Still, they might want to use it later to test themselves and see the full list of possible words they could have played.

How to use Word Unscrambler

Word decoding tips

You have some jumbled up letters and now you have to decipher words from them. What is the best approach? Here are some top tips for finding out what words you can form with those scrambled letters.

Look for common patterns

The English language uses many of the same patterns and combinations in its words. Some letters often appear next to each other, so take advantage of that fact when trying to unravel those scrambled letters. Some common examples are CH (as in “cheese”), TH (as in “there”), and PH (as in “telephone”). You’ll become a better word unscrambler when you see combinations of letters rather than just single scrambled letters.

Start short, play long

If you start looking for the longest possible words, you’re probably wasting your time. Instead, build on the idea from the previous tip. Look for common letter groupings and see how you can string them together to unscramble words that keep getting longer.

Let’s say you have the letters CH and also AEEER. Building on this CH you could somehow connect EA. CHEA isn’t a word, but EACH is. And then you could add the R at the beginning to get REACH. Likewise, EE is a common combination. Combining CH and EE gives you CHEE, which isn’t a word, but adding that R at the end gives you CHEER. Add the common suffix of -ED and you have the 7 letter word CHEERED.

Boost your score even more by unscrambling short words. All those little dots add up quickly too!

Shuffle these tiles

Almost every game that involves unscrambling letters to form words has some sort of “shuffle” option. It’s not a “hint” in the traditional sense, but simply moving these letters around in a different order can help you see them in a whole new way. If you feel stuck, keep tapping the shuffle button and see if you catch a new word or combination of letters.

Decode systematically

This won’t be the most interesting tip, but it might be the most useful. You could say it’s the equivalent of brute force strategy. Just go through the possible unscrambled letters systematically to unscramble words. This is especially useful in games like Word Cookies® and Wordscapes®.

For example, let’s say you have ADLMWY as your letters. AY is a common ending. If you go through the other letters systematically, you get DAY, LAY, MAY and WAY. Similarly AD is a common ending. This creates words like MAD and LAD. Though this is madness, there is method to it!

Add prefixes and suffixes

Remember the earlier tip to start short and play long? Suffixes and prefixes can really help decode letters into words. If you see letter combinations like ED and ING, try adding them to the end of the word you’ve already found. Likewise, you may be able to add IN- or RE- to the beginning of the word.

Remember to use plural forms

This builds on the previous tip. Consider yourself lucky if you have the letter S at your disposal. Just append it to the end of almost any word you come across. This includes both nouns and verbs. It can sometimes work with adverbs and adjectives too! Always play both the singular and plural versions of words when you have an S handy.

Use our Word Unscrambler!

Of course, the best tip of all is to just keep using this handy decryptor! If you need help from a word finder, just do what you’ve been doing and give us your letters. We find the words for you. Need some 6-letter words to complete a particularly difficult level? Want some 7 letter words to capitalize on the bingo bonus? We’ll cover you.

Discover the history behind one of the world’s favorite word games! There were many victims of America’s Great Depression in 1929. But in 1933 an out of work architect named Alfred Mosher Butts invented a game that would lift the spirits of millions.

Unscramble DEVELOP

Discover the story behind one of the most popular word games in the world!

It started with a crash

There were many casualties of America’s Great Depression in 1929. But in 1933, an unemployed architect named Alfred Mosher Butts invented a game that would lift the spirits of millions.

Butts, who was from Poughkeepsie, New York, analyzed popular games and defined three distinct categories: number games like craps and bingo; movement games such as chess and checkers; and puns such as anagrams. He also remarked, “…there’s one thing that keeps word games from being as popular as card games: they don’t have a score.”

Attempting to combine the thrill of chance and skill, Butts weaved elements of anagrams and the classic crossword into a word game with dots first called LEXIKO. This was then refined in the early 1930s and 1940s to become CRISS CROSS WORDS.

