TOP TIP #2 If you want to add a pattern to your floor tiles, use a stencil to create the pattern you want. It’s more time consuming than just painting a floor, but the result will be worth it. Test out a pattern on a tile-sized piece of cardboard – to test your painting skills – and see how the pattern looks on your floor.

Realistically, you won’t be able to avoid painting the grout. This would be cumbersome and very time consuming.

Vinyl sheet is thicker than floor sheet (1 to 3mm on average) and is excellent for smoothing the edges of a mosaic tile floor. However, vinyl wrap doesn’t always have the prettiest patterns, so we recommend covering it with floor tiles.

Step 1: Measure and cut your vinyl wrap

Measure the vinyl sheet to match the dimensions of your floor. Then cut it to size with a sharp utility knife.

Step 2: Apply double-sided flooring or carpet tape

Use double-sided vinyl flooring or carpet tape to line the perimeter of the surface to be covered. Then place additional strips of tape perpendicular to the direction you want to apply your vinyl wrap.

When applying the tile paint you must use 2 coats of paint with a light sanding between coats. Use a paint roller to apply the paint and use a brush for hard-to-reach areas. When applying the paint, it is better to use 2 thinner coats of paint than 1 thick coat.

Apply the paint in a zigzag formation, then use the paint roller from top to bottom while focusing on a small area at a time.

After about 6 hours your paint should be completely dry. Now lightly sand the paint with 600 grit sandpaper. Wipe off excess dust with a towel.

At this point you should apply a 2nd coat of paint. Continue with a zig zag application of paint ending with a top down motion with the paint roller to ensure a smooth finish.

After painting, it can take up to a week for your tile paint to fully cure. Avoid thorough cleaning during this time to allow the paint to fully cure.

How to seal painted floor tiles

I think it is very important to seal your painted tiles with a polyurethane coating. This is a tough, durable clear coat that will prevent your paint from chipping or wearing off (if at all). I like to use Varathane products for this step.

How to clean painted floor tiles

Sealed and varnished floor tiles are easy to clean. I use the exact same method I use to clean other floors in my house – a mop and an all-purpose cleaner! If you have any residue stuck on, I would be careful to scrape it with something sharp or metallic. Using soft plastic tools would avoid scratching the floor.

How durable are painted floor tiles? Do painted floor tiles last?

I’ve had my painted floor tile since May 2018 and it still looks amazing! I think most painted tiles should last for many years if the surface is prepared properly, good paint is used and if it is properly sealed. You should consider resealing the floor every year or two if it’s in a high-traffic area.

Of course, investing in floor paint for residential or commercial spaces is no small (or cheap) decision. So if you decide to go down this route, you want to get the most out of the first time use. In some cases, your coatings can last several decades before they need serious repair or replacement, but there are several factors that will determine whether or not your particular application will last that long. So how long will your cement floor paint last? While there’s no way to know for sure, let’s go through the conditions that contribute to this answer.

How long does cement paint last

What kind of coating do you use?

Of course, one factor that will determine the longevity of your floor paint is the type of finish you choose from the start. Epoxy concrete floor paint remains the most popular option, but it’s in good company with polyurea, urethane, acrylic, latex, and more. What can your concrete floors withstand?

There is no getting around it – the harder your floors are used, the shorter their lifespan will be. Consider the difference between a little-used residential garage and a high-traffic industrial workplace. The former may be easily walkable and have to handle the weight of a vehicle or two, while the latter face constant foot traffic, heavy machinery, a higher risk of bumps and spills, etc. Also, commercial spaces are often larger than residential spaces, so more ground needs to be covered and maintained. Therefore, the exact same color of cement may last half as long (or less) when applied in a factory than when applied in someone’s basement.

All this ensures that the coating bonds properly and prevents moisture and dirt from getting stuck between the substrate and the paint.

Proper preparation is key, as is proper application. Different types of cement coatings require different methods and have different drying/setting times. Failure to meet these requirements can result in a poor seal and short-lived application. Even the best epoxy paint can only last a few years if not applied properly. What is your maintenance plan?

The final difference in the lifespan of a floor coating has to do with maintenance.
