When measuring megohms, measure across two isolated windings. Let’s say you can find windings A-B, C-D and E-F this way. To find the polarity, you need to connect the primary winding to the mains. Measure the AC voltages of A-B, C-D and E-F. Let’s say these are 19V, 19V, and 12V. These are no-load voltages that can be well above the rated voltage, especially with toroidal transformers. In my example, the nominal voltages could be 2 x 12V and 8V.

Because buttons, buzzers, and transformers are relatively inexpensive, replacing these failed components usually makes more sense than attempting a costly repair.

Don’t be intimidated by the steps with a multimeter (or voltmeter or ohmmeter); These power tools are important and inexpensive.

BG Doorbell Transformer

Hi.

I’ve bought 2 x BG doorbell transformers that I can’t get a DC output on either terminal.

I took them back for a different and same problem.

I can’t believe I have 3 faulty transformers but I can’t see myself doing something stupid.

I can check with the multimeter and get a 240V input, but when I check the 0V terminal and the 12 volt terminal I get no reading. When I probe 0V and 24V I get nothing.

When I check with a laptop power supply, the meter reads 19V.

Can anyone help me what I’m doing wrong or do I have 3 from a faulty batch?!