The SCRABBLE game is born

Legend has it that Butts studied the front page of The New York Times to do his calculations for the distribution of letters in the game. This skillful, cryptographic analysis of our language formed the basis of the original tile distribution that has remained constant across nearly three generations and billions of games.

Nonetheless, established game manufacturers unanimously slammed the door on Butts’ invention. It wasn’t until Butts met gaming-loving entrepreneur James Brunot that the concept became a commercial reality.

Together they refined the rules and design and then, most importantly, came up with the name SCRABBLE – a word defined as “grab, collect, or hold”; and a word that really captures the essence of this remarkable concept. And so the SCRABBLE brand crossword puzzle game was trademarked in 1948.

Words don’t always come easy…

Moving on, the Brunots rented a small, red, abandoned schoolhouse in Dodgington, Connecticut. Together with some friends, they made 12 games an hour, stamping letters one after the other on wooden tiles. Only later were boards, boxes and tiles manufactured elsewhere and sent to the factory for assembly and shipment.

In fact, the first four years were a struggle. In 1949, the Brunots made 2,400 sets and lost $450. Despite this, the SCRABBLE game slowly but steadily gained popularity among a handful of consumers.

Then, in the early 1950s, the President of MACY’S reportedly spotted the game while on vacation and ordered it for his store. Within a year, the SCRABBLE game was a must-have hit, and SCRABBLE games were rationed in stores nationwide!

In 1952, the Brunots licensed Selchow & Righter Company, a well-known game manufacturer, to market and distribute the games in the United States and Canada. Selchow & Righter ramped up production to meet overwhelming demand for the SCRABBLE game. In 1972, Selchow & Righter purchased the Brunot brand, giving the company exclusive rights to all SCRABBLE-branded products and entertainment services in the United States and Canada. One of the first clever moves of the game…

In 1986, Selchow & Righter was sold to COLECO Industries, which had become famous as the makers of the Cabbage Patch Dolls. But three years later, COLECO declared bankruptcy and its key assets – most notably the SCRABBLE game and PARCHEESI™ – were bought by Hasbro, Inc., owners of the Milton Bradley Company, America’s leading games company.

Today, the SCRABBLE game can be found in three out of five American homes, ranging from a junior edition to an electronic scoring edition with many versions in between including: standard, deluxe, and travel size.

Continue to play!

Like chess and bridge, the competitive game of SCRABBLE is hugely popular, with new players joining every year.

Each year, the North American SCRABBLE Players Association (NASPA) hosts a national SCRABBLE championship in a major US city. The tournament attracts more than 500 highly skilled and competitive adult SCRABBLE players who compete in 31 individual rounds over a five-day period.

NASPA has thousands of players with official tournament ratings who compete weekly in sanctioned clubs across the United States and Canada. You can get involved and learn more about NASPA by visiting scrabbleplayers.org.

The challenge continues…

Whatever the stakes, whether at home or intellectual horns in a tournament, competing players can check and challenge their SCRABBLE words using Merriam-Webster’s “Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary”.

The fifth edition of the dictionary was published in 2014 and has added more than 5,000 words since the last update. One notable word that was added was “GEOCACHE,” a word chosen by fans at the SCRABBLE Word Showdown that took place on Facebook in 2014.

For school-aged SCRABBLE enthusiasts, the National School SCRABBLE TOURNAMENT brings together participants from across the US and Canada to discover the youngest rising SCRABBLE stars. Students participating in the tournament are typically members of a SCRABBLE school club, where they learn the rules of the game, practice their vocabulary, and learn the benefits of teamwork.

Parents, teachers and coaches can visit www.schoolscrabble.us to learn more about the event and register students for the annual spring tournament.

The SCRABBLE game has also reached a new community of gamers in the digital age with digital versions of the game from Hasbro licensee Electronic Arts. These digital versions, available on Facebook, iPhone, iPad and Android devices, are a continuing testament to Alfred Mosher Butts and his wonderful pun.
