain in half again and at the other end place four clip rings at each fold. Open your curtain again and you should have 9 perfectly placed clip rings.

You may need to make some minor adjustments to get the folds just right, but for the most part – all your rings are where they should be.

Gather all the clip rings, adjust the pleats and place on your curtain rod. I like to place a clip ring or two on the other side of the curtain mount and the remaining rings on the inside of the mount. This makes the curtain appear fuller and extends beyond the window.

How to hide the clip rings

If you want less space between the curtain and the rod, you can use this method to “hide” your clip rings.

You can use the same method I used above to space your curtain clips, but instead of attaching them to the top edge of your curtain, attach them about an inch from the top but still inside the headboard of the curtain. This will force your curtains to hang higher and closer to the rod and you won’t be able to see the “clips” on your curtains.

You can also use curtain pins. These curtain metal pins have a sharp point that you can push through the back of the curtains in the header, then you can hook the pin on the curtain ring.

How to train your curtains

You can “train” your curtains to stay pleated or “remember the creases”. First – steam them once they’re hung to remove wrinkles. I use this steamer and I love it so much! You can also try tying loose jute twine around it once the pleats are in place. You need to leave them like this for a few days to set.

If you have a good curtain fabric like velvet or linen curtains, I find it easier to train your curtains.

My favorite curtain clip rings

You can buy curtains almost anywhere these days, but I get mine in bulk from Amazon. I always go for a matte black curtain rod and this large set of matte curtain clips.

You can go fancier if you like; like Pottery Barn or Ballard Designs. I’m good at using the bulk set and I think they look great too.

You may have seen this trick before, but let me tell you it’s rocking my world right now.

I’m a big fan of curtain ring clips because they make hanging curtains so easy and having the little clips showing has never bothered me as much as I know for many.

I used them for the fabric curtains I stenciled for our dining room…..

..they hang on my DIY curtain rods in our master….

….and I’ve used them countless times in all my homes over the years. Clips are great for adjusting the length of a curtain as you can fold the top over and get the perfect length, and rings are great for curtains that close frequently as they slide easily on the rod.

With this little trick you can still use the lightness and function of the ring clip without seeing it – a small detail that I think gives a really nice finishing touch to a curtain.

These curtains below hung in my 15-year-old Hannah’s room – plain white panels from Target that didn’t hang on clip rings since the panels have back tabs that the rod slides into. Two issues with them: they didn’t slide easily on the pole, and the unlined panels didn’t block the sun very well, preventing my poor little sleep-loving girl from oversleeping the summer

(as well as the misfortune of having a mother who likes to pull the curtains on everyone

This time I bought Merete curtains from Ikea lined with the Target curtains and hung them with clip rings. The Merete curtains were meant to darken the room, but for my sleep lover, they still weren’t light-blocking enough on their own.

The “lined” curtains on rings work much better for curtains that open and close daily.

HERE’S QUICK TIP ON HOW TO HIDE CURTAIN RING CLIPS:

Simply pinch the back of the curtains and clip the rings about an inch from top to bottom.

You can do this before hanging the curtain and then slide the rings onto the rod.

or hang the rings on the rod and then clip up the curtains.

When the curtains are closed, the pinched spots are not very noticeable.

The curtains hang so beautifully and I just like the hint of the ring at the top.

It’s the “simple details” that make the difference, as my friend Pam would say 🙂
