Dual flush toilets don’t actually use a siphon tube, but instead use a larger trap to get rid of the waste. Rather than relying on suction, it relies on gravity to naturally push the water and waste down. This ultimately means less water is used with each flush, including the half and full flush buttons.

How much money does it save?

Here, too, double-flush toilets save around 67 percent of the water consumption compared to normal toilets. Older toilet models typically use 3.5 gallons per flush (gpf). Some models even use up to 7 gpf. Currently, the industry standard is 1.6 gpf, which is still a significant drop.

Depending on where you live, the cost for 1,000 gallons can range from $2 to $3. Since the average person flushes 20.1 gallons of water a day, for a toilet, that can add up pretty quickly. Especially if your toilet uses more than the current industry standard.

Dual flush toilets use even less than average, about 1.28 gpf when you combine the full flush and half flush average. Typically, the solid waste button performs a regular flush (1.6 gallons) and the liquid waste uses only half the amount of water (0.8 gallons).

Now, that’s not a huge money gap, but between the money you save and the amount of water you save, it can make a big difference to your landscape and your wallet.

Reattach the fill tube and push firmly onto the fill valve. Make sure it sits about 1 inch above the rim of the overflow pipe and that the fill pipe directs water into the toilet overflow pipe. Flush the toilet and watch the stream of water to make sure it flows through the toilet overflow pipe.

If there is a problem with the toilet overflow hose, remove the tank cap and locate the fill hose. It’s a small flexible hose that runs from the fill valve to the toilet overflow hose. As the tank is refilled, this tube will squirt enough water into the toilet overflow pipe to refill the bowl after the flush is complete. If this pipe falls off or the stream of water misses the overflow pipe, the bowl will not fill and your next flush will be weak (that is, a strong siphon will not develop).

Adjust the fill level by checking the float

The water level in the tank is controlled by an adjustable float. A float set too low will produce a weak flush; If it is set too high, water will run into the toilet overflow pipe and the fill valve will not close. The toilet continues. To learn how to fix a toilet that won’t flush, look for the level mark on the inside of the tank and mark it on the toilet overflow pipe so you can see it better. If you can’t find it, measure about 1 inch from the overflow pipe and make a mark.

Then flush the toilet and see if the water reaches that mark and stops there. If it doesn’t and the toilet keeps running, adjust the toilet tank float up or down. If you have an old toilet, you will need to bend the brass rod that connects to the float ball to make adjustments. But with newer toilets, you typically turn a screw or slide a clip along a rod. Flush the toilet after each adjustment. Adjust the float until the water shuts off at the correct level.

Also, make sure the water level is at least 1 inch below the C-L (critical level) mark on the fill valve. You can adjust the height of many valves to raise or lower the C-L. Occasionally the inflation valve just won’t close, which means it’s defective. In this case, turn off the water supply at the shut-off valve under the tank. Buy a replacement valve. You don’t have to match the old one; many, like the one pictured, will fit most toilets. It’s a 15 minute switch.
