I’m looking for advice on a problem. This was my first time applying a colored grout, my only other experience was doing the bathroom shower tiles. (Which came out great.)
Last night I tiled black granite with Polyblend #60 Charcoal Nonsanded Grout. When I woke up this morning most of the grout was light gray but there are a few spots where the grout is black (but not many). I mixed the grout with a grout mixer on the end of my drill so I know it was mixed well. After applying it with the smoothness I noticed it wasn’t as smooth in many places so I used a damp sponge and water on my finger to smooth out the grout after filling. (Was that a no-go? What did I do wrong and how can I fix it?

Why Did My Grout Turn Gray?
Age of Grout
The age of the grout within the grout joint is one of the leading factors in grout color beginning to turn gray. Like any other material, grout and the colors associated with it are subject to time and wear and tear. While it can take years for grout to lose its color if proper installation methods are followed, it will still fade over time, leaving you with gray grout as the grout returns to its original concrete base.
Improper mixing
Improper mixing when grouting the tiles can cause the grout to turn gray within the first few days or weeks of completing a job. Dry mixed mortar contains a variety of pigments as well as polymers in the mix and proper mixing procedures must be followed in order for these ingredients to be fully mixed. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions closely when mixing your grout, otherwise you run the risk of the pigments not mixing completely and your grout discoloring and turning gray.
Bad batch of mortar
Although rare, occasionally a manufacturer may sell a bad batch of grout. If the grout is left on the shelf for a long time, the pigments it contains can settle or, in the worst case, be affected by external moisture which can cause them to clump together in the bag. When poor quality grout is mixed and used (with the offending chunks removed) it can result in the grout lacking some of the key pigments that give the grout color. If you open a bag of dry grout and find clumps in it, you should replace it with a fresh bag of non-clumped grout.
Excess water when grouting
The washing phase of the grouting process is just as important as mixing the grout itself. If too much water is used during the wiping and cleaning phase of grouting, the extra water will dilute the concrete to color pigment ratio. Once the grout starts to dry, it will have more concrete than color, meaning gray is the most noticeable color. Always wash the grout according to the manufacturer’s instructions, using as little water as possible to ensure the correct color.

OK, I need constructive guidance. I made a herringbone pattern polished slate floor and wanted black grout to accentuate the colors in the floor. Well, I have issues with efflorescence/gray slime. I know I really screwed up by using too much water to clean the tiles, I don’t know how I could have avoided it. The tiles are 3″X12″ and the cleaning effort was inevitable. I’ve done black grout before and haven’t had this problem. I used Mapei unsanded grout.
I’m not a fan of how the Mapei grout refresher looks or feels, so I’m not a huge fan of this solution. And using an acid to clean the grout without working with the natural stone. So what can I do to fix this without completely removing all of my grout, which I don’t want to do (because I would have to polish and reseal the tile before grouting again)? Do I have any other options?
