Is it possible that Roblox’ Welcome to Bloxburg will be free soon?

Welcome to Bloxburg is one of the most popular paid games on Roblox. It’s an RPG where you build and design your house, own vehicles, hang out and work around town. RP games are becoming increasingly popular and with the success of Brookhaven free play, many players are wondering if Bloxburg will be free!

When will Bloxburg be free?

There is currently no indication that Bloxburg will be free. These rumors pop up every now and then, but the developers haven’t mentioned anything official.

While Brookhaven is growing in popularity, Bloxburg is not doing badly. Bloxburg is also very cheap, it only costs 25 Robux to play, so most players can afford the cost if they want to try the game. However, you can also argue that at this point there is no real reason for Welcome to Bloxburg to continue charging this fee. Now that they have some pretty stiff competition in Brookhaven, they should probably just scrap the fee so they can compete directly with the game! Bloxburg also has additional in-game monetization options, so it doesn’t fully rely on the Robux required to play.

Based on my limited playing time of the games, Welcome to Bloxburg seems to be the more detailed of the two games. However, that doesn’t mean Brookhaven can’t catch up in the future. It looks like we’ll have to wait and see what steps the Bloxburg developers decide on.

With a reported 64 million monthly active users across all platforms, it’s unsurprising that the user-generated gaming platform Roblox is often compared to Minecraft.

The main difference, however, is that those who create content in Roblox can earn real money from their creations by implementing their own in-game economies and monetization systems.

Last year, one Roblox developer made more than $3 million, while several others raked in between $1 million and $2 million. Roblox tells PocketGamer.biz that the top developers are now making up to $250,000 per month.

So what’s it like doing business effectively as a Roblox creator, especially when much of the community is so young?

Roblox creator Coeptus (who prefers to keep his real name a secret) is a university student and the developer of Welcome to Bloxburg, a The Sims-style game made entirely with Roblox creation tools.

PocketGamer.biz contacted him to find out more.

PocketGamer.biz: How was your introduction to the Roblox platform and when did you start developing your own games on it?

Coeptus: I created my first account on Roblox about nine years ago and started playing some of the user-made games that were popular at the time. These were really fun and unique which sparked my interest in Roblox.

After just playing for about a year, I started experimenting by developing my own games. The first ones were very simple and mostly consisted of pre-made models like cars, houses and trees that you could easily add to your game.

Being able to create something of my own sparked my interest, so from that point on I focused more on making games than playing them.

Do you already have experience in game development? How big was the learning curve developing Roblox?

I had no real development experience before I found out about Roblox, but had a pretty keen interest in computers and video games.

That was never really a problem though, as creating those fairly simple first games felt fun and relatively easy. You don’t need to know everything about the Roblox platform to create something, which makes the learning curve pretty forgiving.

I learned more and more by changing and experimenting with the pre-made models. Eventually I started creating my own scripts and mockups from scratch.

Roblox, as well as individual developers, are also actively working on creating tutorials aimed at giving developers a better insight into the development process on the Roblox platform.

This makes it even easier for aspiring developers to get started and find helpful information.

How did you get Roblox players to notice your creations?

I didn’t really do anything to promote my game when I first released it because I wanted to intentionally keep the player count low.

The game had never been properly tested on a large scale, so I wanted to make sure everything was working as expected.

Instead, I just published and maintained the game under a completely unknown name on the Roblox website.

After the first day about 20 players had joined. The next day that number grew to 50, then 100, and then 200 and so on.

A few weeks later, a few thousand were playing. Finally, players wrote about the game on social media and uploaded videos of themselves to YouTube.

As a result, the number of players increased even further and has been growing steadily ever since.

This is a really cool aspect of the Roblox platform. Even though millions of games and experiences are released on the platform, people will find your game and they will become your biggest advocates, who then get others to try it.

What was your approach to monetization and how long did it take you to start making money?

My goal is to allow people to experience most of the game without having to pay anything, while also offering some options for players who want to buy special things.

The game currently has a few different products that players can purchase.

At the moment, the game is still under development, so players need to pay a small pre-access fee of 25 Robux (Roblox’s $0.25 virtual currency) to play the game.

However, the plan is to make the game completely free to play upon completion.

Players primarily earn this currency by completing various tasks and mini-games while playing the game, but a player can also choose to purchase the virtual currencies directly using Robux.

There are a few different packages in different price ranges, with the more expensive offering a slightly better deal.

There are also permanent upgrades called game passes that can be purchased once per player. These can give players the opportunity to build larger houses, unlock cosmetic items, purchase exclusive furniture, or take advantage of other specific perks while playing.

I developed the game in my spare time during college. Because of this, it took a few years for the first playable version to be created and released.

As the number of players increased in the first month, I started making some money. It then grew with the number of players.

How many people have played your games in Roblox and roughly how much do you make from the platform?

To date, around 300,000 unique players play the game every day and it has accumulated around 160 million game sessions since its release on August 1st, 2016.

The game turned out way better than I could have ever imagined, which was really amazing. I’m very happy and grateful that so many people are playing and enjoying the game, and I’m also grateful for the opportunity it has given me to pay for an upcoming college degree.

Is Roblox a platform for developers to build a viable business on? Do you communicate with other Roblox developers to discuss your creations?

Based on my experience, I would definitely say so. Roblox has grown massively over the past few years and it seems like they are more focused on the business aspect of developing on the platform, which is great.

Hopefully this trend will continue and make it even better and more rewarding for development teams.

Most developers communicate extensively through social media and chat apps. Developers also form teams for new projects, discussing ideas and exchanging advice.

It really feels like a community, both for the players but more importantly for the developers.

How is the dialogue between you and the Roblox team?

Roblox has a dedicated forum where developers and company employees can discuss anything related to the platform, often from planned updates and feature requests to general feedback.

Recently, Roblox introduced a developer relations team dedicated to communicating with individual developers and providing support for the projects developers work on.

These additions have been very positive and I really hope Roblox continues to improve the developer dialogue.

Do you have any other Roblox games/creations in the pipeline?

I have a few ideas and prototype games, but for now I’ve decided to fully focus on improving my current game, Welcome to Bloxburg, and staying in touch with all the players who have provided productive feedback.

However, the release of another type of game in the future would definitely be interesting.
